YouTube celebrity opens local laundry and tanning location

Some of you reading this will likely be more familiar with Roman Atwood than I am. I actually heard of him for the first time this week, but he has over 15 million subscribers and billions of views online. I noticed his name mentioned a few time recently as he has opened a local laundry and tanning location, Smile More Laundry & Tan, on 30th street.

MLS Game

My family is in Newark for an event and staying at a hotel. I know it's tough being a Saturday during Football season, but does anyone know of a kid friendly place that will be showing the Miami/Atlanta MLS game?

1-K Kerosene

Anyone know a gas station that sells Kerosene? Can’t bring myself to pay $12 a gal at Lowe’s/Home Depot.

Update on halloween decorations theives

Now they took 2 of 5 pumpkins! What in the actual fuck is going on around here? My husband lived in Linden in Columbus in the actual fucking ghetto for 20 years and nobody ever messed with his stuff. We have lived in so many places over the past 15 years and nobody has ever touched anything. What in the hell is going on in this town? We don't live in a bad area. Our street is a nice residential street with lots of Halloween decorations and people that take care of their yards. It's not like some super bad area or something. Is Newark just full of all of the white trash?

One more recommendation - good reasonably priced mechanic?

Got some clicking when I turn left, suspect CV joint or boot, plus going through oil, suspect valve cover gasket, PLUS belt started squeaking a bit on cold mornings. So I need a good all around mechanic to look at this and not try to sell me crap I don't need.

Gimme your recommendations please

Dentist recommendations?

Anybody have a recommendation for a good dentist, a REAL one, not the kind that try to get you in and tell you that you need several thousand dollars of work that insurance doesn't cover?

ALSO - avoid Comfort Dental. My son is 18 years old. He has never had a cavity. He was waiting for his insurance to kick in from his new job and had some tooth pain so he went to Comfort Dental for their $39 new patient special. They told him he had 12 or 14 cavities and needed root planing/ scaling. They tried to get him to agree to some $5,000 payment plan and get care credit. They just saw a young kid who doesn't know any better that was a self-paying thought they could get a bunch of money out of him and ruin his teeth by drilling into things that don't need drilled into. Took him to Newark family dentistry and they said there's like one tooth that might need filled and no planning or scaling needed.

I don't know how those people are still allowed to have their license or who I should even report it to but they definitely should be put out of business.

Senior Levy Funding Questions and Information

I’m trying to be an informed voter, so I went to look into the senior tax levy and where the money goes. The money goes in to a pot and organizations apply for grants from said pot. They publish what programs receive funding. The odd thing to me is the vast majority of the funds (nearly 5 million dollars) goes to just one organization. That feels a little suspicious. All of the organizations are private/charity. None of it is government ran.

Please tell me I’m looking too deep into it. Or if you have any real life examples of the money helping people that would be helpful. The program that receives 5/6ths of the money is the Licking County Aging Program. I don’t know anything about this organization. If you could enlighten me that’d be awesome. From a quick google search it appears they mostly do food and meals.

I’m just trying to be a responsible and informed voter.

Hit and run in Newark

To the people who don't know, a very close friend of mine was riding a bicycle on south 21st street in Newark on the night of June 10th 2024. He was hit from behind by a car and was knocked at least 20 feet in the air and he landed on top of the car and rolled over onto the road. He had a massive fracture on the back of his head among other injuries. He was rushed to mt Carmel East in Columbus and was unresponsive on life support showing no brain activity at all and unfortunately his son had to make the difficult decision to take him off life support. The doctors were telling him there is no chance that he will pull through this, and even if he did he would be permanently blind and paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life. So this poor mans life ended at 5pm on June 14th. He was 60 years old. There are cameras all over that road. The Newark detectives HAVE A SUSPECT....THEY HAVE THE FOOTAGE....THEY EVEN WENT AND GOT THE CAR....but still nothing? No arrest? No justice? I'm sure some people will say "that's Newark police for you, they don't do anything" ....but what about the detectives? The prosecutor? Why hasn't anything been done about this yet? If that's the case..if you ever want to get away with ending someone all you have to do is hit them with your car and speed away? As long as they can't prove you was driving then your in the clear? The victim of the hit and run was a commercial roofer for over 40 years, he's helped countless people throughout his life, he leaves behind a son and daughter and he came from a very large family so lots of brothers/sisters/cousins ECT...I hope whoever did this too him, I hope the guilt is eating you alive everyday...you know what you did..there was no way this person didn't know that he colided with him, he went straight up into the air and landed on the hood of the car, and that's on camera. This is my first ever post on Reddit and something that has been bothering me for months now and I just wanted to share this with y'all and get it off my chest..also see if any of you have any advice for me on what I could do to help this case move forward, they have already made a news story about this and interviewed his son. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

New to the area, looking to get involved

I just moved to the area and want to get involved with the community. Does anyone know of any good volunteer opportunities? I want to be involved with nature and conservation efforts but I’m honestly open to a lot of things.

Newark Station Arts and Music Festival 10/4-10/6

The fest that we’ve been hard at work on for months is finally upon us starting today!

I think there is something in the lineup for everyone, but I am specifically proud of the line up for Friday that I was allowed to book. My favorite metalcore/emo bands out of Ohio are all playing.

Following The Entire History of You outside, we’re all coming inside for some emo karaoke with a live band.

This weekend is all free, I think it’s gonna be a blast. I cannot wait to see all of our hard work materialize and I hope it’s a memorable weekend for all who show up.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, swing out and have a good time if you’re not busy. Feel free to ask any questions!

Newark City Schools

My wife and I moved to Newark about 18 months ago from out of state because of a job offer I received. We purchased our first home and had our first child a couple months ago and have been researching the schools. Overall, we have enjoyed living in a smaller town and plan on being here for several years at least, potentially a lot longer. We’ve been researching the local schools and have a couple of questions:

  • We live in the boundaries for Hillview Elementary School and Heritage Middle School and they both seemed to score well on the Ohio Schools Report Card. Are these schools generally well regarded by people in the community?
  • We’ve heard by word of mouth that Newark High School should be avoided if at all possible. Is the high school really that bad? Would it be worth moving when the time comes to a different school district (Heath, Granville, Licking Valley)?

Coffee Shack is awesome

I just moved to the area and stumbled across coffee shack. You don't really see it from the road unless you happen to notice the very small sign on what looks like a standard industrial commercial building over off 22nd. Took my son's girlfriend in there who cannot have gluten and she got a gluten free muffin that they make in house that tasted just like a real muffin instead of chewy styrofoam. Their coffee was great. The people were friendly. If you haven't had a chance to go check out this little hidden gem, I highly recommend it. I was also impressed with commitment to fair trade and organic ingredients and the recyclable materials.

Mental Health support groups?

I showed up to the Depression & Bipolar Support Group put on by MHALC and nobody was there and I started asking question about location because maybe I was at the wrong one. Then this lady started acting super urgent when the situation wasn’t. She then said I shouldn’t be left alone with.

It’s a public support group they probably left because nobody showed up and I was late. Mystery solved I’ll call them tomorrow.

That being said are there any other mental health support groups open to the public and women I may have access too because I do not want that to be the only option for me and community mental health support.

South Side Pride?

I'm at work at the moment, so I apologize, had to lift an image off Google maps, but anyway, it's hard to read, but the little blue sign above the street name says "South Side Pride", and their on about 80% of the street signs in the south end of Newark, does anyone know the story behind this? Like why are these just in yhe south end and, for instance, we don't see "North Side Pride" signs on 13. I have always been curious about this and hopefully, someone here can provide some insight.

Walkable/safe neighborhoods in Newark?

Wife and I are thinking of moving from Granville to Newark when we are empty nesters. Have a HS’er headed to college next year.

What are some of the ideal neighborhoods in Newark that are both walkable and safe? By walkable, I mean real sidewalks and being able to walk/bike to parks, restaurants, etc. (not just walking around a subdivision).

As a side note, how often do people NOT use a realtor in Newark when selling? If this is semi-common, where do u look for these listings?

Thanks for the advice.

TV

I live in west end near LMH. Can anyone tell me if it’s possible to get Columbus TV stations with an antenna. I see a couple dozen antennas on houses around town. I assume they must work but the one I tried did not.

Would You Visit a Cat Café in Newark?

*UPDATE* This gained a lot more traction than I expected! I added one question at the bottom of the survey that gives the option of submitting your email. If you are interested in receiving updates about the project via mailing list, please submit another survey with only your email! Thanks for your time!

Hello Nerk folks! I am trying to gauge interest in potentially opening a cat café in the area and would love your input! If you would be willing to take a brief survey it would help me out greatly and would be much appreciated :)

How do you meet friends here?

My husband and I are in our late thirties and moved here in 2021 because we fell in love with a house. He works from home full time for his career; I'm hybrid between Columbus and WFH.

Our demographic is mid-level professionals who are raising kids. We like cooking, traveling, entertaining, gaming.

But after 3 years, we haven't really made any friends here, other than one neighbor. Most folks don't seem friendly, or they're too religious or too MAGA for us to click. (I'd say we are socially progressive, fiscally libertarian.)

Most of our friends are still in Columbus, so we are considering moving closer. We don't really want to, but life here is lonely for some extroverts. We want to smoke meats on Sunday and have cocktails in the backyard, but we've got no local friends.

Any thoughts on how to make some culturally compatible friends in Nerk?

How much is the fare for the new bus lines?

I dug through the website and there's only the indication that it was free in 2023 and in 2024 they don't know yet.

Does anyone know how much it costs? Is it still free?

Band rehearsal space in Newark area?

Just moved here and looking for a place to practice other than our garage so we don't drive all the neighbors crazy. Are there any places around the area without driving all the way to Columbus that rent out spaces for people who have bands?

Not looking for a recording studio. I'm looking for a monthly rental rehearsal space
