What we can try to offer here is assistance with how the MFP platform can be used, in support of your goals.
MFP was first set up as a website but with the rise of smartphones is perhaps most often accessed as a mobile app for a number of different platforms.
MFP has become the "hub" for a number of different eco-systems, linking fitness trackers like Fitbit and Garmin, smart scales like the Withings/Nokia, and to "health kits" like those developed by Apple, Samsung, and Google. This saves you from having to manually enter a lot of data, and MFP also processes data automatically, for example deducting calories consumed from food, adding calories burned during exercise.
MFP has a number of built in features to make food logging easier too, such as a barcode scanner for packaged/processed food, a large database (which you can add to, if something isn't in it already), and the ability to save recipes and meals of your own for very fast recall.
MFP is customizable: you can edit meal names, adding, say, "snacks" or completely overwriting "breakfast/lunch/dinner" with things like time ranges (midnight to 5am, 5am to 10am, etc) if that suits your lifestyle more.
Depending on the version of the mobile app you're running, go to:
"Settings->Sharing and Privacy Settings->News Feed Sharing" and scroll to the bottom.
"Privacy Center->Sharing and Privacy Settings->News Feed Sharing" and scroll to the bottom.
UNCHECK There are new articles from the MyFitnessPal blog as well as There are new videos from the MyFitnessPal blog.
The MFP activity level setting is a legacy from a decade ago when we didn't have things like smartphones, fitness trackers etc and lets MFP take a wild guess at your daily burn.
If you actually log exercises in MFP, either manually, or by using a fitness tracker (Garmin, Fitbit), or via another app like "MapMyFitness", leave your activity level at "sedentary/not very active" (different wording for same thing, web vs. app) otherwise you'd be "double-counting" calories burned.
This will often show up as a "negative calorie adjustment" when you exercise. Example: you go for a walk or run, Garmin/Fitbit records your heart-rate and distance, pushing it to MFP. MFP reports that you burned 250kcal from that activity, but then adds NEGATIVE 250kcal in your step count. This happens because MFP is already factoring in 250kcal as part of your base activity level. (hence you want to set that to "sedentary" if actually logging activities)
If you aren't logging steps or exercise (manually in MFP, or via another app such as MapMyFitness, or a wearable like those from Garmin, Fitbit, Apple), you might consider a setting other than sedentary, however, be aware these settings make assumptions about your activity and aren't based on actual activity; any day you deviate from MFP's estimate, your log won't reflect reality.
You're in good company, this is pretty common! Other eco-systems are "blackboxes" that crunch their own numbers, and feed data to MFP, which itself is a blackbox that crunches numbers.
Garmin tends to sync fairly painlessly, Fitbit usually does, but things can be dicey with Google Fit, Samsung Health, Apple Healthkit, and VERY problematic with Huawei Health.
If you're using Huawei Health, one proven solution is to use Google Fit as a go-between. Another app that's a bit kludgy but can work is "FitnessSyncer" - it can bridge a variety of fitness apps.
Yet another solution if you don't want to invest in a Garmin wearable is it to try the "MapMyFitness" app to log your steps and activities. Since it's already inside the MFP eco-system, it syncs fairly seamlessly.
Remember how we can't give you health advice? Yeah, we can't tell you if going over your calorie goal is good or bad. We can tell you what MFP is doing with that data.
If you have a goal in MFP of "lose 1lb/week", that represents 500kcal/day (3500kcal/week) deficit (assumption: there are 3500kcal in 1lb of fat).
Theoretically, you could eat 499kcal over each day and not gain weight. What's the catch? Your body isn't a closed system and food calorie measurements aren't precise. MFP is just a tool - try not to stress over the numbers too much.
Repeating the usual disclaimer: we are not healthcare professionals and you should talk to your own healthcare team about your goals - they may have specific food items they want you to track carefully for medical reasons, like salt (for hypertension) or net sugar/carbs (for diabetes).
One area MFP falls down hard is weight predictions. This is because the MFP "you'll weight this much in 5-weeks" estimate is only based on your weight today and net calories today.
Better options for weight monitoring (gain, loss, or maintenance) are the Libra Weight Manager for Android or Happy Scale for iOS. These apps ignore food and exercise and only use weight trends.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
I am using an Iphone and it suddenly stopped working earlier this morning
What a difference a year can make
Oct. 1, '23 - Oct. 1 '24
366 Straight days of daily 5km (3.1 mi) walks
Min. 10K+ daily steps
Min. 1200 mi traveled (1930 km)
Min. 3.6M steps taken
65 lbs (30 kg) loss
A few thoughts . . . .
First, IT'S NOT a diet, it's a lifestyle. Second, get a medical check up if you have access. Third, find your BMR/TDEE. A caloric deficit is more important than a gym membership or exercise. Fourth, be honest with yourself Fifth, make a healthy plan and follow the plan Six, Consistency is key over time. Seven, MAKE FFORTS, NOT EXCUSES (My personal moto)
Get started. 365 days from now, you could be living a different life.
Personally I lost 65 lbs in 12 months, never stepped foot in a gym. Just a caloric deficit, a 1 hour daily walk, 10K+ daily steps.
Hi everyone,
I’m having an issue with the app on Android and was hoping someone here might have a solution. Every time I try to update my macros, I get an error that says:
“Alert: Could not update your macros at this time.”
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
Unfortunately, none of this has worked, and I’m still stuck. I’m using an Android device and the app was updated just before this issue started, so I’m not sure if it’s a bug or something else.
I’ve attached a screenshot of the error message for reference. Has anyone else run into this, or does anyone have suggestions on how to fix it?
Thanks in advance! 😊
I usually finish by day by sneaking a peak at the Completed diary 5 week goal weight.
On average min is usually sitting around 220, which is very content and optimistic for me but that's fine! yesterday I ate the same calories I average (+/-2000cals), with a bit more of a sugar content than usual and my 5 week goal is sitting at 264. I'm so confused. I did very similar movement and consumed similarly.
I've been tracking consistently with MFP since April and have never had such an extreme jump.
Mostly just here to rant bc I'm confused.
Thanks for listening.
Anyone else steps not updating on MFP? It shows the exact same steps I had yesterday. MFP is linked to Fitbit inspire 3
I have manually entered so many recipes in MFP, and I can only see 2 ways to find your recipes when logging: By "most recent" or "alphabetical". Is there an easier way to find your recipes? Can I type in a search button somewhere?
For instance, if it's a recipe I added months ago or starts with "D", I need to keep scrolling to the Next Page until I land on the recipe- it's incredibly annoying.
(I'm also a paying Premium member).
Hi! So lately I've really been into cucumber salads, and I'm trying a new recipe with sesame oil and soy sauce. I finished a serving, and there's cucumber water left over (drawn out by the salt, and the dressing). My question is should I subtract this leftover water from the weight I put in the app?
Thank you!
Does anybody else have an Apple Watch to track your steps??
When I adjusted my weight by 0.4 pounds down this morning my calorie goal jumped from 2320 to 2650. I didn’t adjust my goal weight or pounds per week or activity level or anything like that. I updated the app to see if that would fix it but it didn’t. I googled it and said it might be positive calorie adjustment based on measurements from my IPhone. If this is the case I need to turn that off because I know for a fact that 2650 is too much to loose weight.
Can anyone confirm the diagnosis and offer a solution?
Hey, is anyone else having issues with the app not loading?? I'm using an iPhone 13 pro, on iOS version 18.0.1....app version 24.44.0. I've tried reinstalling the app but it doesn't change anything just stick on the initial screen with the loading circle constantly whirring around. one the one or two occasions its gotten to the login screen, its just frozen and wont let me select login. I can login fine via a web browser so cant be an issue with my account.
I think it's a known issue according to the website but myfitnesspal support are useless...anyone any suggestions or remedies?
I’ve recently noted that when I add a meal/food manually, it’s started reducing the amount of carbs in my diary. Example: I create a food with 66g carbs (11g fibre, 26g sugar), but when I add it to my diary it records 55g carbs. Is this because it’s subtracting the fibre from the total carbs?
Which is better for tracking? I mean total calories stay the same and I focus more on protein than worrying too much about carbs/fats… so do I just leave it and not be concerned?
I never have
This question might be a little confusing, but ill try to explain it the best i can.
So i just got a garmin and it accounts my workouts for the calories lost, so when i see what my maintenece cals is, using calculator.net calorie calculator, do i still need to put in my activity level or do i just enter in little or no exercise since garmin tracks the calories lost?
It does this a lot. It's the most useful feature and it's a real pain when it stops working. Come on, MyFitness pal, sort it out.
I'm trying to hit my protein goals but it's literally not syncing. Ive logged out and logged back in multiple times, and even edited my goals, but it's not syncing. Please see the video.
Would really appreciate any help here. Thanks!
Garmin watch shows 6200 steps after 3 mile morning run. MFT shows the run but not the steps and adjusts a negative calorie count. Other people seem to say just shut off the calorie adjustment, is this just a fact of MFT unreliability?
So any expectation for when we are going to be able to use the AI camera feature (MEAL SCAN) to recognize the meals? That's the sole reason I purchased the app
Hi yall, i gotta question about what goal i should pick, im starting to comit to doing 10k steps a day, regardless of job duties and excercise since its hard to track those into calories, what option should i pick in goals? Or is it better to turn it off and add calories burned via walk tracking app, im using a free one but does anyone have any recomendations on a good tracking for walking or a gadet thats not too expensive? Thanks in advance!
i am 31 M, 5'10", 230 Ibs. My FitnessPal tells me that I can eat up to 2,716 calories per day to lose 1.5 pounds per week. Those calories are 1,760 base + 956 calories burned (according to MyFitnessPal) from walking 20k steps everyday on a treadmill at 2.2 mph.
Do these calculations seem reasonable, or is MyFitnessPal allowing to consume too much?
I'm a 28F and weigh the heaviest I ever have at 148 (now 145lbs) hence why I decided to get the app again and start working out.
At first I set my goal to 125lbs and to lose 2lbs a week, but I've found it tough to stay at 1,200 calories a day, so I changed it to 1lb/week hoping my daily 1,300-1,400 range would be fine, but it only increases to 1,210 lol.
So basically is this app telling me I need to get over the hunger pains and stick to 1,200? Most my adult life I've been between 115-125 and I feel I had normally 1,500 calories a day when I felt I was at a healthy weight 120-125.
Maybe you guys have some tips for me but since I'm jogging too it's kind of tough.
I do log my jogging and still over 100-200 calories most days but I find it too much work to log my body work outs, so I don't and just hope it cancels out.
Edit: LMAO people downboated me? My heart isn't depending on this I just got back in the normal bmi range and sticking to slowly reaching my 120-125lb goal. Chill my people. I think losing 3lbs in a 1-1.5ish weeks and I think that speaks volumes, I won't guilt myself over a bonuses 100 calories or so. I'm hoping to lost the 20-25 pounds by summer of 2025 so I feel I'm on the right track.
Thanks to those who helped!
I've noticed that dozens of foods in the database I've looked up over the past several weeks have calories and nutritionals that seem generally accurate but will be consistently overstated by 10 calories (and their macros will be slightly off as well).
And I usually see this across most if not all of the entries that show up in search results for that particular food.
And it almost always seems to be 10 calories, whether it's a 200 calorie food or a 500 calorie food.
I have to search for one result that's accurate if available or otherwise tweak the portion size to slightly less than 1 to get the numbers to tie.
Anyone else experiencing this, and why is this happening?
This issue has been ongoing for me for a couple of months, making the app unusable. Everytime I open My Meals either through meal logging, or on the settings, it freezes and crashed. I have now gone on to another app that does the same job.
Is there a fix for this, as ideally I wanna stay on MFP.
I am considering purchasing the annual premium plan but was hoping to get opinions and/or feedback in relation to the reliability and accuracy of the calories and nutritional values provided when one scans an item barcode. Thanks in advance
At the end of every day I hit 'complete diary' to check the projections based on that day's calorie intake. So if I'm bang on the money it'll usually be losing 5kg over 5 weeks, given my aim is to lose 1kg/week. But then if I'm 200 calories over then more like 4kg and so on & so forth.
However in the past few days the projections have changed to become a lot more forgiving so even on a day when I was 300 calories over target I'm still projected to lose 5kg over 5 weeks. Anyone noticed a similar change in their app and what could've caused it? My weight has been stable for a while so it's not to do with any recent change on that front and I've not altered anything else.
I used to use the ios app on daily basis and it was great. I took some time off and now whenever i start the app it gets stuck on the loading screen. Its been like that for the last 2 weeks. I tried deleteing and downloading it again, and restarting my phone many times. Are there any solutions to this problem?
I am trying to set my son up on the app as I am wanting him to have more of an idea about what he eats (currently can eat badly and not enough, trying to use this as a tool to help him take ownership rather than trying to force food down his throat), but we have had to lie about his age as you have to be 18. Not too sure why.
He is 12, very active kid, into stacks of sports, goes for runs, and will workout with me on the weekends.
Also wanting to know what a good macro range for him would be. Doesn’t seem to be enough for him so far, he is wanting to grow obviously. Stats as follows Age 12 Height 143cm Weight 33kg
Macros currently base goal Protein 91g Carbs 227g Fat 61g Calories 1820
If anyone could suggest a good range to set it for him that would be most appreciated.
Cheers all
