Finished Ico last week and now Im ready for my next adventure: Shadow of the Colossus!
But which version do you recommend?
PS2, PS3, emulation, or Remake? I have no problems with older games soo Is any of the versions in 60fps? Does any have technical problems? Does the remake change a lot?
Thanks everybody :)
I know we're never gonna get a proper Shadow of the Colossus remaster or PC port now that there's a remake for Sony to port forward, but every few months I still end up imagining what it would be like to play the original Ueda aesthetic unshackled from the restraints of the PS2 or even PS3.
Here's a list of features I've come up with that I think could make the game shine on modern hardware while retaining that brilliant, original aesthetic:
Playing SotC emulated (particularly at high resolutions), the blemish that ages it immediately is the short draw distance. A slider to push the draw distance out to absurd distances to scale nicely 4k (or even higher) would be a godsend and, in my opinion, the single most significant enhancement an SotC remaster could include.
The lowest setting should feel basically identical to the og or at least PS3 game, but I can see this going up absurdly high for future proofing.
This one sorta speaks for itself. It would be nice to have the option to play SotC at uncapped framerate up to God knows how high.
That said, I think to maintain a certain feel, there should also be optional caps for 30 and 60 if folks prefer that.
Get the game opened up for absurdly high resolutions!
But, again for the sake of retro folks, I'd appreciate 1/4th, 1/9th, and 1/16th integer scaling options as well, which might look awfully nice with...
SotC would look so nice with some proper modern AA. DLAA is kinda the gold standard right now for high quality AA, but there are some good TAA solutions out there too. And for future proofing, Chuck some 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x SSAA options in there too.
Then again there are folks who just kinda hate AA - especially the temporal stuff - so a "no AA" option should also be included.
I think BluePoint's PS3 textures did an incredible job translating the look of the game to higher resolutions. But, as NightDive remasters have shown, it's so cool to be able to swap back and forth between the OG textures of a retro game.
I don't really understand how terrain texture tiling works, but as I understand it, algorithms exist now to make texture tiling look way less repetitive without the use of too many additional assets. I think SotC would benefit greatly from something like that, as the timing is another element that shows its age pretty immediately.
But, as with everything else though, I'd love a toggle to swap back to the original tiling as well.
Anyone else have wish list items for a thorough, NightDive-esque remaster of Shadow of the Colossus?
fantasy mixed with realism and those melancholic emotions. But if it's a game, I'd prefer something from the PS1 or PS2 era since my PC is busted, and my only option right now is playing on emulators on my phone
Spoiler just to be safe,
So I figure I should “complete” the game, and I’d like to end my current ps4 SotC phase with a “master” save, so I want all the time trial items, max health and stamina, and I’d like to take the 79 steps to enlightenment
So far, I’ve done a standard normal run and I’m working on the normal time attacks. Is this efficient? I know it will take several NG+s to get max health, and I know some of the coins are boss locked. Is this something I should do for hard mode? Are the time attack rewards universal? Or do I go to NG+? Is NG+ automatically hard mode?
TLDR: how do I need to play the game to end with a “master save” (max health and stamina, all (available) time attack rewards, and with the secret sword. (Ideally I’d like to do a run with the sword or Dormin, but I don’t know if you keep that post game)
I’m currently working on getting the platinum trophy for SOTC and I have 30/38 done. I’m doing the hard time attacks now. I’ve completed 12 of them, not in any order, so I could get the Cloth of Desperation. I’m very much struggling on the Pelagia one, though. It leaves no room for error and that is hard to accomplish when trying to swim around to its back. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this issue or if they had any advice on how best to go about it. Thanks
I just got the harpoon, but I did it by killing the first 2 colossi. Can I just keep killing the first guy and get the rewards that way? I guess I'll find out in a few minutes but I already wrote everything. Thanks
I just got the queen's sword for the plat and I was wondering if it's better than the sword of dormin.
I can’t get this game out of my head, I’m going to write a whole essay about this. Just you wait. (lol nvm I kinda already did)
I love how focused this game is. There are no enemies, there are ruins you can’t explore, mountain peaks you can’t climb, just a boy, his horse, and a need to succeed.
I wonder why the lands were forbidden
I wonder where the colossi came from
I wonder if the world got to heal after Dormin was vanquished
I wonder if that child was absolved of the curse or if he grew up to resent himself because of what he was born from.
I wonder if Wander, in his final moments gripping the stairs, was disgusted with what he had become or if he whispered a final goodbye to Mono
Did he know? Did he know his story was a tragedy? Did he know Dormin was using him? Or did Wander not care? Was Wander just a beast like the colossi? A small horned child scared to be alone?
None of these questions have answers, and as much as I hate it, I prefer it that way. The game was never about Us the Player, it was always about Wander and his story. We merely just started observing as soon as the eagle soars into the frame in that opening cutscene.
Wander’s actions are undeniably selfish throughout the game, and he sacrifices EVERYTHING for this girl. He doesn’t care who he hurts or what he has to kill, he steals a legendary sword and goes to the freaking FORBIDDEN LAND!? But at the same time, can you blame him? I’ve got 3 sisters, a mother, a grandmother, and a girlfriend, and I would make the exact same choice. Even if I knew I wouldn’t make it, I would do it in a heartbeat if I thought they would have a chance. That’s why I love Mono and how little about her we know. That also goes into what I said earlier about us just showing up at the end of their story. Wander ALREADY knows Mono and what happened to lead him to the forbidden land, he doesn’t have to restate it! We just showed up and started watching.
Anyways, I would still call this an anti-game. It genuinely lacks aspects that come with the genre, and although that plays to its strengths, it can be frustrating for players to not be rewarded for their effort to explore. You would expect secrets and easter eggs with this kind of game, but SotC rejects that philosophy. And as a new adult with money for the first time, playing games that are 6,15, and sometimes over 20 years old can have this odd, stale, nostalgic aura. Everything I’ve played is picked through. Every secret, every Easter egg, upgrade, unlockable, it’s already been found. I know I’ll never get that sense of magic playing a brand new game at launch or share rumors and cheat codes at recess, and that’s depressing. But SotC, from what I feel, how others think, and its consistent reviews, has almost seemed timeless. Its minimalist game design says, “Yes, we know who you are, and we know you’re wired to think this way, but that’s not what game this is. This is something different. Let me show you what art can be.” And that’s what I think has kept it so preserved. Its atmosphere alone has left me with this haunted feeling, and the score washes me with a grief so strong you’d think I’d also lost my Mono. Shadow of the Colossus has left a considerable impact on how I’ll view games, film, peotry, and probably my life. It captures this feeling so perfectly that I don't think there's even a word for it. This is one of those games that I’ll crawl back to time and time again and take a new meaning from each time. It is truly a piece of art.
If anyone has something to say, I’d love to hear it!
Question : I love the game but I as thinking wouldn’t that more sense to have them all available from the beginning (except 16 for final). It’s like they would live their life. Would break a bit the narrative of the voice and the « sword light colossus gps » What do you thing ?
Just another one, ueda pretty please
Like the title says. I can only imagine what the original was like when I came out. I found a guy on marketplace selling a ps2 though so there’s a chance! WHAT A GAME THOUGH who would have thought. I actually hate this game! This is an anti-game, playing this was like someone slapping me for gaming exploration instincts. Oh you see something really cool over there? Too bad, there’s nothing. I loved it. Granted that last boss was a nightmare with the controls and camera going crazy. And that end scene? And the credits??? I’m sorry??? I thought this was my sister??? How did I get so small? I was swindled! Actually I don’t think that’s true, I feel like I /knew/ that what I was doing was wrong, I mean listen to the music when you kill the colossi, that’s not a fanfare, that you killing a beast, a god, a spirit, yourself, it’s just tragic. I don’t think Wander knew that he would be the host for the ‘curse’ however. And where was that place that the woman and Agro went? Can I go there? Sorry for all the questions, I literally just beat the game.
Also, is it worth platinuming? Also also, I would love to hear what anyone has to say about this, so if you have a video or a paper about it please dm me or link the reply 🙏
What breed do you think Agro is? She seems massive compared to Wander, but she's not built like a draft horse.
Hello I would like to get a sigil tattoo for a memorial piece for my husband. He loved this game and I watched him play it for 12 years out of the corner of my eye from P2 to P4, It was his comfort game and I ended up falling in love with it too.
So my question is do all of the colossa have the same glowing sigil. Or does each one have a slightly different pattern? If so I need the horse, The dragon in the Sandy area and the salamander. Now I've tried to play the game myself to get my own answer but I just keep breaking down crying... So my other option was to just ask here. <3 Thank you for your time and all answers are welcomed.
Im assuming the door opened for Wander because of the sword, but how did Emon open it?
