Either an internal or external DVD reader or the possibility to boot from a USB stick/SD card.
Tails requires a 64-bit x86-64 compatible processor: IBM PC compatible and others but not PowerPC nor ARM. Mac computers are IBM PC compatible since 2006. Tails does not run on most tablets and phones.
2 GB of RAM to work smoothly. It is possible to run with less, but crashes, slowness, and strange behavior is possible.

Hi all, I started up Tor and it's saying I should upgrade to 6.10, which I plan on doing. Is it basically doing the same process as before where I download the new version and add to the usb and all that?
Not sure if I should click the link through Tor or just download outside of Tor and make a new usb with the new version like starting from scratch.
I installed tails onto my usb-stick and i can start the program, i can connect to wifi but whenever i want to start tor (with or without a bridge) the whole thing freezes. i also reflashed the img onto the stick but i still have the same problem. how can i fix that?
I have gone to use my stick today and the persistent volume says it's impossible to unlock because it is read only. I know this is a sign of a failing stick but I need access to the data on the persistent volume to back it up. Any ideas how I can get the stick out of read-only mode so that i can access my data?
many thanks.
What's going on here? Shouldn't the download be much higher than upload? I've used the default system monitor to check it if that matters.
After booting up Tails, prompt appears, I click on "Update Now" and the prompt just disappears without downloading anything or updating. I initially also had this problem with the last Tails update, but it eventually started working normally. Anyone else having this issue?
So after 5 mins of being inactive, my pc just goes into sleep mode and nothing works to put it back into normal mode. What combination should I use? I press any button, esc, click mouse, nothing works, just a black screen. Wtf is that?
“Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network” blahblahbla” I put in my password for WiFi but it won’t let me connect pointers anyone?
If I bought a used laptop, would it be possible for someone to plant some type of physical spyware that they then could view my tails activity?
I've had the same laptop and tails USB stick for years now and everything has worked as it was supposed to until today. I booted up tails for the first time in a few months and when I got to the welcome screen the mouse cursor didn't appear. I tried using it with the keyboard and was able to unlock my persistent, start tails to desktop, and explore some files, but the mouse still didn't appear. I figured a reboot wouldn't hurt and got through again to the same issue. I plugged in an external mouse and still got nothing.
Wondering if anyone has heard of this issue and if maybe there's a fix for it? It hasn't even been updated to some new version that mightve broken it, it's still back on 6.1 and everything was working fine. I couldn't imagine what might be wrong.
Anyone know how Tail's offline mode works? I'm looking for an answer with documents, ect
Hey I'm new to tails I have a msi gaming laptop that I use pretty regularly and I was wondering would it be fine to run tails on it along with my other os(windows 11) or would it be better to get a cheap computer to use it on?
I downloaded Zorion while I was using tails few weeks ago now I’m trying to download a different distro but every time it gets halfway now it fails I don’t know what the deal is. Does anyone have any answers? Like I said I been able to download in the past but now no matter what ever time they fail
I installed the last version of tails on 16gb pen drive and boot it on my old laptop.but when I trying to turn on the wifi it trun of automatically.any solutions?
Have tried connecting to hotspot, then forgetting hotspot/connecting to wifi, and it still puts me in the authentication loop. Any help ?

I downloaded tails-signing.key from tails.net, but before importing to GPG, I would like to double-check if it has not been tampered with. Is there another source where I can obtain Tails public key?
How do I run Linux Tails on a HP T620 thin client ? I already created the USB stick and also tried it on my windows pc and it works just fine. Trying to boot from the same stick on the t620 gets me an error that there is no boot device. I also checked the boot order and all seems correct to me, but I am no expert. Any solutions? I'd be grateful for any suggestion as my knowledge doesn't go far beyond simple BIOS configuration
hi i install the newest tail on a usb ( i used this usb for tails before) i get until this point but after that just loading like that on the video, nothing happens i waited 10 minutes tried troubleshooting option is the same
Just tried launching after quite a few months and I need to update..
I’m on version 5.7 or something so I can’t do the automatic update, am I right in thinking the clone option for a manual update is the easiest?
I’m guessing if I just started with a fresh tails I’d lose my persistent storage ?
Thanks
So I keep trying to install gpg4win for encryption is thrrr any other options that work. My computer is a windows computer and with tails I think tails makes it a linux when I run on tails. Any help would be appreciated with what tool is reliable and should be used.
This is to be used as an air gapped computer, any suggestions? For security reasons I want to be able to physically disconnect wireless connectivity permanently (I'm fine with doing a little DIY surgery on the hardware disconnecting the antennas). I don't need high performance and will not buy used hardware but don't want to spend an arm and a leg if I can help it.
Hello,
3 days of searching forums, testing different applications, and lots of headache has led me to finally ask the community.
I have two key pairs saved on usb sticks. For key one, my private key is a .asc file and my public key has no extension. For key two, my private key is a .asc file and my public key is a .pgp file. These keys were created about 5 years ago with what I now know to be the Seahorse application.
Back when I used these keys, I never had any problem. I had copies saved to a few usb sticks in case I misplaced any of them, and all of them worked fine.
I recently came back to tails, and learned about the switch to Kleopatra. When I try to import my keys into Kleo, it gives me a BER error and tells me it could not import my key. Same with the public key. And this is for both key pairs.
Even more strange, I came across key pair three on a usb, tried it, and it imported just fine. I went ahead and created a new key pair with kleo and am able to encrypt and decrypt messages just fine.
When I try to copy and paste my private key into text editor, it shows up as a bunch of 00/00/00/00/00/00, what I assume is binary.
I have even tried to add GPA and gnupg with the Synaptic Package Manager and nothing has worked so far.
What happened to my keys?
Are keys created with the old Seahorse application a different format than keys created by Kleopatra?
How do I validate my private key before importing it into Kleopatra?
Why is my key pasting into text editor as binary code?s
I am pretty sure I enabled a password for my keys, how come I never get a prompt to enter my password?
Is it possible to check the expire date on keys that are already expired? I doubt they are expired, but I would like to narrow down the possible causes to this.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Hello everyone, I can't get to the right place with tails, I can't create a poster account, do you know why? ?? THANKS
Recently, the response time for bridges@torproject.org emails has been very slow. Sometimes they send emails back 1-2 days late, sometimes up to 1 week late. Are you experiencing this too?
Hii, first time using tails. When I boot it up and scan for networks it’s says Wi-Fi unavailable and nothing comes up, it’s just keeps on scanning for visible networks. If I have to use a USB adapter which ones should I use thats compatible?
My laptop just died, i have my desktop with i5-12400F and rtx 40 card so no support for tail, since tails uses nouveau driver, i was wondering if i could manually update the driver and creating a custom iso/img with the updated driver so it could work.
Alternatively adding option in the GRUB « single init=/bin/bash modprobe.blacklist=nouveau » i can boot tails but in a very basic Linux command Line interface with root, so i was wandering if i can have the driver in an other usb, install everything and go back to the gui so i can keep the tails in my USB untouched and if i want to use tails from my desktop install the driver at each startup
I use my Tails installation for off-grid web work where I'd prefer not to have everything tracked and monitored. I understand there's a bit of possible leakage of personality / preferences / etc by saving preferences, but things like the terminal settings on the Terminal app would be really nice to keep in place between reboots.
If we can't put this in tails directly, does anyone have a suggestion for a 'restore my settings' process?
Edit - copying from the comments below, here's how to do this manually:
i ended up basically cding into the persistent dir, making a .config dir, making a change in the desktop, then moving the updated dir from ~/.config/ into the dotfiles/.config dir. Did that a few times, then rebooted, and voila, all the changes stuck, now with symlinnks. So we're good. Thanks again!
📢 It’s that time of year again when we emerge from our encrypted shells to ask for your support!2024 has been a life-changing year for Tails. We’ve continued doing what we do best--developing Tails as an accessible shield for privacy, anonymity, and anti-censorship. And you may have heard: we merged operations with the Tor Project.✊🏽
This transition couldn’t have come at a more critical time for online and offline freedoms. Civil society is contracting, liberatory struggles are being silenced, and investigative journalists are being surveilled through increasingly sophisticated tools. In this landscape, our merger with the Tor Project isn’t just about operational efficiencies. By joining forces, we are strategically strengthening the infrastructure necessary for responding to these evolving challenges.
