Speech Pathology Grad Programs

I’m starting to research Masters programs for Speech pathology because I am considering a career change from non-profit program management. I do need to get all my prerequisites though because I have a BA in Art, 2008. 🥴

I’m located in Northern California and am wondering if anyone has advice for accelerated online or in person programs to check out?

I’ve seen a few options like the prep course at Cal State San Marcos which prepares you for the masters program they have. The prep seems great bc it is online but the masters is Hybrid and very far from where I live. That model seems pretty great though since it helps you easily get the pre reqs accomplished. Would love to hear any advice/thoughts.

Oh also…so many ads pop up for Emerson and NYU but I’m sure it’s super expensive…is that worth it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks!

wanting to become an slpa in florida after graduating

i’m graduating with a Bachelors in CSD in May and I taking a gap year before grad school. from my understanding to be an SLPA in florida you need 100 hours of fieldwork before applying for the license, is it possible to do those 100 hours before I graduate? or do I need to go in order and graduate, then do 100 hours then apply for the license? any insight of the process would be very very helpful!!

im studying CSD and I like it but Im not sure i want to commit to grad school yet and think that this would be the best way for me to figure that out. Also, my extracurriculars are not very strong and im going through some mental health challenges which i think would negatively effect the quality of my applications. So, any other advice about a gap year would be helpful!!

Resource binder

I wanted to create a resource binder for gradschool. I had found a website link in this Reddit but I lost it where someone created a free pdf with all the different sections such as phonetics, language milestones, anatomy and etc.I also saw a link to the instagram reel of the SLP who created it. I lost the link and can’t find it and would love to be able to find the PDF again. If anyone can share the link if they know what I’m talking about that would be wonderful! I was using it as a reference for my resource binder since it was free and have everything.

Essay Question

I’m currently applying to graduate programs and was curious to hear from others if it’s frowned upon by graduate schools (or if they’d even know) to reuse sections of my essays for multiple schools.

None of my essays are identical as all the prompts differ slightly between schools and I’ve tailored my responses to the specific school, but there are some parts of my essays that are the same between schools such as “what is your motivation for pursuing a career in the field of speech language pathology” or “explain how your identity has influenced your decision to pursue this career”, etc. My answers to questions like these are the same, no matter the school, so I’m wondering if it’s acceptable to reuse phrases and paragraphs or if I should be writing a unique essay for every school

Seeking advice as a disabled trans student

I recently graduated with my Bachelor's in CSD at Michigan State University. I wasn't accepted to any grad schools my first time applying so I have been on a gap year. I'm trying to really make sure I have the experience I need to get accepted somewhere, but I have been worried about different schools and their disability accomodation. I worry that I will decide to go to a specific school and there won't be the amount of support I need.

Some schools I'm considering: Northwestern Purdue Central Michigan University Grand Valley State University Boston University Wayne State Uni Eastern Michigan Uni

Can anyone give me advice on how to make sure my application is as good as possible, and clue me in a bit on what the support systems are like for chronically ill/ disabled and lgbt+ students at some of these places?

Can you ask for LOR before finishing the class?

For context, I’ll be taking my prerequisites while also applying for programs that start Fall 2025. Is it ok to ask the professor for a letter before getting my final grade? How could I go about it?

TIA

Advice for grad school clinics/classes

Hiii I officially start my first year of my MA program on Monday. I am slightly freaking out lol. I will be taking Voice Disorders, Acquired Neurogenic Disorders, and Early Intervention. As well as 2 clinics, one is a screening clinic and one is an articulation clinic for school-age children. The articulation clinic will be very fast paced. I will be seeing 8-10 clients for 15-20 minute sessions each. Any ideas for activities I could use in quick therapy sessions? Any advice or suggestions that helped you in grad school if you took these classes or had similar clinics? Thank you <333

Recommendation Letter Question

I'm applying to graduate programs right now, and I plan on asking 4-5 professors for recommendation letters so I have options to use on my application. However, is it bad if I use a recommendation from a non-CSD professor? I took over a year of German classes, and got to know my professor really well and she has agreed to write a letter for me. Would it be better for me to use a letter from a faculty member outside of my major who knows me well, or a letter from faculty members in major who may not know me as well? TIA!

what was your first clinic experience like?

TL;DR: I'm starting grad school next week, and I've been told that clinic begins in just two weeks. I'm feeling completely unprepared and unsure about what to expect, especially since it seems like such a short time to make any progress.

I'm looking for any insights from others about their first clinic experience—what it was like, what it involved/ what was expected of you, and any tips to help ease my anxiety.

Thanks :,,)

Late Transcript/Application Question

So I applied to CSUN’s online program for the Spring 2025 start and had the application turned in before the due date (6/25), but one of my transcripts never got sent. I‘m assuming it was some weird glitch or maybe I messed something up. Either way, I figured my application would be incomplete and I would be rejected because of it. However, today I got a text and voicemail asking me to still turn in that final transcript that was missing. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I’m curious if it is a good sign that they are still reaching out this late for me to turn it in? Or do they simply need all the paperwork turned in in order to formally reject me? lol

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

SLPA vs Post-Bacc

I'm about to start an online post-bac/second bachelor's program at USU for CSD (I majored in linguistics for my undergrad) so I don't have to take any additional coursework in grad school which I've understood is the more expensive option for people coming from a non-CSD background. I'm trying to figure out the fastest and most affordable way to do this, and now I'm considering just doing an SLPA program. I can't find much info about whether the SLPA would be able to fulfill all the requirements that the post-bac would fulfill, or if I would need to do additional coursework, OR if it's better to do the post-bac program and then try to get SLPA accreditation. So many options and I'm finding it kind of hard to find helpful information! Any tips, insight, or guidance is greatly appreciated!! For reference, I live in LA, CA, so I would likely work as an SLPA here, but hoping to go to grad school elsewhere.

Feeling clueless w/ finding post-bacc programs and leveling courses? Didn’t major in CSD in undergrad, want to do a masters.

I want to get my MS-SLP and didn’t major in CSD in undergrad. I have one psych course I can count towards ASHA IV A and that’s it. I think I need 8 courses total - 3 more college-level courses for IV A and then 5 more specialized courses in audiology, phonetics etc.

Does anyone with a nontraditional route have advice for finding courses/post-bacc programs that meet the ASHA standards and also actually prepare you for grad school? I likely won't be ready to apply to a masters until 2025 or 2026. Cost is not a factor for me and I would prefer in person with a cohort model over online. I will also likely need to take 3-4 weeks off for a surgery at some point. Any pros and cons of doing an accelerated summer program vs a yearlong program vs something else?

My apologies if these questions have been asked before, I'm having a hard time so far finding answers and would appreciate any advice.

If it’s relevant, I did most of college prior to 2019, took time off, graduated 2021. 3.2 GPA. I’ll have max one letter of reference from college if I’m lucky. I have been working in preschool and special education. I'm in Boston.

Ultimately I would love to be a school-based or pediatric SLP, working with kids / emergent communicators and high-tech AAC or gestalt language processors if possible.

Second Bachelors/Leveling or change major?

I am 15 classes away from graduating in my unrelated major, which is about $20k out of pocket, not including subsidized loans.

I can afford the $20k because I work full time, it’s just that 1 three credit course is like $2000 at ASU online.

I’m planning on taking my leveling classes with ENMU, which would be about $13k.

I’m just reluctant to completely change my major at the bachelors level because I’ve been trying to complete my bachelors for over 10 years now.

I was planning on working for a few years to save up for grad school and leveling classes, but finally getting out of this job.

I’m just wondering if anyone else was in this position too?

Or if I should just transfer to ENMU completely. I know their tuition is cheaper.

Praxis

I’m about to take the praxis for the second time, first time scored around 145-150 ish (it was months ago I blocked it out). I’m terribly nervous I won’t pass again and am getting discouraged about the possibility of having to try AGAIN. I’ve tried like every possibly study resource Fripty, Semantics, TrueLearn, MedSLP, notes from school, ETC. I’ve been working as a CF since about April/May so I know I’m a good clinician but HOW do I pass?!? I’m a terrible test taker in general too 😞

How to become online SLPA?

I currently live in NYC. And recently heard of SLPA I have a bachelors in Speech Therapy. But apparently NYC does not accept SLPA. So I was considering getting certified by another state and practice online in another state is this possible? I don't know if that made sense hopefully it did

SLP CLINICAL PLACEMENT

Next week I start my clinical placement for my masters in SLP. I’m extremely anxious and I feel like I’m under prepared although I’ve done all the work so there isn’t much I couldn’t done to better prepare myself….what should I expect? Do I just observe for the first while?

Path to work in the US as an SLP from Mexico.

Hello all,
I am an SLP from Mexico (F 25) with SLP Bachelors from Mexico. Due to my husband work we moved to the US, and I am having a hard time validating my SLP degree in the US. I am aware that in the US you need to do the SLP Masters to be able to work... but when comparing all the credits/courses/clinical work hours my degree covers almost all including the ones from the masters.

I was wondering if there is someone here that is or was in a similar situation. I'm not trying to avoid further study, but even when I went to the schools the only answer I get is that the SLP masters is for US citizens only (which I believe it's not true).
I applied for a couple of jobs and the employers were impressed with my CV, but I don't see clear path to get my ASHA certificate.

My type of visa is the TN dependent visa, so I am not eligible to work but allow me to study.

Thank you all!

I’m starting my program next week and I’m so nervous

I’m not even worried about the academics right now it’s just the social aspect that’s stressing me out, honestly. I’m not a particularly warm and fuzzy person (perfectly friendly and kind, but I’m also sarcastic and I have a healthy profanity vocabulary) and my undergrad classes were all full of live laugh love style women who just didn’t vibe with me apart from like 2 people. I have other friends and a great girlfriend who’s also in grad school, but I’m just starting to freak out a little bit because I was bullied a little when I was a kid and I know how much it sucks to feel alone/ostracized in a classroom. I’m a whole ass 24 year old adult and it feels so fucking stupid to be agonizing over whether my classmates will like me right now but I can’t seem to help it. Idk man if anyone else is starting at CSUN this fall throw me a lifeline or something, please.

Advice for eventually getting to SLP grad school!

I graduated in 2020 with a B.A. in Linguistics. I was going through a pretty tumultuous time and switched to Linguistics pretty late. I was thinking about SLP as I found it interesting and like working to make people's QoL better, but never figured out a clear career path before graduation. I ended up teaching English in Japan for a few years and will be coming back to the US soon. I want to pursue SLP now. The problem is, I don't have a good idea of the path I should be taking to get there.

  1. I don't have a relationship with any college professors, so I'm worried about rec letters. However, there are some teachers I taught with in Japan I am close with.

  2. I think it would be nice to get some shadowing/intern experience. Is it possible to do so without being in schooling at the moment?

My Ideal Timeline: Return to the US, work part-time and prepare for grad school for a year or so. Maybe do a supplemental program/post-bac if necessary? Attend grad school, then look for work.

Any and all advice or hearing your own experiences would be very helpful. Thank you in advance for your help!

Taking a Gap Year Before Reapplying to Grad School

I’m looking for some advice on how to make the most of my gap year before reapplying to grad schools. I applied last year but didn’t get into the programs I was really hoping for, and I think burnout from undergrad played a big part. Now, I want to use this time to recharge and strengthen my application. I had a 3.5 GPA, studied abroad last winter, and worked as a caregiver and a research assistant for a few months. I was also pretty involved in a lot of extracurriculars during school. I’m currently living in the NYC area and have a job lined up this fall as a Teacher’s Assistant for preschool kids with autism. Unfortunately, I can’t become an SLPA since New York doesn’t regulate those positions. Along with advice on improving my application, I’d also love tips on finding grants, scholarships, or other ways to help cover grad school costs. I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to boost my chances and handle the financial side of things.

Thanks so much for any advice or suggestions!

Anyone suggestions would be much appreciated. Finding an affordable online school is quite the challenge.

Our criteria below -under $50k(including out of state tuition, we live in Texas so New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas should be options) -online -preferably waives the GRE but are also open to ones that require it
