TD Bank hit with record $3 billion fine over drug cartel money laundering

https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/10/investing/td-bank-settlement-money-laundering/index.html

New York CNN — TD Bank will pay $3 billion to settle charges that it failed to properly monitor money laundering by drug cartels, regulators announced Thursday.

The fine includes a $1.3 billion penalty that will be paid to the US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, a record fine for a bank. TD also intends to pay $1.8 billion to the US Justice Department and plead guilty to resolve the US government’s investigation that the bank violated of the Bank Secrecy Act and allowed money laundering.

Best High Yield ETF

Is YYY worth it?

I’m think about investing in YYY but I’m still open to suggestions of other high yield ETFs. I just want to confirm this with other who have invested in YYY for the long term:

  1. Does this ETF pay stable month dividends as mentioned?

  2. At what point is the 4.6% management fee deducted? Is it factored into the 11.5% yield or the 11.5% is after the fee deduction? Also is the fee yearly deducted or at the close of your position?

Finally, are there another other good high yield income ETFs recommendations for the 5-10 year investment range?

These are the stocks on my watchlist (10/10)

Hi! I am an ex-prop shop equity trader.
This is a daily watchlist for trading: I might trade all/none of the stocks listed, and even stocks not listed! I only hold some/all MAG 7 stocks and market indices long-term. If you use Old Reddit, click “Show Images” at the top to expand the charts. Any positions stated aren’t recommendations, I’m following subreddit rules to disclose positions. I use IBKR TWS for my platform and charts.

Some stocks I post may be low market cap. These are potentially good candidates to day trade; I have no opinion on them as investments. This means the potential of the stock moving today is what makes it interesting, not the business, long-term prospects, or the people involved.

PLEASE ask specific questions. Questions like “Thoughts on _____?” or something answered in the watchlist will be ignored unless you add detail and your own opinion. If you post a question and delete it after I answer it, I will block you—information is meant to be shared in open discussion. I am not answering questions if I’m still long or short a stock beyond what I update.

What to do with high loss %, with little chance of profit

Hi, first time poster here, and pretty new to trading. About 4 years ago I tried starting, but left it behind because of life etc. Now I've got back to it and I'm using eToro to do some small trailing stop loss stock trading. $100 here and there.

But 4 years ago I had messed up and not set a stop loss on a Buy position on a stock, and I'd forgotten about it, so now it's at -58% PL. I don't see it recovering in the near future, if ever. What should I do?

The way I see it, I could do one of the following:

  1. Leave it and hope
  2. Close now and take the loss

What I'd really like to do is set something to grab something back. I can't change the stop loss setting on the position.

Any ideas?

Have a general question? Want to offer some commentary on markets? Maybe you would just like to throw out a neat fact that doesn't warrant a self post? Feel free to post here!

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions, you should include relevant information, such as the following:

* How old are you? What country do you live in?

* Are you employed/making income? How much?

* What are your objectives with this money? (Buy a house? Retirement savings?)

* What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?

* What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)

* What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors? Any other assets?)

* Any big debts (include interest rate) or expenses?

* And any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer. .

Why are stock returns accelerating while GDP growth is slowing down?

According to the data in tradingview which is explained in this article, the change in S&P 500 annual returns has been increasing each decade over the last 150 years. We have been seeing exponential increase in stock value. And that's taking inflation into account.

But (real) GDP Growth in the US has been steadily slowing down from 4% in the 50-70s to around 2% over the last decade.

Isn't this a paradox?

Scenario: Am I stupid for letting $70k sit in SNSXX?

I’m 32 years old and want to buy a house in the next 5 years or so. Total cashable assets (including the $70k in SNSXX) are about $140k with about $30k in VOO and similar ETFs.

I’ve hesitated to put the $70k “properly” in the market due to general risk. If I want that money to grow beyond what SNSXX provides (e.g., VOO) is it dumb to put that $70k in ETFs?

If I were buying a house next year, obviously that would be risky. But what if I don’t need that $70k for at least a few more years? Unfortunately my whole family lives in expensive as hell Southern California, so I’m going to need some serious cash for a down payment and my partner isn’t as financially comfortable as I am. Together, we make $230k per year (before tax).

I’ve never put such a large amount in any stock or index fund and am hesitant. If it’s stupid to keep $70k in SNSXX for a few years, what would you do?

Is the stock market growth realistic?

I’ve noticed that the SPY500 has nearly doubled over the last 5 years, while the GDP hasn’t risen anywhere close to that level. The post-pandemic crash made sense, and so did the subsequent rise due to quantitative easing. But now, the continued upward trend doesn’t seem to align with actual economic growth.

If you factor in modest future GDP growth, one might expect the stock market to be where it was pre-pandemic, or perhaps slightly higher due to normal yearly increases. But doubling? That seems disconnected from reality.

What’s driving this surge? Is it just inflation, low interest rates, or something else? Curious to hear your thoughts!

AT&T ($T) bull flag on the daily (10/9/24)

Been watching AT&T for a hot minute, besides the fact they got hacked, Oppenheimer asset management firm has placed many calls on $T today (Wednesday October 9th) and a few other telecom stocks. They stated they believe AT&T ($T) will resume a bullish uptrend on the short term. Thoughts?

What would you do with big capital gain?

Hi all - need some “what would you do” advice—

I have a very large (and lucky) stock bet that has, on paper, gained almost 200k in profit. This is a long term capital gain investment. I am a w-2 worker and have mostly consistent income from my job. What I usually do in the stock market is just sell enough stocks (maybe 20k worth) plus putting some additional tax withholding on my w-4 so I end up not having to make any kind of additional estimated tax payment to the IRS and I most of the time get a small refund (my wife doesn’t work and we are MFJ).

Since I want to take advantage of this capital gain increase, is there any tips or strategies to lessen the tax blow? Just take the hit and reap the great gain? Sell half/third over multiple tax years and hope/pray it doesn’t tank?

My big hesitation with selling the entire amount or a lot of it is the increasing marginal tax rate and the fact I know nothing about making estimated tax payments.

FANG (Diamondback Energy) - a Ticking ESG Time Bomb in the Oil Patch?

I've been researching Diamondback Energy (FANG) lately and wanted to share my findings and get your thoughts.

TL;DR: FANG shows strong financials and growth potential, but faces ESG challenges and sector volatility.

Here's what I've found:

Financials:

  • Revenue projected to grow from $3.96B (2019) to $25.27B (2028)
  • EBITDA margins holding around 80%
  • Positive cash flow since 2021, expected to grow

Note: These projections are from FinancialModelingPrep and assume current trends continue. As we know, the energy sector can be unpredictable.

Stock Performance:

  • Up 15.2% from Sept 26 to Oct 4, 2024
  • RSI at 57.49 (neutral to slightly bullish)
  • Technical indicators (TEMA > DEMA) suggest a potential uptrend

Analyst Opinions:

  • Mostly "Buy" or "Overweight" ratings
  • Barclays upgraded to "Overweight" on Oct 2, 2024
  • UBS maintains an "Underperform" rating (important to note the contrarian view)

ESG Considerations:

  • Overall score: 65.5 (as of June 30, 2024)
  • Environmental score declining
  • Social score remains strong (74.05)

This reminds me of the challenges faced by Exxon Mobil in 2021 when activist investor Engine No. 1 won board seats due to ESG concerns. It shows how important these metrics have become, even in traditional energy.

Recent Developments:

  • Merged with Endeavor Energy Resources (Sept 2024)
  • Q3 2024 production guidance: 565,000-569,000 BOE/d (22% QoQ increase)
  • Invested in EPIC Crude pipeline
  • Exploring natural gas opportunities

The merger is a bit like the Occidental-Anadarko deal in 2019. That one didn't fare that great, so it'll be interesting to see how FANG manages integration.

Potential Risks:

  1. Merger integration challenges
  2. Oil price volatility
  3. Potential regulatory changes

Remember the oil price crash in 2020? It shows how quickly things can change in this sector.

My Thoughts:

FANG seems well-positioned in the Permian Basin with a clear growth strategy but the declining environmental score is concerning given the increasing focus on ESG.

It's definitely not for the faint-hearted hesitant given the sector's volatility and ESG trends.

What are your thoughts? Am I overestimating the ESG risks? Underestimating the growth potential? I'm particularly interested in hearing from those with experience in the energy sector or ESG investing.

Let's discuss!

Puts and calls - confused!

Ok. I understand the basic concept. A call is an option to buy a stock within a certain time at a certain price. A put is the option to sell a stock within a certain time at a certain price.

I still cannot wrap my head around this screen. Can somebody please explain to me what I'm looking at like I'm a child.

Like if the price right now is 132.89 why don't I just buy 30 put options to sell a stock at 200 and cash in immediately. Obviously it doesn't work that way, I know. But why doesn't it make sense?! What is the strike price? And why are there so many numbers??!!!

I switched from Schwab brokerage to Fidelity brokerage today . . .

Preface by saying that until last year (September/October time frame), I was happily using TD Ameritrade for equity investments and grew my account to approximately $585k. I was very pleased how their phone app worked, along with their website, and particularly "Think or Swim" for day trading . . . Schwab bought them out and I was almost immediately dissatisfied with them, e.g., none of my 7-8 "Sector Watchlists" migrated over to Schwab, nor did my historical portfolio performance record (including access to all monthly account statements).

Since then, I can count at least 1/2 dozen major issues I have had with Schwab, including dividends not automatically being reinvested in the equities I owned which was automatic via TDA for any stocks I bought. At Schwab, you have to do it individually for each equity.

Twice, I almost transferred my account (now $755k) to Fidelity, but I stopped short of taking that action. The last straw was not having access to the "Portfolio Performance" tab on Schwab's PC website. This has been going on for approx. the last 2 weeks and I said, "The hell with it . . . I have had it with this outfit." Today, after sending them an email, i.e., telling them just what I am conveying here, I started the account transfer to Fidelity. I am hoping it takes less than the week Fidelity is estimating, as I was close to selling a couple of equities that I have significanly profited from. I should also mention - I have a TSP government investment account (but for reasons I wont get into here, I was not able to transfer my money there, nor did I want to, as they do not deal with individual equities); and, an E-Trade account that I use for swing trades and occasional options trading.

Is anyone else upset with how Schwab operates versus TDA? Also, you folks with Fidelity - what's your experience? Thank you . . .

Need advice on these picks

I put together my own mid - long term CFD plan.

I chose these stocks on July 25th and put them on a watchlist:

Disney, Visa, Broadcom, Nvidia, Vanguard S&P 500, Berkshire Hathaway, USA 500, USA Tech 500,

Since July 25th the group has increased by an average of 8.7%

If I was to split an investment of £2000 over trading212 would this be smart?

I am building my savings, but is there any here that anyone would suggest getting into right away as they’re undervalued? (Probably going to have to enter slowly

Really at a loose end here, would love advice as I’m confused as to whether to go with a fund like fidelity or just go for a long term strategy myself.

Estee Lauder: Buyable after is 70% decline?

Estee Lauder has seen a significant decline from its peak of $375 per share in January 2022, now trading around $96. With a market cap of $35 billion and an enterprise value of $47 billion, the company has serious brand power with well-known brands like Clinique, MAC, and Jo Malone.

However a profit margin of only 4.2% compared to an average of 9.8%, and flat revenue growth. Despite a gross margin of 71%, the free cash flow has also been lagging. Analysts project a potential recovery (they lost $1.5 billion in 2023 and seem to back to $1.5+B profit in 2024), estimating the stock could reach $230 in the next five years.

I am 18 How should i start investing.

Hello!

As the title says i am 18, i live in the UK and i have started a job in the motor trade. i make around 1,400-1,500 GBP per month but due to the cost of living in the UK moving out of my parents house is looking less and less likely so i want to start investing wisely to help grow my money in the short and long term.

I currently have a savings account which is a 1.66% Gross p.a and a second savings account that was made for me when i was a child which is 3.55% gross. I have 1,000 GBP in my 3.55% gross account and 450 in my 1.66& gross p.a account.

I am looking for a good way to expand my savings and invest for short term earning to help pay for my current expenses that my salary won't completely cover and a long term earning for later in life so i am set for the future.

I am looking to spend around 10% of my monthly earnings on short term investments and my left over money at the end of each month will go into my savings account. (as recommended to me. please tell me if this isn't good advice)

I guess what i need is some information on starting to invest, which of my two savings accounts is better to keep my savings in, any tips, advice. and where i should focus on starting to invest.

any and all advice is welcome and will be gratefully noted down.

Thanks in advance.

Is this good news for varta ag

If Varta’s restructuring efforts and strategic partnerships—especially with Porsche—prove successful, it could indeed have a positive impact on its stock price, potentially pushing shares into the €30 to €40 range. Here are some factors that could influence this price movement:

  1. Successful Restructuring

If Varta effectively implements its restructuring plan, reduces its debt, and improves profitability, investor confidence is likely to increase. A successful turnaround can lead to higher valuations, positively impacting share prices.

  1. Strategic Partnerships

The partnership with Porsche, which secures a critical supply of high-performance batteries, could enhance Varta’s market position in the growing electric vehicle segment. Positive developments or announcements regarding this partnership might attract investor interest, leading to an increase in share price.

  1. Market Demand for Batteries

The ongoing shift towards electric vehicles and renewable energy storage solutions creates a favorable environment for battery manufacturers. If Varta can capitalize on this trend, it could significantly increase revenues and market share, positively influencing its stock price.

  1. Investor Sentiment and Market Conditions

Broader market trends and investor sentiment toward the battery and EV sectors will also play a significant role. If investors remain bullish on the battery market, it may contribute to higher share prices for companies like Varta.

  1. Antitrust Approval and Regulatory Factors

Successfully navigating antitrust approvals for the financing agreement will be crucial. Any delays or complications could affect investor confidence and the stock price.

Conclusion

If Varta navigates these challenges effectively and capitalizes on its strategic partnerships, reaching a share price of €30 to €40 could be plausible. However, stock prices are subject to market volatility and investor perceptions, so it’s essential to monitor developments closely.
