Prepping for Fall 2023

I was recently admitted into CSUFs program and I start in August, it’s been about a year and a half since I’ve taken a COMD course, and I need to revisit some concepts. Is there anything in specific that I should freshen up on so I’m prepared for fall semester and not completely lost? Thanks !!

URGENT! Decision deadline approaching soon!

Hi, guys! I have a B.S in Psychology, minor in Neuroscience. I'm a few classes away from my B.A. in Linguistics. However, the last class I need is only offered in Spring 2024, so I have to stay an extra semester. As such, I have plenty of room for an extra minor and I am close to a few!

I was hoping you guys could give some insight on which of these you think I should choose based on what would make me a good applicant for SLP programs.

The minors are: Cognitive Science, Disability Studies, and Spanish.

I put Spanish last because it would be the hardest to complete based on limited class offerings. However, if it is by far the best, I would be willing to stretch.

I know that any additional minor is a good thing (I am not upset with any of the choices), but I would like to stand out as a SLP candidate.

Thank you for any and all advice!!

Grad school

Hi everyone! I recently decided that going to grad school right away just doesn’t seem like the best option for me as undergrad has taken an emotional toll on me and I would like to work as an SLPA before i spend $$$ on a masters degree. Can anyone help me formulate a template to tell the grad school I am no longer able to attend that^^^?

Any ideas?

Hey. A year ago, I flunked out of grad school after completing 51 credits. I passed my clinical placements, but it was such a struggle that I had difficulty completing my coursework on time. I failed two courses due to not submitting my assignments by their deadlines. There is no chance of the university readmitting me and letting me finish the program.

I would appreciate any ideas about what I might do to enter the field. Is there another university that might accept more than a few of my courses?

Praxis test score

I am taking the Praxis this week, and just took a practice test. I got a raw score of 92/132. I am having trouble finding what the standard score of this would be/ figure out if I "passed". Can anyone give me information on the raw score that you got on the test recently (if its similar to mine) and if you passed? Is there a certain percentage I can compare it to (92/123 is about 70%), what percentage do you need on the Praxis to pass? Thanks in advance!

Help!!!

For anyone who attends University of Southern California, attended, or did an interview here, do you remember what type of interview questions they posed? Were they more diagnoses based? I.e. difference between apraxia and aphasia etc.

Best Study Resources?

Does anyone have any website, application, or other material recommendations to purchase or use as a first year slp grad student, for studying purposes? Could be informative materials or simply useful products you like to use while studying. Thank you in advance! :)

Help!!

Currently in grad school and have a pending misdemeanor charge (plead not guilty and in the process of getting it dismissed). Starting school externship soon and wanted to know if it'll affect my chances of getting placed and what I can do to ensure that I'll be able to keep my spot.

Not a bad person, just a person who made a huge mistake. /:

Independent Study vs. Stage Practicum

Hey everyone!

I am a 3rd year completing a Bachelor's in Communication Disorders and will be graduating in Winter 24.

I will be observing a speech pathologist in Fall 23 and I was thinking of doing an independent study throughout this volunteer placement. what are your thoughts? I am also doing a stage practicum in the Winter 24 and also have the opportunity to do an independent study. Do you think it is doable to do it at the same time?

Thanks! :)

Externship meetings

If you have a weekly obligatory externship meeting where you want to share truthful statements and be honest about how things are going, but have to sound professional and "share something" and you know your professor will pick everything apart, what are some good topics to bring up that leave the professor disarmed and unable to "punish" you for speaking out? When you can't discuss anything REAL going on in the field, I mean: how unfair things are, how horrible the working conditions are, how terribly we are treated, etc, what is left to discuss? I'm asking because I've attempted to bring up ever so slight truths (not even the whole truth) about what went on at a previous externship and not only was I treated as the problem for it, my professor turned on me, and betrayed my trust with things that I told her in confidence. I'm forced to work with the same professor this semester but I still have to share something. It's so awful. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

When to ask for LoR?

Is there a such thing as too early to ask?

I’ll be applying to schools this winter and starting grad school in Summer or Fall 2024. Is it too early to reach out?

How to balance a GA position and classes/clinicals?

Hi everyone. I was recently offered a Graduate Assistantship in the SLP department at my school. They said that it’s 13.5 hours a week for the fall and spring. I was wondering if people who have/had a GA could offer any advice with balancing everything? Would you say it’s worth it? I’d get money off my tuition plus some pay.

Working in D/HH?

Have you ever thought about getting your LSLS Cert AVT? Give me a buzz or message if you’re interested in learning about listening and spoken language outcomes for children who have hearing loss. [disclosure: bimodal-bilingual here who 100% ASL acquisition]

letter of recommendation!!

Hello everyone! One of my professors will be going on maternity leave this fall. They are able to write me a LOR by July. CSDCAS will be opened on July 13 for the 2023-2024 cycle. However, (this is the issue) some of my programs will not be available until October. Will the letter of recommendation still be submitted towards my selected programs? Thank you in advance!

Jobs to prepare as a psych BA

Hello!

Long story short, I decided that I was interested in being an SLP during my 4th year of undergrad. I took 4 prerequisites classes for the grad program during my last semester and am going to take the other 3 in the fall to prepare for grad school.

I graduated in spring with my bachelors in psychology. I am currently looking for a job that may get me a foot in the door and some experience in the SLP field, but I’m unsure of what my options even are because of my college major.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or know of anything I should look into? I would really like something where I will get the opportunity to learn!

TIA.

working while in grad school

Hi all! Just wanted to say, thank you all so much for the support during grad app season. I graduated with my BA & am going to my top grad school of choice this fall and am so excited! I currently work a student assistant job one day a week at a clinic. I applied to a music store job nearby my house and got invited to an interview on Friday. I have a good chance of being hired there and I plan on working there in the summer plus continuing my once a week clinic job.

I really would like to continue working in grad school so I have some extra cash flowing in. Is working two jobs (one very easy, and one that will be a bit more fast paced) doable in grad school? Thanks. :)

Anyone willing to take a look at my PS?

I have a rough draft of my personal statement for SLP grad school I created using general grad school advice, but am looking for input from others specifically in the field.

Please DM me if you’d be open to taking a look at it and letting me know your impressions!

Edit: Thanks all who reached out!!

behavior tech experience

is 10 months as a behavior technician and providing ABA therapy to kiddos with autism enough time/experience for grad school programs?

do grad programs care if you aren’t a registered behavior technician? i’m leaving my current company because they don’t want to provide the RBT certification and trainings and i need to prioritize school since i’m not getting the grades i’d like to … don’t know if i’m making the right decision

Working in grad school

I will be starting my first semester in grad school this summer. It sounds like most of my days off will be filled with clinical hours. What do people typically do for work in grad school?

Do you think I will make it in this field?

Brief Background

  • Grew up with learning disabilities.
  • 16-year age gap between my brother and I who has autism and was able to overcome speech delays with the help of therapists. I also have family experience with TBIs, dementia, and other disabilities. I feel that I am meant to help people with disabilities.
  • 2014/2015 got into a top-tier community college university for speech pathology.
  • Ultimately failed my first semester, primarily due to poverty and not being able to buy books, get to class, or eat.
  • I spent the next years from job to job, knowing I am missing something I am passionate about.

Current Situation

  • Recently attained a B.S. in psychology online and got a program GPA of 3.98.
  • I am now working as a part-time online ESL tutor and unpaid mental health research assistant.
  • I can survive because I helped my boyfriend start a business and buy a fixer-upper together.
  • I'm about to start working as a special education paraprofessional. I'm excited.

The Plan

  • I plan to work and pay off my current debt.
  • Then I will take leveling courses while working as a sub.
  • I'm not sure about taking the GRE because not all programs require it. Plus I have learning issues, so why not focus my study time on topics directly related to my career such as leveling courses, ASL, and research methods?
  • Do you think that if I score well on my prereqs admissions counselors will see my determination and give me a chance to prove I'm suited for this field?
  • My goal is ultimately to become a speech pathologist and researcher.
  • I'm also 28 and want to get married and start a family. Does that sound crazy to be working towards at the same time?
  • Most of the available SLP grad schools are an hour away from the house I own. Would I still be able to contribute to research as an online student at other schools?

Thank you!!

ASHA prereq frustrations

I'm in california.

I simply want to take a stats and physics class at a JC but these courses require prereqs at the JC!

I found a stats class at university of north dakota for $500ish a credit. Does anyone know of any other places I can take these classes?? On ASHA it says you can't take these from massive online programs... I'm guessing they mean places like university of phoenix?

My program won't let me use a CLEP exam to pass out of these prereqs :(.

Can someone give me some advice please?

I'm transferring from my community college to a public in-state university and going to major in Communication Disorders. I know getting into grad school is VERY competitive! As a result, I need to focus on my GPA, GRE Scores, volunteer and SLP observation hours. I also want to work in a healthcare setting as an SLP.

Since this is my 1st semester transferring in after taking a gap year from my community college due to personal life experiences, what advice do you have for a student wanting to go into this field and get into grad school? Do you also have any advice for my 1st semester as a major in Communication Disorders? I'm taking 16-19 credits. (If I do 16 credits, I can have my Fridays off.) I'm going to take: Scope of Practice: SLP and Audiology, a Statistics course, a transfer course (1 credit), Early Speech and Language Development, Nature/Language for SLP, Child Psychology and/or Phonetics. I appreciate it everyone! :)

Anxiety about clinic

Hi guys. I started my grad classes and clinic this week and I’m dreading my sessions this week. I wasn’t nervous going into my first session with my client, but after it finished I have just been so anxious ever since. My supervisor left me positive feedback but I just feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. It felt like I blacked out during the session and then came back to life once it was over. Send help 😅

Teaching or SLP

Hi everyone!

I (F23) just graduated with an undergraduate Bachelor's Degree majoring in French and Psychology from Laurier (Ontario). I got accepted to teacher's college to teach grades 4-10 at Laurier which starts Sept, 2023. I know French jobs are high demand so getting a job wouldn't be a problem. I've also lived in Quebec for ten years so I feel very comfortable with my French. The problem is, I am worried I will get overstimulated teaching, I know I love helping others and I've alway wanted to work in a field where I get to, but I also am worried that it won't be a sustainable job for me as I get distracted easily so knowing 30 faces will constantly be watching me intimidates me. The other thing is your constantly the centre of attention and we all have days off, having to put an act on in front of 30 plus students also worries me. The pay is average , but I am also a pretty simple person so that is manageable for me. I also am the type that wants to finish work once I clock out. I am ok to work longer hours, but I would rather getting everything done within 10/11 hours than go home, I'm worried I'll constantly be anxious about lesson planning and how much time that will take once I go home after teaching. On the other hand, I am a very optimistic, enthusiastic individual and know I could be a good teacher, but watching all thee burn out videos of teachers quitting also scares me. I've been considering doing Speech-Language Pathology instead as it seems more one on one focused, which I like, there's one case to focus on, I can give my full-attention and my 100% to that patient. I still get to help others, which is extremely rewarding for me. The pay is better. I also have an advantage since I am bilingual. I just don't know what my steps would be or where to apply for SLP. I know it extremely competitive, and witch my degree major I am not sure if that options is possible for me. Has anyone entered SLP with a non-science major or as a mature student? Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Best note-taking apps for iPads

Hey everyone! I’m curious if anyone has found a note-taking app they enjoy on iPad? I’m trying to find one that will allow you to type or write on PowerPoints and organize them by class ideally.

financial aid options

Hi guys!

I was hoping to get some advice and opinions on financial aid options and loan opinions to pay for the remaining balance. I know there is the grad plus loan and a few other options but I was wondering if y’all had some input on what the best options are. I hope you all continue to succeed! Thank you
