Photographers

Hey, I’m looking for a photographer that specializes in dating apps. I don’t know how to take pictures of myself and would be uncomfortable doing so. I lost close to 100 pounds so I have literally no updated pictures and if I’m going to do online dating I want to stand out and make the algorithms work in my favour. I know people who live on the mainland who went the photographer route and they are doing very well in dating so I figure I’d do the same. Anybody know dating app photographers in St. John’s? I know Toronto has tons and tons but cannot find one in this city for some reason.

Dave McHugh

I just heard that Dave McHugh passed away. He was a great musician and great human. I saw him in HV-GB sometime last year. I’m not sure what happened but I know he has touched a lot of people. Some things just really get to you.

What's the deal with unemployment?

I'm doing a school project and need to do some research about unemployment in NL. I know we have high unemployment rates but what problems is it causing exactly? Can anyone explain it and/or suggest websites that talk about it? I can only find statistic and not any in depth examinations of our unemployment rates.

Proposal for Modernizing Payphones with Internet and Text Capabilities in St. John’s

I have an idea aimed at enhancing access to essential services for St. John’s residents and visitors, particularly those who may be low-wage workers or underhoused. I believe this initiative could make a meaningful difference in our community. While there are undoubtedly bigger challenges in the capital city, I believe this is a small but impactful step that could add to the broader efforts of creating a more inclusive and egalitarian community. What do you think? Could this be a viable solution to support not only residents and visitors but also underserved groups in St. John’s? Let’s discuss!

As you know, the (few) remaining payphones in our city remain a critical communication resource for individuals without smartphone access. However, these payphones are outdated, offering only basic functionality. With Bell’s support, I propose that the City of St. John’s explore upgrading some of these payphone booths into modern, multi-functional kiosks that provide phone services, text messaging, internet access, and touchscreen interfaces.

This initiative could draw from projects like LinkNYC in New York, a first-of-its-kind communications network that replaced payphones with kiosks offering free high-speed Wi-Fi, phone calls, device charging, and interactive tablets for city services, maps, and directions. For St. John’s, I envision a unique model that emphasizes SMS/texting capacity, privacy and classic phone functionality, including a traditional receiver for calls—unlike the NYC kiosks that require personal earphones for private calls and lack SMS functionality.

These upgraded kiosks would serve all demographics, prioritizing under-served individuals and offering essential communication tools with access to community and health resources. With an innovative model, the City of St. John’s, in partnership with Bell, could lead a groundbreaking Canadian initiative. For a province that values innovation, this project would be a valuable opportunity to expand communication options, promote equitable access, and reinforce the province's and the City's commitment to progressive public services.

Suggested Locations for Upgraded Kiosks (photos attached):

  • West end of Water Street (behind the Convention Centre)
  • East end of Water Street (corner of Prescott and Water)
  • Military Road (corner of Gower and Military)

These kiosks could replace existing payphones or be installed in areas with limited access. Importantly, the service should remain free, ensuring accessibility for everyone regardless of their financial situation.

Cost Estimates: Based on similar projects, typical installation costs for public kiosks range from $10,000 to $30,000 per unit, depending on location, technology (Wi-Fi, touchscreen, etc.), and infrastructure requirements. Upgrading existing payphones with modern features may cost $5,000 to $10,000 per unit. While costs can vary, I believe the community benefits would far outweigh the investment.

Cost Considerations: The installation and maintenance of LinkNYC kiosks were primarily funded through private investments and the revenues generated from advertising. This model helped ensure the initiative came at no cost to taxpayers. These kiosks can utilize an advertising model to offset the costs of installation and ongoing maintenance, creating a sustainable revenue stream while keeping the service free for users. By using ad-supported kiosks, we can reduce the financial burden on the City and leverage commercial partnerships to fund these valuable community resources.

Added Benefits:

  • Enhanced Reputation and Branding: This initiative would position both the City of St. John’s and Bell/Bell Aliant as leaders in digital equity and social responsibility.
  • Alignment with Core Values: It aligns with the organization's values of accessibility, innovation, and community support.
  • Stronger Community Engagement: This project would showcase a tangible commitment to supporting underserved populations, contributing to the broader mission of enhancing quality of life for all residents.

I believe this would be a valuable investment in our community.

Thank you for your consideration!

Sincerely,
A Devoted Resident With Too Many Ideas

PS: I sent this as an email to the appropriate parties -- not that I expect it will move mountains but it can't hurt to float an idea up the chain, right?

The Future of Newfoundland?

Fantasy scenario/thought experiment: The time period is sometime in the near future not thousands of years ahead The starting conditions: IF the normies in the UK wake up and kick the Royals to the curb, Canada is forced to switch from a constitutional monarchy over to a constitutional Republic... In this scenario, how would that affect Newfoundlanders Big and small? Would AI be helpful in writing a Newfoundland Constitution? In this scenario, what would go into a Newfoundland constitution if we're to become a new State of the United States of Canada... I just want to hear other thoughtful opinions besides the voices in my head...lol I think the idea of Newfoundland becoming a state would be cool... (personally I always thought the concept of a magical skydaddy telling one family of humans that they're special and should rule over other humans is ridiculous but that's me)

Flashing Red Traffic Signal

At Clinch Crescent in front of the Janeway hospital there is a pedestrian crosswalk that is protected by a flashing red traffic control signal. Under the Highway Traffic Act, a flashing red signal requires vehicles to come to a full stop before proceeding, even if the crosswalk is not occupied. Almost nobody does so at this location. Wouldn’t a flashing amber light be more appropriate at this crosswalk? This is covered by The Highway Traffic Act, Chapter H-3, section 106 Traffic Control Devices, clause (16) (a).

Colon Cancer Screening Program

It says it's for ages 50 to 74. But there are conditions (e.g. family history) where they say they would add someone to the program who is younger. Just a PSA, it's really worth checking out and sharing with those close to you.

Only three out of 121 Nursing Grads offered jobs despite nursing shortage

This is pretty crazy since there is a nursing shortage in our province!! We need to hire our graduating nurses!!

https://rnunl.ca/nursing-students-deserve-better-only-three-out-of-121-grads-offered-jobs-despite-critical-nursing-shortage/

"Despite over 600 vacancies in our healthcare system, only three of these students have received job offers. One student shared that an NLHS manager in central Newfoundland shockingly stated that he prefers hiring private agency nurses because they are easier to make happy. Even more concerning, he admitted to not posting available positions at all, as it is simpler for him to bring in agency nurses. The students expressed their desire to work in Newfoundland and Labrador but are being ignored or disregarded by recruiters. It is essential for NLHS to take recruitment seriously and take immediate action to retain our future workforce and address the nursing shortage."

Halal restaurants in St. John's

Hi you all!!

I want to invite a Muslim friend for dinner but have no idea about the halal food scene in the city (I suppose there are not many halal restaurants).

Do you know a place that offers good food at a relatively decent price? It doesn't matter if it serves food from a specific country or region, only requirement is that it has to be halal.

Where not to eat in St.John's.

I understand their location, surrounded by hotels, but if you're visiting St. John's, or even if you live here, you can do much better than friggin' BP. I get it, they got ALL the games on, it's like eating at McDonald's in a foreign country, you know what you're getting, but the fact is you're getting garbage. Please keep walking, there are so many independent restaurants on the same street.

The Health system is so terrible

I recently injured my knee I didn't think it was too bad but a week later it was still swollen. I phone up my doctor tell them whats wrong and that i'd like to make an appointment. Secretary transfers me to a nurse who is a little rude and tells me to go to emergency. I say I know I can go to emergency but it's not a emergency and I would prefer if I could make and appointment. The nurse told me only ER can do x rays is that true? I don't think I should have to wait hours at the ER clogging it up taking space from real emergencies.
