Dear r/ Norway,
I am not sure if this is the right subreddit but I want to try anyway. (if not help me to the right place please)
A month ago me and my girlfriend went on vacation to Norway, she is a real geek for the Starbucks "you are here" collection and off course we wanted one from Norway (not the cities, but country mug). We tried multiple starbucks in Oslo, the one in Lillehamer and the both in Stavanger, but nowhere was it to be found. We only were visiting for one day in these citys so we couldnt ask for an order to be delivered of the mug.
Now i hope there is someone on here wo can help me get a hands on one of these mugs because i think it would be an amazing christmas gift for her. (all marketplaces and amazon in my country (the netherlands) dont sell them)
I hope someone here has a way to help me out, I hope to hear from you all.
thanks in advance
Hi Y'all! This is my itinerary for Norway and I needed some suggestions: I have planned 1.5 days in Oslo and from there taking the Bergensbanen and staying in Bergen for 2 days. From there it is 4 days in Tromso and then back home. Now I am worried, am I doing too less? Should I take the 'Norway in a Nutshell' tour from Oslo to Bergen instead rather than the straight 7hr train? Or should I take the Nærøyfjord Fjord cruise once I am in Bergen which would make up for it?
My company is suffering financial difficulties and they have been laying off people a lot. Also many people who have been working for several years left the job recently. In interviews recruiters generally ask this question… Why are you looking for a new job?
Even though I am interested in a new job I also think my biggest reason for job search is bad conditions at my current company.
Is it okay if I tell this to recruiters in a constructive manner?
Hi all, going to Lillehammer in Feb 2025 and am hoping to see the northern lights. Apparently they're not very common there but all the packages I can find are a LOT more north and I'm only there for a few days. Anyone know anywhere that's not too far north that I might have a chance at seeing them? Happy to rent a car for a day for this purpose, but anything more than 3 hours drive will be difficult.
My first time buying a home in Norway. I have owned a home elsewhere, so I know the basics, but I am trying to understand the economics of fellesgjeld.
A couple questions:
Let's say I buy a 5m kr house with a 20% down payment. So I pay 1m kr and get a loan for 4m kr. Over time the housing market rises 10% and I sell the house for 5.5m kr. I will pay off the 4m kr mortgage and receive 1.5m kr in revenue (0.5m in profit).
Compare that to fellegjeld. Lets say I buy an apartment with a prisantydning of 1m kr and a fellesgjeld of 4m kr (totalpris = 5m). I pay 1m kr cash for the apartment and now have the 4m kr fellesgjeld as debt - effectively the same as the previous example. If, as in the previous example, the housing market goes up 10%, what happens? Do I sell the apartment for 1.1m kr? Or do I sell the apartment for 1.5m kr? In other words, does the totalpris rise 10% or does the prisantydning rise 10%? Which is considered the appraised "value" of the home?
It seems like as you pay off the fellesgjeld, by paying down the debt, that value should be transferred to the value of the apartment. For example, consider the example of the apartment with prisantydning of 1m kr and fellesgjeld of 4m kr. If the house market increases 0% and I pay off 10% of the fellesgjeld so the remaining fellesgjeld is 3.6m. If I go to sell the house, the total price should still be 5m kr, but now the prisantydning should be 1.4m kr. Is that how it works? Or does the fellesgjeld not affect the price of the apartment at all?
Obviously, if you are taking out a mortgage, they will approve you to buy a house based on the totalpris. They will consider the mortgage + fellesgjeld to be your total "debt." But what if you do not get a mortgage but instead pay cash for the prisantydning? Do you need to get a letter from the bank saying you can afford the fellesgjeld or is it your own responsibility to determine whether you can afford it?
Thanks!
I have received my work permit papers for Norway, it has 8 digits DUF/Reference number, how can i verify this online? my job agency gave me this work permit paper, I want to confirm this on the Norway govt website, how can i do this?
Hello!
My partner and I are planning a destination elopement in December 2026 to Norway so we can get some lovely photos with the aurora (and beautiful landscapes in general). I’m looking for guidance about what the best location may be to get these shots. From a quick Google search it seems the northern part of the country is most ideal, but we would love some insight from anyone with firsthand experience, if you’re willing!
Hello everyone,
I have a question about the Norway work visa if anyone has some advice. I’m sure there has been a lot of posts from Americans such as myself wanting to escape Trumpland. Scandinavia and Norway in particular has been at the top of my list for sometime, but I’m concerned about my résumé and work experience.
I am a professional beekeeper and have been one for over a decade now. Most beekeepers don’t have any sort of formal training, although recently some schools offer certification programs for beekeeping. But pretty much every beekeeper I know either apprenticed or were self taught. My undergrad is in History and Religious Studies so it’s not applicable to my profession and I’m wondering if this would be a hindrance to my obtaining a work visa. And since beekeeping is a very seasonal job, I’m worried this would be additionally concerning. Should I just do a certification program for beekeeping or go in another direction altogether?
Does anyone have advice on how to work with this or am I just out of luck? My husband and I wouldn’t be able to move for at least 5 to 7 years, so in the meantime we are learning Norwegian, doing as much research as possible, and getting all of our ducks in a row so speak.
Any, and all advice would be incredibly helpful, and thank you in advance!
hello! what are the best snacks that I should try? any recommendations? thank you!! 😊
Planning a trip to Oslo and Tromso with two options. One would be end of November/first week in December. The second would be the week around Dec 30 and leave by Jan 3.
The plan would be to check out the city of Oslo and then head North around Tromso to try and see the northern lights if we get lucky. Woulddo some tourist activities like dogsledding, snowshoeing, ice fising etc. We’re looking to drive out of Tromso to Narvik, maybe Kiruna as well. TBD.
Wondering about snow coverage/ conditions as far as scenery in the beginning vs end of the month of December. Where I’m from we often get early/patchy snow over dead grass before winter really sets in for Jan/Feb. December is often just barren and less pretty than the months with better snow coverage.
Any thoughts on how good the snow is in the first week of Dec vs last? Won’t matter so much for Oslo, but for the countryside it’s a lot nicer when snow covered I would imagine, and I’m sure activities like dogsledding or ice fishing require some minimum amount of coverage before starting.
Hi all, looking for some straight up advice from a local of northern Norway. I did ask a similar question previously but now have more specific locations and a time frame.
From February to the first week of March I'm planning to visit and drive between Tromso to Senja, Senja to Narvik, Narvik back to Skibotn, Skibotn to Tromso. Possibly I will make a trip from Narvik into Abisko, Sweden. I've driven Tromso > Lyngen > Senja > Tromso previously and have experience driving in the dark and in rainy conditions of autumn in those areas.
I've been driving around 10 years but have 0 experience driving in snow and ice. I see very mixed views online about first timers driving in Norway. Some say if you use common sense, don't drive like a moron and with some studded tyres you will be fine, others say do not do it no matter what.
The main purpose of the trip is to experience the arctic winter which I have always wanted to do, and search for the aurora. I've done solo driving at night in the rain searching for clear skies and the aurora in northern Norway before but it's my dream to be able to do it during the winter months. I don't know how else I could make that a reality without just doing it and becoming more comfortable whilst there, as I'm not from a country where I could have the option to practice in similar conditions first. I feel like I am a sensible person who plans and prepares very well but I understand the difficulties these conditions could bring.
I don't want to rely on tours for seeing the lights nor public transport to travel between areas.
I'd appreciate some honest and straight up feedback regarding driving on my plans as I want to start booking things.
Thanks!
I didn’t classify it as Working in Norway or Moving as it’s both or neither depending on how you count it being temporarily.
One of my best friends has hit the point of no return on how to include his dreams of the (Norwegian) mountains and the way of life into his life. Be it long holidays, be it living a simple life there. Or in whatever form. He would love to give it a try for a while and explore the idea to see what suits him and what doesn’t, though there are some challenges. I read the post about moving to or working in Norway. But I still want to ask, as people who ask can be helped :).
One challenge would be cost, which is a two sided coin., the other is a place to stay. One side of the coin would be to keep cost of staying in Norway reasonable. Renting a hotel room for a few months certainly isn’t.
So the first question would be: is anyone renting out or knowing how/where to find or about a rentable apartment/house for him to stay with some flexibility? (Would also cover the place to stay bit).
The other side of the coin is having something of an income. For more info: he is a 37 year old Dutch guy and a talented photographer/cameraman, including good with editing work, running his own business in it for over a decade. We both did a handful of other jobs as a side income when we were young, which includes all sorts of jobs in the catering industry and construction, and much more. Every idea is welcome!
I am looking forward to ANY advice. Everything could help! Thanks in advance :).
Came for the fjords, took my favorite picture in the mountains
I had been in Norway for a bit and had this coffee that I absolutely loved. I left for a work trip and my wife used all the coffee grounds. I can't remember the brand but it was a black bag with like a white center strip with the info. I think it had a lighthouse on the package too and the name started with a B possibly. I got it while in Andøya.
Hi,
I am considering a heatpump for my house which has 3 floors. I found a supplier offering Mitsubishi Uwano 7000 for 25900 NOK including installation. I have no prior experience or knowledge about heatpumps.
Could you please let me know if this is a good heatpump and if the price is competitive? Also are there other heatpumps that you would recommend?
Thank you in advance.
What kind of accomondations are there in norwegian jobs for autistics or people with adhd (if there are any)? How are they treated?
Hey all, ive got a question about the doctor service, are they open 24/7 and contactable through the 116117 number or is it only after hours? Im a little confused. I had an appendectomy last week and need to contact the legevakta but it doesnt seem like they pick up, internet says 24/7 though
I want to move to Norway in a few years and I want to know some national dishes and some tasty Norwegian foods you'd recommend. I said expect Brunost, because everybody in Norway told me about it when I was there on vacation.
Im willing to go to the tons of rock festival, and im wondering how is it there?
Is it complicated to sleep in Oslo and travel to the festival every day? in manners of transportation etc...
I have been to Hellfest and Rock werchter, in the werchter i have slept in the hive (tents inside the festival) and in the hellfest ive stayed in nantes, a city which has 40 minuets train to the festival area
how different is it in terms of atmosphere, weather, and overall experience?
Hello fellow scandinavians.
I'm planning a road trip from Denmark to the north of Norway, specifically the area around Lyngenfjord, in the week surrounding New Year, and I'm wondering which preparations I should do with regards to the car. I'm driving a Tesla Model 3 Long Range with all-wheel drive.
Specifically I'm wondering if a good set of winter tires are enough, or should I buy a set of snow chains as well?
And of course, if anyone have any other insights or good advice regarding driving an electric car that far north during winter times.
This is a long shot- but does anyone know where I can find the lyrics for a Norwegian hip hop song? Nummer by Tungtvann. The usual sites don’t have the lyrics for this specific song.
I have an EU passport but as far as I understand for the first few months I'll need private health insurance until I get a job in Norway. So what are my beat options for private health insurance?
Hello, everyone!
I’m looking for financial aid or scholarships since I’m planning to study in Norway for a semester next year as part of the Erasmus program. Currently, I’m in my second year of a Psychology degree. I’ll receive approximately €350 from the mobility program, which I understand is quite insufficient for Norway's high cost of living.
For this reason, I’m reaching out to you—most likely Norwegian folks—hoping you can share information about scholarships or financial aid I might apply for to make living there for five months more affordable. Specifically, I’ll be attending the University of Oslo, so any advice related to government scholarships or university grants would be incredibly helpful.
Thank you in advance, and warm regards to my Norwegian friends!

Hei!
I had a week long motorcycle trip in norway and I heard there were no road tolls for motorcycles.
It says that the invoice is for road tolls and I have no problem paying it (should I?). My question is are there or are there no road tolls for motorcycles?
