Rules

  1. Be respectful. Please refrain from personal attacks and posting anything racist (this includes images) or prejudicial (incest jokes are old and unfunny).

  2. All submissions should be directly related to Alabama.

  3. Blanket insults and attacks on Alabama and its citizens based on stereotypes and caricatures is not allowed. This does not preclude criticism--even fierce criticism--of the state, its people, and its policies; only that which is blatantly insulting and caricatures the state in an effort to gin up outrage and lulz.

  4. Not Safe For Work content is not allowed on r/alabama. This includes graphic images or descriptions of violence, sexual content, and nudity. Exceptions include: images/videos of an Alabama disaster, like tornado footage; and newsworthy footage/images of violence that are marked NSFW and censored if possible.

  5. Limit re-posting. Posting differing views of a topic is fine. If a submission is too similar to another existing thread, it may be removed. Those types of posts should be made as comments to the existing thread.

  6. Direct solicitation is not allowed. This includes political solicitation (donate to my campaign!) and economic solicitation (come to my restaurant for 50% off!). Exceptions include information about a local event like a music festival, personal blogs that do not solicit products or services, and advertisement of petitions for Alabama-specific issues.

  7. Editorializing linked post titles is not allowed. When linking to articles from outside reddit, try to keep post titles as close as possible to the original source. Adding detail or context is allowed, as long as it does not fundamental change the original title or adds opinion or commentary not intended by the author. Do not post links to articles as a text post without additional commentary or context.

  8. No false or misleading information. Categorically false or misleading information is not allowed. This is not to limit discussion on things that may be uncertain, but rather to prevent the propagation of demonstrably untrue information from bad-faith actors.

Ad Valorem tax question

Hello all,

Just moved here and have never dealt with Ad Valorem tax on vehicles and need some help understanding how it works.

I have a vehicle that is around 11 years old with a current KBB value of around 8k. How would I calculate the tax? I just want to make sure I have enough when I get my new tags.

Thanks!

Satellite Reentry?

Did anyone just see a long track slow moving object move across the sky in central Alabama? It had a fuzzy bright white light and before it disappeared it looked like it ejected a coma of white dust/smoke almost like hitting the atmosphere. Thought it was a plane or helicopter but didn’t have position/anti collision lights

Considering Troy, Al

Thinking about retiring from rural southwest Ohio to southern Al or Ga.

Is the Troy, Al area pretty quiet? How are the gnats, flies in the summer?

Any insights god or bad appreciated

I'm going to visit family near Dothan, Anyone know of awesome places to eat or activities to do, looking for stuff within 2 hrs, but will drive 3 if its worth it in the area.

As the title says, visiting some family but we will have a lot of our own free time while there. They are not from that area themselves, so they don't know the area much as they recently arrived. My family will have kids under 9 with us, thanks for any advice!

Relocating With Family

Hello, I'm wondering if any of you can help me with some town recommendations. I have a young and growing family. We are outdoorsy. I'd like to stay working a career in the golf industry. We want a smallish town and to be able to meet other young families. Thanks in advance!

Auto tags went up

While we got a 1% decrease in food sales tax, auto taxes and fees have increased. The tag fee went up $5 for each tag. While tax on my 1986 car and 2019 hybrid went down slightly, tax on the 2022 hybrid went up 48%.

Be prepared, you may pay more tax for your "depreciating" vehicle.

Moving to the Lincoln/ Oxford region

I am being sent to Easteboga for work for the next year/ year and a half and am trying to get an idea of where to live. I am fairly keen on staying somewhere between Lincoln and Oxford/ Anniston to limit commute time. Unfortunately, I am not sure if I will be able to make a trip out there before I have to pull the trigger on a place to live.

I have found a couple nice looking places in Lincoln and am leaning more that way, but I would appreciate overall opinions of the areas. Any areas to avoid?

In the end, I am moving there either way, but hopefully I can make a more informed decision. And if you have no preferences, I would appreciate recommendations for food, bakeries, outdoor rec, etc.

Closest mosque?

Hi all! I'll be on a work trip to Selma during Ramadan and I was wondering what are the closest mosques to Selma?

Google is saying the Selma Islamic Center is permanently closed? And I'm not seeing anything else nearby?

Anyone have any leads? Thanks!

Visiting in March

Hey everyone, my family is heading down south at the end of March for spring break (myself, husband, and our 3 kids ages 6, 8, and 10). We are actually going to Atlanta, but in our quest to visit as many states as possible I’d like to make a day trip to Alabama.

What would you suggest we do? Happy to drive a few hours in one direction but ideally would like to do the whole trip in one day. The kids like being outside (the weather will probably be much better than at home in Wisconsin), we like museums, honestly we’re open to anything. Thanks!

How to check taxes without a refund

I owe taxes, that's fine. How long does alabama take to agree with me, so they don't screw up my bank account?

Why Are CSAs & Local Food Producers So Hard to Find Here?

Alright. It's February. Time to start confirming my CSA. BUT THERE ARENT ANY TO CHOOSE FROM! WHY?!

I just want consistent, local, quality produce. I had one last year that was good but I chose it last minute and would like to shop around. I found a quality greens producer that is open year round. They're awesome. I could go the farmers market route but no Farmers Market opens for months. Unless I go to Curb market down in Montgomery and I don't wanna drive there once a week for quality groceries and not be assured I'll get what I want. Any CSA recommendations for a guy in East Alabama?

I'd appreciate a more robust list of farmers too. I got some leads on a few poultry guys, some hog guys, and lamb. I'm building it out but man is it tough. For a place where the growing season is so long, I thought things would be different.

Rant over. Suggestions welcomed. I'm begging ya. Worth it to just drive to Dothan?

Befriending Alabamans

Hi! I'm a Norwegian that has always really wanted to see the deep south. It feels like the most American America. The hospitality, the gospel churches, fishing, diner culture, country western bars, American football games. I want to see all of it.

Most of all, I'd love to integrate as fully as possible into a small town during my two weeks. Instead of traveling around seeing many different places on the surface. I'm traveling for the people rather than the places.

But how well do you think this would work? Is it simply not enough time? Would you say small towners are generally curious about foreigners, or do you have to "win their trust" first?

Simply put, how do I make friends in Alabama?

Question about Citrus Trees and Moving States

I am hoping to move to Alabama at some point this year, but I am currently in the market for a potted indoor lemon tree (I bake a fair amount and love plants so it seems like a perfect match) .

I did some reading that citrus can not come into AL from other states unless it is from USDA approved nurserys. Is this actually true? Sources seemed to contradict themselves.

If it is allowed, does anyone know of any USDA approved nurserys that ship, I can't seem to find any online.

If not, I'll just wait until I move to buy a local one, but I would love to get one sooner if I can actually move it with me.

Thanks for the advice!

Lost iPhone showing in Scottsboro, AL

EDIT: It is a lost and found facility. They got my phone, and are shipping it to me! It seems they receive unclaimed property from delta, southwest, JetBlue and spirit. I did contact spirit lost and found back in chicago, however they were never able to locate it (seems that they did their job poorly). Thank you all for the help!!

Long story short back in October I left an iPhone in the bathroom at the airport where I work. I came back 2 hours later and the iPhone was already turned off and gone. I tried to locate it with lost and found, TSA and airlines and no succuess. Today the location finally showed up!! 3509 S Broad St, Scottsboro AL. I looked it up and it looks like it is unclaimed baggage. Obviously it is Sunday today, so there is no way to contact them, however I have sent them an email and I massaged them on Facebook. My iPhone has been in a lost mode along with the phone number to call and a note. Also, the report has been filed with the chicago police. Unclaimed baggage claims on the web that they do secure data wipe, can they wipe everything to the point where I won't see the location anymore? Also, the phone has been marked as stolen with the police. I did so many attempts to retrieve it at the airport and it drives me nuts that it may have edded up at unclaimed baggage....
