Learning mandarin tones

ive been learning mandarin in school for like 3 years now (albeit very slowly), and ive just realized how much my tones suck. all of my chinese teachers never taught me how to differentiate and pronounce the tones, so i just read the pinyin and thought it was that simple. my tones are all over the place, and i also can’t hear them in speech. i already know quite a lot of words, and i can speak in full sentences, but i feel like there’s no point if i can’t even pronounce the tones correctly. ive searched online how to learn them, but all the videos are targeted for complete beginners. i really don’t want to go back and relearn every word i know, so does anybody know how to fix this?

Mandarin study buddy?

Hey, l've been exploring the idea of learning Mandarin, but I'm not sure which where to begin with this.

I'd like to make friends with a native speaker or someone who's been through the process of learning Mandarin. Ideally it would be daily conversations in English while slowly introducing the Mandarin to the conversation. If this sounds good to you send me a message :)

What to learn first, Japanese, Mandarin or Russian?

Hi I plan on learning all these 3 languages and I for sure know how hard they are. So I wanted to ask if it makes it easier for me if I learn them in a specific order. Also I wanted to ask with what it would be best to learn those three languages. I already speak German, French and English but I learned all of those at school and never learned a language in my free time and my parents won't pay for courses either I guess.

I created an iOS app that lets you learn Mandarin by taking photos!

Hey everyone!

I'm excited to share that I've developed an iOS app called Lingosnap that makes learning Mandarin fun and interactive by using your camera.

Here are some of the awesome features Lingosnap offers:

  • Snap pictures of objects around you and instantly learn their Mandarin names, associated words and colour-coded sentences.
  • Practice with various exercises such as matching words, arranging sentences and speaking sentences.
  • Store a library of personal words and photos

Snaps!

Love to know your thoughts about our app! Thank you so much :)

Should I Use Stardew Valley or Similar Games to Learn Chinese?

Should I Use Stardew Valley or Similar Games to Learn Chinese?

Hey everyone!

I’ve been learning Chinese for a while now, and I’m currently at 448 characters read over 10 times, 770 characters read less than 10 times, 891 words less than 10 times, and 673 words read more than 10 times on Du Chinese.

I was thinking about using Stardew Valley or a similar game to help improve my reading skills, but I’m not sure how effective it would be. Have any of you tried using video games as a language-learning tool, specifically for Chinese? If so, did it help? How did you go about using the game as a learning resource?

Also, I’m looking for OCR screen translation software similar to Pleco, but something that works on a laptop. I’ve heard of a few options but am unsure which ones are reliable and effective for translating in-game text or other content on screen. Any recommendations?

Thanks for any advice!

online game event for Mandarin Chinese learners

My friends and I regularly hold online card game events for language learners all over the world! This Saturday, the 21st of September, @ 9am EDT (which is New York City time), we will have an event specifically for Mandarin Chinese learners! It is very likely that high level or native speakers of Mandarin will be joining. I also plan to join because Mandarin is my TL.

Would you like to join us to play?! And put your knowledge of Mandarin to the test?!

We welcome all people. And we welcome all levels. Our learning environment is a very inclusive and supportive one. If you're a native speaker of Mandarin, of course we welcome you, too!

So if you'd like to try something new, which can inject some excitement into your language learning, just leave me a comment on this post or DM me! : )

Recommendations for learning Mandarin with knowledge of Japanese/linguistics?

I have a linguist's knowledge of Chinese and speak japanese after years of study. I'm currently learning mandarin using the Mandarin from the Ground Up podcast (i love it so far). I want some materials that are more intensive though. I want to use Mandarin as a way to also bulk up my japanese kanji skills, and I feel like I can handle more "intense" linguistic analysis of (real, authentic, non-artificial) chinese in order to better understand it, rather than simple "listen and repeat" exercises.

Does anyone have recommendations for this specific case?

English to Mandarin

I’m trying to translate this into Mandarin: “dismissing all of the past with a laugh, let’s grow old together” or “put the past behind us and grow old together with me”. Is this correct: 万腿付之一笑共偕老.
