In defence of KTSA

I've seen too many people say this album is crap or a disaster or something along those lines. Let's go through song-by-song.

Title track
Not too great tbh, I'm not going to die on this hill. Things improve from here. Having said that, this song is fine to listen to and the backing vocals at the end are pretty catchy.
6.5/10

Darlin'
A beautiful song, great Carl vocal, nice chords, inventive touches and quirky bridge, what's not to like?
9/10

Some of Your Love
Similar to the title track, it's not great, but it's pleasant enough and has nice catchy backing vocals. This is a bit better though. I actually do like it.
7.5/10

Livin' with a Heartache
I don't love this song, but it's really not a bad song. I just think it's too long and that riff just sounds 'smug' to me. Ridiculous, I know. But it's a fine song if we are being objective.
7.5/10

School Day
Nice a cappella intro. Great electric guitar work (especially the solos!). A fun vibe once you get into it. Just enjoy. Hail, hail rock n' roll! (Not sure if Al really convinces though).
7/10

Goin' On
I hope I don't need to convince anybody that this is pretty much a perfect song. They should have put it at the start of the album.
10/10

Sunshine
The boys finally break out the steel drums. This song sounds dumb the first time maybe, but it's fun and catchy and really not actually bad. Very nice vocal arrangement underneath it all. If I'm a little drunk I will like this song a lot more than sober.
7/10

When Girls Get Together
This song is deceptively inventive, with a quirky sense of time and instrumentation. You might not like it but it's not a bad song. As a follow-up to a fun on the beach song though, it drags.
7/10

Santa Ana Winds
This song is easy to ignore maybe, but it's very nice. Lovely vocals, and the violin/harmonica combo just works so well. The music fits the lyrics like a glove.
8.5/10

Endless Harmony
I don't usually love Bruce's stuff, but this is fantastic. Great end to the album.
9/10

Smiley Smile is NOT even the best album to "chill out"

Mind you, I can't say that I have ever listened to it on an acid comedown, but the intentional tape fucking up part in 'She's Goin' Bald" is the single scariest Beach Boy part. That alone I fear would spiral the tail end of a trip in a bad direction. No matter how phenomenal and relaxing the rest of the album is, I think that part alone would fuck me up.

And the best album I believe that should be in the curriculum as the album during a comedown, is Holland. No questions please, it should be fairly obvious.

Edit: Talking about the quote on the Wikipedia page of Smiley Smile.

2nd Edit:

Sorry guys, apparently someone had the exact same thought a day earlier. Never thought this day would come lmao. Shows me for not checking the subreddit a little more before posting.

I'm just gonna come out and say it: The original 1990 cut of Sweet Insanity (the working title was actually still "Brian" at that point) is an AWESOME album.

Low woodwind in multiple songs...what is it?

There's a low double reed-sounding woodwind throughout the catalog: in the Hum De Dum section of GV; in the coda of Cabinessence; and I Know There's An Answer. It sounds like a bass sax, but reedier - such a heavy droney sound. Anyone know what it is and/or who plays it?

Pink Robert, a giant in the rock bootleg community, passed away last month. He had an enormous treasure trove of Beach Boys material, including the fabled Unsurpassed Masters series--if you're interested, you'd better download it before it's gone.

Like I said in the post title, Pink Robert was an absolute titan of classic rock bootlegs. I don't know how he amassed such an enormous collection, but he was generous enough to digitize and share everything on his website. Thousands of rare and unreleased recordings from dozens of artists including the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Mountain, Moby Grape, and more.

But since his passing, it's not known how long the file hosting site he had been using will keep his files. It seems like the new host of the website it actively looking for other solutions, but if you want to play it safe, I'd download whatever interests you now, in case you don't get the chance to again.

Why does everyone praise Smiley as a feel-good LSD comedown record?

To me it's the opposite of that, I was absolutely creeped out the first time I heard it, being familiar with the cheerful SMiLE versions of the songs, like, I was almost jumpscared by Wonderful. In contrast to SMiLE, which feels like an ascension to Heaven, Smiley feels like falling down to Earth. It's creepy, eerie, the atmosphere is somber, and when you know the context it gets even worse. Fall Breaks is also fucking creepy, She's Goin' Bald has those weird Alvin and the Chipmunks shit, Wind Chimes is eerie as hell, etc etc. Don't get me wrong, I love the album, I love the creepiness of it and the lo-fi production, but it's not something that makes me feel happy at all and I wouldn't play it on a bad trip if my life depended on it (I don't use drugs btw)

Why don’t they play heroes and villains live anymore

So this has been a question that I have had for quite a while for some insight heroes and villains is one of the most popular songs by The Beach Boys if I’m not wrong However they have not played the song live since 2017 and I wanted to know why so I decided to create this thread to hopefully get some answers. edit: hi this is future me so I have been reading some of the comments on this post and I have been seeing some not so nice things being said about Mike Love now I’m gonna say this right now if you Hate Mike love and his own incarnation of the band then I totally respect your opinion but I created this post just to get some answers on why they’re not playing heroes and villains live anymore not to argue and insult Mike Love I have already reported a certain person for calling him a faceist swear word that begins with a c and ends with a T. I’m not gonna say the word But to the person who said that word, you know who you are. anyway, I will say what I said one more time I made this post to have a friendly discussion on why they’re not playing heroes and villains anymore not to insault Mike love if you have anything mean that you would like to call him please keep it to yourself and do not put it on this post thank you.

Is “Little Pad” a song about menstruation?

Hear me out.

“If I only had a little pad in Hawaii” sounds like a woeful woman who got her period out of the blue. Was it actually about menstruation? The Beach Boys were known to incorporate previously taboo topics into their songs (e.g. “She’s Goin’ Bald” is about fellatio), so it’s entirely possible, no?

Tour dates 2025

Hi I am a big fan of the Beach boys and I have yet to see them live in concert and I really want to,however they don't have any dates lined up near where I live so I was wondering whether or not people think they will announce more American tour dates for 2025 or if the July festival dates that they are doing in Spain are their final tour dates for the year?

Name the Fandom is coming at 30k.

It won’t be long. We are the largest fan community and what you vote for will stick. FOREVER.

Some of you were cool with the mega popular “Ding Dangs” during the informal post we did last year.

Many others wanted something more respectable given some of the credibility problems the Boys have had with the general public. But the alternatives didn’t have a clear majority.

Perhaps there is something in between that you think is super catchy?

It’s time to start thinking about it.

I’ve become obsessed with the ending of California Girls

When people bring up the song, they usually fawn over the opening, which obviously deserves it. But, man, that closing section just gets me every time. All those layered vocals and instruments. There are so many things happening at once but they all mesh so perfectly, the “Wall of Sound” at its finest. It’s just such an explosion of joy and emotion, almost put me to tears the first time I heard it.

Any Information On "Gasoline Alley"?

I remember reading in a book a few years back an interview with Bruce about how if he hadn't left the group in 1972, rather than "So Tough", the album would've been called "Gasoline Alley", and included Bruce's song "Ten Years' Harmony". Is there any credibility to this interview or information on this at all? No matter where I look, I can't seem to find any information on it.
