BooksAMA is a reddit for "Ask Me Anything" threads about books. If that idea sounds weird to you, check out the submission that started it all.

Guidelines:

  • Finish the book. BookAMAs are for books that you've read, not books that you're reading.

  • Search for the title of your book. Repeating books is allowed, but if you're repeating a book that's been done recently, join that conversation instead.

  • Mark books [f] for fiction, or [nf] for non-fiction.

  • Top-level posters are expected to check in at least several times over the first eight hours after creating an AMA, and ideally several more times over the next 24 to 48 hours. "Abandoned" AMAs (where the OP doesn't answers any questions) will be deleted. Be advised that only when a reasonable amount of time has gone by, usually a day, in which the OP doesn't answer any questions (or only one out of many) may the post be deleted. If there are special circumstances where you can't for a period of time, please message the mods and we'd be glad to not delete it.

  • Assume spoilers Readers should beware that the discussion will most likely deal with important plot points. If you plan on reading the book, you may want to hold off on reading the AMA.

  • Have the book handy. You might want to refer back to the text.

  • If you've also read the book, it's your AMA, too. BookAMA is ultimately just another way of managing book discussion, so the more people who've read a given book, the better. Jump in and give your opinion.

Do book clubs really help?

I want to get back to reading. I have tons of intent. My book collection is evidence of that. BUT I find it hard to be consistent about reading. Im not one of those persons who can say I read X books in Y time frame. If Im reading something and like it, I will finish it OR more often stop halfway and not pick up a book for Y time frames(S)

I have tried different strategies to get back to reading. like "30 minutes everyday". But I have always found ways and seemingly rationale reasons to keep pushing those 30 minutes to later and later in the day until its tomorrow.

Then I tried "30 minutes before bed time" (got more specific). Long story short, that strategy did not also work.

I have tried others like "Buy a book a month" -> resulted in a respectable unread book collection. OR "Read with wife" -> She is multiple books ahead of me.

My latest attempt is book clubs. Which comes to my question to you guys who read regularly.

  • Do you find book clubs helpful in cultivating a healthy reading habit (ie: enough intrinsic motivation to crank up my reading engine)
  • do you guys do local bookclubs? or online? any preferences?
  • do you guys meet regularly/semi-regularly to discuss books

How can I search for articles written by professionals about books?

I apologize if this question comes off as too basic or uneducated, especially for this subreddit. However, I believe that the you can offer some helpful suggestions.

I have always enjoyed reading books, but I have come to realize that simply reading a book is not enough to truly understand its meaning. To fully comprehend a book, it is important to understand the context in which it was written, such as the time periodtrends, and behaviors of the people during that time.

I have tried to find articles about the books I have read, but I have only come across websites with "unprofessional" articles written by "non-experts". Thus, I am wondering if anybody can recommend a free online database that can offer me access to articles about books.

Where do I read books for free? if there isn’t a place for free books, what’s the best app/subscription? where you type in the name of the book, and you can start reading without having to pay per book since I paid for the subscription

I just finished reading The Great Gatsby. And ... I have some questions.

  1. WHY does Daisy choose Tom over Gatsby? I ask this genuinely. I know Daisy likes money, but Tom and Gatsby have virtually the same amount. Plus, Gatsby truly loves Daisy, while Tom constantly cheats on her. So why, at the end of the novel, does Daisy still choose Tom?
  2. At the end of the novel, do you think Tom really will "take better care of" Daisy like he promised, of his own free will? Meaning, will Tom really become a changed man after promising this to Daisy?
  3. Why does Nick profess to dislike Gatsby, but still say he respects him the most of any man? I don't understand what Gatsby did to make Nick dislike him.
  4. Why did Daisy cut Gatsby so completely out of her life after the scene in the Plaza Hotel? Like, was it Tom who didn't allow her to telephone Gatsby or attend his funeral, or was Daisy just heartless and uncaring?

Prequel chapter for The Thousandth Floor Series

I just finished reading Katharine McGee’s The Thousandth Floor series (which I loved). I just found out that there's a PREQUEL chapter, and I really want to read it! The thing is, I can't find it anywhere online.

Apparently, the prequel talks about the lives of everyone in the summer before the first book (June 2118). Including Calliope and Brice’s first meeting in Singapore.

If anyone has the prequel or a link to it, PLEASE share it! I really want to read it and can’t access it anywhere. :)

Is The Great Trouble a Feel Good, Upbeat Book All The Way Thru, or At All (not just happy ending?...if it even has a happy ending...?)

While the focus of this book would not generally inspire one to expect a feel good, upbeat all the way thru, story; the public library review writes it up as such:

I find it's very common for articles, book jackets, etc to describe books as feel good; then I start reading them & find a large focus on murder, characters dieing of terminal disease, plagues, rape etc... none of which do I find as feel good stories; even if humor, inspirational comments, or people having a positive attitude about it are thrown in.

However, the negative things I just listed can simply be mentioned, as a reference, not described in detail, not happening live to the chatacters in the story, not the focus of the book, -- & then it might still be a feelgood or upbeat book.

This doesn't mean I might not read or appreciate the book, but I do appreciate reviews that aren't misleading. And I do like solution-oriented fiction, & books where people succeed, save the day, & keep upbeat & determined despite the odds that may be against them.

...But once again, if a book features a lot of death, loss, &/or suffering; especially if close up, personal, &/ or described in detail, I wouldn't call that feel good.

So is it feel good?

Or if not...but you think it's done in a way that focuses entirely on solutions & successes, & there aren't distressing details & sad stories; plz explain. ( It's not clear to me how much detail one is allowed to reveal about books in this group, but though I've made a point in not even revealing things posted in reviews; I'm fine w/anything being shared, if it's allowed here (& you're welcome to msg me additional notes).

Thanx so much!

What does "RM-EXP" referred to books?

I noticed this note while shopping for books online. Some titles are available in this version (usually at a lower price), but I can't understand what it means.

Help finding this book: Primer for Those Who Would Govern: In a World Parliament" by Hermann Oberth. Does anyone have it or know where I could find it?

I've become interested in reading the last book Hermann Oberth (one of the forefathers of modern rocketry and Von Braun's mentor) wrote before his death, but it seems almost nonexistant... here's a link to Abebooks that has ISBNs and alternate titles: https://www.abebooks.com/9780914301066/Primer-Who-Govern-World-Parliament-0914301063/plp

Does anyone have a copy or know where I could acquire one? I'd also be interested in the opinion of any one who has read the book too.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for this book and I just can't remember the name please help (it's been a few years so this is what I remember not necessarily going to be exactly correct)

I read this book a few years ago and it was about this girl and I don't remember her dad either died or disappeared and she got shipped off to a private school and she didn't know where the school was and she got there and it was like really weird it wasn't a normal school there was like combat training like fights and knife throwing and archery and she made a best friend and I think the girl's name was Layla or something I don't know and then the friends brother ended up getting with this chick at some point I remember that they stayed in dorms and that the school was just surrounded by Green and nobody knew where it was also this girl's house had like a force behind it or something and I think that someone like broke into the house so she was out in the forest and she came back in and found like a bunch of her dad's weapons or something I know this isn't specific haha but if you have any ideas please help, also it's been suggested but I know that it's not marked or throne of Glass series although I am pretty sure it was a book series

I can't find this one book

Hello! I was wondering if anyone else has read this book before since i started reading it last year, but i eventually stopped reading and completely forgot about the title and author. From what I remember, one of the characters names is Lane. The other main character, a girl I can't remember the name of, was walking home late one night when she thought someone was following her. Lane was also following behind her and beat up the guy that was following her. He then snuck into her house or something... I can't remember much, but I know it was a very popular book last year. (It was also spicy-)

Please help me find it!!!

I just finished reading Lie by Me by Gytha Lodge

Early on we learn that the murder weapon, found next to the body, was a very distinctive knife. A finite number were made and sold by a company in Poland.

When they finally discover a connection between one of the purchasers and the victim, they think they've got the murderer, but the purchaser has his knife on display in his den. It's not the one by the body.

Attention to the knife fades until they discover that the purchaser had temporarily left his knife (a birthday gift) at a bar the night of the murder. This leads to the arrest of the bartender.

Question - If the murder weapon was the one owned by the purchaser found early in the book, AND the murder weapon was found by the body, how could the murder weapon also be found in the purchaser's study?

I kept hoping for an explanation. Didn't find it.

Just finished reading Working [nf] by Robert A. Caro. AMA

I just finished reading a short book, Working: Researching, Interviewing, Writing by Robert. A. Caro. He is known for his biographies of Robert Moses (The Power Broker) and of Lyndon Johnson, and for his extensive research of these subjects.

It's his research methods I was interested in learning about, and this book definitely gave me some of that. Early in his career, when he was working as a journalist, one of his bosses gave him a lesson in investigative reporting in a nutshell: Just remember, turn every page. Never assume anything. Turn every goddamned page. This seems to have formed the nucleus of Caro's method, as the amount of research he put into his subsequent subjects is huge, and paid off. He gives examples of digging through boxes full of files in boxes with labels that would make one think they're just full of inconsequential trivia, but after sifting through enough of such boxes he'll find a memo or something alluding to something that gives him a solid lead on real information.

This book gave me a lot to think about, and also makes me want to read at least some of his biographies.

Ask Me Anything

Edit: For those interested but not yet sure of reading the book, this is the interview/article that made me pick up the book: Robert Caro Talks Writing and Research: ‘Turn Every Page’, in The Daily Beast

Just finished reading The invisible life of Addie LaRue

I have a question. Am I the only one who have noticed that in the book Henry's eye colour kind of changes? First it was mentioned that he has grey eyes but then they are green. Has anyone else noticed? If yes, what do you think about it?
