Retrobrighting

Would it be safe to retrobright my 1972 Magnavox Odyssey by leaving its cover (no insides just the cover) in the sun for a while? Kinda new so I would appreciate tips if it is possible, too. My odyssey isn’t in the best condition color-wise so I’d like to restore it too is former glory. Thanks!

Overlays won’t stick

⚠️SOLVED ⚠️Before I state the issue, I’d like to say that I’m a complete noob at this point.

My overlays for my Odyssey won’t stick to my CRT for some reason. I tried many, none stick, is this a TV problem or an overlay problem. Thanks

Time to say goodbye as a mod.

I've been a mod for quite a few of the retrogaming (and other adjacent) subs here for a long time -- even if kind of dormant recently. I love these topics, and how our digital "ancestors" solved hard problems, and how we've build a continuum of interest with their work. I started and even took over a few dormant subs and worked with /u/zadocpaet to help build a broad community here, even appealing to niche systems.

The mod teams are doing a great job, especially /u/Derf_Jagged. I feel like now is a good time to step down. I'm going to continue to lurk, and be a regular user and I wish the subs, the mods, and the users the best!

Skateboard Party for the Magnavox Odyssey

I was reading an article on the history of skateboarding video games, and the article had stated the first skateboard game was on the Magnavox Odyssey. It was called Skateboard Party. However, I can not find anything on this game. Does anyone know any information regarding the game?

Rare run 11?

Finally got one. From reading around, the blak has a run 1, 1a, 1b, and 2. Why does mine read 11? Both inside and the bottom read this.

odyssey Question, Left serve bad?

On my odyssey, which is a run 1 blak, whenever the left player presses reset the ballspeeds to near screen center very quickly and serves from there when reset is pressed. Right reset works as expected, does anybody know what might be causing this? It makes games like submarine quite challenging for the attacker.

Help with Odyssey 2

I just got my Odyssey 2, but I'm having trouble hooking it up. It's the earlier model with the box and the strange video connector. I tried replacing it with an rca cable and plugging it into the rf port like I do with my Atari 2600, but I don't get anything on the screen and no audio. My main tv is a ~2008 Polaroid that Atari games show up perfectly on, my other tv is much newer and Atari games don't work on it but the odyssey 2 makes garbled nonsense so at least it's alive. I can add pictures if you want, please help.

2023 Game Cord Help

I picked up an original Odyssey tonight, has almost everything included. Missing is one of the two styrofoam layers, but has all the pieces. Most important missing is the Game Cord, sigh. Doing a bit of searching I see that it is a proprietary connector. While I have both an Odyssey 2 and an Odyssey 300, both of their pin-style plugs go direct into the console, and I don't think I'd want to pull that off since both work great.

I see a link to using a paper clip, which certainly is odd, but I don't have a spare end plug to try. I see some other soldering mods that folks have done as well.

Does anyone have updated or more modern advice, as most of the advice seems to be 5+ years old? None of the old eBay links seem to work much any more, and I'd love to try getting the console hooked up to my TV.

Is there a good list of the 11 Odyssey cartridges and their behavior anywhere?

Hi!

I'm interested in the differences between the various game cards for Odyssey. Particularly, when I try to search for all the games, I find that many of the concepts for the games are described, but given that different games share cards, I'm wondering what each card ACTUALLY does - for example, the basic Table Tennis game on Card 1 clearly has a dot that moves back and forth and bounces off the dots controlled by the players. But then the Tennis game, which I would think would have the same behavior, uses Card 3. So how do Card 1 and Card 3 make the Odyssey behave differently? Meanwhile, Analogic also uses Card 3, but there's no ball to bounce. It seems like Analogic and Simon Says would have the same behavior where players just control the two dots. I think I'm missing something, so I'd love to read a description of how each card behaves. Is that out there anywhere?

Is it worth it?

I came upon a working Odyssey in almost amazing condition. It has all of its components and the box has respectable wear and tear.

It still has the manual and I’m pretty sure it may have still had the batteries in it from the 70’s which It has some corrosion around the battery springs but still works completely.

Does anyone know what I could do with it? Can I sell it for a decent price? Or do I just hold on to it until it’s museum worthy?
