I’m new to Ableton so bear with me, my keyboard is plugged in and working but the keys don’t give any input into ableton, I’ve tried my computer keyboard and it works fine so I’m not sure what the issue is?
Everything was working fine yesterday
Recently found out that Propellerhead’s Reason 13 is available as a plug-in for your DAW!!
I am anti-hoarding when it comes to plugs & samples in general but Reason has such incredible and meticulously crafted proprietary engines that it virtually makes so many other things obsolete.
Sign yourself up for a free trial and go crazy with it!!
For anyone unaware, Reason is a production monster - multiple samplers (granular, creative); multiple synths; multiple drum machine synths and samplers; multiple effect racks; multiple emulations of hardware;
Ironically I started my EDM journey in Reason like 14 years ago, but it held me back compositionally. Now I can use it inside of ableton? Nah yah it fundamentally changed my production habits especially with sound design.
My max devices organisation feels a bit messy . Some are put into the packs category in the browser upon installation. Some require a custom folder (I made a “Third party devices” folder in my user library” and majority of my free ones end up in user presets under audio midi etc max devices. My issue is now I have 3/4 different places these are installed and 2 different file types as well (.adv and .amxd)
If I want to view all of my devices I like that I’ve tagged under e.g instruments in my custom group tag and click “All” in the browser when searching , my issue now is that all my .adv devices are lost in the sea of max presets which I have not selected to tag, it just happened automatically.
TLDR: I can’t seem to create one place where I can browse my max devices via custom tag (midi/audio/ instrument) without ableton tagging some of the device presets under the tag
Anybody have a decent method of organising?
Thanks in advance !
So I want to set up..
A midi drum kit that has each drum wired up to move the sequence forward one step on different instruments.
I've worked out how to do this on a couple of synths with built in sequencers, but is there a way to set this up to control instruments without built in sequencers?
I've tried a few M4L sequencers, but I can't work out how to set them to be moved forward by midi drums.
Hello wonderful community,
I’m here to seek guidance on building my first PC, I am looking forward to you providing your valuable knowledge and expertise.
Quick background: I had a budget of $8k to buy a spec’d out M4 Max MacBook Pro. Why Apple? I heard about it being able to deliver PC speeds and ARM superiority, so if I can afford the luxury of a “portable PC”, great! That was until I did some digging and came to conclusion that it’s more sensible to take the custom PC build route, and get same performance for fraction of the price. I understand that majority in music world are afraid and overwhelmed with the complications involved with music on PC and rather spend on a Mac knowing nothing can go wrong and not know about the existence of “system drivers”.. I think that is not a barrier for me and especially with your help this will be relatively straight forward.
Sorry if above was unnecessary, now for what’s relevant:
I want to build a PC, I have not done it before. As mentioned before I have about $8k to spend. This PC is solely for music production and no gaming. I want to buy the most powerful PC that will give me the best experience with music creation. What do I mean by music creation? I am using 50-100 tracks, most will have cpu intensive plugins and FX (KONTAKT, Nexus, Omnisphere, Pigments to name a few..), I want ultra low latency when recording on midi and NEVER to think about consolidation (freezing tracks), and just smooth playback.
This is what I have found, please let me know if you have something better:
CPU The new Ryzen 9 series, not sure which one, was told 9950x, please confirm if good choice. (Should I get threadripper? Was told that DAWS don’t even know how to utilize the sheer amount of power, and I will never ever need so much power.. tell me if I’m wrong)
RAM I want 128gb. I am in the dark about which company and config to get, the point is, I want the fastest in the context of loading KONTAKT libs and music prod in general.
STORAGE 8TB (option to upgrade to more, some day). Again, need guidance with which brand which specs and config (2x4tb or 1x8tb..) to achieve fastest speeds (like when loading orchestra libraries…), I understand internal SSD will be the fastest.
MOTHERBOARD I am in the void with what to choose, not sure what to even ask.. want brand with best track record and reliability. Which boards do you guys use?
COOLING Again, this PC is solely for music, I don’t want to hear any noise coming from the PC (!!), if I need to spend $1k to achieve that, I don’t care.. tell me what to buy and I buy.
GRAPHICS CARD No gaming, best bank for buck under $500, maybe will upgrade someday RTX 4090
POWER Not sure what I need, safe and reliable I guess is the key.
TOWER I have a friend that will assemble the PC, I guess the most important thing I am looking for is that it will eliminate any noise coming from within, so I can have a virtually silent PC.
Mendel, Thanks for your time!
Today I got my Ableton Move and it was love at first sight. Now I want to have it always with me. Is there any plan to create an official bag from Ableton? I've seen DeckSaver is working on a cover but the Move is something that you can actually bring with you so a bag or a padded protection could be great. Do you have any information if Ableton is working on something like this?
As per the Subject line, I'd like to make a Control Surface Script in Ableton Live Suite 12 Beta, but it would appear to be impossible, at least following Ableton's own How To page
I'm on Ableton Live Suite 12.1.5b3 (Win 10). in File explorer, I have "Hidden files and folders" radio buttoned to "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" under the View tab in Folder Options via "Options>Change folder and search options"
According to the Ableton page re: Creating your own Control Surface script, there should be a file called UserConfiguration.txt in path = C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live x.x.x\Preferences\User Remote Scripts
That's true for C:\Users\Home\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live 12.1b14\Preferences\User Remote Scripts. But no such "User Remote Scripts" subfolder appears for C:\Users\Home\AppData\Roaming\Ableton Live 12 Beta.exe. Indeed, the only subfolder there is one called EBWebView. (Opening that subfolder does indeed reveal a further bunch of subfolders, many of which contain further subfolders. I've gone through each & every oe of them & didn't see any files named "UserConfiguration.txt" nor any folders named "User Remote Scripts")
So what gives? Am I to understand that it's just not possible to write a Control Surface Script in Ableton Live 12 Suite Beta?
I just want to be able to run the '.alp' and let Ableton install the MIDI tools for me.
Hi there. I've recorded some music on the trial version of ableton and I was wondering what happens to the tracks that I've recorded? Will they automatically be on the purchased version or I should I save them on an external hard drive?
Also will the settings be the same? I've connected a midi keyboard and audio interface. Will they automatically re-connect?
Thanks!
I want the default Warp mode to be Complex instead of Beats.
The manual says you can’t “capture automation” using the Move as a control surface.
Does that mean if you’re recording into a clip with automation recording on, turning encoders that control a device won’t record those parameter adjustments?
Would love to do this to tidy up. I would prefer not to do it manually though, as the Drum Rack has a lot of sounds.
Hi everyone,
I just got a M Audio Code 49 midi keyboard for a bargain and I have been having some issues running it with Ableton to control external devices.
I am certain my midi routing is correct as I have used other midi keyboard to do this in the past.
The issue occurs only when I assign the control surface as “Code Series” (which it defaults to when code 49 is plugged in via USB) or “Mackie Control” (which the keyboard manual says to select if I want to use transport buttons on the keyboard).
What happens is some kind of midi panic where, depending on which of the control surfaces I choose, a very high pitch or low pitch midi note gets sent to my external devices. It also seems to mess around with the devices’ settings such as filter, octaves, etc. on one device it said that the midi signals being sent were all clock midi when in fact they were midi cc.
All of these issues disappear if I choose the control surface as “none” but then the keyboard is just a keyboard with no transport key or pad functionality. I know I could map these features manually but I am curious if anyone has any idea what I could try to fix this issue and use the control surfaces as intended.
I have added a screenshot of my midi preferences. This is the settings that work and allow the controller to just be a keyboard. The controller name is greyed out because i did not have it plugged in when I took the screenshot. Us-16x08 is my tascam audio interface. I use it to output midi to a thru box that manages multiple midi devices.
Thanks all!
Hi there everybody!
I recently decided that I am a bit fed up with FL Studio's clunkiness and am looking for a better alternative. I have downloaded a free trial of Ableton and I like a lot of what I am seeing so far but would like to try and replicate some of the presets I had made for different functions in FL Studio.
The one I used most and I am most struggling to replicate is a multiband sidechaining tool.
Basically I had created a project template which loaded up with 2 tracks for different kicks, which then got split up into highs mids and lows and sent to another track called "kick - " and then highs, mids or lows. These had a plugin called fruity peak controller which basically converted the noise into a peak signal. So the signal for the lows would be a larger number than the signal for the highs usually because the bass of a kick is louder.
The other half of what I made could be dropped onto any track as an effect and inside there, it would split that sound up into highs, mids and lows and then sidechain the individual frequency range to the same frequency range of the kick.
In essence what this meant is that I could drop volume of the rest of the track for the duration of the kick by only exactly how much it needed for each frequency range which allowed the kick to punch through but not overpower everything else.
Now I see that in Ableton I can split up the frequencies with a group and three instances of "EQ Three" on a track. So in theory I could sidechain the individual frequencies, but where I am stumped is that I then go to select the sidechain input and the only option I have from the kick is the overall kick, which doesnt achieve the result I am after.
If there is any long time ableton users who can help I would be very appreciative!
Thank you.

I made a post about upgrading to Transit 2.
My biggest reason for using Transit (which I think is great ) was to Macro varioius FX rather than having a static FX rack.
After trying to do this I could never get the Macro working how I wanted it.
This tutorial shows you how to use Shapers and Envelope followers and also sidechaining to recreate Transit.
Obviously it takes a bit more time to set up with some experimentation to get right but it works pretty well.
There are advantages to both the plug in and a stock rack. Your stock parameters need to be a bit more defined and knowing where you are heading its a bit of a must.
Transit has a lot of presets for a quick run through which is great for quick creativity its also way less setting up but if you want to push things maybe an Ableton FX uniy with macro groups might be the way to go.
A one knob Macro is great but Ableton can do this using Shaper and creating Macro groups.
For me Transit is too handy but creating some good Max 4 live devices and presets might be of value so I've posted the link to
So yeah Check this out.
Also I had a look at Snapback but the stuff it does is really easy to do using simpler and way more flexible than the plugin.
I just got into the mac ecosystem a few weeks ago ,bought a macbook pro M3 pro ,32 gigs ram and 1tb storage, I wanted to know if it's worth upgrading from Sonoma to Sequoia, are there any slowdowns ?,also I mainly use logic and Ableton!, thanks for help in advance!!!
Any recommendations for VST plugins with a bit of cut to them? I'm working on a synthpunk project, similar to The Screamers. Looking for a very sharp, somewhat brittle synth plugin to tinker with to make it work. Need it to be free right now. Any advice for making this tone would be welcome as well.
I’m noticing some sudden sharp peaks on my oscilloscope on the master, it happens when my shake and my synths are playing together
So far I’ve taken care of some transients in the synths and clipped them individually, I’ve then grouped them together and clipped the synth buss
I’ve clipped the shaker in the drum buss
I want to clip the drum buss and the synth buss instead of just clipping the master (I don’t want to clip too much of the master) but if I sum 2 of them together the synth buss will get all the drum busses processing which I don’t want
Is there any ways your can think to work around this?
Hey, as title suggests - after the latest update, when working on certain projects my PC will randomly go to a blank black screen, the power stays on but nothing brings back the picture besides pressing the hard reboot button on the case.
I tend to run pretty demanding projects which can go over 100 MIDI/audio channels with my CPU pushing 70-80% load so I thought it was a water pump/PSU issue where the pc was shutting down at high temp but I can play demanding games (RDR2, BG3, cities skylines etc) on high for hours without anything like this happening. I checked this by having HWinfo open on a 2nd monitor and letting the project play, CPU temp didn't go above 70 but the shutdown still occured.
Has anyone come across a similar issue and can help? PC specs are 5950x, 32gb ram, 4060 on a b450 tomahawk. Storage wise I have Windows 10 on a 2tb NVME drive and 2 more SSDs and a 7200rpm SATA drive. I can run different projects with the same VSTs with no issue. Please help meeeeeeeee
Hey everyone! Brand new to digital recording and have a question. I’m using an Arturia MiniLab 3 and Ableton Live Lite. When I throw in a midi track and hit record, I get a 1 bar count ins. When I add in a second midi track and hit record, I get no count in: this just started out of nowhere and I’m sure it’s some key my fat fingers hit. Any help appreciated!
I’m working on a live electronic music duo where I handle guitar and MIDI keyboard, also using a pedalboard to loop, switch effects, and trigger different tracks, while my partner sings and plays a midi keyboard. We also use various backing tracks with drum machines. Our projects and performances are entirely in Ableton, and we use Arrangement View because we often rely on various automations.
Previously, we ran everything on a single MacBook M2 (guitar and mic through an audio interface, the pedalboard and both MIDI keyboards through USB), but I recently got an MacBook M1 and want to split the projects between the two so we can use them separately (we also have two audio interfaces). So I thought about routing my MacBook for my guitar, my MIDI keyboard and the pedalboard, and his MacBook for vocals, his MIDI keyboard and the backing tracks.
Is there a way to sync both projects in Arrangement View so, for example, that when I start the backing track with the pedalboard, it triggers on both computers at the same time? If this isn’t possible, how would you suggest dividing the workflow between the two computers? (like using one only for backing tracks and the other for played live instruments)
Also, how should we route the two Macbook on the mixer? A separate channel for each one from each one of our audio interfaces?
I've been using it for about half a year now and I'm still pretty happy with it. I never felt like upgrading to a paid license was worth it, since I never felt limited when working in this DAW.
I'm just wondering if there are important features that I'm missing out on, that I maybe didn't even know of as a beginner?
Hi:)
For some reason my Ableton keeps crashing my stem mixing session.
It is so frustrating because I don't know why, or why it is doing it.
I know this is a commen issues. It don't happen to me allot, but when it does it completely ruins my session.
I am writing to get tips at how I trouble shoot for finding and eliminating the issue.
Hey! While waiting for a Model: Samples, I was thinking of digging in to Stochas for some fun beat loops. I manage to connect a drum rack to it, but in the piano roll in Stochas, I see the notes, not the names of the individual sounds inside the drum rack.
Anyone has an idea how to do that, outside of manually renaming all the notes? I'm sure it can have something to do with Note Information, but not sure how.
Thanks!
Is there a way or plugin that would let activate, let's say, a gate via sidechaining but using midi notes as input instead of audio?
Hii so I've been trying to get into music for a while now and I saw a lot of people recommend ableton. Since I'm new to ableton I'd like to try it out first to see if it really is for me before spending my money on the full version..
I saw that there is a trial version but I'd rather not get attached to the suite version.
So I wanted to ask if there is any cheap midi controllers that come with a lite license? I'd prefer it to fit into my budget of <55€ (but I can go over a bit) I'd appreciate the help!
Thank you for reading! :)
Occasionally, I will be putting my Push into a backpack for gigs and would like to give it a bit of protection. Has anyone got any recommendations of a lightweight case/cover for it?
Hey everyone my motu ultralite mk3 that I just got second hand gives an exact latency of 1/16th everytime I record in whatever tempo ..
SO basicly for some reason it only starts to record after 1/16th ..
I can not find anything on this so for now I am just changing the clip of every midi I send out to my synths like in the picture but this is a very annoying workflow ..
Any one have any tips ?
