I have been teasing it for months but I am finally ready to sell. I don't have much time for it anymore and would like to go to someone who would use it. Check out the description for more details.
I have a 2003 Baja N/A 5spd and it looks like it has a burnt valve causing a misfire. I know that a proper valve job would be costly and essentially in line with the cost of replacing the whole engine with something like a lower mileage JDM one or just putting re-manufactured heads on it.
What is the better course of action? I feel like in any case it would involve replacing the timing belt components and upgrading the head gaskets.
The engine wasn't showing other issues before, but I don't know which can of worms to open necessarily as all the costs are pretty similar.
I'm hoping to get some advice on my father's Baja, he has a 2005 turbo with the sport shift automatic.
The symptoms are that it doesn't have awd, sometimes it does kick in, it's noticeable when it does, and general slipping (vibration on the road, during testing there was a point where it didn't really want to move either).
It gives the general P0700 code, and after a little bit of use flashes the transmission temp light.
After the time that it had trouble moving it had P0720 as well.
We changed the fluid (4 drain / refills), it was a darker brown, and have the level correct (measured while warmed up and running). He also changed the filter on the side of it.
We tried the method to get the transmission dash light to flash out tcm codes, to later find out it doesn't work on the sport shift auto, only the "normal" one (It works on mine, a 2006 "regular" automatic).
Something that I just found and will look into is maybe the transmission cooler is plugged / restricted?
Any advice, or more things to try? Thank you.
Hey all, sorry if this is a dumb question, but I’ve been noticing that my steering wheel is jerky when I first start up the car in the morning. I checked the power steering fluid level and it is indeed low, so I want to top it off to see if that helps. Is there a specific kind of fluid I need to buy to top it off or is any power steering fluid ok?
I might possibly be in need of a new windshield.
Quick googling for “Subaru Baja windshield” shows it’s either discontinued or very expensive.
I’m guessing our windshields are interchangeable with other Subies but I can’t seem to find any info.
Anyone know anything?
Apologies if this is in the wrong subreddit, I don't use reddit much. I am replacing the engine on a Baja I picked up (NA) and had a helluva time yanking the starter, mainly because there's a bunch of stuff in the way, my tools could be better, and the biggest one is the starter is CHUNKY. This Baja has the Non-AVLS EJ253 with a starter part number of 23300AA230R1 (per parts dot Subaru dot com). Based on what I can see, the vehicles that got the AVLS EJ253 have a different, more compact starter with the same cranking power (As did the EJ255, 257, and EZ30R it would seem), part number 23300AA49A (also per Subaru parts). Anyone have any idea if I could directly swap this in? The bolt holes look like they'd match up but my main concern is the pinion gear matching up. If that part specifically doesn't work, is there a slim starter that does? To clarify my starter does work I'm just willing to spend money to make putting it back in easier haha
Want to purchase a Baja and my budget would be around 10k. What kind of mileage should I be looking for/expecting to get?
Just curious how many here offroad their bajas and do water crossings. What's the deepest you've 'succesfully' went? What relevant mods do you have?
I recently came across this vid. I had always heard that we had to pull our engines to replace the head gaskets because the head bolts hit the frame rails. But this guy just loosens them up and finagles the heads out.
Does anyone know if this is possible on our Bajas? If so, I might be able to tackle my impending head job myself!
I'm having trouble fixing this idle air control check engine light. Here are all the things I've done or replaced.
its been a mixture of me working on it with my limited knowledge and been to a reputable shop. The shop originally put in a new alternator, battery, and battery cables because of a battery light on the dash along with some CEL codes. However they put in a faulty alternator and I drove it home while the voltage was slowly dropping. I was so close to home so did my best to limp her home but battery voltage was seeing 7 volts before I shut her off in the driveway. Towed it back to the shop and put in a working alternator and no issues since besides this one code P0519.I have seen
The code seems to come on after warming up and driving about 40 miles then at some point when I let off the throttle to come to a stop for example the code with light up. It will eventually go away after some time, just to come back.
Not sure where to go from here in trouble shooting and been just throwing new parts at it or having the shop do their best to diagnose not sure where to go from here.
My thoughts are its an electrical issue, or maybe the ECU was damaged from the low voltage?
Would any of you know of a good Subie Shop in Dallas, Houston or??? to rebuild/replace an engine? The Baja is near Dallas? Thanks Glenn Barnett Houston, TX
Looking at selling manual na Baja 100k miles. How much are they going for?
In the snow and ice up here in Kentucky, it has made me wish strongly for a more aggressive tire. I have very pedestrian shoes on the ol' rig here, the kind you might ease around in. Those of you with one of these rigs, know they are eas'n rigs.
I know the size difference is about 5% and, good news, it would likely true up my speedometer. (I run about 3.5Mph slower than reality on my rig, and this might do good for a feller.)
Spoilers: from NASIOC, I know these rigs are tight on size. I am looking to see if I can get away with the extra 5% differential on size, so if you are running something like this; let yonder feller know.
The Baja is the only older car I really like the look of. Is it worth the price and maintenance? I would need this car to be a daily driver and last me 3 years through college. What are your thoughts? Is manual more reliable than automatic? Is it not a great car to get when you are on a budget?
Yesterday, I bout a 2003 5 speed. It is in great condition, except for the paint fade. I was wondering is there a palce to store the scissor jack.
My 2006 Subaru Baja Turbo MT might need a new ECU. I'm still running some tests and make sure of that, but in the case that I do, I'd like to know how specific of an ECU I need.
For example, do I need to replace it with an ECU taken from another 2006 Baja Turbo MT? Could it be from an automatic? A non-turbo? A different year turbo? Not sure if anyone knows.
