guidelines
This subreddit is for people that want to build a PC in Canada. Anything discussion relating to hardware or software is allowed.
If you see spam or anything off-topic, report it.
Downvotes are for irrelevant posts, not posts that you don't agree with.
Make sure what you post is in Canadian dollars and state if otherwise.
Don't be a dick.
rules
1. Be respectful and inclusive.
Discrimination of any kind and personal attacks are strictly forbidden. This includes derogatory words based on ethnicity, sexuality, etcetera, as well as comments disparaging a person based on their background or gender.
2. Don't reveal other people's personal information.
If a person mentions what city they live in for the sake of identifying a store in an area around them, that's perfectly acceptable, however, any details that mention a person's current place of residence are not allowed.
3. Do not post illegal, NSFW, objectively disturbing content or gore.
This sub is rated 13+, like the rest of Reddit.
4. Do not violate Reddit's self-promotion guidelines.
Reddit asks that all users maintain a 10:1 ratio in terms of comments:posts. While this falls under the moniker of 'spam', if your account has a sea of submissions to various subs and nothing else, you are considered to be spamming.
5. Do not post links to pirated material or unlicensed third party resellers.
Reddit's terms of service prohibits links to pirated distribution, or modifications, tools, keygens, warez that aid in violating copyright and intellectual property. As an extension, third party resellers also very frequently engage in key or credit card fraud, which harm software developers and may harm potential buyers. To prevent this subreddit from being shut down for violating Reddit's guidelines, link to official copies of software only. Reuploads and telling people to search terms = okay.
6. Do not use affiliate links.
As the sub grows, the intended meaning of it gets forgotten, which is to help people build a PC. A handful of people (or bots, they're quite hard to spot nowadays) have decided that, perhaps, it is better to advertise something completely unrelated, and receive compensation for it. This yields to people getting hardware that is unsuitable, either in price or performance. Hence, no affiliate links - you cannot profit off this subreddit.

Now I just need a nice low power PSU. I was going to go with the suggested CORSAIR RM550x but unfortunately it's no longer available. Any educated suggestions? Thanks a ton!
Thanks to the community, I learn a lot. But it is my first build and I probably still have to learn. Thank you!

This is the build that I whipped up in PCpartpicker. Please poke holes in it if I'm missing something. https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/KwqWb2
1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
90% work (multiple concurrent running VM's/about 30 browser tabs open at any time/Many Excel sheets and programs running at once)
I have 6 monitors that I need to run with this rig. 2-1080p, 2-2k, 2-4k. I plan to run the 2 1080p off of the CPU integrated graphics and the other 4 monitors off of the GPU
10% gaming @ 1440p ( Diablo 4, Hearthstone, Cyberpunk)
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
$3000ish
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
ASAP, ordering within a week
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)
Just the tower. All accessories are still going to be used from current rig.
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
(2) 1080p BenQ monitors, (2) Gigabyte 27" 1440p 144Hz Gaming monitors, (2) 27" LG 4K 60Hz monitors, DuckyOne 2 Keyboard, Logitech Mx Master 3 wireless mouse. I also have a 1600W EVGA Titanium power supply from a decommissioned crypto miner that I'm going to use for this. I have a 10G mellanox ConnectX-3 for LAN, so no wifi needed.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
Probably not. Maybe? Never done it.
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
None of the above.
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Would prefer full size ATX case, no RGB. Would just like plain black. Function over form.
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
Nay, linux.
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
Will probably just completely upgrade unit when time comes.
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)
AMD for CPU and AMD for GPU only. (Linux compatibility) I have Nvidia GPU right now and it's a big pain.
12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.
Nope, want to build new.
13. Extra info or particulars:
Not sure if I should be getting an AIO cooler. I've only ever used air coolers and I've used Dark Rock Pro 4 in the my current rig and am very happy with it. If it isn't enough for new AMD CPU's, then I'm open to an AIO.
Hi! I am a newbie in PC world, I would like to upgrade from PS5 to PC. What are some good prebuilt’s on the market currently? I would appreciate any help. Budget; $1400 with tax
Don't know enough about motherboards to decide what one would be good for this build. This pc will be hooked up to a 1080 TV for streaming sports, watching movies and maybe a bit of Fortnite and Minecraft. The purchase parts I have already from a project that didn't happen. The GPU will just be a used one to start until it gets a hand me down 7800XT. I have an M.2 wifi card laying around somewhere if the board of choice doesn't have wifi. Thanks!
I recently purchased a monitor from CC and after setting it up, I’m realizing that this isn’t going to work well for my needs. I didn’t know that it would look quite slanted and it isn’t adjustable. I asked before purchasing what’s the return policy and was told I got 15 days and I clarified that I opened it up and set it up and the employee didn’t seem to phased about it, I went back to CC and asked another employee and he said that I can only return it if there are defects. Can I return this monitor? I did see a monitor with a sticker on it OB and some numbers so I’m assuming they do return open box monitors?
What’s my best bet for getting a 5700x3d on the cheap these days? About the only times I’m seeing it go on sale is from Aliexpress, which I’m hesitant on ordering from (especially with the Canada Post strike right now). Has anyone seen them go on sale elsewhere lately?
Side note: what would everyone recommend for GPU pairings for this chip? I’m probably looking to keep things at 1080p 120fps (for some games) or 1440p 60fps in the future.
Is it worth to buy an extra 2 year warranty from Memory Express for my Gigabyte 7800XT?
Its 70 CAD for it and it looks like they provide you with a new one, if it has an issue and they cant fix it. I guess its smoother than going through an RMA via Gigabyte?
Thoughts?
Hi. It's been about 6 years and think it's time to get a new PC.
I'm also an idiot, so looking a prebuilt stuff.
Found one on Memory Express that looks alright, and the price isn't that much different than what I see plugging everything into pcpartpicker.
$3,349.99 prebuilt vs $3242.21 pcpp.
I'd be happy paying an extra $200 to avoid bumbling around and breaking something.
Does it look like I'm missing something between the builds? If the price difference is actually more like $500, or if there's a junk part in there I didn't notice, I guess not being lazy and trying to build it would make more sense.

I took an order from memory express on Saturday evening. It's been "InProcess" for the past 2 days. Is anyone else here experiencing delays with memory express, and if so, do you have any idea when things will start to get moving? I've tried contacting them, but I have not been able to reach them.
Just checked my credit card site, and saw a new pending transaction from BestBuy. I ordered my 9800x3d on November 11, and at that time the bestbuy pages said that all backorders would ship by November 25. Well, they are a week late, but I'm still happy to see that they are getting a steady trickle of new product. Hopefully, it is a decent amount so all of you that backordered around that time will soon have a shiny new cpu in your hands.
Can't wait. I'm hoping I get the shipping notification tonight, and it should reach me by early next week.
Right now the 7900x is $459 on newegg and the 9700x is $439. The $20 difference makes these essentially the same price; is one clearly better for that difference? (Also are these actually good prices or is there a better deal waiting when Black Friday/cyber Monday cools off)
I’ll be gaming in 1440p and not doing too much else with my system. I understand the 9700x has a 65w TDP but would likely go above that while gaming anyways. It’s Zen 5 but idk if that really means much in the real world.
My dyslexia is getting the better of me I can barely look at their names without getting confused.
Thanks for your input!
Im unsure if ordering parts is a good idea right now because of the canada post strike. I Understand that newegg generally uses purolator, but orders coming from their U.S. warehouse seem to be apart of purolators "puropost" system where they hand off the parcel to canada post for final delivery. Does anyone know if this is true?
Many, many years ago (when a GTX 970 was considered good for "future-proofing") a friend helped me pick out parts to build myself a gaming PC and I never really looked into a new one since. However, it's starting to really show its age and it would be nice to have an actually usable modern PC.
I've also been eying this prebuild from Canada Computers rather than waffling over the choices, but I wanted to come ask some people who have a better idea of what they're doing first if I could build a comparable or better one for less.

Saw this on Costco.ca but also qualifies for 300$ off 2000$ or more spending is this a good deal?
Ram is ddr5
Thanks for input :)
Canada Computers shipped my processor with Canada Post after the CP strike was announced. Its been in limbo ever since. Dont think Ill be ordering from them again.
Hi Reddit, I'm looking to build the following system (Ignore the prices, these aren't what I'm actually paying).

My parts list: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/JWRzNz
I've purchased most stuff already but some are in the mail.
Only thing is maybe saving some ~$50 on the AMD cpu-mobo-ram bundle through CC (was browsing through their ryzen 7700x combos). haven't decided on the GPU yet but thinking of the 6750 XT for $430. I wanted a budget cpu with integrated graphics and didn't realize that the 7700x had integrated graphics too. Not sure what other deal or gpu deals I am missing out.
not the wattage size, but the actual manufacturer size.
I have corsair sf1000l which is smaller size power, but 1000wattage
and I realized its a small size power once i received it and I do not know if i have go for regular size power or not. but in this case i have to lower power to 850w due to the price. (sf1000l was good deal)
do size affect the performance by a lot? or just use it
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/XxWcqH
I already have the Fractal Terra Case,
Is this the best Bang for my Buck for VR? Where could I save/spend better with any current sales? Goal was ~$1500 but I've obviously overshot it a bit.

8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

Current build is from 2017 and outdated: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/22NzNz
I would like to leave the current PC as is and make a new build for this one.
13. Extra info or particulars:
I was graciously offered a free 3080 FE GPU.
So that eliminates one thing I would need to purchase so I can build my first PC.
Was wondering if anyone has any bundles from CC which would work well with this graphics card. I’ve seen others post links about nice cpu bundles which seem like great deals.
But I’m a noob to all this lol.
If I don’t go build my own build route, I was gonna get a prebuilt from CC. This one in particular-
It looks like it has all the bells and whistles for a smooth experience.
I don’t mind dishing out the cash for the prebuilt but if I can make good use of this free graphics card I think I will be saving a lot of money.
This computer will mainly be used for entertainment and occasional games. I want something which is nice though. And something which can last a good amount of years before I need to upgrade.
There was only 1 piece left in whole BC and I bought it on Black Friday night
But till now only payment confirmed No other update
Is it due to weekend??
I want to order an NZXT H5 elite for pickup from store but the stores near me are all out of stock. On the product page it says "BACKORDER at Montreal, QC" but it doesnt give me an option to backorder. Does this backorder thing just mean they are waiting for a new shipment or am is it like a preorder thing and I'm missing a button somewhere?
If they are just waiting for a new shipment does anyone know if theres a usual time when the website updates ?
Thanks!

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
$2500 Canadian, but for my purposes that seems like over doing it. I'm looking at the games coming out in the next year and I'm not seeing anything I'm interested in. The current high-fidelity games are not grabbing me.
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
As soon as possible because my current PC is not working and Cyber Monday deals are right now. I think I can wait until the next AMD and NVIDIA GPUs come out.
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)
Please include a tower and a 1440 monitor with good HDR lighting. Do I have to get Windows 11?
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
I think my 2600 Super is working fine. I have two 1080p monitors that work fine but don't have HDR/the new bells and whistles from the last 8 years of monitor tech.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
No.
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I think I want lots of VRAM because my stream uses some features in OBS and it asks to use VRAM... if I run, say, Baldur's Gate 3 and I'm streaming it, I want enough VRAM so the stream doesn't stutter or whatever.
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I have zero interest in flashing rainbow lights or a nice look case or any of that. Just one glass side so I can look in and see that it's all ok in there :)
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
Yeah I think I need Windows 11 :( would rather have 10...
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
It would be awesome if the PC could support a 5000 series NVIDIA card or whatever AMD is coming out with next year, and the power supply and the motherboard and everything would play nice.
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)
No brand loyalty here, just whoever at this moment has quality parts at the right price!
12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.

I tried to upgrade this PC but it decided to die right as I was preparing it...
13. Extra info or particulars:
Thank you so much for your help :)
Currently Canada Computers has a few cpu/mobo/ram bundle deals that seem to be okay. I'm helping someone upgrade their computer to do mainly live-streaming (weekly in-person broadcasts). This one seemed hopeful given what seems to be current black friday deals:
Intel Core i7-12700KF CPU + ASUS Prime Z790-P WiFi Motherboard + T-Force 32GB D5 6000MHz CL30 RAM
Are people still iffy on 13/14 gen intel cpus? The other parts I'll mostly strip off their old pc, but I'm just wondering if the package itself is worth it or if there's something I can substitute anything for a comparable price. I know not everyone enjoys Canada Computers.
Thanks.
