Known worldwide for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park.

Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468.4 square miles (8,983 km2). More than half of the world's remaining geysers are in Yellowstone. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is the largest remaining nearly intact ecosystem in the Earth's northern temperate zone.

mccullough peaks wild horse herd management area

A coworker mentioned this place. Sounds like it's about 2 hrs east of the park. Would be cool to see wild horses. Anyone know what this area is like? Worth a day trip if we're in YS for a week?

Possible to drive from Bozeman Airport to West Yellowstone town in winter?

I'm going to Yellowstone National Park in mid-December and am thinking of staying in West Yellowstone. I'll most likely be flying in to Bozeman International Airport then drive 1h to West Yellowstone. Are the roads open and safe for driving and is West Yellowstone a good place to stay if I want to go to Yellowstone?

I was thinking of staying in West Yellowstone as I saw that there are some tour packages for snowmobiling that will pick us up there.

Else, are there better alternatives? Thanks!

Winter Travel

Hi! Southern girl here with pretty minimal experience driving in snow. A few friends and I are planning to visit Jackson area in mid-December and are trying to make some logistics decisions. We'd like to rent a car to have some freedom to explore a little while we are out there. It seems to be much cheaper to fly into Billings or Bozeman or even SLC. Is it feasible to fly into one of these places and drive to Jackson this time of year? We don't have much of an agenda, just want to see the area.

Fishing Bridge RV Camping

Does anyone have experience for how strict they are on vehicle length? We booked a 30’ site (largest we could fine) and our RV is ~33 ft plus our tow truck. Are we going to have issues?

If you could add one animal into the Yellowstone ecosystem

As we enter the slow season for the park here’s a hypothetical for fun:

Ignoring ethics, invasive species issues, ecological collapse etc… what’s one species you would add into the GYE and why?

Personally I’m throwing chimps in. Would give anything to watch a monkey ride a bison through the Lamar valley.

In case it wasn’t clear: I do not condone bringing non-native species into the park.

First time visitors help

Starting to plan a trip for summer and we have never been there or to a nearby area. We are considering flying into Denver o SLC and driving there to spend couple of nights.i am mostly concerned on how to drive there and around and how to look for the best value experience for a 5 person family. Most likely will be there 4 nights before driving back.

Any heads up or cautionary tips and website links with recommendations is very much appreciated. Places to stay at, spots to visit and fun tips.

Lone Star geyser excursion-dragging a kid?

I'll be at YELL with some friends in January and I'm really interested in doing the 5-mile guided Lonestar excursion. I'll have my 6 yr old with me and I'm concerned he can't keep up with the group. Has anyone done this tour with a small kid? Does the old Faithful ski shop rent sleds that we could pull him on if he gets tired? Thanks in advance!

Tourists Illegally Walk Across Delicate Thermal Feature To Approach Bison @ Yellowstone National Park

The people in this pic had walked through one of Yellowstone’s sensitive thermal features to approach these bison, coming within a dangerously close distance. Bison, like any other animal inside Yellowstone, should be given plenty of space. This means at least 25 yards or 75 feet. If a bison approaches you, you should back away.

Yellowstone trip April 2025

Hi all,

We our planning our honeymoon for April 2025 - we're doing a mini trip across the states to see some of the nation parks and cities we've always wanted to go to, Yellowstone is definitely up there!

I know a fair few people have said April is an awful time to go as there's lots of road closures, bad weather etc... but unfortunately April next year is the only date we have free to go before we start a family / work gets busy etc...

At the moment, our itinerary would get us to Yellowstone on the 24th April 2025 - looking at the NPS website, this year the west entrance opened April 19th which also leads down to Old Faithful.

Is this still worth a visit? We don't mind the cold and can dress up warm. We'd love to walk around Old Faithful, Morning Glory Pool, Grand Prismatic overlook and the rest of the sights along that 191 road. I know we wouldn't get the FULL Yellowstone experience, but I'm hoping it's still worth visiting regardless.

We would fly into Bozeman and stay in West Yellowstone in an airbnb / hotel. Our other option would be to fly into SLC and drive up?

P.S... can we swim anywhere in Yellowstone?

Thanks :)

9 people coming to Yellowstone in June 2025, no previous Yellowstone experience. 3 nights with the below itinerary. Is this doable?

We’d like to hit the Lamar Valley, Artist Point in Canyon Village, Yellowstone Lake, Old Faithful, various basins on the west side, Grand Prismatic Springs etc

2025 Trip- looking for recommendations, advice, some answers

I’ve always wanted to see Yellowstone and Glacier National Park in Wyoming. And recently, I’ve been wanting to get into fishing. I’m planning three days in Yellowstone, three days in Glacier sometime in July. Basically what I’m looking for is some recommendations on activities I want to do. Definitely want to do some kind of “safari” tour through Yellowstone. I absolutely love animals so getting to see some (especially that white bison) is really a must. Additionally, I want to go fishing. I’m a beginning angler and will be going with my younger sister (we are 28 and 21 at the time of the trip).

Any suggested drive-through tours, areas to go fishing, other things to do in the area? I’m not physically fit but I hope to make some progress on that before the trip.

If there somewhere I can rent fishing rods and buy Yellowstone-approved tackle? I know there are some pretty strict regulations on the kind of tackle you can use. I just want to avoid having to fly with fishing rods.

Any recommended towns/areas for Airbnbs/VRBO? (We aren’t the camping type)

Special sightseeing opportunities or activities you can’t get anywhere else?

Unique places to go shopping?

2 person cabins for a family?

Kind of a weird question but I'm looking at booking a Yellowstone trip for our family of 4 for July of 2025. I thought I may be too late to book lodging inside the park so I do have some options for West Yellowstone but I noticed there are still 2 person cabins available at the Lake Lodge and Roosevelt Lodge for our dates. We camp a lot and have portable bunk beds for the two small kids (kid-o-bunks) so I'm wondering if we can just book a 2 person cabin and use the bunks for the kids. Does anyone know if the lodges are strict about only 2 people being allowed in a 2 person cabin?
