... the Honorable Judge Me presiding.
I've done well with makeup rehab in the past but have backslid a bit this past year. I'm tired of having so much overall and of having so much I don't love. So this weekend when hubby is out of town, I'm putting my makeup on trial. I'm going to put it all out on a counter and do wear tests and comparisons, then keep only that which I truly love. Wish me luck!
First update: OMG, found three cream blushes that were so dried out there is zero pigment no matter how much I rub my finger or a brush on them. Toss! I shall call a recess in my judge's chambers now until I have a second cup of coffee.
I don't need more lipsticks, I have dozens already. I don't even love the new lipsticks shades she released, but could see some working for me. And to be honest, I think the lipstick case is actually rather uninspiring. But damn if I don't want that dark cherry velvet make up bag 🥺. Can't really justify paying so much for make up anymore, but it's so hard to resist that impulse.
so, we know that makeup and ur face in general change w lighting. the thing is, i usually do my makeup in the bathroom but with the cold months coming and my bathroom not facing natural lighting, i get the worst lighting that just emphasizes a lot of my features in a unflattering way. how should i fix the lighting situtation w barely any bright light outside and with my room not facinf thr light
After owning literal buckets of makeup I’ve finally pared it down to the essentials. I’ve accepted I’m not going to wear that foundation, blush, eyeshadow, etc. All I have is mascara, eyelash curler, eyeliner, perfume, and a spoolie/lash comb to get rid of clumps. The only things not in my pencil case are my two pairs of false eyelashes because the plastic is too bulky to fit in the pencil case but I’m super proud of myself.

I’m not sure how to explain it but I’m wondering if there is an app or program where I can put in the eyeshadow palettes , etc I have and it helps pick out a good color scheme between different palettes? Just something I’ve been thinking about and there’s got to be something similar out there!
I have entirely too much makeup. Most probably can’t be given away because they’re too old, so I need to declutter. My issue is that I have a really hard time throwing these things away because I feel wasteful… Even though they’re just sitting in my collection and taking up space. And they’re things I’m not even using. Like older concealers and lipsticks mainly. How do you get over that mental block and just throw things out?
I need to elaborate - I’m not talking about those who are buying their essential items. This is purely about those who buy hundreds of dollars worth of products (10 lip balms, 5 blushes etc) and we see a ton of comments like “jealous!!!” Or “great haul!!!”
What about this is great or to be jealous of? We have normalized overspending and overconsumption as a society and it is sickening
I say this not from a place of judgement as I am a part of this community as someone who has taken part in similar shopping habits. But it just does not end. Every time there’s a sale for a measly 20% off there is so much of this
I have 30+ powder blushes bought between 15years ago and 5 years ago. I also have loose powder and pressed powder that is about... 5-10 years old.
I haven't worn makeup regularly for the past 5 years and with a new job, want to get back to it.
My conflicting thoughts:
The blush can still be used because they are dry, pressed powder Blush
I'm worried about using old blush - my eyes are sensitive.
Same thoughts apply to the loose and pressed face powder
What would you all do?
Please. Thank you.
Edited: swatching in person would be amazing to determine if I’ll use every shade, but that can’t happen due to living 350km from the nearest Sephora. Without swatching, I shouldn’t buy. Thank you!
hi everyone! just found this sub and omg, after seeing everything i've managed to buy i realized earlier this year i needed to reflect on it lol. but i still have so much stuff - mostly skincare, a lot of samples that i'm having trouble getting through, in part because i forget i even have it and sometimes find myself buying yet another set of eye masks.
looking for any suggestions on an app or way to track the skincare you own. hoping to finally use everything i have. tyia <3
Does anyone know if the color has changed for the Urban Decay Vice lipstick in the 1993 shade?
Comparing the current version in stores versus the one from 2017-2019, I feel like the new one looks a lot warmer. At least, the tester swatched much warmer on my hand than my old bullet.
For the 1 st time in forever I am not participating in the Sephora sale as a rouge member. This will be my last year as a rouge and I couldn’t care less. This is a huge step in controlling my spending and using up products I already have.

Hi, English is my second language. For any misunderstanding, feel free to ask ☺️
For a really long time I was on a low buy and was doing fairly well. About 1,5 years ago I started to change my job.
I needed time to adjust to the work environment and everyone seemed to be friendly. I shared my task with another colleague. After 6 months in my new job my colleague quits his job. (I only worked 2,5 months with him, because he got some time off) He left the company and i got his position. After that time the tone of my supervisor changed and she treated me different then my colleges. (In an extreme bad way. So bad that even other colleges from other teams noticed it and told me how awful it is and tried to cheer me up). I was basically her bunching bag. Her treatment destroyed me mentally and after that time started to buy more make up and skin care exzessives.
After I finally got a new job and resigned I told me coworker and everyone, who noticed that treatment, congratulated me. One of them also told me that my supervisor treated me the same way as my old college.
My bad mental health was triggering me to break my low buy so I could feel better, even if it is for a short while. When I checked up my spending, I noticed that my spending started to become more frequent and exzessiv the longer i stayed in that company. I sadly noticed too late what my job was doing to me. However I am so happy to have a new job and I am cheerful about the new working environment.
Instead to try to patch up my inner pain with new make up or skincare I tried to terminate the cause. Buying new make up is not a solution. I decided to keep my make up anyway as a warning for me and I will start a no buy or rond.
I think some of you are in the same shoes as me and buy make up as a stress relief or to feel better. I know life is not easy or fair but I is not worth it to let it get destroyed because of a toxic environment or a toxic person.
Looking at my collection at the end of the year, I realize that there are some products that I was hoping to touch and just haven't yet. I'm going to take these few months to phase out my project pans or to incorporate products that I haven't been able to put into my daily rotation this year.
Can't wait to show some love to the rest of my collection ❤️
I had to buy a new eyeshadow primer recently because the ones I have are long expired and I don't want to put expired liquid/gel products around my eyes so I justified that purchase. Well to my horror the new one I just received was almost 4 years old according to checkfresh, but unopened. Felt like it kind of defeated the purpose of buying a new one. Had it been something else I probably wouldn't care, but it's for the eyes so I don't want to take the chance.
The company gave me a refund without needing to send it back so no issues there, but I really don't want to use it regardless, it just doesn't feel safe. Why can companies sell old products to begin with? I've not found any laws prohibiting it and it's certainly not the first time it's happened.
It also got me thinking. A lot of companies sell products that are years old, ESPECIALLY heavily discounted products (more reason to stay away from sales). How do you guys feel about that? You don't expect your new product to be four years old already and I mean its not like it doesn't expire just because it's unopened.
Also, just a psa, don't hoard anything cream or liquidish. I see people having 10+ mascaras and they really do expire even if they're unopened. Best case the formula goes off or dries out.
Products that last longer than 30 months after production unopened do not need an expiration date (at least in the EU, the US don't have a requirement at all) but that doesn't mean it's infinite and I really hate that they're allowed to skip it on products you use on your face, especially skincare. The recommendation for mascara is 3 years from manufacturing date, and that's unopened.
I had promised myself (and all of you; check my most recent post in my history) to not buy any more nail polishes before I have worn my entire stash once.
But, when I scrolled my go-to beauty e-store just after making my post, I noticed that they had 70% off of an already good priced nail polish brand.
I am a sucker for a good bargain and started to fill my virtual trolley with so many colours. I have no browns, lets buy a brown. I have no fuchsia, lets buy a fuchsia, and so on. This sale will never come back. Its too good to be true.
At this price point it is not the money that hurts me. It is instead lack of space, overwhelm, the knowledge that I already have 15 years worth of polish and that I would break a promise I made to myself.
I was going back and forth. I as was so close for many days to just press ”buy”. I thought I would buy. But I never did. I was weighing the feeling shopping, receiving and using these new colours (that actually wasnt the shades that I would have gone for at normal price) against the feeling of letting myself down.
I emptied my trolley and instead I spent some time with my stash, mixed some new colours (green + red = brown, I had brown in my stash after all. I just hid well. :-) and made plans what hue to use next.
Hello! Two months ago I posted that I am doing a no buy for 6 months for most makeup categories (especially for those that I find it hard to say no). This is my first update. The no buy is still going strong. I only bought 2 mascaras 2 days ago, one for me and a coloured one to gift to my friend as she mentioned that she would like to try coloured mascaras. Mascara is not on my no buy list, since I only buy one mascara at a time and I dont have issues with buying multiples/overspending on this category. I also got a cool toned bronzer/contour, as I m getting more and more into grey/cool toned makeup and all my cheek products are somewhat warm. This is also not a category for my no buy, as I only have just one other bronzer/contour product and I can easily use them both now.
For me, it is the most difficult to say no to sparkly and multichrome eyeshadows and lip products. I had the urge to buy a quad and a lip product from girlcult and this happened multiple times, but I told myself no each time. If I still want them after my no buy, I can get them then. I also want a new cool tone lip liner, but my rules say that I am only allowed to buy one if I run out of that category entirely. I dont have any cool tone lip liners so far (that is also brown), but I set the challenge that first I have to use up my 2 neutral tone brown lip liners before buying the new one.
I have also had so much fun playing with my existing makeup collection without looking after new things to buy.
If you are also doing a no buy, I believe that you can finish and complete it and if there are any questions, I will be happy to answer 🌺

Item: Merit The Dress Code Lipstick Set
Price: $58
Why I want this specific item: The colours are beautiful and very wearable. I love the Merit lipstick formula!
What comparable items do I have in my collection: I have a couple of nude/brown lipsticks that work well for me, such as the Shiseido Modern Mattes, Charlotte Tilbury, and Mac.
Have I tested this out in person: No, but as mentioned, they seem to be very wearable colours.
What is making me pause/ create a TMO in the first place: I’m honestly only interested in one of the shades. The rest are superfluous. I don't enjoy the idea that I'm buying into the limited edition colour hype, I’ve already shopped enough during the sale and am wary of the longevity of anything that is labelled ‘clean beauty’.
Counting down to the holidays! It’s time for reflection and rolling in a new Lippie this week😆
Some guiding questions for the posts:
My pick last week was a vampy dark colour, Milani matte lip in Sensual. I wore it sheered out over lip balm or under glosses mostly to form a moody neutral lip without being too bold. Greatest achievement was that I managed to overcome my mental block and wore it to office! Looking forward to wearing it occasionally in the future as it is no longer white elephant status.
Rolling in this week is a previous choice, Maybelline Lifter Gloss in Topaz. I am trying to actively pan this gloss by 2024 so rolling in to get regular use. Something more moisturising is also great after a few weeks of matte lips!
Looking forward to seeing what your new entries are! Feel free to join in LAW anytime and take a break if you think you need.

Last night I was playing with my makeup, testing out different lipliner, lipsticks and gloss combinations and I had these realisations.
Formulas are fairly irrelevant. If i have a creamy lipstick I'd prefer to be matte, i can just build up the color and blot it several times. If i have a matte lipstick I'd prefer to be creamy, i can apply Vaseline or lipgloss on top. If i wish a certain lipstick was a gloss instead of a bullet lipstick, i can just apply Vaseline and a swipe of my bullet lipstick on top. Yes it's slightly more work than just swiping on a product, but not that much more work.
I have 2 favorite lipsticks that i can wear without lipliner but most lip looks that I set out to create are going to require maybe 3 products (3 products i definitely already have). There's no point in constantly hunting for "the perfect summer lipgloss/red lipstick/fall lipstick."
The tone of a lip product can be easily adjusted with the help of another. Want to turn your mauve lipstick to brown? Blend with a black lipstick. Want to turn a bright red lipstick cool? Blend with a violet lipstick. Or to turn that bright red to a raspberry red? Blend with a fuchsia lip product. You can even use eyeshadow, though admittedly that's less convenient.
Cream blushes are not different enough to lipstick to justify buying. Cream blushes expire in a year to two years and they give you so much product that you rarely can finish them up in that time. Use your lipsticks as blush. You can set them with powder, it's not that crazy. Mauve/nude/brown LIPLINER looks incredible as blush/bronzer!
There is absolutely no difference whatsoever between drugstore and designer lip products except the price and packaging.
Constantly testing out and playing with my makeup has given me an appreciation of everything that I have and a reminder that I collected makeup because I love makeup, not just BUYING makeup. And I love makeup because I love experimenting with artistry and how products work.
I guess everyone wants to be wearing vampy nailpolish in fall and my signature color was sold out so i bought a dark red nail polish thinking it looked similar, it wasnt! Nail color is something I'm really particular about. I just do not feel like myself if the color is not right. So I decided to DIY. I poured out some of my new nail polish (i didn't feel bad, I'd never wear it anyway) and poured in a bit of black nail polish. The results were a little too black so I poured a bit more out and topped it up with a bright red (again, a color i owned but would never wear) and the results were perfect!
I thought mixing different nail polish formulas might ruin the polish but not at all! The polish is smooth and dried perfectly.
I'm feeling like a scientist.
I normally finish one bottle of this in fall/winter as I use only this color on my nails every week and feeling proud i got to use up some polishes i otherwise would never wear.
I even put a dash of black polish in with a new nail polish i bought, thinking it would be a dark emerald green (it sadly was not) but thanks to the black polish it is now. Never thought to use black polish as a tone adjuster. Game changer.,
So i'm thinking of doing a year of makeup no-buy from December 2024 to December 2025. My goal is to break the pattern of consuming makeup related things as a prime interest and mending my purchase habits. I am pretty satisfied with the size of my stash at the moment so i don't necessarily want to pare down my collection, but i do wanna be someone who pays less mind to makeup releases and purchases. This was also triggered by me calculating the total of all the makeup i have decluttered or wasted till date, which was eye-opening.
Now i was wondering if anyone here who has attempted any length of a no-buy would like to give me some advice and share what changes they found by the end of it. Did anything change? What realizations did you reach by the end of it? How different is your relationship with makeup before and after the no-buy? Please help me out.
