Hardhats as flak helmets?

We all know that state militaries first adopted metal helmets to protect the head from fragments and shrapnel. Widespread artillery use meant a lot more material falling on the heads of combat troops. Helmets also protect the head from bumps, blunt attacks, and any other strike that could cause injury, although ballistic helmets that can stop a bullet are a relatively new invention.

Workers wear hardhats for similar reasons. They are rated according to ANSI standards and required (in the USA) by OSHA on job sites with a rise of falling objects. This kind of helmet seems suitable for protecting the head from the spall and frag present on a battlefield. Perhaps someone looking to arm themselves for combat on short notice could get an ANSI type 1 or 2 hardhat if military grade head protection is not available.

A hardhat could also prove useful outside of a gunfight, such as during a protest. Riot police wear helmets, so it would be wise for demonstrators to protect their own melon. Many of the 2020 Hong Kong rioters used construction hats for this purpose.

Please tell me what you think and if my logic is sound. I don't know very much about combat or tactics so this post is basically baseless conjecture. I am thinking of buying a hardhat because I don't have the means or use for a ballistic helmet at the moment, but that could be completely foolhardy. Let me know.

I've seen a lot of misinformation floating around about gas masks and beards so I wanted to tackle that. This video's an in-depth discussion on why gas masks don't work with beards.

I feel so alone with my interests because of the right-wing politics in the gun communities.

It's like you can't get away from it. It's just baked into all gun content these days. Print Shoot Repeat is currently the only guntuber I've seen who wants trans rights AND gun rights. Everything is just politics. I stopped watching Garand Thumb, the Balaclava dude, and Brandon Herrera because of their constant "woke" culture war bs. So tired of it. I feel so alone and I feel like I can't watch SHTF prepper shit and proper combat tactics without knowing that these guys who are talking are training to fight against us.

I made a quick tutorial on how to install the glasses inserts on the M50, C50, FM53, FM54, etc. since it's kind of a pain and there doesn't seem to be any other tutorials on it.

Here's my review of the Avon FM53. While I think it's got some excellent capabilities, most people don't need those capabilities and should just get a C50 instead. However, if you do need what it offers, it's really great.

The Good:

Overall feel is good compared to other holsters I have from other companies. Their Kydex is very rigid which is ideal for an IWB holsters.

Despite replacing the belt clip, the one that came with it seemed totally usable.

The lead time was truthful. Shipping was reasonable considering they’re west coast based and I’m east coast.

The holster is completely usable, but there are some gripes that keep it from being perfect for me.

The “Bad”:

I messaged the customer service when I was selecting the belt attachment to make sure the “TacWare Clip” mounting holes would line up with the Discreet Carry clip I had. There are no pictures of the belt attachment options on their site, so I had to Google their options to see what they looked like. It was true that my clip would fit, but the TacWare clip is significantly thicker than the DC clip so I need thicker rubber spacers that were not provided. The provided rubber spacers made the screws bottom out before the DC clip was tight. Additional spacer sizes and maybe some replacement screws and bolts would be nice to include with the holster.

The wing cannot be tight enough because the bolts for it also adjust the overall holster tension. Tightening the wing completely will make it a struggle to remove the gun from the holster. Thicker spacers or shorter screws could change that, but I haven’t been able to test due to not having other spacers or screws. The lack of wing tightness makes the holster shift more in your pants.

The inside of the Kydex is WAY too textured. Other companies have an almost glossy inside that aids in holstering and drawing. The inside of this holster is almost more textured than the outside making it more difficult to draw thus requiring you to lessen the holster tension which makes the wing looser which makes the holster shift more and you can see the problem. I’m assuming this will be resolved overtime with use, but the inside of the Kydex could just be smoother from the start. I know this isn’t just my holster or this current batch of Kydex because I ordered a holster for my wife’s P365 earlier this year and it was the same rough inside.

Conclusion:

I went to the range today and tested the holster with my favorite CCW drills. The holster shifting from the wing makes consistent draws more difficult. I found a sweet spot with the tension, but I expect the screws to loosen over time. The texture inside the holster hurt consistent draws as well. By the end of my trip I had powdered Kydex all over my gun, inside the holster, and inside my pants. Enough to be noticeable, but not enough to cause a malfunction or anything. Other than that, the holster did it’s job. It held my gun (mostly) securely in my pants and protected the trigger from any negligent discharge. The padding I added made it more comfortable to wear especially when sitting. I recommend some kind of padding for any IWB holsters. The velcro is just there for when I carry with a fanny pack (pics included).

I’d rate the overall holster experience from ordering to range a 7/10. It’s a fine holster from a company with values that I respect. The holster design could use some improvements. Honestly just making the holster smoother on the inside would immediately make this an 8/10. Despite my personal gripes I would recommend Guerrilla Tactical especially for the P365 w/ TLR-7 Sub since that specific fit isn’t that common yet.
