Either an internal or external DVD reader or the possibility to boot from a USB stick/SD card.
Tails requires a 64-bit x86-64 compatible processor: IBM PC compatible and others but not PowerPC nor ARM. Mac computers are IBM PC compatible since 2006. Tails does not run on most tablets and phones.
2 GB of RAM to work smoothly. It is possible to run with less, but crashes, slowness, and strange behavior is possible.

That might be a nooby question decided to use tails for the first time.
I wanted to created persistent storage, It was creating partition for more than 10 mins, than the bar froze 3/4 of the way and system just stopped reacting. Clock stopped mouse wouldn't move etc. Waited 10 more mins and decided to reboot.
After rebooting tails, it said that storage was created but when I enter correct password it rejects it. So I guess it was half way done.
What had gone wrong?
I read and tried the backup solutions for this problem and nothing seems to work. I am pretty new to tor and I have a wifi adapter and still nothing works. No option pops up when I click the top right corner, or when I try to connect via tor connection.
Hi!
So I understand Tails is a privacy oriented distro and such. The thing is I did not find any other distro that connects automatically (without being previously paired) to a bluetooth USBs and keyboard.
What I need is a USB I can plug into someone else's computer and use for things like streaming (that is why I need Tor turned off, it's not quick enough and want to be in control of the country of my IP).
I saw a couple of posts with that requests but no response was given.
Thanks!
hello guys i falshed tails os latest version in a 16 gb usb stick and when it boot it up it loads then it shows me a black screen with my mouse cursor i tried new usb stick i tried reinstalling tails but didn't work i will really be grateful for a good person who would help me with any information <3
I know tails wipes after every use but does the updates. When I plug in tails and run “Sudo apt upgrade” it says 90 packages need updating. Cool. After I updated them i restarted tails and ran “sudo apt upgrade” again and it says 90 packages need updating. Is this a tails thing or is it a bug?
I want to know if it is possible on TAILS and the TOR browser to go onto clearnet websites and still have better anonymity and privacy than a normal browser? I need to do some stuff on a clearnet website anonymously so wondering if it will work.
Disclaimer: I'm almost completely tech illiterate, I can follow instructions if they're clear but I don't know any technical terms or processes. For all intents and purposes I should be considered to know nothing.
I did my activities on tor/tails, everything went smoothly, shut down tails normally. Next time I tried to boot up the problems started. There isn't one particular thing that keeps happening. Sometimes it'll freeze, sometimes it won't boot up at all but the USB light indicates its still working, etc. It should ne noted, i have unplugged the USB several times without shutting down in the course of trying to solve this.
I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the PS, it would occasionally tell me the PS failed to activate on boot up before the problems I'm having started but it still worked fine. Now I get the message that PS storage failed to unlock and the freezing and not booting started. I Google my problem and it suggested I try a file system check of the persistent storage as one possible solution. I did the process and when I enter the command, instead of telling me if the PS storage has errors that need to be corrected that should be corrected by the system it says "TailsData: recovering journal" its still currently running and has been on this for over 40 minutes. If I try to close the terminal window it tells me a process is still running.
Any help AT ALL would be appreciated. Is it hopeless? Should I try something else? I may have left our important details as I'm such a noob so if you need more info feel free to ask and I'll try to answer any questions that you may have.
Thanks in advance
I have been looking for a solution for days.
I had a problem with Tails, I had Tails in the first memory of 64gb and I wanted to make a storage backup to another memory of 128gb, later I installed Tails in the large memory and created the persistent storage, but by mistake I entered the backup instance and I gave backup of the empty memory to the full one and automatically everything that I had in the 64gb was deleted, leaving it empty, obviously only with the data of the 128gb. Is there any way to recover this data from the old memory? It was totally empty and I had important files in there. please help
I’ve had no keyboard issues booting into Tails on a USB plugged into a Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 6. However, for some reason it seems like my Surface Pro 8 won’t recognize the keyboard or touchpad. I’ve tried googling and couldn’t really find any people suffering from similar problems with the Surface Pro 8 specifically. Is it just a case of unsupported drivers? I’ve glanced at the Tails website and there is a section for hardware issues with some laptop touchpads, but nothing regarding Surface Pro 8.
If someone out there has a Surface Pro 8 (or 9, since I’m pretty sure they use the same keyboard) and could try booting into Tails to see if their keyboard works that’d be much appreciated, but I’m not holding out hope.
Suggestions about how I might troubleshoot the issue are welcome. I’d be willing to look into contacting the Tails support team but preferably as a last resort. Thanks.
Got Tails up and running last night. Everything seems to be working fine EXCEPT downloading for some odd reason. Whenever I try to download anything, regardless of file type, I get an error basically telling me i don't have permission to write to any files. I know the creators intentionally programmed taos to that you could only download to specific folders but even trying to download to THOSE folders fails. The error message reads: "Cound not read the contents of Persistent
Error opening directory 'home/[user]/Persistent': Permission denied"
Any reason why this could be happening?
Is TAILS the best solution vs QUESOS and/or running through a Whonix Gateway currently? How easy would it be to, say, track someone's reddit account if that account was created through just Tails?
USB is no longer recognized by my Win10 computer in Device Manager, so I know TAILS installed correctly.
However when I Press Shift + Restart, I don't see it as an option for rebooting.
How do I solve this?
It doesn’t show up on my Lenovo slim 7i boot order but it shows up on my ASUS tuf gaming laptop. I’ve tried going to the bios to change the boot order, the usb does show up there but it won’t let me move it. I’ve turned on secure boot, usb boot is enabled and the ports are always on. What else should I try?
Edit:
Pictures of boot order one in the bios and the other on the boot order screw
If not, why?
Hey experts,
I just discovered Ventoy, i need some help to find out which USB to buy.
here is what it will be used for + questions:
*I want to have Kali Linux, Parrot OS, Tails etc.
*I also want to have everything saved like programs, settings so I don't have to setup everything each time I boot into the OS (is that possible)?
*How big of a USB stick do I need for all that? 3-4 OS + saved settings etc for each of them? will 32gb, 64gb be enough?
*should I care about, what type of USB stick I should, like speed wise, 2.0/3.0, etc?
*is Ventoy the best out there? or should I look into other things?
so, a few months ago i installed tails onto a usb drive. up until now, everything worked perfectly as far as i could tell. ive used tails about 6 times since then (and installed the update a few weeks ago when i last used it), but today, after trying to boot it once again, my usb drive suddenly ceased to be recognized by my pc. i dont see it using diskmgmt and i dont see it during boot options either. the usb ports shouldnt be the issue; other devices are recognized just fine on any ports i have tried plugging it into.
the usb stick is brand new and (like i mentioned) only been used about 6 times to boot tails, so id find it highly unlikely and suspicious if its already broken. other than that (and the last update possibly breaking it), theres nothing else i could think of that caused this.
anybody know how to fix this? really need to get ahold of my PGP key if possible :/
I have linux mint on my burner laptop and I want to run tails from it does that matter?
How to load tails with usb c disk? It is skipping LG gram 17
Secure boot or none secure boot does not matter.
Goes straight to main OS kubuntu and skips usb c nvme Kingston stick
Is it just me Or it's for everyone?
Im trying to boot tails with an usb but i dont kow how to boot it. If im not mistaken i hace to reset my laptop while pressing a key but idk which one. Any advice?
I haven’t used tails in roughly 4 months, before I boot up the ol’ usb again I just wanted some insight into what might happen. For instance, the stack of version updates, will it automatically download the latest version?
Is it burnt or is it still alright. I know the answer is quite obvious, just plug it in and see what happens but I sorta want to know what I’m getting into lmao.
Thanks in advance for any help 🙏🙏
I’m having a hard time getting either one of these apps to run on my tails usb.
I would prefer to download cake wallet. But, I’ll settle for feather if I have to.
Basically, I download the cake wallet file off their GitHub. (I’ve tried the tar.gz file and the flatpak file)
And then, after I download the file I extract the tar.gz file. And then, open the file and I see the cake wallet app that I’m supposed to click on. But, when I double click it, nothing happens.
I checked the properties and it already has the read and write permissions. And the run file as exe box is checked.
So, then I tried to “open it with another application” and use the run software application. But, again nothing happens. It gives me some kind of pop up (I can’t remember exactly what it says) something along the lines of the file does not exist.
I just don’t know what else to do.
Also, when I tried to open the flatpak file, it doesn’t even let me extract that file to begin with. And whenever I look inside of it, I don’t know which file I need to try to run.
I’m assuming there’s some sort of command I need to use.
Also, is there anything special I need to do with either one of these apps after I download them, in order to make sure they run over Tor only?
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, in advance.
People always recommend TAILS and Tor for privacy, no fingerprinting and tracking. But what if some sites that I need to be anonymous in but are clearnet sites. How would I be able to access it anonymously?
So the initial connection page says it connects to tor automatically successfully, however then when I press start tor browser nothing happens
Same thing I'd I try to open it via the activities sidebar
Tried restarting the computer
Tried switching between ethernet and wifi
Nothing has worked
It was working fine until now, mightve been the new update that's messed it up idk
Pls help lol I'm clueless as to why it's not working.
Haven't use it in a couple months, now I can't remember password to enter tails...
any way of finding it ? I'm pretty sure i'm entering it correcly but looks like I'm mistaken...
thanks for advice
Hi Guys!
I downloaded Tails 5.13, verified the file, then installed it on an original AData usb stick. Im using Win 10 btw. When I tried to boot from the usb stick in order to start Tails, I got the following kernel panic message:
Then I tried to run Troubleshooting mode, and I got this:
I've been using Tails for a long time on the same computer, but never experienced anything like this. Tried out on a Sandisk usb stick as well, with the same results. Could you help me what to do or try out?
