EarthPorn rule tweak

Hey fellow mods

Over the years it has become increasingly clear to those of us who mod EarthPorn regularly that the terms of the wiki are maybe a touch out of date.

Currently, the language we adhere to for moderating things like man made objects is "The images should be primarily focused on the natural landscape and anything human made should either not be in the photograph or be very, very small." People modmail regularly to argue about what is the focus and what the word small means.

I'd like to propose and listen to thoughts on a language tweak to make this more relateable and useful for modding.

Instead of the aforementioned language we would use something like "Submission photos should be exclusively natural landscape images without any man made objects present. If something in the image is obviously man made, it will be removed."

If anyone has any thoughts on this I would love to hear about them.

/r/CampingPorn requesting consideration in the SFW Porn Network

Hello, almighty SFW porn lords. I am the founder and moderator of /r/CampingPorn and I am here to seek help in moderation and to request the subreddit be considered in your network.

I created the subreddit over 7 years ago now with the idea of it being a place for people to post cozy campsites, campsites with views, "glamping", and other similar posts that would make people want to go out and camp. Note that this is distinct from /r/EarthPorn in that it is specifically focused on campsites, not necessarily the scenery (although scenery may be considered part of what makes a nice campsite). There may be some overlap there, but I hope you will agree /r/CampingPorn has a unique vision not currently filled in the SFW Porn Network.

Recently, it came to my attention the subreddit was still locked for submissions after a reported post went unattended for too long. I addressed the post but didn't realize that did not open up the subreddit. Unfortunately, I am not as well versed in the moderating arts as the seasoned SFW porn Lords.

So, that brings me to where we are now. /r/CampingPorn has managed to amass 2,741 subscribers now and I feel I am doing the subreddit a disservice by moderating it all on my own with my limited experience. I am happy to learn the ways of the moderators, but I am especially interested in seeing the subreddit reach its true potential through the right leadership and, potentially, through membership in the SFW Porn Network. I would be more than happy to change rules and CSS to fit in with the networked subs as well, of course. If it is the opinion of the SFW Porn Overlords that the subreddit is not yet ready, I would be more than happy to take on any volunteers and let the subreddit continue on and grow and I can reapply at some date in the future.

  • Here are the subreddit's pageview stats for your consideration. The drop in recent months is most likely due to my failure to reopen the subreddit.
  • Here are the subscriber stats as well

If you would like to see anything else I would be more than happy to share more data as well.

Reddit just announced Image galleries

A post of actual importance, that doesnt try to shame other mods for no reason:

Reddit just announced Image Galleries, which by default are turned on: https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/hisodw/image_gallery_support_is_coming_soon/

Most of the network should have rules regarding single static image submissions only, so this feature should be turned off. You can do this here: https://new.reddit.com/r/SUBREDDIT/about/edit?page=posts and look for the Allow multiple images per post toggle.

Please go through your subs and turn it off where appropriate, thanks! <3

I would like to add r/TheatrePorn to the SFWPorn Network

I have created a new subreddit, /r/TheatrePorn, and I would like a vote to include the subreddit in the official SFWPorn Network. I would also like to include mods to the subreddit, as I am the only one thus far.

[Official Vote Thread] Ban all photos taken illegally from /r/EarthPorn

Vote: Ban all photos taken illegally from /r/EarthPorn, including illegal drone photos.

Still Friday in Europe for another couple minutes, so not too late ;)

Brainstorm thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/PornOverlords/comments/9wgs1f/official_brainstorm_thread_ban_illegal_drone/

By illegal we mean quite literally breaking the law, e.g. flying your drone in a no fly zone, crossing borders that were put up to protect nature and wildlife, violating access restrictions.

The rule and announcement thread will specifically point out drone photos to pull our users attention to this and hopefully get their help in identifying posts that break this rule.

How we would go about enforcing this rule: checking every post for legality, especially with the extension, would generate too big of a workload for us to reasonably do. Our suggestion would be to approve posts according to the current rules and remove illegal photos when users report them, with a special interest in any drone photo taken in a national park. Publicising this rule in /r/EarthPorn properly is a big part of this, so that we can rope in the users help. User help will imo be necessary since it's impossible for us to know all local laws.

[Official Brainstorm Thread] Ban illegal drone photos in /r/EarthPorn

Hey everyone,

/u/soupyhands and I have been discussing this problem for a few weeks now, we think that we should ban illegal drone photos in /r/EarthPorn to discourage other users to break drone flying laws as well "to get the shot". Social media can have a huge impact on the environment and bringing more attention/foot traffic to places that arent equipped to deal with this problem, vox actually recently made a video on this. Drones are more and more accessible, but law breaking drone pilots make flying drones for those who obey the law harder, since harder laws are created in an attempt to deal with the problem.

By illegal we mean quite literally breaking the law, e.g. flying your drone in a no fly zone in a National Park, which should be easy to check with sites like https://www.airmap.com/.

If the OP can provide proof that they received a permit from e.g. park authorities to fly their drone, then we should allow that post but flag it appropriately so that it's instantly visible that you generally are not allowed to fly your drone there.

As extension to this rule we should also consider banning all illegal photos that violate access restrictions. We have been removing posts for this in the past where it seemed appropriate and is easily proven as such, but having this set in stone as a rule would give us the necessary reasoning for the removal. Popular examples for this: climbing up arches in various desert parks that are off limits, trespassing to get closer to the hot springs in yellowstone NP, that one tree rotting in a pond or hot spring in a national park that for the love of me I cant find right now.

Please also read this thread with more details to the motivation for this rule and input from /r/EarthPorn users: https://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/9tjv5z/hey_earthporn_we_are_thinking_about_adding_a_new/

tl;dr ban illegal drone photos or even all illegal photos in /r/EarthPorn? Tell us your thoughts.
