Prince Edward County, ON 🇨🇦
An ideal place for introverts to relax on the edge of the earth. Kola Peninsula.
This was at the end of October last year, at the Tent Horseshoe Hike in Kananaskis, near Calgary. It was the first big snowfall of the season and I had the place to myself all day. Driving back two hours, in the dark after it had snowed all day, was terrifying though lol

Back in the olden times, winter in Greenland absolutely meant tons of frozen sea ice creating a space for winter activities and travel. With climate change, sea ice is not forming like it used to if at all. Ilulissat is considered north Greenland but it doesn’t get much sea ice at all anymore. You have to go to the remote parts to access it, which is considerably more treacherous and expensive to get to. You often get open water in the dead of winter, which is unfathomable by youngish elders.
Greenland’s indigenous people and others who live there are learning and adapting to this new reality but it’s hard. The traditions about how to thrive in hostile conditions have developed over thousands of years of experience surviving a land that is frozen and non-arable with apex predators like polar bears always threatening the peace.
Ilulissat means iceberg and many places are given names based on their geographical characteristics. The town is home to the nearby Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO world heritage site because of the colossal icebergs its glacier produces on a regular basis. It’s even suspected that the iceberg that sank the titanic came from this glacier. I have witnessed more than I can count and each iceberg has a story and unique expression that you can only really appreciate in person.
It is a fascinating place and Ilulissat Greenland will get easier to visit from 2025 Summer onward with flights from North America on United Airlines. Join us at r/greenlandtravel for more info about Greenland
When I went here a few years ago by boat, I couldn’t believe that anyone lived there. The harbor was so small and empty that it looked like a ghost town. With a new airport coming to the nearby city of Qaqortoq later this decade, I think quaint little Narsaq might get more visitors. Join us in r/greenlandtravel
Normally, we see this image in the summer time without the snow. This is the first time I’ve seen it with the snow on the roof.
The new airport at Nuuk just opened a little over a week ago. In summer 2025 it will get easier to visit one of the smallest capitals in the world from North America. Presently, you have to go to Denmark to get Greenland or Iceland sometimes - less frequent departures that are much more expensive.
Nuuk is more like a Danish town than a Greenlandic town though so you’ll want to start there but visit other places like Ilulissat to see the nature in Greenland that’s so stunning including massive icebergs. On Reddit we have info at r/greenlandtravel
Nuuk is the smallest capital in the world. Due to Denmark’s status as the administering country over Greenland, Nuuk is not officially recognized as a true capital.
Greenlanders consider it the capital though.
This used to be the only traffic light in the entire country but now there are two more also in Nuuk.
Nuuk just got a new airport ten days ago on 28 November. Previously it could only accept small planes like a Dash-8 that seats 42 passengers. Now they can accept an Airbus A330 or Boeing 737 with 300+ passengers. It’s a huge change.
International flights will open up next year starting in June. Visit us on Reddit r/greenlandtravel for more
