r/starwars_model_senate is a new subreddit dedicated to simulating the Star Wars Galactic Senate in the year following the Naboo invasion. The Galaxy is in chaos as the Outer Rim feels increasingly disconnected from the Core Worlds, and Separatist factions rise up, alongside Corporations pushing for expanded rights and a break from the authority of Coruscant and the Chancellor. We are currently heading towards our 1st election, which looks to be strongly contested by multiple different factions and corporations vying for power and the ultimate goal of the Chancellorship!

We have become essentially an internet country and are currently seeking more communities like us to ally with. We’ve been through a lot this last year, but most recently discovered r/RepublicOfReddit. How exactly does did this work? Where did it go wrong? Can it be revived? So many questions.

Who would win?

This subreddit looks really cool, fun and interesting. Unfortunately I'm a bit confused on how it works and what exactly is done. If anyone could help me I would be happy to become an active community member

It's been a couple of years since I eagerly joined the RepublicOf subreddits in anticipation of a better and more intelligent Reddit. But in that time all that seems to have happened is worse/more immature subreddits have reached default, bringing in an even more immature userbase.

Did everyone just move over to Hacker News, or have people just given up contributing much anymore?

There are still a few good subreddits with strong moderation teams (/r/askhistory for one). But ultimately it seems that areas such as news and gaming both of which had RepublicOf equivalents, just really didn't take off.

/r/republicofgaming - last updated 8 months ago, /r/republicofnews - seems to get updated once or twice a month. I think the only still active one is /r/republicofmusic which I am still subscribed to, but just doesn't seem to get enough discussion going, usually at most 1 or 2 comments and can sometimes go over a week between posts.

What could've worked differently? Was there a time this could've worked better, or was it doomed from the start?

At one point I tried to actively create my own subs that had heavy moderation, and tried to keep only higher quality content, and those too just never caught traction. I'd maybe get a few hundred people joining in protest as a "I quit this default subreddit as the content is too low", but they never contributed, and they never interacted with my own contributions when I was actively submitting to them.

Is there any hope of a system like this within Reddit, is there any alternate way to get a better quality Reddit experience? Or is it simply a job of "put up with the lower quality stuff" and unsubscribe to as many popular subs as possible?

This is the main subreddit of the republic but whoever discovers it doesn't see what this subreddit is about. The content is hidden in the sidebar, the 'View the Entire Network' button has the same grey as everything else.

My suggestion: At least add a sticky post to the top with a link to the multi-reddit.

I came here from random. I feel like I just walked into a bunch of old people having tea together and talking about politics. So what is your goal as a subreddit? Are you competing against another party, your the republic but is there another group of subreddits who are the Communist? Is this sort of a simulation of society in the Internet?

Hi everyone. I just stumbled upon this "Republic Network" reddit and I have a few questions:

1. What exactly is this group of Reddits about, and how does it differ from other Reddits? Is it supposed to be more democratically-run?

2. What are the rules and core values (if any) to this network?

3. What is the process for joining?

Here is the comment responsible for the bump in traffic. Here is the /r/TheoryOfReddit post discussing this topic, which includes traffic stats from the event. I believe this is the first time any Republic subreddit has received front-page attention.

Do you think this is a good thing? Could this attention help breathe new life into the Republic Network?

After browsing around a little bit in the republic I got curious about the concept and would like to see how it works out. However, I did not find a lot of content that interested me. And this is what reddit is about and the republic of reddit should be about.

I do not want a discussion about the quality or vividness of the content in the republic in this thread. But I do think that a bit of humorous self reflection on the content would be healthy for the republic.

My suggestion is to introduce a subreddit for satire on the republic of reddit, a cousin of r/circlejerk. Of course it should follow the guidelines of reddits in the republic, especially rule 7 of the republiquette: "Do not post submissions solely to draw negative attention to another redditor or their behavior" [emphasis mine]. It should be possible to draw negative attention on the behavior of another redditor or part of the community with constructive intentions.

Would such a subreddit be appreciated in this community?

P.S: My first submission would be: "Hey fellow republicans, look what I found on the onion!"

After being involved with the Republic since its inception nearly a year ago, I've decided it is time for me to step down and move on.

These really are wonderful, high-quality subreddits. It's a shame that more of mainstream reddit wasn't willing to give us a chance.

I see that this sub reddit (and affiliates) in particular is very different is there a process to become part of the sub and to cast votes similar to citizenship or do I simply subscribe to become part of the community?

How's this project going?

I have not positively contributed to the Republic in many moons, and I feel that I have not been and am no longer fit nor deserve to serve as a moderator. Other commitments, both on reddit and "IRL" have led me to this decision. RoR is a great experiment that I hope to see succeed.

I have removed myself from moderator in RoPics and RoModeration, and posted in RoModeration accordingly.

Sidenote: the title is based upon Richard Nixon's resignation from President.

Since the early phases of RoPolitics the basic local rules have relatively gone unchanged. There was a couple of small revisions, but for the most part the rules as they stand today are the same as they have always been.

The only real change that I've seen is the addition to the Tag Rule where there are a list of [tags] that the moderators would liked used in RoPolitics. Tags include, [comment] [feature] and [data/analysis].

For the most part this rule goes unenforced. I, personally, am pretty committed to using the [comment] tag, but I'll lapse and leave it off from time to time, or I'll be unsure which tag to use and just submit the link without one.

To be honest, I really like the rule and I think it helps to sort of know what I am getting into when choosing which links to read and vote on. I even think that perhaps a few more tags are needed.

I have a couple in mind that might work out pretty well. The first is the [news] tag for articles about current political events. Since RoNews added a refined on-topic statement there has been some discrepancy about what is and is not appropriate in terms of political news. The community there doesn't really upvote political articles and those types of post are usually reported. Should the RoPolitics community prefer links that focus primarily on political policy then maybe a [news] tag is unneeded. However, a lot of information that is important to the subject of politics--especially current events--is presented in news articles. Keep in mind that this would also include links about political candidates.

The other tag I thought would be useful is the [election] tag which would tie in events about the upcoming presidential election. Unless, of course, this is something that the community would rather not encourage at all.

The issue with the tags is that since they are a bit confusing I would hate to punish someone for using a tag incorrectly or leaving off a tag because they are simply unsure if it needed one. So what I propose is that if a post is removed for violating the [tag] rule then it doesn't count against user's overall removal count. That way, the removal is simply a learning process for the users and the post can go back up with the proper tag(s). No harm, no foul.

If the community is going to have a tag rule, it might as well be used right? So what does everyone else think? How do you feel about the [tag] rule and it's benefit to the community?

When we first started this project, the vague idea was to mimic the default subreddits, but with a few key twists - no rehosted images or image macros, approved submitters only, and democratic moderator elections. We currently have nine subreddits in the network; there are 20 default subreddits in total. Is it time to add some more subreddits to the network? If so, which ones?

These are the default subreddits that do not yet have a Republic counterpart:

Obviously some of them would not be a good fit (such as /r/AdviceAnimals and /r/aww). What of others such as /r/AskReddit, /r/Science, /r/bestof, etc? Do you think any of those could have a successful Republic counterpart at this time? If so, what rules would you implement to set them apart from their larger default cousins?

I've seen recent summary comments made by the autotldr bot receive multiple reports in a few Republic subreddits. I don't think it breaks any existing rules, but it is clearly an unwelcome influence on the community.

Are bots like this, and bots in general, welcome in the Republic network?

For many months the Republic of Science has been set to private. Thanks to BottleCap42 it is now available and we are attempting to affiliate with the Republic in just under a month from now.

Since the open beta of the Republic of Reddit Network I have seen several calls from users who were interested in a networked subreddit of this sort. So I would like to invite anyone interested in science news and information to subscribe and request approved submitter status.

I would also like the ask the RoReddit community if they have any ideas or suggestions for this subreddit.

What sort of posts would you like to see us encourage? What sort of posts would you like to see us avoid? Should we allow self posts? What advice do you have for the current mods establishing this community? Etc.

The Reddit science community over at r/science is very active and that subreddit is quite large. From my experience it is a good place for news, but it is plagued my some of the problems seen by other large and default subreddits--namely bias, sensationalism, and the users have no say in who mods the community or the rules they are subjected to. So I certainly think RoScience has a lot of potential and stands to be a place that gives users the ultimate say in things.

I think that the Republic of Reddit Network is poised to increase in size. In fact, I think that a more diverse collection of networked subreddits might help increase the over all numbers across all the communities.

A couple of the subreddits I would like to see included here are r/RepublicofLGBTQ and r/RepublicOfScience.

The latter is what I would like to focus on.

Currently, r/Science is generally good at keeping the right kind of content on their front page so a Republic counter part would really only serve to allow users the option of selecting their mods and ensuring beyond a shadow of a doubt that sensationalism and memes don't hit the front page.

From what I see the biggest problem with r/Science is the comments. This post in r/TheoryofReddit will give you some more context on this issue. Of course, we all know that the Republic does very little to control the quality of comments, but the users (from what I've seen) are quick to downvote off topic comments in order to foster and promote more intelligent discussion.

If something like r/RepublicOfScience were brought into the Republic do you feel the user base alone would be able to curve the type of issues that persist in r/Science?

Would anyone be interested in eventually brining in a subreddit of this type?

Also, on a related note, does anyone know who controls /r/RepublicOfScience? When I go there it shows up as "forbidden."

The sub was nabbed by an inactive squatter throw away jerk face. Man I hate squatters. Anyway, if granted, I would like to immediately bring it into the network and hopefully put an end to mod drama within that community. r/ainbows is an established alternative to r/lgbt, I know, but I would still like to see the republic's charter be used to help their community.

Since the response in the suggestion thread was unanimously positive, I'm putting the following amendment to our charter up for vote:

"In the event that the number of potential moderators nominated before the deadline is equal to or less than the number of slots open, the election shall be forgone and those nominated shall assume their duties immediately."

Voting ends January 20th. Remember, (/yes) means "yes", (/no) means "no", and (/abstain) means "I don't care" (just put a little [] before them, so they show up properly).

I would like to officially suggest the following addition to the charter:

"In the event that the number of potential moderators nominated before the deadline is equal to the number of slots open, the election shall be forgone and those nominated shall assume their duties immediately."

Seeing as how there are five open positions, and only five approved submitters were nominated, I'm not really sure how to proceed at this point. We didn't address the possibility that there might not be more users nominated than there are open moderator spots. I'm going to satisfy the language in the charter and hold this vote open for the next seven days, but I think at this point it's safe to say that the users you see on the list above you will be the moderation staff in this subreddit for the next six months.

Note: There was a sixth user nominated, bananasncornbread, but that account has not been active for at least three months, and as such is not eligible to become an approved submitter here, nor a moderator.

Many large subreddits will be blacking out to bring attention to SOPA. How would the Republic community feel about this? (It would need a vote to pass, probably)

EDIT: Okay, so it's clear that some of the commenters so far think that this would mainly be preaching to the choir, so to speak. Let me clarify a bit: the point of the blackout is not so much for awareness as it is for activity. Most people are aware that such a bill exists, but maybe not fully cognizant of the repercussions; the blackout is meant to make these repercussions a reality, at least for a day. The RoR network would participate because we presumably value the freedom of information, something many say SOPA would limit. I'll leave the comments open for another day or two, then bring it to a vote once the comments wind down.
