After a lot of research I’ve decided on a CJ for our hunt camp vehicle. I’ve watching about a dozen videos on everything that can go wrong but before I start test driving I would appreciate input from the group.
I want it to be as absolutely simple and basic as possible. I am going 97 and up because I want to be able to do full OBD II scans at test drives.
I would love to just have hand crank windows but that may be too hard to find.
I would prefer a 5 speed manual - less complex and less to fix IMO (and yes I know clutches wear out).
My main question is 4wd vs 2wd. I think I know pros and cons of each but don’t personally know how capable a 2wd is off road. I will likely be on dirt roads and some backwoods with gaps on the highway going into town, etc. It will live in west/central Texas and our terrain isn’t too crazy but there are some washed out creek beds, hills, etc. I will likely only drive it 6-8 times a year when I’m there so I’ll leave it on a trickle charge (or take the battery home) and I want it to work every time.
Any and all input is welcome. Thanks in advance.
There's been a lot of feedback from the community about the flood of people asking what either an XJ/MJ they're looking at is worth or what they're selling is worth. Please post that here. Anywhere else on the subreddit will result in removal.
Helping buddy do his heater core. And we Mitch matched the hoses and we do not know which ones do what we need help. 2001 xj cherokee
Code that comes out is P0123. Changed the sensor and tested voltage with multimeter. When disconnecting the plug, it runs perfectly fine. Once connected, it starts to idle like crap. A couple months ago it was doing the same thing, I wiggled the plug and it was normal. Now it just shuts off. Help, what can I do to fix this issue?
Anyone know how to modify filler neck cover for cut n fold of rear quarter panel on the driver side?

Hey CherokeeXJ fam!
I'm super excited to announce that my fiance and I are kicking off an XJ build for my '97 Cherokee! 😎 We'll be running 33s on it, and we've got some fun plans in store. This journey is going to be documented on Instagram at alphasxj and we'll likely share some install videos on YouTube as well.
I’m all ears and open to your ideas to make this build even better for everyone following along. Whether it's mods, tips, or anything else you think would elevate this project, let me know! Looking forward to sharing this adventure with you all and getting your input. 🚀
Stay tuned for updates and feel free to drop your suggestions below! 🙌
A few updates on the XJ I bought in October and plans for the future
What I've done
- replaced spark plugs, trunk struts, headlight harnesses, re-attached spare in the trunk
- got a ski rack
What I want to do (and would love any tips if ya'll have any for these
- Replace fuel injectors with the KSUS ones (4 or 12? not sure)
- Big 7 cable upgrade from Jeep cables (wire leading to negative terminal is frayed, some electrical tape and dielectric grease have helped but have had issues with starting and just have to wiggle wire until it starts, so might as well upgrade all the big 7 while im at it)
- new headlights (have an issue with the driver being dim and I think it may be just due to age) i've heard the hella h4 housings and bulbs but open to any halogen suggestions!)
This summer
- Zone offroad 3" lift, going to splurge and go with the fox shocks, leaf springs are a little rusted anyway so might as well go all out
- DIY paint forest green
Edit:
- I also need to redo the wiring, to allow the driver window to roll down, and for the speakers to all work (currently only the back left works), and only I can control passenger and back seat windows.
Wanted to update yall on how the XJ journey has been, shes been an amazing way of getting me through the snow and up to the mountain so can't wait to make her even more great. Open to any suggestions or advice! Have a great one everyone.
My car left this on the ground this morning after idling for about 15 minutes. Only had been running for 30 minutes total or so from a cold start this morning. Is this normal? It took about 15 minutes to disappear so I’m concerned that it isn’t just water. When I’ve done my own research it says a puddle by the exhaust is normal especially in the winter but this isn’t so much a puddle as it is just a mist that accumulated on the ground. I also notice at night when I accelerate heavily I can see some smoke coming out my tailpipe behind me. Any help is greatly appreciated
Anybody running a gear reduction starter such as the Powermaster units? If so, what model and specs? How well does it work? Helping a buddy plan a stroker build and I know strokers need more power to turn over, and the $20 Rock Auto starter probably won't cut it haha. Battery cables are upgraded so any starter upgrade advice is greatly appreciated.
Already changed plugs, wires, cap, injectors, connectors, intake, coil, fuel filter and ignition cylinder not switch or fuel pump. Usually it is a 3 count on this turn over lag.
She is one of us now boys
Looks like i get to replace this again. Thankfully I could smell it and was trying to figure it out when it started on fire 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️.
Thought I'd hop in here for my first post! I'm hunting for my first XJ and found a pretty low mileage '96 Sport. It has been in NY its whole life, and the seller sent me these underside pics. Definitely has some rust, but I don't know how worried to be. Anyone have advice? I know the pics aren't perfect, but it's all I have to go off of before driving a few hours to see it myself. Thanks!
Shopping between this kit and a "super stock/Upcountry-ish/1" lift" setup for my 2000. What I want to know is what else you needed outside of the kit to get it comfy (if anything). Longer shackles/relocation brackets? Control arms? T-case drop/SYE? Brake lines? Just trying to determine the real cost of going the DPG route and adding 2".
On my 1997 I did all of the aforementioned with a 3.5" RE kit as well as upgraded steering components (JKS and Currie Currect-lync). In other words.... I know how this process can domino....
As this 2000 is 90% DD and 10% forest road camper I don't think I want to sink as much into it. If the DPG 2" was good to go without impacting/affecting drive quality requiring other components, I'd be more inclined to go that way as I know that OME suspension is top shelf.
So I have a 95 with around 178k on it, oils is looking pretty dark judging by what I find under the car after I park it for the night, so I'm think it's time for a change. I've seen people reccomend both but was wondering if yall had any options.
Where can I get a replacement? I know that there is a design available online and I can get them 3d printed, but materials available either aren’t flexible or not suitable for automotive use.
AX-15, NP-231, Dana 30 with high pinion gears up front, welded & plated stock rear diff, RC 4.5” lift, 2 sets of 37s and a snorkel
Picked it up on Saturday & did all the preventative maintenance but I reckon I’m on borrowed time with the stock axles lol any tips/advice/insight would be appreciated🙏🏾 pretty excited — always wanted a 2 door
My ‘98 XJ is in the shop getting a bunch of stuff done. They said the heater box was broken but they can’t order a new one because it’s so old. I looked on rock auto and didn’t see one. I see used ones on eBay for ~$300. Should I roll the dice one one of those or is there a secret parts place I should check out?
