guidelines

  • This subreddit is for people that want to build a PC in Canada. Anything discussion relating to hardware or software is allowed.

  • If you see spam or anything off-topic, report it.

  • Downvotes are for irrelevant posts, not posts that you don't agree with.

  • Make sure what you post is in Canadian dollars and state if otherwise.

  • Don't be a dick.

rules

1. Be respectful and inclusive.

Discrimination of any kind and personal attacks are strictly forbidden. This includes derogatory words based on ethnicity, sexuality, etcetera, as well as comments disparaging a person based on their background or gender.

2. Don't reveal other people's personal information.

If a person mentions what city they live in for the sake of identifying a store in an area around them, that's perfectly acceptable, however, any details that mention a person's current place of residence are not allowed.

3. Do not post illegal, NSFW, objectively disturbing content or gore.

This sub is rated 13+, like the rest of Reddit.

4. Do not violate Reddit's self-promotion guidelines.

Reddit asks that all users maintain a 10:1 ratio in terms of comments:posts. While this falls under the moniker of 'spam', if your account has a sea of submissions to various subs and nothing else, you are considered to be spamming.

5. Do not post links to pirated material or unlicensed third party resellers.

Reddit's terms of service prohibits links to pirated distribution, or modifications, tools, keygens, warez that aid in violating copyright and intellectual property. As an extension, third party resellers also very frequently engage in key or credit card fraud, which harm software developers and may harm potential buyers. To prevent this subreddit from being shut down for violating Reddit's guidelines, link to official copies of software only. Reuploads and telling people to search terms = okay.

6. Do not use affiliate links.

As the sub grows, the intended meaning of it gets forgotten, which is to help people build a PC. A handful of people (or bots, they're quite hard to spot nowadays) have decided that, perhaps, it is better to advertise something completely unrelated, and receive compensation for it. This yields to people getting hardware that is unsuitable, either in price or performance. Hence, no affiliate links - you cannot profit off this subreddit.

Recommend me a new PC build for 1440p casual AAA gaming and simulation games

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.

Casual gamer, mostly AAA games and esports titles on a reasonable fps@1440p med to high, play also simulation games like Cities Skylines 2.

2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?

CAD$1400, can stretch to CAD$1500.

3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

ASAP, most likely within this week.

4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

CPU Tower(matx) only, I already have a 1440p 165hz monitor, keyboard, mouse and OS.

5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.

no parts, sold my entire PC a few months back and using a laptop currently.

6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?

no, not interested.

7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

mobo must have wifi and BT(matx), minimum of 1TB SSD(nvme preferred).

8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

I would like a matx case and no RBG, all black preferred.

9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.

no, already have a copy.

10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?

probably going to upgrade after 3-5 years if budget permits.

11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)

AMD preferred, no to Intel due to the current gen debacle.

12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.

Current laptop: Lenovo Legion Gaming 3, i5-12500H, RTX 3050 Ti(4GB), 16GB DDR43200, 1TB NVME SSD

13. Extra info or particulars:

none

Can you build a pc for $700 (no monitor or keyboard) that can run these games?

I’m considering getting out of consoles since the announcement of the PS5 Pro, and I don’t really like modern graphic heavy games. Anyways, I like a lot of retro games. I’m wondering if I can build something for $700 that can play these comfortably at 60 frames at 1080p:

Diablo 2: R & Diablo 4

Grim Dawn

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection

Castlevania, Contra Collections

Just getting ideas. Thanks.

Looking to build from scratch. I'm a 34 year old boomer with not much time to game, I'm mainly looking to be able to run WoW for the next 5 or so years.

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.

  • Gaming, mainly WoW but I'd also like to run some newer titles. 1080p or 2k is fine, I'm not a stickler for graphics. It doesn't need to be insanely future proof.

2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?

900-1000 if possible, but I'm flexible.

3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

I would like to start accumulating parts now, I might space it out a bit.

4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

Just the tower.

5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.

an older samsung monitor, 1080p, 75 hz.

6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?

Not really

7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

SSD for sure

8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

Nope!

9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.

Yes I believe so.

10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?

Potentially, but not for a few years.

11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)

Nope

12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.

It's pretty bricked and all the parts are pretty old.

13. Extra info or particulars:

Nope

4080 Super/4090 build review

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Y2xfJy

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.

Gaming. Single player AAA. Outlaws, AC Shadows, Indy, Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk, etc.

I’ll be playing on a 60Hz OLED, so I’m looking for 60FPS 4K with maximum settings, ray tracing, etc

2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?

~$4000

3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

This week

4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

The tower and everything inside it. I don’t need anything external.

5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.

Nothing’s being reused.

6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?

Nope

7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSDs, mass HDDs, Wi-Fi / Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc.)

Nope

8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

Mid-tower/full-tower is fine. I don’t care at all about lighting or appearance.

9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free at OnTheHub or through their school's IT software distribution department.

Nope

10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?

Current build is with a 4090. I might go to a 4080 Super instead, and eventually upgrade to a 5090.

11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc.)

I want the 7800x3D

12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.

Current gaming PC is over eight years old, I don’t plan on using any parts.

13. Extra info or particulars:

I realize how silly it is to buy a 4090 when a 5090 is potentially so close. So I might switch to a 4080 Super. But I can also afford to be a bit silly and buy the 4090.

Other than the CPU and GPU, I’m not tied to anything at all in the provided build. It’s mostly based on what seems reasonable (in terms of performance and price), and is in stock at my local Canada Computers. I haven’t built a PC since 2016, so I’m hopelessly out of date in terms of what’s the best stuff out there.

Going For a High-End AMD Build, How's This?

Hey y'all! I'm looking to do a higher end AMD build. My budget is $2k before tax. I run Manjaro Linux, so the OS is not a concern, but I haven't added a monitor yet. Here is the link below, what would you all recommend I change about it to maximize cost:performance ratio?

Can Canada Computers flash BIOS for me?

Hi, my PC has an ASUS Prime A320M-K motherboard, and it doesn't have a flashback button. I accidentally forgot to change the BIOS file name using the .exe before I flashed it, and now my PC won't boot, and I don't have any spare CPUs. Would I be able to take it to Canada Computers to get it flashed for me/how much would doing that cost?

Building a 1440p PC, How is this build?

Hi all, first time posting on here so sorry for any errors. This is my second PC build, any input would be greatly appreciated. Would obviously like to make it cheaper , but if thats not possible without a significant dip in performance and longevity (plan to have this for 5 years at least) then all good.

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Ph4qxH

*Note: CPU and MBO are a bundle

Will mostly be playing games like COD. GPU intensive games mostly, as well as some CPU games like Valorant.

Looking to upgrade sons GPU/CPU

Right now I have a 1070 for the GPU and a Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-10100F CPU @ 3.60GHz. What would be some good upgrades I could do for around $700-$1000?

Thanks!

Cheap motherboard/cpu combo.

My parents are wanting me to upgrade their computer since it's 11 years old and are worried about Windows 11. I've told em to wait it out and that we probably could get windows 11 running on it if we had to.

Either way, what's a cheap combo for basic browsing and other basic software? The case and PSU are still good, and I have DDR4 ram laying around.

So before I order my first ever gaming PC, i want to make sure everything is correct and get to know your opinion on it.

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/VRP67R Here's the link for the PC parts/peripherals

I currently already have a headset and a monitor, the monitor is 1080p 160hz.

I'll mainly be playing FPS games, with some sim racing on the side. Am I overspending on the gaming PC? Please let me know in the comments, thanks.

Looking for your onions on what to do with my old build

Hello! I have a PC that's kinda been a mid tier performer for a long time but it's really started to show it's age in the last couple years. I know how to assemble a PC but I don't truly have a deeper understanding of how everything works, so I don't believe I can make the right choice on upgrading or moving on. Like I don't know how to spot performance bottlenecks or dabble in overclocking. I just know how to put it together, read temps and FPS. I'd really appreciate to hear some opinions. Here's the gist of my old build:

Asus STRIX B250F GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard Intel Core i5-7500 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor Asus STRIX GeForce GTX 970 4 GB Video Card Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 CL16 Memory EVGA 650 GQ 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

I'm not really interested in dropping $1500+ towards what would likely be an entirely new build, but I wouldn't mind spending upwards of $900, maaybe a grand in a few new components to try to bring this box closer to 2024. How likely is this, or is it time to move on?

I like to play most modern games (BG3, Diablo IV, Elden Ring), I don't really play the competitive multiplayer games like Warzone, Fort, Apex, or anything like that. As much as I would like to actually play my games on my TV, there's a good chance I'll be streaming from my PC to Steam Deck so 4K isn't really a must though I'd like something that could potentially push 4K if I'm switching over to my TV.

Thank-you to anyone who takes the time to read this and reply.

gaming pc ~$1600

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.

playing some newer video games. things like atomic heart, warno, and pref. on high graphics.

2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?

around $1600 but i could go up to $1700.

3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

a week or two from today sounds about right. very soon, in general.

4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

probably an operating system. tower as well, don't have one on hand.

5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.

logitech g213 keyboard, logitech g600 mouse. mouse is old and probably will go soon. and i use a MSI G27C6 monitor. no actual pc components being reused.

6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?

i really doubt i will be overclocking it.

7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

i mean, SSD, WiFi, and a relatively large amount of storage is all preferred (2tb?). generally, i would also like to stay away from used components.

8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

mid or full tower size preferred. windows/leds not required. if possible, all with a theme preference of black.

9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.

yes. i dont believe my institution offers free licenses for windows.

10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?

i am entirely unsure at the moment. the ability to upgrade would be nice, but it isn't central to any sort of plan or anything.

11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)

typically i am a simple man and go intel/nvidia, but really whatever is a better deal works.

12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.

it is an ancient prebuilt that i will be gifting to someone instead.

Gaming PC around $1500

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.

Looking for a pc to run some modern games (baldurs gate, elden ring, alan wake 2 etc) and some competitive shooters( Apex, valorant etc). Hoping to get 1440p. Framerate on cinematic games above 60. Doesn't have to be highest settings. Aiming for 144 fps on more competitive games.

2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?

$1500 but willing to push up to $1650ish if the benefits are worth spending a bit of extra cash

3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

ASAP

4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

Just the tower

5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.

no parts being reused

6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?

no

7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

wifi and bluetooth. 1tb storage is enough, will probably upgrade later when needed.

8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

no

9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.

no

10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?

potentially, but multiple years away. want to last awhile.

11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)

Whatever gives best bang for buck

New PC Build Help For Beginner

This is my first time I'm building a PC, and my goal is to have it be able to play games at medium-low settings at 60fps1080p in general and to run Monster Hunter Wilds (so anywhere between RE4Remake and Dragon's Dogma 2 in terms of performance) specifically. I'd also like to have wifi and bluetooth on the PC as well.

My budget is 1000CAD/750USD and my part lists is as follow: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/2yNkh3 . As of now I have bought the 6600XT for 280CAD/200USB and the 5600 for 150CAD/110USD

I have a couple of questions regarding this build in particular:

  1. How does this build look in general and is there anything I should be wary of as a first timer?
  2. Is there any parts that I could cheap out on and buy a cheaper or secondhand part
  3. Should I get an ATX motherboard and case instead of mATX for ease of build as a first timer?
  4. What is the best way to tell if the build would fit in the case as I'm given some physical constraint warnings on the part picker

Thank you very much for your help

X570 tomahawk max wifi - RAM slot 3 and 4 do not work

now before you say "bent pins", i can assure you it's not bent pins, i read countless threads online talking about it, but thats not it.

so this is the series of events that happened that led me up to this point.

-existing build that worked before this incident, 5600, 1660 super, 2x16gb, and a bunch of ssd and hdds (not super relevant).

-i wanted to switch to 4070 super, so i bought one. and i also bought an extra set of 2x16 last year that i didnt put in at the time cuz i was lazy and i didnt need it, it was more for future proof for a few yrs down the line in case i will need it, but now with the new gpu, i figure why not just put it in at the same time.

-so i put in the gpu and the new ram, power wouldnt turn on.

-eventually realized i was not using the OEM psu cables that came with it

-swapped in the OEM cables, i was getting power, but system wasnt posting, there was no video output. the ez debug LED for cpu has constant white light on

-realized that i forgot to plug in the cpu power cable at the motherboard end when i took it out to compare and confirm what the OEM power cables look like.

-plug it back in, still same thing, has power, not posting, cpu white light, etc.

-swapped out to an old gpu, and pulled out the new ram sticks, (basically went back to the original build), still not posting.

-i was afraid the wrong power cable fried the cpu, so i took out the old cpu (which hasnt even been touched, up until this point), bought a new one and put it in

-still the same thing, at this point i was thinking maybe the wrong psu cables fried the board, but all the lights were on, fans were spinning, etc. so it didnt look like it

-googled some threads on reddit, found one talking about flashing bios, which i already did when i originally switched from 3600 to 5600, and in hindsight, i dont think i needed to do that this time, but anyway, i still did, and after it was done, still not posting

-then in that thread, i saw some one talk about even tho the light is for cpu, it could be ram issue, so i took out the ram in 4th slot, left only 1 in 2nd slot, and bam, system was posting

-then after some trial and error and elimination, i have narrowed down the cause to ram slot 3 and 4. because every single ram stick was posting just fine in 2nd slot, but as soon as i put in one in slot 3 or 4, just by themselves, it was back to the old problem of constant cpu light and not posting.

so now my question is, if i know its not due to cpu bent pins, what else could it be? could it have been the wrong psu cables somehow frying JUST the circuit for slot 3 and 4? that doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me, but thats the only mistake i made in this whole process. i cant logically figure out what else it could be?

what's a good chair that is comfy for long periods, but also comfy like a recliner where it's cushy and big enough that you can sit in weird positions, sit cross legged on it, etc?

Best AM5 Motherboard in mATX Form Factor?

I recently built an Intel 14700K. While it was initially stable, and I kept the BIOS updated through x0125 and x0129, it's now unstable and regularly crashing software and BSODing. I'm therefore rebuilding this system with a 7800X3D that I have on hand from a previous sale.

This was a small form factor build, with a focus on white components.

I'd welcome any guidance you might have on good AM5 boards in the mATX form factor. I can't seem to find any options in white that don't sacrifice useability or board quality. I really liked the Gigabyte Z790M Aorus Elite AX Ice that went into my previous Intel build, so I'm leaning toward a Gigabyte B650M AORUS ELITE AX. A secondary choice is the MSI MAG B650M MORTAR WIFI.

Any tips or guidance you can provide, BAPC Canada?

Looking for a monitor 1080p 120 Hz+ on HDMI

So I found out that my Asus VG248 24" monitor only does 60 Hz on HDMI and will only run at 144 Hz on DisplayPort.

I'm rather irked by that, so does anyone have any suggestions for a non curved 1080p monitor (24 or 27 inch doesn't matter) that specifically accepts 120+ Hz on the HDMI port?
