St Mary's Nature Trail?

Does anybody know good places for pictures at St Marys I've seen nice pictures taken there but I'm struggling to find the exact place. I was looking here but Im not sure where the willow tree or gardens would be.

Would the area around Lake Marian be interesting?

Claiming AP Credit

I have questions about claiming AP credits at ND when it comes to premed track classes. I would have taken 13-14 AP classes with over 32 credits by the end of senior year high school.

  • How will it show up on college transcript if a student has used AP credits? Do colleges look down if someone has transferred AP credits from high school?
  • ND accepts AP credits. Do you get to skip that class altogether and free up time for other things like ECs? or are you pushed automatically into higher level classes? I'm worried about using credits and end up with difficult classes that could potentially make getting higher GPA difficult.
  • Lastly, does it give you any advantage or priority having AP credits in choosing classes/teachers at ND? Hoping to choose best profs with easier grades lol.
  • Any other advise how current students in premed use (or not) AP credits.

Please advise. Thanks!

Neuroscience and Pre-med

I would be majoring in neuroscience on the pre-med track at ND. Recently, I have felt the need to also major in something that would help me get a higher score on the MCAT. Maybe Biochem or chemistry or biology or even psychology. What do you all suggest?

CS Career Advisor

Does anyone know any advisors or people in the career center that would be a good resource for navigating a career after graduating with a CS degree? It seems like most of the college of engineering advisors are not very knowledgeable about the recruiting and applying landscape specific to CS majors, but they do know about other majors. So far I've just tried to figure it out solo, but it would be nice to find a go-to person for those questions. Thanks

Love for the Basilica

One of my favorite places to go when the weather is nice out is the Basilica. I think the architecture of the building is so beautiful and I often find myself staring at the stained glass on the inside. Whether it's attending a Sunday mass, participating in a campus event, or simply finding solace in its peaceful atmosphere, the Basilica fosters a sense of connection to Notre Dames rich history and my fellow students. Whether you are a current or incoming student, or just visiting for a football game, I definitely recommend you stop by the Basilica and take in its beauty.

ND Forum 2024?

Seems like with current world events, ND could revisit https://forum2022.nd.edu/. A thoughtful debate, moderated by the president, with experts from Keough. Since ND is where the church does its thinking, seems like a real opportunity to lead where so many have failed.

Dare to do difficult things.

Transfer Help - Summer Courses

I submitted a transfer application for Fall 2024 for Arts and Letters. I did not take a natural science course my freshman year so I believe I will have to take this course over the summer if I were accepted. However, results come out in early June and by then I believe it will be too late for me to register for a course -- I also heard of transfers a couple of years ago getting calls from ND about how they will have to take a course over the summer. I know it's May 2nd, but is it a bad sign that I have not gotten any information about required courses even though I will 100% need to take a course over the summer? Please let me know, thanks

EE MS student matriculate into Phd Program?

Hi, I'm an incoming EE MS student in 2024 FALL. I am wondering how to matriculate into Phd Program. Do I need to re-apply online or not. How likely is it for a Master's student to matriculate into a Ph.D. program?

Since EE MS program is a one-year program. Is it good for me to apply for PhD in other universities?

Wife is spending a month on campus this summer. What should she know about dorm life?

My wife was just accepted to get her Masters through the Remick Leadership Program at Notre Dame, which includes a month of in-person classes every summer for the next three summers. It's been 20 years since she lived in a dorm and she's never been to Notre Dame or South Bend, so I was hoping Reddit could come to the rescue and answer a few questions:

  • What are the dorms like, in terms of amenities, appliances (microwave/minifridge), and bathrooms?
  • Aside from basic personal effects, is there anything specific she'll need that won't be available?
  • What's the laundry room situation?
  • Are any support facilities (e.g. bookstore, c-store) open at all during the summer, or will she have to go off campus to buy basics like school supplies or toiletries?
  • We live in Texas. What kind of weather should she plan for in Indiana from late June through the end of July?

Any answers will be much appreciated. Thanks!

International Student dropping IB points

I was accepted to ND with a 41/45 IB predicted grade as an international. In the second sem of g12 my GPA and school grades stayed consistent, but I am almost halfway done with my IB exams and will probably land in the 34-37 final score range. I have a friend who attends another university that went from 41 to 34 and had to write an explanation for the "drop in academic standards." What would I even say in this if the drop in IB score is purely because of some harder-than-expected exams and less studying than grade 11? Should I be worried about being emailed about it or a rescinded admission?

Updated Aid Offer

I recently appealed my financial aid offer and they just got back to me today. They are unable to give me grants based on need because of our family assets but they did give me some scholarships and campus employment totaling to just about $18,000.

After all scholarships, including external, and how much my family is able to contribute, I am still missing approximately $23,000 to cover the rest of my cost of attendance.

My family and I had originally taken Notre Dame off of my list because we were missing about $60,000 after parent contributions and external scholarships I had already received. However, now with this updated offer, we are willing to put it back in the table.

I have already submitted my deposit at a different school, but should I submit the deposit for Notre Dame as well? I am waiting on some big scholarships that I won’t hear back from until June 1-30 but if I get those scholarships, then the rest of my COA would be covered.

Do you think it’s unethical to commit to more than one school?

Weed culture at ND

I know ND is a lot less 🍃 friendly and oriented than most schools because of stricter rules, vibe of the student body, etc. but I’m wondering what the current culture is around smoking and if there truly is a bad stigma. Do a lot of kids smoke weed? Are there certain groups or clubs that do more than others? I know drinking is the norm but is it really an “underground” group of students that smoke? I saw this sorta question answered many years ago on this sub I’m just looking for a more updated answer. Thanks!

Notre Dame Mechanical Engineering Job Opportunities

Hey everyone! I recently got admitted as an undergrad at Notre Dame as an international student planning to major in mechanical engineering, and possibly a dual major in finance. I'm not sure about the employment opportunities for mechanical engineering graduates especially since most companies are shifting towards software-related hiring. I hear a lot about how mechanical engineering graduates struggle to get jobs, especially in the US. I wondered if anybody has any experience with this and possible advice on my situation. I've also been looking at Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics (ACMS) as an alternative option. I'm pretty decent at math and interested in finance and the stock market, and this degree looks like a good combination of both. Would a dual major in ACMS and finance be a better option for employment opportunities?

Anyone here in Notre Dame transferred from Saint Mary Physics? Please share your thoughts.

My daughter is admitted to Saint Mary’s College with Dean’s scholarship. I am learning about the dual engineering program she applied. She plans to major in Physics in Saint Mary’s, and then Mechanical Engineering in Notre Dame. If you have experiences in the dual degree engineering program, please share your thoughts. Anything is appreciated. Would you do it all over again if given the chance? For context, she is also admitted to UIUC and University of Washington, Seattle. Architecture major for UIUC and Engineering for UW.

Pre-med

As an incoming Freshman who's going on the pre-med track, I have heard nothing but great things about it. I've committed because of so much positivity towards this school and it's program. To all Notre Dame graduates or current seniors, after graduating where did you end up in terms of medical school and your career paths. Thank you and go Irish ☘️!!!!

Notre Dame vs State School

Hello everyone, it is getting very close to commitment time for college and I am STRESSING. I would love to go to Notre Dame as a biology major (pre-med) but the cost of attendance would be about 45k in loans per year. My parents are not helping me to pay for college which would mean that I would be taking out a lot in private loans.

On the other hand, going to school in-state would allow me to graduate nearly debt free before attending medical school.

I truly loved Notre Dame when I visited for the people and the campus itself, but I don’t think it’s realistic for me to spend that much on loans.

Please offer me some guidance if anyone has been in a similar situation or has an opinion on this.

Thank you!

Notre Dame vs RICE

Daughter wants to major in Aerospace engineering. She got waitlisted from her top 2 dream schools so she’s now trying to decide. RICE doesn’t have aerospace engineering but they have astrophysics and astronomy w mechanical engineering. I bet she will change her mind though. I think she likes the “fun” parts about ND (she went to a summer engineering program two years ago and loved it). Both are full price (sucks being upper middle class). Which school is better!?!!!
