How to customize search result layout to display file thumbnail?

Anyone has idea how to display thumbnail of a file in search result in Sharepoint Online? From the picture link below I just have Word documents able to show but Excel and other files can't show.

SPO issue - saving excel files into SPO while working on them

I was curious having seen one or two others mention stuff similar, if this was more widespread:

Users save a file into SPO. They’ll work on it on the local version (meaning they download the file), then when they save it back get the occasional “cant save this file” for one reason or another. It will eventually save, though the users may have to rename the file later and save it. Seems more of a thing with the accounting group….no idea why unless it’s something with Excel,SPO and Caching.

thanks!

Get last modified date from all files from SPO

Recently i've started monitoring way more the things in the SPO in my workspace and i've been looking for a way to get what files are being used/accesed recently.
Is there any way to get the last modified date from all files from a SPO as an admin of the site?

SharePoint Throttled My IP for No Reason

Hi, everyone!

So I think the title explained itself quite well. I had a cloud storage provider that used Microsoft 365 E5 with 5TBs storage. I had stored around 1.5TBs of data there. Now that provider’s shutting down, and I need to download all my stuff before January 1, 2025. However, both my upload and download have been severely throttled by SharePoint servers. I’m only getting like 5% of my overall speeds.

I also have another official plan by Microsoft with again 5TBs of storage where I plan to re-upload my data to, but it’s throttled also.

However, when I share some files with the old and new provider to another person, and attempt to download them on another connection with similar speeds, everything’s fine.

How do I get Microsoft to lift the throttle on my IP address? It’s not like am abusing the service…just using up my storage. And I hadn’t even used either service for months for some weird triggers to turn on. PLEASE, help me!

Can a new install of SP Migration Tool (SPMT) detect existing migrations?

Can the SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) detect whether or not a site has already been migrated? I had SPMT installed on machine ABC, but ABC has crashed and I cannot get to any of the data/files that the SPMT had created, so I am installing SPMT on machine XYZ. If I point the new install of SPMT at the existing on-prem SP 2016 server, and our SPO tenant, will it be able to detect what has already been migrated to SPO? I'm thinking 90% of the content is already in SPO, so I just want the tool to migrate anything that has been changed in the last week, and going forward.

Tips to start on Sharepoint?

Hi, I was given a task for my college project, im a designer, and I have to make an intranet for a company and I don’t know anything about sharepoint. I already did the research about what they need in the intranet I just don’t know anything about it.

If anyone could give me tips about what I can do and where to start I would be so grateful.

Refresh an excel file with connection

What's the best and easiest way to automate a refresh of an excel file in SharePoint that daily pulls the latest file in a folder and then refreshes a pivot table?

I don't know if what I've tried doesn't work because of privacy or am i actually missing something

40 emails, vague errors, file locations

We had SharePoint foisted on us last year, implemented by a team that is not IT. I'm not IT either but I'm very computer literate. I'm not sure if our company has just not input the right settings or what, but how is this system marketed as some kind of improvement?

For example, I am now staring at 40 emails received over 16 hours, regarding comments on 3 different word docs. Is this how it is supposed to be?

I can't imagine who could think that cluttering up inboxes like this is any kind of good idea. I don't think legal will like this. I doubt legal has been forced to use SharePoint.

Why is the file structure so hidden and obscure? There are a lot of SharePoint "sites" I guess you can call them, that we are supposed to submit documents to, but then we cannot access those folders or files in that location if we need to for example, replace a file. There's no way to navigate to those locations like you normally would be able to, which seriously disrupts work flow, because then you have to ask this guy (who never seems to understand your question to begin with), how to do the task that someone is asking you to do, when you don't have access other than through a link that opens up a word doc. Is my company just dumb? It could very well be the users are instituting processes that just do not work well.

I'm just like... WTF.... The future is bleak. Things take 10 times longer now. Tasks have ballooned.

Sharepoint Site Settings

Hello, I have a question. So I was trying out the privacy settings in Sharepoint. I made a new folder named test and edited the access to the site. I deleted the users and suddenly I lost my access to the entire thing site and not just the folder I was editing. My teammates lost theirs too. What should I do?

Sharepoint storage full despite low data amount

Hey, we have some problems with our sharepoint. For a year or two we need to add storage because it says it's at 100% capacity. We started to delete files, restructure our upload policy with our clients / team but nothing helps.

Now, I decided to check things in detail and I don't know whats happening.

We don't really use a lot of data.

In the sharepoint admin center it says:

1280GB used (1,38TB avaiable)

80180 data in on our sharepoint

But when I check the actual sharepoint there is just around 120GB of data (~10k docs).

I thought maybe it has something to do with the OneDrive Synch ... but I am not sure.

Any ideas?

Error: "We can't delete this site. This site is included in a compliance policy that's preventing its deletion. Try deleting the site again after excluding it from 2970fd52-42cd-4913-8ee8-e6da044376ba"

This is a GUID, right? Is there a way of finding out what policy this is? I've been through the instructions here on invalid policies, but the diagnostics say there are no invalid policies for my site url.

Prefill fields based on view

Hello!

I have a SharePoint list that my team uses as an action log. Action items are categorized using a lookup field that links to a list of projects. I have a view set up for each project that is filtered to show only action items associated with that project.

A team member may wish to add action items while looking at a view. When one goes to add a new action item, they have to select the correct project in the lookup field. If they don't, the record they just created will immediately disappear from the current view and they might end up making a duplicate record because the first one seemingly disappeared

Is it possible to set it up so that when an end user is looking at action items associated with project a, any new records they create automatically include project a in the lookup field?

What is your experience with Monday.com and clickup integration with Sharepoint for file-sharing.

Looking at trying to implement at a potential customer and want to know if the integration is worth it.

Effectively looking at using it for file sharing and potentially resolving issues with how users store files within onedrive. Additionally how does calander setup and outlook automation work.

From Fileshares to SharePoint Online: The Journey Nobody Asked For (sarcasm detected)

Ever seen this play out?

Big managers want to save money, so IT kills off on-prem fileshares and migrates everything to SharePoint Online. Sounds great on paper: no more file servers, all in the cloud, costs slashed.

But users? They’re used to fileshares and want to stick with File Explorer. Enter the OneDrive sync client—and the chaos begins. Sync issues, version conflicts, accidental overwrites. After months of frustration, someone asks the obvious: “Can’t we just have the old fileshare experience back?”

Cue someone in IT shouting: “We can do Azure Files!”

And now, the same IT folks who promised savings are explaining to management why they need another expensive solution—essentially rebuilding what they just got rid of, only now it’s in Azure.

Does this sound familiar, or is my company the only one riding this merry-go-round?

Timeline in sharepoint page

Hi! Hope you are doing great.

I am currently doing a page on SharePoint and I would like to add an interactive timeline. I managed to create one by using lists, but I cannot add it directly to be visible on my page. Is there any way to make a timeline on sharepoint?

Would appreciate some guidance.

Delegating the Management of Permissions

I have created a sharepoint site with subsites and I'm managing permissions via sharepoint security groups and it works perfectly (I'm sharepoint Admin).

I want to delegate permission management to my team without giving them access to the content of the sites and libraries (due to sensitive nature of the content) how I can do that?

So in each sub site, there is a document library and this document library have a security group managing access rights

So for example main site is (Contoso) then sub site (HR) , then there is three libraries under it (Confidential, Internal & restricted ) and each library has unique permissions (via sp security group) .

Can someone give me an advise, I tried to create a custom permission group (only for managing permissions ) , but with that still it shows they have no right to access the security group management !

SharePoint News Carousel Not Displaying Imagery

Hello! I just published a news post and then brought it to the front of our homepage carousel. Typically the carousel would display the header image of the news post. Today, it just shows a generic broken image. This is through chrome. In Edge, it displays fine. Any advice on how to fix?

Manager wants to use sub-sites

Relatively new to a large org. I have over 15 years of experience with SP. An IT lead (who was hired for their SP expertise) wants to use sub-sites vs hubs with associated sites. They seem concerned about “sprawl”. In typical SP fashion, the solution always depends on the needs, but in general, there isn’t much of a case for sub-sites now that we have hubs. And the ability to nest hubs within hubs.

I’m not certain they’ve worked with SPO…multiple comments indicate they’ve only worked with SP 2016 and older (ex. They wanted to configure a legacy Search Center, talked of using managed metadata for site navigation etc…). They clearly have a lot of SP experience but it seems to be concentrated to on-prem. Thoughts on approaching this topic delicately with someone above you?

Sharepoint Agents

I’m aware that Sharepoint agents can be used by anyone with a M365 Copilot license but I’ve also read there’s a pay-as-you-go model. I can’t find any documentation on how to get a Sharepoint site set up so anyone can use the agent (in a similar way as the M365 users). Can anyone point me t me in the right direction?

Use case would be: Frontline worker with F1 license has a Sharepoint homepage and I would like to get an agent grounded in all the documents on their site.

Delay in deleting files?

I have a power automate flow that loads a bunch of pdfs, almost 700, into a sharepoint folder. This flow is run every month. Before I trigger the flow, I delete all files in the sharepoint folder to make room for the files soon to be loaded. I wait like 15 minutes after I get the notification that all files have been deleted, and then I run the flow. however, some files do not get loaded into the sharepoint folder because there is a duplicate file. Is this because there is some "hidden" delay in sharepoint removing the files?

Mapping SharePoint as Network Drive

I have a SharePoint site with about 130GBs of data in a folder in a library. I, as well as 5 coworkers, need to by able to access these folders. However, we need to be able to access them through the File Explorer on our computers. I imagine I could do this my mapping a network drive, but when I do this, I get an error saying:

"Access Denied. Before opening files in this location, you must first add the web site to your trusted sites list, browse to the web site, and select the option to login automatically."

I have already done these. Why is stopping it from working?

Also, I do not want to use OneDrive Sync because I do not want these files to be downloaded onto my computer.
