Have you ever wanted to buy a game on Steam but didn't know if it was good? Have you ever had just enough money for an indie game but didn't know whether it was worth buying? Have you ever asked yourself, "Should I buy this game?"

Then you're in luck. Here, you can ask others questions about any game on Steam or any other game on any console, whether it is about the graphics, the plot, the game play, or even the length.

Do not open links to games sent to you through PM, as these often contain malware

Rules

  • 1 - Help Us Help You. When asking for a recommendation, help us by providing context to your question. Give us details about what types of games you enjoy, which games you don't enjoy, and why you're unsure about your purchase. People can't help you make a decision if you don't express yourself. For this reason, we require all posts to be at least 300 characters long. Why Does Rule 1 (Help Us Help You) Exist?

  • 2 - You may not make threads on unreleased content. People can't give you a recommendation on something that no one had the chance to try out.

  • 3 - Touchy Subjects, Appeals: In the cases where the mods have a problem with your conduct and there's no specific rule, moderator decisions stand. For disputes please Message the Moderators.

  • 4 - No spoilers without a warning. Spoilers include, and are not limited to, revealing something about the plot late in the game or explaining an important plot point. This goes for both comments and posts. Mark something as a spoiler by putting the spoiler text in between >! and !< (with no space in between). It should appear as like this: Broodje eats socks!

  • 5 - Please no trading here. While giving away games is fine, this is not the place for the trading of games of any sort. Go to /r/SteamGameSwap to do that.

While we do not care to pry into your own personal decision, we will not allow you to tell others to emulate, torrent, pirate, modify, or in any other way get a hold of a game without legal consent of the producer. Paid mods fall in this category, but free mods generally are fine. This goes for both comments and posts. Please read Why Does Rule 6 (No Emulation) Exist?

  • 7 - No spam of any sort, including using the same words or phrases repeatedly, writing nonsense to bypass the minimum character limit, Youtube/Twitch channel promotions, promotion of your own game, repetitive/unwarranted recommendations, or links to websites outside of the normal realm of video game shopping.

Huge Steam Sale for a game series (Should I buy?)

I was looking on steam for some games to play, then I came across a game series that was on sale, and cost a total of 0,99 Euro. I was curious and checked it out, a game series called Hexen. (I am talking about the Heretic + Hexen collection) I need to state that overall if I bought this I would save over 18 euros! It's marked as Action, FPS, Classic and Fantasy. I do not know much about these games, so what do you guys think?

Best "Auto-Shooter" Game?

Looking for a good auto shooter I can sink tons of hours into. I want a game with lots of content, and possibly hundreds of hours of playtime. I currently have Deep Rock Galactic Survivor and it's quite fun. Right now I'm debating between Halls of Torment, Vampire Survivors, or Brotato. Which of these would you recommend, or would you recommend a game that's not listed here? Also, something that works on the Steam Deck is a plus as well.

There's one game that I can't find that is in this category as well. It's like a gritty and dark themed Medieval like game. Can't remember the name.

What do you guys think?

Sea of Stars, Chained Echoes, Octopath Traveler or other JRPG

I've had an interest lately to try getting into jrpgs after never really trying them. A little background with my gaming history: I like RPGs a lot, but JRPGs never really seemed my style as random encounters and grinding aspect aren't my favorite. I like good narrative driven games and do enjoy strategy and turn based combat. I recently played a little bit of Pokémon Emerald and was reminded how there's elements of Pokémon games that feel a bit like a jrpg that I do enjoy, but it's a bit too simple in terms of the gameplay and story. These three games I've heard good things about and I'm trying to see if I'd like one more than the others. I'm also open to suggestions if there's a different one that's better. Any 3d ones I should just play instead? Are the Ni no kuni games any good? I'm a big fan of studio ghibli. I've heard octopath traveler II is better so I'm open to that one instead. I'd say graphics wise I'm leaning towards OT or Chained Echoes as Sea of Stars looks a bit too cartoony? But a great story/gameplay is more important to me.

Any good shooter games

I for some reason don't feel like shooter games are my thing until I tried titan fall 2. It was fun and was unique. I was wondering if there is any recommendations for shooters that are fun.

I liked titan fall mainly because of the concept, like I loved fighting in a titan but you are also not too strong because there is titans against you aswell.

Basically I'm looking for a shooting game with something unique or fun abilities (preferably on gamepass or cheap)

WSIB If I want a story based game, that I can finish in 10 days

Have 10 days off work, wanted to know what would be a good story based game to play. I prefer character driven narratives and don't enjoy much rage inducing gameplay mechanics. I don't mind the first game in a series, so long as it isn't too long. Looking for a game with a proper plot and linear story. Although I do enjoy open world games I don't mind a non-openworld experience either.

Favourite games: Spiderman 2018 and Miles Morales, The Uncharted Series, Batman Arkham

Need a game to get stuck in to

Having trouble figuring out what game to put my hours in to. Was looking at rise of the ronin, grandia hd collection, unicorn overlord, dragons dogma 2, stellar blade or granblue fantasy. I reckon I will get them all at some point but don't know what would be the best to fork full price for right now and what I should wait for a sale. Any suggestions welcome.

Should I buy The Invincible?

Only recently heard about this planet-exploration mystery game. It is reminiscent of Firewatch - which I loved. I have read spoiler-free reviews saying that there’s no mini-map and that it’s possible to get lost, but I’m wondering how much of a problem this really is. I would love to think I will get along with this game. Anyone with experience of playing this? Has anyone fan-made a map? Cheapest I’ve seen it is about £24. Should I go for it?

Should I buy Animal Well or Hades 2?

I am planning to eventually get both, but I have a couple of concerns.

For Animal Well, I'm blind about this games - reviews seem to indicate that it's a collect-athon rather than a combat metroidvania in the vein of Hollow Knight. Can anyone enlighten me as to the gameplay nature of this game, and how large it is?

For Hades 2, I'm concerned about the early access tag. I loved Hades 1, and I'm sure I'll love the gameplay, but without spoiling me, what features are missing at the moment?

Looking for fps games that have good gunplay

Looking for fps with good gun play and freedom

As the title suggests, I am looking for a fps with good gun play and many things to do beside main quest( many approach is a solid bonus)

Games that I've played before:

Stalker Anomaly: love the gun play and the open field of things that you can do

Fallout 3/NV: the freedom of choice in the game, but the gun play is lacking imo

Ready or Not: linear but I like the atmosphere as well as the gun mechanics

Cyberpunk: the movement and the night city is nice

Csgo: not CS2 though I don't like it as much

Farcry 3 4 5/ Tom Clancy's series: I find them okay, not the best but far from the worst.

Metro series: fucking good both story and gameplay wise

Thanks!

Finally got me 3DS back after a month or so at a repair shop. What are some of your pavorite guilty pleasure games? Don't be scared to recommend some obscure and unorthodox titles.

Preferably some chill, kick back and play kind of games. Life Sims like animal crossing are good, but I like to have the choice between excitement and peaceful moments. Some favorites include yo kai watch, ever oasis, and fantasy life. I'm also a big fan of player interaction with the world, stuff like sitting down on a park bench, or looking through a telescope from the top of a mountain, those little moments can make a game for me. I'm not too picky, though, so give me some of your weird, but still good, games you've played, it can be anything.

I’m looking for a political simulator, where I can do anything I want, where I can be a democrat, communist, fascist, technocrat, completely free to me to decide

I’ve already tried hearts of iron 4 Victoria 2 Victoria 3 Europa universalius 4 Democracy 3/4 Stellaris And a few of the superpower games, plus also the power and revolution, SUZERAIN and none seem to fit the bill, I’m willing to try new and old games, I just want complete freedom in my hands, thank you! 🙏 I absolutely loved hearts of iron 4 but it doesn’t give me complete freedom, and Victoria 3 would be the same, I know I’m not giving much to go on, I’m purely looking for recommendations please!

Should I buy Kenshi?

I heard only good stuff about the game, but I am not really into RPGs that much, but I am trying to get into different genres to experiment more and expand my library. I love racing games, shooters, action games. I heard Kenshi is difficult, but sometimes I like difficulty in games where the systems are simple, like Sekiro, it doesn't have that much of a leveling system, no damage boost after certain encounters, it's all about that skill in parrying, so is the difficulty of Kenshi similar to sekiro's?

Anyone know of any open ended RPGS with meaningful choices and actually satisfying combat/moment to moment gameplay

So I've been playing fallout 4 for the first time, and trying to take a bit of a plunge into the "open ended RPG" genre, I really enjoy how the emergent moments and decision making (as in being able to make decisions in gameplay instead of just through a menu. EG: Killing a group leader, stealing, etc...). It almost reminds me of dishonored, and I've also heard the FO4 is the least like this in the series, but while I am really enjoying the game, the bullet spongey combat isn't my favourite thing. Basically I'm really hoping there's a game that has this type of emergent gameplay and desicion making of these Bethesda style RPGs, but with genuinely satisfying first/third person combat/gameplay, doesn't have to be guns a blazing as the first thing I think of actually is dishonored, which is one of my favourite gsmes of all time. Some more examples of games that I'd say have this for me(as in satisfying combat/gameplay) are the afformentioned dishonored series, ghost of Tsushima, Far cry, and really any game with cool ways to use stealth (although stealth is not a requirement). Thanks a lot!!!

(I've got a PS5 and capable PC)

War

Is there any war games like the movie vikings where I can control a whole army and take over the world or just survive as and build up my army and grow stronger to be able to take over other city's. I don't want a first person. I want to control the whole army and no guns I want the medieval times

Should I buy Rise of The Ronin, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, or something else?

Not sure which I should buy. Looking for something that has fun combat but isn’t overwhelming for a noob like me (I play games on easy). Favorite games include Red Dead Redemption 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Parts 1&2, and GTA V. As you can tell, I’m into the big AAA titles with great graphics and stories that are somewhat grounded in reality, maybe other than Horizon Forbidden West, and The Last of Us to a lesser extent.

Edit: Obviously Devil May Cry is not grounded in reality but it looks like good/fun combat and I’m hoping not too difficult on the easiest mode.

WSIB Mac Puzzle game under 10$

My steam account has 11 dollars in it, and I want a fun puzzle game to play. Some puzzle games I already play are Patricks Parabox, Baba is You, and Hexcells. I'm playing on my M1 Macbook, so it needs to be Mac compatible. I want a game that has simple controls and intuitive gameplay, but uses these mechanics in unique ways.

Which has a better single player experience? Tekken 8 or Street Fighter 6?

I never go online to play fighting games so I spend all of my time in single player, so which one is better? I don't wanna buy one game and find out the hard way that there's not much to do besides online, so what does each have to offer? I've played Tekken 7 but I've never played a Street fighter game. Also which one has a better customization system? I've heard good things about both.

Any Games Recommendations for PS5?

I got a $100 playstation gift card for my birthday recently and I’m wondering what to spend it on. I have PS+ Premium so feel free to recommend anything on there as well. If you want a guideline some of my favourite games right now are: Stardew Valley, NBA 2k24, Balatro, and Riders Republic. Fighting, Strategy, and Adventure Games are some genres I enjoy and I tend to stay away from Horror games (although I play Lethal Company on pc), I do play pretty much anything though. Thank you in advance :)

WSIB story heavy, cinematic games

Before I talk, I’ve pretty much played most if not all Sony’s exclusives story heavy games, which is the God Of War series, The Last of Us series, Uncharted series, Marvel’s Spiderman series, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon series, Death Stranding, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth as well as Final Fantasy 16, hell, I also loved the Order 1886 and Days Gone’s story. Also, I should probably add that yes, I also played RDR2 and 1, Witcher 3, The Metal Gear Solid series, Alan Wake 1 and 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Like A Dragon series, Persona series and The Walking Dead (telltale).

And I love all of them, I love the story they want to tell or at least admire their focus on it as well as their cinematic experience. I’m asking if I might have missed anything similar. I’m open to a variety of genre, so feel free to recommend anything that you feel have an impactful story or a meaningful one!!

WSIB: Games where you can lose the battle but win the war

So let me explain what I mean here. In most games, if you ever lose, you're pretty much instantly put into a total failure state. Wiped in an RPG? Game Over. Out of health in an action game? Back to the checkpoint with you. Lose a critical building in an RTS? Mission failed. Now obviously this isn't a bad design choice at all and most games thrive on it, but I'm looking for something different. A game (I'm open on genre) where you can, say, get greedy on a dungeon dive, get wiped out, but you can send in another crew or something to try again, maybe even recover your lost characters or items. But - and this is a big but - not through the game ever forcing you to take an major arbitrary L through the plot.

Some examples of what I'm thinking of:

  • AI War: Generally understood you'll lose a fleet or two on an attack gone wrong during a campaign, this is punished by game mechanics but proper defensive planning means you can survive and bounce back.
  • Pyre: Narrative adapts if you lose games, picking yourself up after failure is a theme - but the game never forces you to lose just to show this.
  • Total War/Paradox Map-gazing/Other Grand Strategy: Very easy to take an unexpected loss and have to see how robust your empire is when you have to scrape together a new army with barbarians at the gates.
  • Xcom: You're going to take some losses to the aliens, in terms of manpower, map control, and even whole missions, but you're given the tools to manage these losses.
  • Darkest Dungeon: Probably the best example of what I'm talking about. It's very easy for things to go sideways and lose a veteran party with expensive gear. But clawing your way back is a skill too, as you can assemble new adventurers and run some easy dungeons to build up wealth and supplies to start making progress again.

And a point to the other side, games like Dark Souls aren't really an example since while you are expected to recover after frequent failure, that failure never significantly advances the game state, you just keep doing the same thing hopefully in a better way.

So what are your favourite games that let you keep playing and recover from failure? Looking for PC, Switch, and PS5 suggestions personally, but open to hearing any of your favourites!

WSIB: Games on Switch for $13.95 or less?

I just booted up my Switch for the first time in a while and noticed that I have $13.95 left on my eShop account and decided that I should buy a game. What games would you recommend that are $13.95 or below?

Some of the usual suspects I see people recommend for a low price are Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Celeste, and Hades whenever they go on sale. I own and have played all of these, although I didn't really like Hollow Knight.

WSIB Looking for open world games with good combat [PC]

Steam. I’ve been playing Rise of the Ronin on PS5 and I really like the combat in that game, but I’m not quite a fan of the difficulty all the time and not good at parry timing when it’s like it is in RotR, so I would like to take a bit of a break but with a similar type of game.

Games I already own that might be suggested

Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowwind, Witcher 3 (combat in all of these is bad to meh on TW3’s part imo), Ys 7, 8, Memories of Celceta (these aren’t open world), AC Oddyssey and most of the ones preceding it besides Origins, as I have no interest in origins or Valhalla (or Ubisoft games on PC because their launcher is awful)

I know Ghost of Tsushima is coming in less than a week and I was planning to get that, but Sony’s recent shenanigans means I can’t justify buying it from a “don’t want to support the practices” angle.

Good co-op game to play on a Mac

Hi all,

Me and my girlfriend are expecting our first child next week. The birth induction is already scheduled so we expect to have to wait 2 to 3 days in the hospital before the actual birth.

I was thinking about taking my MacBook M1 Laptop to the hospital and kill some time with a good co-op game (or multiple ones). I will take 2 Xbox controllers as well so it would be cool if the game works nicely with them.

My first game idea was "Baldur's Gate 3" since we are both into RPG's (long time "World of Warcraft" classic players) but we also like more casual games like "Overcooked" or "It Takes Two". Probably something more on the chill side since we will be already stressed and we are both noobs with controllers (keyboard+mouse 4life :P)

Should I buy Dark Souls 3 or RimWorld?

I know, I know. DS3 and RimWorld are 2 completely different games. However, I got £20 to spend and both of those games fit my budget perfectly. I love colony sims and Rimworld seems like the perfect game for me, from generative stories to that sci-fi theme, not to mention the overwhelming positive reviews about the game. But, I do also currently have an itch to play a souls-like game, after playing Elden Ring, and I've heard great stuff about DS3, especially from my friends, who all recommended it to me. I also love the theme of DS3, a mix of medieval and fantasy. I'm a very indecisive person so I'm gonna see what you guys say.

Laid-Back Single Player

I have Game Pass PC, and looking to play something that is more laid back and story focused. Normally I play games like Shooters, or PVP types, but am wanting to find something more relaxing than shooters, and doesn't need as much time investment than PVP. I'm open to just about any type of game (First Person, Third Person, Open World etc) as long as it's more laid back and relaxing. Thanks! (It doesn't have to be only on Game Pass and can be on Steam as well)
