I was lucky enough to cross a bunch of the bucket list. My favorite had to be Haken, I'm an absolute sucker for evening with shows and full album playthroughs. Honorable mentions were caligulas horse, tool (2x at msg) and knocked loose (not prog but the only other band besides Meshuggah to make me audibly say "holy fuck" in real time)
Obviously a few big tours just getting started or finishing up like Opeth, TDH, AAL but curious what others have really liked so far this past year
My friends just released a music video!
FFO: Celestial, Pelican, Wolves in the Throne Room
Wanted to shout out this track since it didn't make it onto their full-length album!
I hate digital music.
It may look like rage bait, but please read my writing without judgment first.
What we call digital music has actually been in our lives for a while and seems like a good thing. People have quicker access to music, it’s definitely cheaper, discovering new songs is easier, and so on… but I think the downsides outweigh the benefits, and we need to return to the older analog music.
So why:
1- The Spiritual Value of Music It has become difficult to form an emotional connection with the pieces we listen to, or the songs feel trivial. Think about it: a song you download or add to your playlist may get played once or twice, and then you might forget it even exists. But with analog albums you own, maybe you spent months trying to find that album, and if you didn’t like it the first time, you might listen to it a second, maybe third or fourth time – and in that fourth listen, you might experience something totally different from the first three.
2- Overall Quality of Music Nowadays, anyone can make music. People with no close relationship with music might grab a beat from the internet, work on it simply, and release it as an “album.” Things like this make it harder for real music to stand out and prevent the general public from reaching quality music. If accessing music or creating it were harder, people wouldn’t produce music with so little effort. Maybe album covers don’t even matter anymore, but people used to look at those covers, contemplate them, and maybe even choose to buy or enjoy an album based on the cover.
3- Artist Income The digital music market controls the artists. Yes, analog music is much more expensive, but artists receive the reward for their work in return. And, as I mentioned in the previous point, its cost adds value to it. Right now, if an artist isn’t streamed millions of times, it’s difficult for them to make a living. For an artist to create, they need to focus on their art – but how can a starving artist struggling to earn enough focus on their art?
4- Sound Quality There’s probably no need to mention that the sound quality of analog music is far superior. Even the tiniest sound added by the artist can create a major change in the song.
5- Social Interaction The social interaction in places like music libraries and music stores could develop your knowledge and encourage you to try new things, especially through conversations with others who share your taste in music.
How would we listen compactly, you might ask. The solution could be devices like Walkmans.
You might say that finding new songs will be difficult. But music libraries could be a solution.
You might say, “I don’t have the money.” I’m not saying you should delete everything immediately. Just try to buy records or tapes from lesser-known artists to build a collection, and if you’re going to listen to something in your collection, listen to it in analog, not digital form.
So yes, I also don’t want to step out of my comfort zone and delete my digital music apps, but to the artists reading this: yes, you! This is all for you and music lovers – yes, you! This is all to experience better music, for more artistic creations.
Thank you very much for reading. Your feedback is invaluable. If you support me, please share this, adding your own thoughts, so that by reaching a certain audience, maybe we can change something.
English is not my first language so I used a translator to fix. Sorry for my mistakes
I wanted to post this here because I believe prog listeners will understand me better
Welcome to our weekly show and tell discussion. Are you writing some music? Have you covered a favorite song? Do you create design work for artists? Show off your current work here and be seen!
If you are asking for feedback, you are also encouraged to give good feedback to others.
Thought this could be a fascinating question with how many romantic or disturbing relationships are displayed in the poetry of prog metal. The only ones that come to mind for me though are the disturbing ones like Dillinger Escape Plan (Phone Home, Sleeping Giants) and Opeth.
This is my newest prog obsession. It's SOOOO GOOOD. This is Nospūn's mastermind - Cole Millward's - pre-Nospūn, solo work. It also features James on guitar solos.
It's incredible
Hey, I'm Ángel, leader and main composer of Calamity Translator (maybe some of you around the sub already know us). We're preparing an album to release it towards the end of November, and we'd like to have one of you to record their voice reading out a couple of lines we've written.
For more context, we initially wanted Lou Kelly (The World Is Quiet Here) to do this, but we haven't been able to contact him. So we've opted for looking for someone in this subreddit who would like to participate in our album. Lou Kelly has a great speaking voice, a really particular and interesting one. We're looking for someone who has an interesting voice (we don't really have anything specific in mind, we like surprises and we're pretty open to whatever) and who has a decent mic to record themselves.
For this you don't really need to know how to sing or anything like that, as I've explained before, it would be just a small dialogue. If you consider that you have a unique voice in any way or that you could deliver it in an interesting way, don't hesitate to contact us via MD or comment with a link for us to see how your voice sounds like. We'll probably end up choosing 2 or 3 different people (if more people want to participate). The people we choose will obviously be in the song credits, even though we must clarify that this is all art for art's sake.
Thanks for reading, hope to see some interested folks!
First edit: hey people, thanks a lot to everyone willing to participate and the other people that are supporting us 🫶. I'm really glad to see a lot of you interested in this. Today I'm having a party and I will probably be resting for this weekend after (I've had a really intense week so I would like to rest a little bit 👀). This monday I'll start choosing voices (there will be more than one, definitely), until monday arrives, feel free to send your sample if you haven't already. If you end up not being one of those, don't worry. I have plans for you that may be cool, for this album too. I'll keep you all updated. ✨.
I loved "Digital Veil" to Death! Any recommendations for similar bands/ albums?
