Looking at a Norwregian Buhund

Hi everyone,

My dog recently passed away and I'm looking at possible breeds for another dog.

My last dog was a Nowregian Elkhound I'm wondering if anyone has had one before or come across them to be able to compare to a Buhund. Thanks!

Question on fur

So I don’t know if this is standard in dogs with curly tails or buhunds or just my dog. Near the base of his back the fur is parted slightly. On his first visit to the vet I was told it was fleas which I didn’t believe considering he was always with or on me and I had no fleas.

I listened to the vet and applied flea repellent and nothing. It’s well over a year now and the part is still there. There’s no issue but I’ve been wondering if I caused it by the tools I use to deshed him.

I’ve explained the part away by believing it’s just where his tail rest when it’s curled up. But with no other Buhund or curly tailed breeds around I can’t say for sure.

Am I right for assuming so?

Still chewing pillows at 22 months

She slept in her crate without complaint until 5 months ago. She didn't complain then either; we just decided it was time for her to sleep without the crate.

Roughly once a week she finds something to destroy. Pillows, couch arms, couch seats, wood railings, carpets, shoes. We never see it until it's too late for her to connect any disapproval with what she did.

Her cousin, our other dog, age 4, seems to understand everything, but the younger dog has always seemed blithe. (I've never used that word before but it seems perfect for her.) She's always carefree - never notices if we're upset by anything she's done.

She's adorable - if we ran a circus she'd be the star, but she's not only rambunctious. She loves to lie on us if we are lying on a couch, or lay her head on our feet if we're sitting.

Putting her back in her crate tonight. Hoping she'll still be peaceful in it, not keep us up all night.

When she barks non-stop at squirrels, I call her inside and reward her for coming. Am I training her to bark more?

I could not reward her for coming, but then her coming-when-called might dwindle. She might choose to stay out so she can keep barking.

She is 22 months old. Our other dog, her 4-year old cousin, is a dream.

Will she strictly link the reward to coming-when-called, or will she link the reward to barking-then-coming-when-called?

Did she train me? In order to activate the reward for coming, she needs to get me to call her, and she learned she can get me to call her if she barks.

What should I do?

Buhund in Winter

Hello! I have a 1.5yr old buhund whom we have graduated from a crate inside last winter, to the enclosed outdoor patio this winter. We live in Canada, so some days can get pretty cold, but knowing that buhunds are a Nordic breed, I was wondering if she even needs a doghouse inside the patio? It's enclosed, so no airflow from outside, but isn't heated. She has never looked cold, even after being outside for a time, and often she prefers to nap outside even when freezing. But she hasn't spent our workday outside in the coldest days of winter as of yet!

Thoughts?

Neutering your buhunds?

Hi all- we were planning on neutering our little Bu at 12 months per the vets reccomendation. However a bit of research has shown a potential correlation between that and cancer/ joint problems? Curious what all of you have done.

Bu is Afraid of All People and Dogs

Hello all! Our baby bu is finally here. It's been a few weeks getting him adjusted to the house and his yard, and he's getting more confident on his very small walks. The only thing I can't seem to get him used to is strangers, children, and other dogs. He's so afraid of strangers, even kids who are offering him treats. I thought the breed was supposed to be super great with kids, so I'm a little confused. Did I just get a fraidy cat? Did anyone else have a bu who started out super fearful? The socialization has been hard during the pandemic and we just moved to a new area where we don't know anyone to invite over.

Advice for an adult Buhund!

Hi! I'm about to go and meet a 2 year old Buhund that is at a local shelter. I'm pretty new to this breed, so I was hoping you lovely folks could help answer some questions.

I currently live in a condo (I own) and I am very active. Walking 2x a day, hiking and snowshoeing on weekends, etc. Do you think this will be adequate exercise?

Also, barking. I've read that this is a very vocal breed. I'm ok with some barking, but am wondering if the barking is truly as bad as the internet says.. barking while playing? Cool. Barking at any little sound? Might be tough in an apartment..

Please give me any tips or advice 😁

New Buhund Mom

Hi all,

Just joined Reddit, just joined this group. We have a baby bu coming our way in a few short weeks and like any new dog mom, I'm fretting and over-preparing. Any advice is welcome, but in particular - what kind of chew toys should we get? He will be 9 weeks old and we were told they are "hard chewers" but I don't actually know what that means. I am also seeing a lot of sizes of chew toys within the puppy category, so I could also use some suggestions for what size to get a 9 week old.

Buhunds in San Francisco?

Hello all! My partner and I live in a single family home with a small yard in San Francisco, and are hoping to get a puppy. We are enamored by Norwegian Buhunds, but wanted to get some experienced opinions first.

  • Do you think a Buhund would do well in the SF weather?
  • Any recommendations for training a Buhund to not bark so much, so we can stay in good relation with our neighbors?
  • Does anyone have experience with leaving the Buhund alone at home a couple days a week? I have read they get bored and destructive, is this at all possible?

Thanks so much for the advice!

how much exercise?

Hi everyone -- I have a buhund puppy - she has been with me a little over a week (now 10 weeks old) I want to be sure i am not exercising her too much.

We go out to the lawn about 4 times a day and along with a lot of sniffing and watching other beasties run on the soft grass about 10 minutes a day total - in short bursts. I do a bit of training with her when we come in and then she is ready for good long nap. We are out quite a long time but active only in short bursts. I find without those little running sessions she is very hyperactive in doors. Thoughts welcome

Puppy won’t stop barking at night- PLZ HELP

We just picked up our 8 week old baby Buhund 6 days ago. We have been putting him in a crate at night. First few nights next to our bed, then in the doorway, now in the room next door. He’s been consistently barking/ crying for about 30 minutes before falling asleep. Tonight over TWO HOURS. Finally we had to go let him out, I’m in an apartment and am afraid of my neighbors getting upset. He has his toys, a soft towel and his litter box. We’ve tried a blanket over the crate and blanket off. I’m at a loss for what to do. Please help!
