Double Feature: Valhalla Rising & The Northman

Visceral Viking Violence

So this was an really an accidental double feature. I've had both these in my watch list for a long time but while I was doped up on Flu meds and stuck at home I finally got around to watching Valhalla Rising which immediately reminded me I had to watch 'The Northman'.

The tones are a little different, Valhalla is a much slower film with burst of action, while Northman is a more epic tale of revenge but both are pretty trippy, primal, hypermasculine (Not TOXIC) stories.

The cinematography in each is amazing and I partly became homesick for Scotland when I could almost smell the wet grass of the highlands. Both have very distinctive scores as well. Ultimately these are what cinema is all about, they are visual movies that don't rely purely on exposition but also don't descend into eye noise.

Double Feature [Weird Tales Pulp Action] Raiders of the Lost Ark & Conan the Barbarian

At face value these two films may seem to have little in common other than being awesome early 80s genre movies but as an avid reader of Robert E. Howard [Creator of Conan] I find these two to be the best examples of Weird Tales fiction.

You could really imagine Indiana Jones being a story in the old pulp magazine, just a page after Conan.

Both films also take themselves fairly seriously but still have room for humour. Although never tongue in cheek or the over used meta of today's genre films.

Also both Conan and Indy have a thing about snakes...
