I'm trying to compose for a project that's really close to my heart. We're talking about the late 70's and early 80's, and Kate Bush's work in particular.
I've linked two videos of the same title. I can't figure out how it was composed.
Was the first step the melody or the chords?
What does it mean for the rest of my composition to start with one or the other?
What's the relationship between the intervals of the verses and those of the chorus?
How could I manage (with a lot of work, I admit) to compose something so deep and touching in this style (or any Kate styles song??
Are there any identifiable compositional techniques I could learn from this?
I really want to learn to compose in this sense.
If Anyone can help me with that i would grateful forever!
We're delighted to share our new album with y'all: Rêves.
"It’s gripping stuff. It lays its musical hands on you, grabs your attention and, like a jealous lover, holds you until it decides it is done with you. Absolutely fantastic." — Rob Fisher, The Progressive Aspect. Full article here.
(Read on below.)
"With their seventh album, Rêves, the progressive rock duo, Tempus Cucumis, exhibited how innovation can drive classic rock forward, not as a separation of what came before, but a sublime continuum you can follow and lose yourself within." — Amelia Vandergast, A&R. Full article here.

March 1 my fourth album is coming out. My style is prog while flirting with other styles. Originally I am a guitarist but as a music producer I blend everything together at an equal level. My new album features nine collaboraters of which seven come from Ukraine. I post my linktree here so you can have a look at the website and hear some music. I am on Bandcamp, Spotify and Apple Music and you can get physical cd’s too.
Made a song regarding the recent conflicts around the globe outlining the mentality of men who are sent of to war, just a message of hope and the need to stop political agendas guiding our lives and sending us to war forcibly when all we do is die for a cause that we don't believe in.
Anyways here it is

I just published an analysis of the coda from Zappa's "Echidna's Arf"
I mainly discuss how Zappa uses polymeter in some versions of tune, and how this differs from later versions of the tune, examining how the rhythm section interacts with the melody. I do also discuss the harmony and melody construction a little, too.
If anyone has any additional thoughts or anything they've noticed, please let me know!

Watching Jordan Rudess hadle this situation with a combination of both looks like the way to go. But I get lost when I try that. Memorization seems to be the best way to go, and works for me- but takes hours and hours listening to the tune. Learning and playing Close to the Edge wasn't so bad because we've all heard it for years.
How do you folks handle epic prog tunes?
