Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. Pilates exercises are done on a mat or using special equipment, such as the Reformer, the Cadillac and Wunda Chair. With its system of pulleys and springs, handles and straps, the apparatus can provide either resistance or support, depending on your needs. Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. His method was influenced by western forms of exercise, including gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method – which he called contrology – for several decades.
While the methods are different, pilates and yoga both develop strength, balance, flexibility, posture and good breathing technique. Both systems emphasize the connection between physical and mental health, although yoga places more emphasis on relaxation and uses meditation. Pilates is performed both on apparatus and mats, whereas classic yoga doesn't require any equipment. Pilates exercises are performed in a flow of movement without the static poses associated with yoga.

Does anyone know if Club Pilates typically does Black Friday promos? I did an intro class at a new Club Pilates in my town and I liked it, but don't really want to pay $149 just to join pus $200 a month for 8 sessions or $259 for unlimited. Curious if maybe BF deals offer discounts or waive the joining fee. Where it's so close...I can hold off if that might happen. Thanks!
Hi all,
I want to get back into reformer (after a few years of saving money etc). The only thing is where I live, and I’m sure a lot of others have this issue, the pricing is just so high.
The only pack that I think I can find (and location) that’s worth it is 20 classes for the whole year. Is it even worth going say twice a month (and having the two months off)? I know most people say you need to go multiple times a week, but I just cannot justify the cost.
I am also finding a lot of gyms don’t do standard mat Pilates classes anymore, so I don’t have that option to try and save $$$.
hello
I've been thinking about becoming a Pilates instructor for some time now, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any places/studios that offer teacher training in the Houston area. I like modern studios that do a mix of classical and contemporary pilates, but it seems like from what I have found, most training offered in Houston focuses on just classical, which I can settle with since I think that would be a good foundation for me to be able to teach in a lot of places. As of right now, a top contender is Rebel Pilates Collective, but I'm still open to any other places or suggestions!
thank you :)
ps. since I've heard mixed things about club pilates, I will not be choosing to do instructor training there so that's a non-option
pps. i will also take any studio suggestions in general for me to take classes since I've just moved back to Houston ~1 month ago and am still exploring places
I want to try mat pilates at home using videos, but all the ones I've found on youtube have pumpy music in the background unless they are relaxing stretching classes. I want to work hard, but to gentle or soothing music. Anyone know of videos like that?
The Down Dog Pilates app lets you pick the background music, so that's working so far, but it's not free. Would be great to find a free option.
Hi all, I'm considering buying a Your Reformer Pilates machine (I'm in Australia). I noticed there is an early black friday sale and the price is 'now $2795', on sale from $2995AUD I looked a few weeks ago and could have sworn is was $2795 full price then, with a promo code for an extra 5% off on top of that 🤔 but now I'm wondering and I can't find any screenshots of the price taken previously to know.
Has anyone bought from these guys before or recently and how much did you pay? Just wanting to get the best deal if I can. Recently separated from my husband of 20yrs and want to do something for myself. 🙂
Hi everyone! I've been doing Club Pilates since August and absolutely love it and see differences in myself that I want to continue working on. I recently moved though, and have the option of joining LifeTime gym at an insanely discounted price. Pilates classes are really important to me no matter where I go, but the option of a whole gym included is nice as well.
What I'm wondering is.. should I continue Club Pilates or switch to Pilates classes at Life Time? Does anyone do Pilates at Life Time and like it or hate it? Or does anyone just have Pilates classes experiences at other gyms and have opinions between a Pilates studio or whole gym?
Thanks! :)
I did my first ever beginner pilates session on the reformer. But I really struggled and my low back is super sore and tight. I have anterior pelvic tilt and feel like my low back is always in extension.. for some reason it is super flared up.
For those who are similar in posture, how do you work around it? Should I actively try and tuck the pelvis? I cannot squat if I do this 😅
Hi, I took the Intensive Reformer Pilates course with Stott/Merrithew earlier this year and I’m debating whether to take this upcoming ISP course (designed for people with injuries, catering to elderly clients, prenatal, etc.) Two weekends, 6 hours each day. It’s $1,400 but the price increases to $1,820 on 11/1/24 (due to Merrithew’s request, apparently.) The cost of the intensive reformer training was $1,900 for 5 weekends, so it just seems ridiculously expensive by comparison. Just wondering if any Pilates instructors here have taken the course and can recommend whether or not it’s worth it? Really appreciate your input! 🙏
I’m 18w pregnant. . I did reformer Pilates 4x a week before I got pregnant & still continue now. My instructors are great and give me lots of modifications. But they all approve of pikes, dolphins, and wheelbarrows, and I’m staring to see coning during these exercises. My question is: are these exercises usually ok during pregnancy and I’m performing them wrong? Or should I stop during these exercises now that I’m well into 2nd trimester?
Thanks!
Locally in The Lower Mainland, (BC, Canada) Pilates classes are $33-40 a class.
I understand they are smaller classes, on avg, 5:1 ratio but $500+ a month for 4x 40-60 min classes. How does anyone afford that?
Even one time a month is $160 - which is 2x the cost of a monthly recreation pass in most cities
Am I missing something?
I randomly decided to treat myself to a 5-week intro-to-reformer course at a local Pilates studio. I’ve now done 4 of the 5 sessions and wanted to share a bit of my “before” and “after”, because I didn’t really like most of the Pilates progress stories that I found online. It feels like every online “Pilates journey” treats the Pilates philosophy as an instrumental means to solely aesthetic ends. I’m as vain as any other 20-something girl, but my main goals were to improve my posture and core strength. Like, I was honestly mainly drawn to Pilates for its tenets of alignment and Contrology. And I’m so happy I spent a little extra to go to a mixed classical/Stott studio, because in this month I’ve learned so much about controlling my breathe, releasing tense muscles, and really tapping into mind-muscle connection with my core.
One tangible benefit has been being able to automatically realize and self-correct whenever I have a lot of tension in my shoulders and hips, which is pretty common for those of us with office jobs.
I also started powerlifting earlier this year and I find that Pilates compliments it really well. I’ve been able to maintain a lot more control and intentionality in my movement, which is important when you’re working with heavy weights. This has also been helpful in establishing and maintaining mind-muscle connection throughout sets. I hurry through my sessions much less, even though it takes at most 10 minutes more to work out now compared to before I started Pilates.
I’ve gotten better at breath work. I can use my breathing more strategically now, which helps a lot when bracing while lifting. I’ve also been much better able to notice when I’m overly focused on something and holding my breath, and self-correct in much the same way I can release muscle tension more easily now. And remembering to breathe deeply and strategically is of course really beneficial when you’re feeling anxious or stressed - I always find I’m better able to control my more neurotic side after doing yoga regularly and Pilates has been no different.
I’ve done mat classes before, although not at a classical studio. I always loved how matwork improved my posture basically immediately, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find myself becoming a lot more flexible thanks to the added instability of the reformer apparatus. The added emphasis on flexibility and stability has helped my form a ton in powerlifting, helping me feel like I’m getting a lot more out of each individual session than I was before I started Pilates. I live in a city with icy winters so I’m hoping this added stability will help me slip less on the ice when it comes, haha.
Once my course finishes, I probably can’t afford to go regularly so I really hope I can figure out a way to either get more into matwork at home or incorporate some of the things I’ve learned into other aspects of my workouts/life.
Hey - my life circumstances are complicated atm so I can't keep going to the studio for pilates (before, I went 4/5 times a week). I started classes at home on YouTube, and it's going well for now, but I am afraid I could lose my motivation...anyone had similar experiences? Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated.
I didn’t know where else to go, but I knew this community could understand!
I just took an xformer class that advertises itself as modern Pilates. The room was dark, the music was booming loud, and the instructor spoke through a microphone. There were no body cues, no breath cues, no instructions.
Basically, I felt damn near close to injury during the entire workout! I left feeling so upset and angry. It was like intense HIIT pseudo-Pilates.
Anyone else have this same experience with these xformer machines?
Edit: I signed up bc I thought it was Pilates. I just moved away from my beloved Pilates studio and was excited for this one. Turns out it was this xformer crap.
I’m looking at purchasing a Balanced Body Allegro 2 reformer. Does anyone know if they have a sale for Black Friday/cyber Monday?
I started doing pilates like a month ago while on a healthier-me journey. I've noticed that since then my lower back has been ... uncomfortable, like stiff maybe? It feels tight enough that I put a heating pad on it while I watch TV or read. I cannot for the life of me tell if this is because it's getting stronger or if I'm doing something painfully wrong. It feels like it relieves somewhat when i tuck my tailbone under. Anyone experience something similar or have some feedback?
Started Pilates recently with a trainer and I so want to love it but don’t. It’s not the trainer because I've known her for years and love doing yoga with her. She's a very good match for me training/personality wise.
For those who want more context, read on. Otherwise looking for advice on how long I should give it to enjoy it and how do I get through it without hating every second.
I’m 48F. We do two half hour sessions a week of Pilates and one half hour of yoga. I’ve always done some sort of activity since I was 16 up until, you guessed it! The pandemic! 😩 I’ve ran/jogged, done Spin, hip hop classes, step classes, Zumba, kickboxing, yoga and some Pilates years ago. Due to schedule changes I sometimes would work out in the am and sometimes after work. I’ve done Power (weights) and core classes. I’m comfortable working out in gyms and at home. I’ve created my own weightlifting programs and have followed those I’ve found online or in books. I have a pretty good set up at home and am also content to pop in a DVD or find something online. Worst part is I used to be an instructor for about 7 years up until 2020. Taught Mossa Power, boot camp classes, HIIT, Spin, Turbo Kick (anyone remember that? Haha) and core. I may even be forgetting some. 🤷🏻♀️ Anyway, looking for advice on whether I’ll eventually love it. I’m choosing Pilates and yoga over the more intense stuff I used to do just because I feel it’s a healthier self care route for me given my age.
Edit: The voucher is no longer available.

I've seen a lot of videos on how the trauma is stored in our body and there are poses that helps you release it, in pilates i've seen other people speaking about it, and i wanna do that, i have tight hips and shoulders, any advice?
Any recommendations for teacher training in Oklahoma City (area)
I'm doing basic pilates but it's getting a bit easy for me now and want to go to advanced, but also a bit scared if that makes sense? When did you make that call?
Hey all! I have bad posture, weak upper body strength, weak core and back… I want to strengthen both but I don’t know what class would be best?
If you think one over the other, why?
Thanks for the help guys ☺️
Just as title says, I don’t have any Pilates studios nearby, closest is about almost an hour away and that’s just not realistic with my lifestyle. Is it possible to get obtainable results by following YouTube videos? I just want to be more lean and active and I definitely want to increase my mobility. I found a YouTube plan by Madeline Abeid and was just wondering if that would be helpful or if there are better options out there.
Hello! I just started doing Pilates 2 weeks ago, and I’ve been noticing after intense classes, I get this deep deep panic at first that then turns into a strong sadness and I literally burst into tears. I have to make sure to say my goodbyes quick and get in my car because I start sobbing almost immediately after these classes, nothing has happened in the classes to make me cry or upset or anything, and I cannot control it. The crying spells eventually subsides in like 10 minutes, and then I feel much better. My body feels good and I’m not in pain or anything, but my mind just seems to be swarmed with a depression out of no where. I’m really confused on why this happens, because when it first happened I thought maybe I was just stressed from my busy week but now I’ve noticed a pattern of this occurring after sessions! And like I said before, it usually ends after 10 minutes, and then I’m me again and I do feel refreshed, but during these attacks I’m scared because I’m not sure why I’m crying/upset and I can’t stop it! Does anyone know why this is, or if this is normal? Do I need psychiatric help?😅 I love Pilates and don’t want to stop the classes but I’m worried for the sake of my sanity🥲Would appreciate any answers or advice!!
Have never done Pilates but want to. I am very activity and go to the gym regularly . I prefer to workout alone and do not like working out in group settings. Does anyone know of any Pilates gyms in NJ that offer solo workouts ?
Why keep it to the mat when you can do it on the reformer AND with a bit of spice 🌶️ added in progression?
A brand new Pilates center is opening up near me and they’re offering special discounts for “founding” members.
Is $159 for x8 classes a month (MAT and reformer) a good price? Unused classes can be rolled over.
I’m relatively new to Pilates and only done MAT at home so I’m wondering if I should take advantage or assume this is average pricing.
I was checking out different teacher training courses and most of them require minium 30 hours of doing Pilates.
Is it possible to do this by yourself (with classes with online instructors) without coming to class?
Thank you!
