Drought

Drought has been declared. We will likely get water restrictions in the summer months. Do your part now in reducing water usage.

-Water you lawn only if stressed or not at all. -Take your car to get washed instead of washing it in your driveway. -use more effecient watering for garden (drip irrigation, directly watering plants instead of sprinkler, water in dawn or dusk, ex.]

Anyone got good water saving tricks?

Washingtons 6th Congressional District Primary Election

Recently moved to the area, and was looking at candidates to succeed Derek Kilmer in Washington's 6th Congressional District. Wonder what general thoughts are for folks who have lived around here longer?

Hilary Franz or Emily Randall?

Other candidates in the race or info I should know about?

Stories

So, I have a rather unique request for you all. I am looking for distinctive stories from around the Olympic Peninsula, covering activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and more. I'm interested in anything that occurred outdoors in the wilderness of the OlyPen. These stories can range from paranormal experiences and odd happenings to anything interesting in between.

I would like to use these stories as voiceovers for my design session videos, which I plan to post on YouTube and Instagram. All of the designs are tasteful and are inspired by the (PNW) in some way. I will give full credit to the individuals whose stories I select and will need your permission to post them.

Fun things to do in or near Sequim/Port Angeles for a young adult?

Hi there, my dad just moved to Sequim and I'll be staying with him for a couple weeks in May. He's going to get a ride with a friend and let me use his car for at least a day or two while he's at work. I'll also have a bike that I can take when I want too. I was wondering what I should check out while I'm there. I'm really interested in hiking (I'm fairly inexperienced but I love nature/mountains/beaches etc.) I love waterfront areas. Also, I'm 21, I like to drink, socialize, see live music, eat, not sure what's out there in the area, but I definitely don't want to just sit in the house all day. I'll take the bike if I have to. I could probably catch a bus to Seattle, am thinking that might be fun for a day trip.

I’m seriously thinking my next vehicle will be electric. So I thought I’d get input from anyone who currently has one, what’s the charging experience? (Outside of at your own home) What are the challenges?

Parents in PA who work early hours, how do you handle getting your kids to school? Any recommendations?

Hi all,

I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch, but I have been invited to interview for an interesting position for a job that starts before the schools are open. I have two kids in the PASD, so I'd like to start figuring this out ahead of time.

My partner's job makes her unavailable to help get them to school (for now), and I don't have family in the area. How would you suggest handling this situation? Are there places in town like the boys and girls club that would watch kids in the morning and get them to school? I feel like it's a stretch but I don't know what the options are out here.

Thanks!

Does anyone have more context on the PAPEA’s demands?

The PASD labor relations site seems to give a pretty strong case for why the district is hard pressed to offer more than $225k over two years, being that the state drastically underfunds the district to begin with. What information is missing here? Does anyone know what more the PAPEA is asking for? I would love to understand why and on what grounds the district’s current offer isn’t sufficient. What % increase would the $225k constitute for each of the 130 paras in the district? And please don’t respond with a dead end comment like “maybe they should take the money from admin raises.” I don’t disagree, execs absolutely shouldn’t make as much as they do while critical staff struggle to make ends meet, but let’s be realistic.

Two important links regarding the Paraeducator strike.

Change.org petition: https://chng.it/Nj4twVQD9S

I’m not going to pretend that this kind of petition holds much weight in the grand scheme of things, but at the very least it will be utilized to show the public’s support for the striking workers.

Court Document regarding the injunction: http://track.spe.schoolmessenger.com/f/a/c8xOp1aI64XTi4hdCRFglw~~/AAAAAQA~/RgRn9yGSP0R1aHR0cHM6Ly9tc2cuc2Nob29sbWVzc2VuZ2VyLmNvbS9tLz9zPWJ6R1NxSXh6dDJnJm1hbD0xMmQzZThiMjYwNTNmYmMyZjAwMWUxNzE3ZDk0MjAxZTQ0ZTRjNThhOGEwNzA5ZGVmYzhlODJjNDQzN2I3Mzc4VwdzY2hvb2xtQgpmDhLuFWbeYXMqUhVOSUNLQUtTSE9VUEBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAE~

Clicking that link will prompt you to download the 4-page pdf; I got this link directly from an email from the school district.

I am not a lawyer. if one is present on the sub please provide your interpretation so the public can better understand what is being said in this document.

My personal, non-legal professional, reading of this document is that it is ordering the Union to discontinue its organization of the strike but the lines stricken may suggest that the workers can continue striking without penalty assuming that they organize themselves without official participation from the union. While it appears that the Union could be found in contempt if they continue their participation in the strike, I don’t think it is clear if actions can be taken against the striking workers themselves. Beyond that, the judge also struck the plaintiffs’ request to order all of those on strike to return to work immediately.

TO REITERATE, I AM NOT A LAWYER! I am a parent with children who attend PASD public schools, and I am in support of the striking workers and those striking in solidarity. I think it’s important to get as much 1st party information out there about this public issue, and my interpretation is not representative of either the school district or the striking workers. 100% I am open to my interpretation being wrong, and I believe that public discussion is more important than how strongly I believe my opinion on the issue.

Paraeducator update, injunction to force end to strike??

Sounds like a constitutional rights violation to me; the unions have a right to protest as an extension of their free speech. If they want kids back in school, they’ll negotiate in good faith and get the educators what they need to return to work.

Anyone Had their Water tested west of Town off city water?

I was wonder if anyone West of town has had an extensive water test either from a well or even better on the Dry Creek Water district? I guess even some city water results might be interesting as well as some of the city pulls from the Elwha. I am interested in PFAs and plastics in the water among all the other stuff. I was considering getting a basic test done to check for the common things you would want to look for and started seeing more advanced tests that I would love to see the data for but don't have the money to pay for the more expensive tests. So I figured I would ask if anyone had done one and would be willing to share the results, I know they won't exactly match my water but it would be interesting none the less. Thanks!

Hey neighbors! Happy Spring and planting season.

I am looking for 6 half whiskey barrel planters. Anyone know where I could pick something up like that? I'd prefer not to bust the bank but I understand these won't be as cheap as other pots.

Project Macoma Elwha nearshore

From: Anne Shaffer <anne.shaffer@coastalwatershedinstitute.org>
Date: Sat, Apr 6, 2024 at 3:24 PM
Subject: FW: Project Macoma Elwha nearshore _4
To: <anne.shaffer@coastalwatershedinstitute.org>

We’re letting folks know about an important marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) project proposed for the area. It’s a pilot project by a subsidiary of Ebb Carbon, the founders of which include executives from Google, Tesla, and Amazon. The project partners are the Port of Port Angeles, Battelle, and the University of Washington. From the JARPA application SEPA checklist materials submitted to the Port and Washington Department of Ecology (DoE), the goal of the project is to test the feasibility of ‘scrubbing’ CO2 from marine water using intensive chemical technology, by a process that will, quote: ‘create an alkaline enhanced stream that would be returned to Port Angeles Harbor via the barge-based outfall system. The facility is to be built on Terminal 7 in Port Angeles harbor. Both intake and outflow structures will be shallow*.* Outflow/effluent will be from 17 to 30 degrees C and pH of 2.3-13.9, quote:’ the pH of the water could be altered from approximately 8 to 13.5 pH for ‘short periods of time’ (a single tidal cycle*)’* (emphasis added)

In short, the project creates a hostile ‘dead zone’ of caustic hot water with temperatures up to 30 degrees C and pH of 13-14 in the nearshore of Port Angeles Harbor, a region of the Elwha drift cell, that is to be resolved by ‘mixing’ with harbor water that is the migration corridor/contains post-larval and juvenile salmon and forage fish.

An earlier version of the project was conducted off a pier in Sequim Bay. In this phase, post treatment effluent was run thru a water treatment facility before being released back into marine waters. Inexplicably, the Port Angeles Harbor project doesn’t include this treatment phase, and instead releases caustic, hot water directly into the nearshore.

The Port of Port Angeles, the project sponsor, issued itself a SEPA Determination of Non Significance (DNS). DoE is still considering their NPDS permit. If approved, this is precedent setting. It allows clearly avoidable impacts to a federally protected nearshore ecosystem/habitats/ and species, and does so in the Elwha drift cell, one of the most celebrated and significant drift cells in the Salish Sea.

The Coastal Watershed Institute provided an initial set of comments (attached). Instead of addressing these, Ebb Carbon applied to DoE for a ‘determination that lowering of water quality is necessary and in the overriding public interest’.  In translation: they are proposing that mCDR research supersedes both the federal Endangered Species Act, and the Elwha River Fisheries and Ecosystem Recovery Act. Remember, this project is proposed in the nearshore of the Elwha watershed and drift cell where literally hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent to restore ESA ecosystems exactly when the ESA species and ecosystems are starting to restore.

We strongly recommend that state, federal, and Tribal co-managers reject these decisions and instead require that full and substantive avoidance mitigation measures for this project, including its’ water quality impacts. Particularly in light of the critical nature of nearshore habitats of the Salish Sea region, the hundreds of millions of dollars of public tax dollars spent on current and past ecosystem restoration actions in the region for the last quarter of a century, and the potential negative impacts of this project on ecosystem scale restoration response now underway. At a minimum, the effluent from this project must be conveyed to a water treatment system (as was apparently required for Sequim Bay/Dungeness drift cell) and treated so that the water quality of the project effluent is equal or better than the water quality at withdrawal.

And of course in the current framework we also recommend that EPA require that the Washington Department of Ecology require the applicant to apply all known and reasonable technology (AKART) to their discharge to meet State of Washington Water Quality Standards for protection of migratory fish life documented to be within the discharge zone, and that all numeric and narrative water quality standards are met.

Finally, it should be considered that this project is basically a “proof of concept” phase for a commercial product that will be offered for sale by a for-profit corporation using Waters of the State for private gain without mitigation. In our opinion, implementation of Project Macoma in its’ current form only benefits Project Macoma and parent company Ebb Carbon, not the public and not the ecological resource we all want (and have invested so much public tax dollar) to conserve and restore.

The comment period for DoE decisions on this NPDES permit, including the abdication of public interest, is open. The link to provide input is below. We are encouraging folks to please take a few minutes to review our comments, and then provide input/ comment to DoE, EPA, and other resource managers including CoE, WDFW, and DNR.

Remarkable that we are even having to post this.

Mowing and landscaping

Hi all! I just moved to the area in March. Spring has sprung, and my yard is in desperate need of a mow and weeding. Do you have any recommendations?

After mowing, I would like to talk to a real landscape person about what to do with my yard. I want to focus on more native plants and less lawn.

Thanks...I can really use the help!
