rhoner's "today you, tomorrow me" post is a touching story well-told. I'm not going to attempt to summarize it here; you'll just have to read it for yourself. I will say that this was probably the most hard-fought category, with thousands of upvotes being cast across 11 extremely-deserving finalists.
Congratulations to rhoner, to the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
On August 31, Mr. Sam Mercer made what would turn out to be one of the most influential selfposts in reddit's history. "I've had a vision and I can't shake it", he began, unknowingly launching a huge grassroots campaign to bring about a satirical political rally in Washington, D.C.
Now, Jon Stewart may have already been thinking about holding a rally. But would he have pulled the trigger without the Internet's demonstration of support, or would it have ended up in the dustbin of good ideas never pursued? Would he have invited Stephen to co-host? We'll never know the answers to these questions, but we can say with certainty that if Sam hadn't made his post, the rally wouldn't have turned into Reddit's Woodstock. And we would never have raised over $600,000 for needy schoolchildren.
For all the good that has come out of his post, the reddit community has chosen to name it the 2010 Submission of the Year.
Congratulations to Sam, to the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
Starting out as a novelty account, ProbablyHittingOnYou quickly dropped the gimmick and started posting comments of such quality and quantity that the reddit community decided to name him the 2010 Commenter of the Year.
Congratulations to PHOY, to the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
The reddit community has chosen DrJulianBashir as its 2010 Submitter of the Year. His submission history speaks for itself, both in terms of upvotes and topic breadth, easily making him reddit's second-favorite person named Julian.
Congratulations to the doctor, to the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
Congratulations to Sure_Ill_Draw_That, to the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
MrGrim founded imgur. Before that, posting images to reddit was a pain in the neck. You had to create an account somewhere, upload a file (of limited size), suffer possible watermarks or compression artifacts, and post that to reddit. Often you weren't allowed to link directly to the picture, but instead had to link a busy page full of junk and ads. And once the picture became popular, it would be replaced with a "Bandwidth Exceeded" frog.
MrGrim saved us from all that, and for this, the reddit community has chosen him as their Best All-Around Hero for 2010 -- as well as the first winner of two different Best of Reddit categories.
Congratulations to MrGrim, the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
We (the admins) can personally vouch for Kylde's incredible work, both in terms of quality and sheer volume. Kylde scours the site for spammers, figures out what domains they're shilling for and whom they're in cahoots with. This detective work is supplemented by the work of the other RTS volunteers. If it weren't for their contributions (and Kylde's tireless coordination thereof), there would be a lot more spam on reddit -- and a lot more innocent victims of the spam filter.
Congratulations to Kylde, /r/ReportTheSpammers, the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
Invented offsite but turned into a community here, rage comics were the original "anyone can make a comic" template that has spawned so many variants (including one of our other Best of 2010 winners).
Thanks to the hard work of /r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu (that's seven F's and twelve U's), you can now share other redditors' joys and frustrations without having to resort to reading boring old words. They also popularized a CSS hack that allows images to be inserted into comments, along with secret mouseover text.
Oh, you didn't know about the mouseovers? Time to reread two and a half years worth of comment pages. (At least you can make a comic about it.)
Congratulations to /r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu, to the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
Created as a spinoff of AskReddit, /r/answers aims to be reddit's knowledgebase. You can find the answer to things you always wondered, like why the brain is in the head or how blind people clean up after their seeing-eye dogs without having to wade through survey questions like, "Was I in the wrong?" or "Does anyone else breathe?"
Check out its new queue, see if you can answer anyone's question, or jump in and ask one of your own.
Congratulations to /r/answers, to the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
Thanks to the Internet, we now know that anyone can make a comic, and that sometimes they're sort of actually worth reading. DogFort is the latest example of this. If you're unfamiliar with this ongoing adorable battle between cats and dogs, this is a good primer.
Congratulations to /r/DogFort, to the other finalists, and to everyone else who was nominated.
When this post is about 12 hours old, we're going to start announcing the winners of the Best of 2010 awards.
The plan is to post one an hour, at the top of the hour.
Stay tuned!
