Subreddit for bars of jazz?!

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but i'm looking for an answer and this seems like it could be the spot.

I recently visited London and went to stereo, covent garden and eastcheap records. Two equally great jazz themed bars which provided a great night out in both.

Anyone know where I can find similar places in the UK a bit further up north?

Anybody know a better subreddit for finding answers like this?

Searching for elusive episodes of Clive James's Postcard from...—especially the Melbourne Cup!

I’m on the hunt for a few episodes of Clive James's Postcard from..., that wonderfully sharp travelogue where Clive, with his uniquely droll yet insightful style, traipsed around the world’s cultural capitals and curious corners. You’ll know the series if you’ve ever watched him chortling in Tokyo or musing philosophically over the chaos of the New York skyline. The show aired between 1989-1999.

But one episode remains particularly elusive—the one where he attends the Melbourne Cup, our own Australian spectacle of raucous grandeur and audacious hats. I’ve scoured the internet and unearthed a few episodes here and there, but as for a box set, or even a modest compilation for purchase, I’ve turned up naught. If anyone out there could steer me in the direction of an archive, or even a proper collection with all the wit and wisdom preserved, I’d be most grateful.

Attached is a Rennie Ellis photo taken on the very day I believe he attended, likely 1995. It looked like it must have been a muddy affair. Here’s to Clive, whose humour and honesty made each postcard a letter worth framing.

Premium Bonds... anyone else get a random letter?

Hi fellow UK peeps.

I've held my premium bonds for about 12 months, but yesterday received a letter asking for me to send them a "signature" to "go ahead with my request".

Letter appears to be from NS&I, all of my personal details are correct (but doesn't include my NS&I number nor holder number), just a bit random as I've not done anything to generate a "request"!

I will ask on their live chat tomorrow... just wondering now (and no, the website doesn't show any prizes won).

I’m dead chuffed to receive these as a birthday gift. I love the movie and the score!

I’ve also been to Pennan (where they shot this film) and it was absolutely surreal!

Just about to get on the last bus back from town after a night out....

I've not caught the last bus home since before the pandemic. What can you offer to keep me awake for the next hour as it winds its way through the streets of Cambridge?

Cats, stories and jokes all welcome 🤗

What books are used in UK schools to prep kids for the 11+ exam?

Short backstory, I'm an expat planning to send my son to a school in the UK and we're preparing him to take the 11+ next year. I left school before the 11+ so I literally have 0 experience.

We've been using Bond 11+ books but they're more like tests to grade your kid rather than actually teach them stuff and in all honesty, some of the things in the books baffle me...

I've googled and not really found anything useful, a few books recommended seem way too simple for the level the Bond books is expecting.

So, as per topic, what books are your kids suffering as they face the 11+?

Wicked the Musical

Unpopular opinion but has anyone else seen Wicked and not been impressed? I just saw it with family (this is my secondary username because my daughter knows my other one and she loves it) and I was bored and was waiting for the end. Defying Gravity is a really good song and they all have phenomenal voices to be fair (even the chorus) and the storyline is good, but personally I thought most of the ‘songs’ didn’t really carry a proper tune that you could hum to. It was more sung dialogue that was all over the place. Maybe I’m just old fashioned because I love Phantom and Les Mis with ‘proper’ songs. Anyone else? Literally everyone I know thinks it’s amazing. I felt like the black sheep! Just me?

Help settle an argument?

Nobody actually has nail clippers on their keyring right? My partner saw some tiktok and is now convinced that's the correct and appropriate thing to do. I refuse to believe anyone actually does that.

In the 1993 Mr Blobby music video, which other video was he mimicking in the bit with the dark haired woman?

It’s on the tip of my tongue but I can’t for the life of me remember what the real song is. I’m hoping one of you lovely people has the knowledge I lack!

Apologise for those of you who wished to never be reminded of mr blobby ever again.

For anyone with pets, I've got to say, atmospheric drum and bass just drowns out virtually all the fireworks I'm sat here with 90s dnb on not too loud, watching telly with subtitles at the same time, and my cat and my 4 month old lab with a broken leg are sitting with me chilled as anything.

Has anyone (or know someone that has) won one of these car / watch raffles that are all over social media?

There seems to be so many that have popped up in the last few years with guaranteed draws and winners.

I’ve played a few times here n there, mainly on BOTB where there’s a spot the ball game which decides the winner vs random draw.

Wondering if anyone knows a winner?

Advice needed: Selling a year old static caravan.

So, to preface this, if anyone is thinking of buying a static caravan at a park dean; DONT DO IT.

Last year my Mum inherited a lump sum from a cousin of hers who she cared for in the last 15 years of her life. She decided on a whim, and against my better advice, to buy a static caravan. She travelled to a park dean park in South Wales with my sister and they both got sweet talked into buying a bloody brand new 80k caravan on the spot. She's now had it for 12 months, and she has only visited the damn thing three times. Other people have used it more than she has.

I have finally convinced her it's not a great investment and she would have been better off just paying for holidays whenever she wanted instead with the cash. She has gone back to park dean and they have offered her fucking 26k for it back. Insanity. She's bloody devastated.

So, my Hive-Mind second family, any ideas on a better way to sell the bastard chain around her neck? Or is she just going to have to swallow the cost and be done with it?

Love, someone who is thoroughly sick of Porthcawl

How many of you do bonfire night anymore?

I know it's three days away, but I'm not doing it. For me, it's just a way to waste your money. Last time I did it, my dad forgot to make sure the sparkler or whatever it was was fully out, and the bin caught on fire. I'm happy going to a fireworks show or something, but I personally don't like doing it. How about you lot?

Big up my animal experts!

A family member has sent me this video of their garden this morning. It was fine yesterday and overnight an animal has made a right mess of it. Any idea what kind of animal might cause this? I've never seen anything like it.
