Update: How to get off the railing

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement I received on my last post! I went out and practiced again today, keeping in mind as much advice as I could. I raised my seat, which helped a ton, but I still need to trust the uni with my weight more. I practiced pushing off the railing into the open space and was able to get a rep out before I fell. I was also able to offshoot from the rail at various angles. Letting the unicycle take me where it wanted and not being afraid of the S motion helped a lot, too. Unfortunately, my best attempts where I was able to get 3 reps by shooting off the railing at an angle and 2 reps pushing off weren't caught on camera, but I was still able to catch 1-2 unassisted reps! Thanks a ton!

How to get off the railing

I've been practicing unicycling for about 5 days now for a combined total of about 4 hours. I'm trying to focus on keeping my posture and work up to unassisted revs. I'm looking for tips on how to improve my stability while riding as well as any other critiques or tips that might come to mind.

Question on seat height

New unicyclist, longtime bicyclist. Most of the descriptions for seat height I’ve seen allude to references to belly button and vague references of “almost straight legs,” but I’m relatively tall (6’1ish) but have shorter legs. While learning, I’ve found it seems to tire me more on longer distances than perhaps it should, how many inches between crotch and seat should I have if legs are fully extended and standing at 9 and 3? I’m male and my inseam is 32”, on a 20” Sun Extreme.

First tricks

I've been riding a unicycle on and off for probably about 10 years now. I can free mount and idle, but never really put much time into learning anything else. I want to get better at it, any suggestions for first tricks I should try? Any advice/tips would also be massively appreciated. (Sorry, if this kind of thing has been asked a lot before). Thanks!

Rim Advice

Are mountain bike and unicycle rims fundamentally different in any way? I don't imagine the stresses are terribly different in magnitude or direction; as long as I match my spoke count I should be fine with just about anything, right? Thinking of building up a 27.5 or 29 soon. I just don't want to spend money on a dt swiss rim and blow it up.

Has anyone ever MUni in the snow?

I'm just curious as I don't love hot temps so most of the outdoors stuff I do is in the winter. Its more convenient that way also less people out hiking on the trails, no mosquitos to bite and bother me, I don't have to worry about snakes its great. I would like to add winter MUni ing to my list of pass times. Any pointer?

Rode 30km on my old 20" uni yesterday!

https://preview.redd.it/u0336c1wtjwd1.jpg?width=764&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d5728e7a9d86d169cb6707505f00491d57fb77a

I've wanted to do something like this for years and impulsively planned a two-days trip this week. Had to shorten it to only one day because the pain i felt this morning waking up in my tent was just too much to bear and I couldn't even mount oops

I made lots of mistakes, like thinking google maps wouldn't make me go through steep muddy hiking paths in the woods, bringing a speaker that I didn't use once (I had my headphones), and thinking I'd be able to ride 60km in two days with no training and not being an athletic person in general. Lessons learned!

Can't wait to be able to sit without pain again so I can go back and finish what I've started >:)

Suggestions for starter

I’m looking at buying my first unicycle to learn on. Not completely sure where to start and if it matters I’m just under 230lbs. I’ve seen some that have limits of 200. Any would be welcomed.

designing a unicycle from the ground up because I hate myself - Update

I made a post a while back reaching out to look for industry standards. I've just about finished a draft design for a freecoaster hub shell designed around a sprag clutch, and I'm due to start working on the drive layout.

I'm making this post in the hopes that people know where, or can direct me to people who know where I can get driveshafts for my project. I'm looking to handle maybe 200nm of torque or 300 to be safe, and have a travel of around 140mm

Kind've new to unicycling

So a decade ago I bought a new Torker CX Unistar Unicycle (24") to learn how to ride, off Amazon. After not getting very far (and life getting in the way), the unicycle went in the garage....

Fast forward to now.

Last weekend, I picked up a LeRun, a skatebike that is single wheeled, but has a skateboard truck in the front. I got it for $25 at a flea market. The truck bearings were REALLY bad, so today I made a special trip to a skateboard store an hour away from me as I know nothing about skateboards stuff.

He got my LeRun running, but offered to sell me a unicycle as I mentioned I dabbled in that in my past. He sold it to me for $20. I wasn't gonna say no when I saw it. It says inside the fork Koxx One Unicycles with Black Diamond on the other side.

I really don't know what I have.

I want to get back on the ball of learning how to unicycle. So any advice would be helpful.

I don't know if this the right size for me (5' 7", 30" inseam). Tire says "Bike Trial" 20 x 2.5.

The unicycle looks near new, but the pedals can pull away from the tire 1/4-1/2" by eye. Not sure if this is normal for a unicycle as my Torker is rigid, and I know I can't compare unicycles to my bicycle knowledge to a degree (I am a touring bagger). I still have my Torker, so if this new one isn't very good for me, I can still get on a wheel.

On the hunt for the legal definition of “unicycle”

I’ve looked nearly everywhere and in all of the best places for how Colorados legally defines a unicycle and if it is also defined as a vehicle.

I’m looking forward to riding at night but I don’t know if I need to attach lights/reflectors to my unicycle lol.

Journalist looking to speak to people who commute on a unicycle

Hello, I'm a journalist writing a piece for The Observer Magazine (part of The Guardian) about people who commute to work on a unicycle. I wondered if anyone here does this? If so, I'd love to chat - feel free to drop me a line and I can explain more: isabellearonfreelance@gmail.com

Custom Trials build

I am putting together a custom Trials Unicycle.

Purple is my favorite color, so part of it is that.

Having issues finding 19 in. x 35mm rim tape in purple. My rim has large cutouts in it to save weight, so whatever I use needs to be mildly substantial.

Are there any alternative materials I can make rim tape out of, seeing as purple rim tape is not for sale anywhere?

designing a unicycle from the ground up because I hate myself - industry and de facto standards?

embarking on the horrible path of building something from the very bottom, because I'm trying to incorporate suspension (not just the seat, the pedals too).

I'll most likely be designing a hub in addition to the frame, and I couldn't find any comprehensive resources on the standards used. I'm aware ISIS has become the standard for axles, but what width accommodates the 125mm standard spacing best? what is the standard for width and OD on bearings? what's the offset standard for brake mounts and rotors? how are the forks constrained on more complicated unis? I have very little idea of what I'm doing

Also if anyone has a better idea than a splined telescoping driveshaft for how to allow the pedals vertical movement LMK, I'm also considering a two-chain half-scissor-lift-type thing (so the chain length remains constant), but I don't like the space it takes or the backlash. aspiring to like 100+ mm of travel

Operation Ghost Riders

Seeing as I will be 18 tomorrow I have realized the Halloween is kind of boring when no one shows up for candy and you aren’t allowed to go trick or treating anymore. Therefore I propose “Operation Ghost Riders.” We all dress up and grab our unicycles, but instead of trick or treating or waiting for people to knock or ring, we go out with a bag of candy door to door giving out candy

This unicycle is for sale near me and I am interested but I can't figure out which model it is. Does anyone know what it might be? Thanks!
