This is a discussion board for fantasy robot combat tournaments on reddit. All discussion and RPs will go here.
Fantasy robot combat is a type of RPG in which participants enter robots they have imagined into a tournament to compete with others' creations! This subreddit hosted the Hammerfall tournament in the fall of 2015 and the Pressure Drop tournament in the summer of 2016. The Reckoning: Evolution tournament is currently running, and REDDIT is accepting entries!
TinkerCAD is a free and simple to use CAD program that is entirely online. It is mostly based on putting together different shapes, but certain shapes (like wedges) might feel a bit unintuitive to put together. See the work of CharlesTheMad (Madman on the ARC forums) and ForceandFury (the Monsterworks) for examples.
Sketchup is another free and simple to use CAD program. The most recent version is online only, but Sketchup 2017 is still available for download for Windows and Mac (as is Sketchup 2018 Pro.) It allows for more freedom when it comes to designing shapes than TinkerCAD, and is still relatively user friendly. See the work of Part-Time-Unicorn (The_Angry_Goat) and Hooray for Lexan for examples.
There's an active community of fantasy robot players in the ARC forums.

I know this place is basically dead but hey might as well join in. We’ll go read only on monday!
So, we heard you like Battlebots…
Or maybe it was Robot Wars, King of Bots, Robogames, Robotica, or something else that got you started. Whatever it was that first ‘hooked’ you, it’s safe to say that if you’re on this subreddit, you’re a fan! And who among us hasn’t had ideas for battlebots of our own? Who hasn’t wondered if this weapon would work or if that tactic could be a winner?
Of course, testing those ideas out in real life is pretty expensive and requires a time commitment and expertise that few of us have. That’s where ARC comes in. We’re a fantasy robotic combat league (sound nerdy? It is), and we’ve been around basically since Battlebots was first on TV, or so I’ve heard. Yours truly was... kind of still a kid. Alright, so, how does this fantasy thing work? Our formula is simple:
Step One: Create a robot in some sort of CAD program (there are a lot of simple ones available for free online, like SketchUp and TinkerCAD, and more advanced ones like Rhino, Inventor, Fusion 360, and others that you can usually get through a university subscription or a one-time purchase). Hell, you can even use MS Paint. If you’re just that bad at drawing, though, there’s a good chance that someone more experienced will be able to help you out if you post a request.
Step Two: Give your bot stats. Each bot is allowed a maximum of thirty points divided as you see fit between five categories: speed, traction, torque, weapon, and armor. More on that later.
Step Three: Enter an event and compete against other robots by posting your strategy before each fight. A community panel reviews the designs, stats, and strategies, and determines a winner, with one member chosen to post a fun writeup of the fight roughly in the mold of Battlebots Review (if they have a sense of humor and enough caffeine in their system).
The Tournament
So that brings us to the actual event: ARC Reddit Tournament… In Theory, or REDDIT, for short. Basically, it’s a text and graphics version of what shows like Battlebots Robot Wars, and King of Bots do. All of those shows have great arenas, but we’ll be using the S5 Battlebots arena (NO SHELF!). Anyways, here are the numbers:
One: Our entry field is capped at 8 bots (maybe more if more interest comes through), but we’re not doing single elimination (lose and you’re out) or a fight card format like the latest season of Battlebots.
Two: Instead, entrants will be divided into four groups of six and will face off in a round robin, kind of like the FIFA World Cup.
Three: The top three from each group (12 in total) will move on to the knockout phase, where single elimination will apply.
The Rules
Writers
Let me know if you are also interested in writing fight results. I'd like at least 2-3 others to assist with writing. Basically, if I don't have writers for this, all but one 'highlighted' fight out of that week's matches will have a full writeup for it. I simply don't have time to write everything, myself (plus, I'm competing in this, as well).
Have fun and get creative on your designs below to compete in this event :)

###The Tournament
So that brings us to the actual event: Robotic Excellence in Destruction and Domination… In Theory, or REDDIT, for short. Basically, it’s a text and graphics version of what shows like Battlebots Robot Wars, and King of Bots do. All of those shows have great arenas, but we’ll be using the S5 Battlebots arena (NO SHELF!). Anyways, here are the numbers:
One: Our entry field is capped at 24 bots, but we’re not doing single elimination (lose and you’re out) or a fight card format like the latest season of Battlebots.

###Schedule
Signups are open as of today, December 26, 2021 and have been extended to Thursday, 1/13/22 11:59 PM EST. This is when you should enter your bot. If you don’t like how your first entry stacks up, have a new idea, or just think that you can do better, you’ll be allowed to switch entries once. After that, you’re locked in.
Immediately after, the tournament will start on Sunday, January 9th. The brackets, matchups, and writing assignments will be posted in an announcement on RpRoomFBB.
For each fight, you'll have about one week to post your strategy. You can make the thread or reply to your opponent if they make the thread. To keep this simple, your strategy should be a single post only and other comments should be kept in the bracket and prediction threads. Your strategies will always be due by the Saturday of that week at 11:59 PM EST unless a delay or exception is announced.

###In Conclusion...
Well, that’s the entire ruleset for this thing. Uh…thorough, isn’t it? Of course, that doesn’t mean that it can cover everything. There’s always some smartass tryhard genius or real creative thinker out there who comes up with something outside of what the rules directly cover, so if you’ve got an idea like that, don’t hesitate to ask one of the senior staff or myself. There’s a solid 75% chance that we won’t bite your head off and your design will be approved, maybe with a few alterations or caveats. If it isn’t, don’t get discouraged. There was probably a good reason for it. We try to keep designs at least somewhat realistic and disallow robots that could be seen as exploiting loopholes or grey areas in the rules. I doubt that many of you will run up against that, though, so here’s to more Battlebots and an awesome season of both real life and fantasy roboteering!
Ok so I want to enter a bot and I want to know if you can use lego

Ok, I need to utilize my quickness & be aggressive right from the start as I need to get under Greenwar early as possible, don’t charge right at the front head on; instead get around him and attack the sides.
I feel that Greenwar may struggle on turning to try and keep up with Counter Attack potentially leading to Greenwar to gyro due to his traction being quite low.
I want to avoid meeting the front of Greenwar so bob and weave a little and line up an attack.
If this is the case, I will pounce and line up an attack to get right under Greenwar’s side panels and flip him over. Leave my lifter mid-raised once I flip him and not allow Greenwar to freely self-right whilst I push.
Slam him against the arena walls or the screws to earn some points. I don’t want to give Greenwar any room to recover from these situations. Keep him upside down in most of the fight as much as possible.
Good luck and may the best bot win. :)

The Numbers:
Know Disintegrations: 5/4/2/12/7
Failure Duplicator: 6/4/1/13 (-1 each)/5
Know Disintegrations strategy:
Welp, I’m taking on Failure Duplicator, which is very much not a fun matchup for me. My biggest threat is that horizontal spinner, since I’m fairly certain it has the reach advantage over me, and would hit the support structure around the weapon, rather than be weapon on weapon.
Because of this, I’m going to be trying to get around to the sides of Failure Duplicator and strike at its relatively weak armour. Failing that, I will target the sides of the drum spinner, trying to sheer its supports and render it useless. A couple of good hits to the corners anywhere on it should allow me to rip in and do some serious damage, exposing the wheels to further follow up strikes..
My biggest advantage in this fight is that his weapons have a slower spinup that I do due to their nature of running 2 spinners from one set of motors. Because of that I will be driving to try and ensure that my first hit gets there just as I get up to full spinning speed, which is roughly 3 seconds.

Good Luck
Counter Attack: (DISC CONFIG) Speed: 7 Traction: 5 Torque: 2 Weapon: 6 (Disc 5/ Lifter 1) Armour: 11
Verdigris (Flippity floppity one power flippers are my property) Speed: 9 | Traction: 8 | Torque: 2 | Weapon: 2 (1/1/1/1 flippers) | Armour: 9 | Default config - hinged toothed wedge
Alright, Verdigris is omni-wheel driven so I'll need to be careful on how I approach him. His omniwheels are exposed so that's the only option I can take in trying to create damage on the omniwheels, or having a punt at the sides of Verdigris.
I'll want to come right on the attack from the start and apply some pressure to Verdigris early on, and try to get him near the arena walls. If I'm about to be angled, reverse away and get some space.
I'll need to keep on moving around and try to prevent Verdigris from having a chance to flip me over.
If I'm flipped over, I can self right.
GL and may the best robot win :)
Boomslang: Speed 7 Traction 6 Torque 3 Weapon 3 Armor 11 (+2 for wedge and forks)
Me (Bernard: The Brutal Basilisk): Speed 5 Traction 4 Torque 2 Weapon 10 Armor 8 (+1 for fork and wedge)
This seems like a good matchup for me, I assume Boonslang will box rush me. I need to win this, If I don’t my top 8 chances are finished.
I’ll equip my Drisk
This is probably the least I’ve written for an RP
Good luck to Boomslang.

Tldr: Spray napalm on the Gambian rice farmers.
I can NOT lose this.
If I fall to a bad lose record, my chances of making the tournament are LOW
My strategy for him is to attack the sides, stay aggressive, control the fight, get my weapon away from his clamper, dont let him get ANY chance on me.
He’s also very fast and durable, so I need to be careful approaching him if I have any chance of winning.
I don’t just have to win this, I have to win in style as well.

Cape Horn does not have the mobility or weaponry to deal with me. I am going to exploit that with a quickly accelerated charge at his wheels, something his design makes hard to respond to.
With wedge under, those large, juicy, VULNERABLE wheels are heading straight towards the nearest hazard. Big, rubbery, and definitely susceptible to damage. Into the closest torture device they are fed.
Rinse and repeat until he is immobilized.

Going up against another spinner oh boy
Im not going to perform a box rush. I want him to come to me. I then want to angle in on his blade and pick him up on my wedge. Then toss him under the pulverizer until im told to release.
Once thats done give him so breathing space and start off again. try to get to his back but be careful of him sniping a wheel so when im circling him I want to back up to throw him off guard. Scoop him up again and this time toss him into the screws. Now because you're starting to think this is BETA vs RotatoR, I will finally start flipping him from now on. if I can toss him under the pulverizers and if I can, chuck him out of the arena
Best of luck Grimm :)

Man I keep forgetting how cool mecanums are. Gonna have to enter a mecanum wheeled bot at some point
Good Luck
Sorry I've been dead. School does that.
Anyway now for the rp
!I will stop any attempt at a box rush by strafing. I will keep avoiding any attempt to run at me by strafing and once I do get up to speed I will start aiming for the back corners or the wedge corners hoping to tear them off. If I do get clamped I will go into a survival mode trying to use any movement to escape. Cobra will likely be using their anti horizontal but I need to make sure I hit in untangled places so I don't get popped into the air. The design of their wedge gives me a better shot of escaping due to them not having something to get under me. If I can I will try to attack the exposed wheels, but if I do get a chance to I will Try to take off the cobras head If its down dealing some good damage. !<
Thanks for reading GLHF!
My Stat’s 5/4/2/10 (+4) (7/7)/8
Counter Attack’s Stat’s 7/5/2/6/11
This is a tough matchup, this type of bot is probably the worst bot Bernard could Face due to how well rounded they are, but fingers crossed.
I’ll equip my Drisk
I’m guessing they are going to use the disc, and drive defensively, since they have -2 traction and have only been defensive so far.
Good Luck, I hope when I lose it will be via physics failing me (or in a way me failing physics)
Go undercutter first, spin clockwise.
9 weapon armor should be enough to survive several hits.
I can hit the bottom of the wedge safely, hit it as far towards MY left as i can, if RNG is in my favor car horn will get thrown away towards my right, his very exposed wheel will be in direct collision course with my spinner for an EZ wheel snipe. Repeat this until it works.
Once ape corn is only in one wheel i should be able to easily snipe the chasis or the other wheel and win.
So, facing last weeks fighter in a main event, is kinda scary, but I’m not scared this time.
My strategy is to attack anywhere but the front, I need to be aggressive and control the fight as much as I can possibly do.
He can’t grapple me from the sides. So that’s where I’m mostly gonna strike, but I’m gonna do the less attacking on the back, since he can move his grappler there. And I might get flipped.
I can self right, but it ain’t really easy.
So thats really what I’m gonna do in this fight. But there’s something else I should note
I know that he is pretty fast. So I need to be careful approaching him. But I feel like this fight should go to me in the end.
