“Another poll released this week by a different Democratic firm found, however, that hardly any voters were motivated by opposition to transgender surgeries or what Republicans derisively call ‘boys in girls sports.’


“The conflicting surveys, with clashing but not totally contradictory findings, illustrate the tricky post-election analysis Democrats will need to conduct as they chart a course out of the political wilderness.”

“In a Wednesday memo, the Democratic firm GQR cautioned against scapegoating trans issues for the election outcome, citing polling from the week leading up the election, which found nearly two-thirds of voters saw Trump’s trans ads.

“’And yet, when asked their most important issues in this election, just 4 percent — dead last on this list — identify opposing transgender surgeries and transgender kids in sports as something that drove their vote,’ the firm said in its analysis.”

“The transgender rights case, United States v. Skrmetti, No. 23-477, is a challenge brought by the Biden administration to a Tennessee law that bans some medical treatments for transgender minors. It is scheduled to be argued [on  December 4].

“Although the law was also challenged in a separate lawsuit by families and a doctor, the justices granted only the Biden administration’s petition seeking review. The Trump administration will almost surely reverse course, and the court will sooner or later have to make adjustments if it is to decide the constitutionality of the law.

“There are several possible procedural permutations. They are looking for reasons to be optimistic, such as Sarah McBride’s election in Delaware, which will make her the first out transgender member of Congress. “Two House Democrats said they oppose transgender athletes competing in women’s sports in the immediate aftermath of President-elect Trump’s decisive victory over Vice President Harris, shifting right of their previous policy positions and deepening fractures within a bruised Democratic Party.”

“Among the campaign’s most effective 30-second spots was an ad featuring the on-air comments of ‘The Breakfast Club’ host Charlamagne tha God, which shifted the race 2.7 percentage points in Trump’s favor, The New York Times reported Thursday, citing an analysis by Future Forward, a super PAC supporting Harris. 

“Harris struggled to combat Trump’s attacks, skirting direct questions about transgender rights in interviews to the chagrin of some Democrats. 

“’The Democrats have to stop pandering to the far left,’ Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) told The New York Times on Wednesday. ‘I don’t want to discriminate against anybody, but I don’t think biological boys should be playing in girls’ sports.’

“’Democrats aren’t saying that, and they should be,’ said Suozzi, who narrowly won reelection Tuesday.”

“Suozzi had already exited Congress [in 2022] when a proposal to ban transgender women and girls from female school sports teams made its way to the House floor, where it ultimately passed along party lines. 

“Suozzi’s office did not respond to emailed questions about whether Suozzi would have supported that bill or whether he would support similar legislation in the next Congress.”

“’We want to reassure our LGBTQ+ students that we as district leaders will always celebrate your identities, support your dreams and aspirations, and applaud your accomplishments,’ the committee wrote in an email to families Friday, co-signed by Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo.

“The statement comes after Moulton was interviewed this week for a story about who Democrats blame for Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat on Tuesday. Moulton, a Salem Democrat, said identity politics hurt the party, and suggested Democrats shift their approach.

“’Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face,’ Moulton told the Times. ‘I have two little girls, I don’t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat, I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.’
