On June 17, r/TheExpanse and r/LangBelta reaffirmed our community support of an ongoing blackout in protest of Reddit's predatory API pricing changes. See the community discussion and voting results here: imgur.com/a/vfCxzpL
We plan to continue following the well-considered, empathetic decisions of our community members, checking in regularly. Our next community-wide discussion will be on Tuesday, June 20.
Thank you!
This sub is for discussion of Lang Belta, the "Belter Creole" language from The Expanse. We're open to both "book Belter" and "TV show Belter", but there's much more material available for the latter. (Daniel Abraham recommends Show Belter!)
The following are good places to get started learning Lang Belta:

Why does it have an accent? I feel it’s coming from Spanish where it doesn’t need it (and if it needed one, it would be on the first syllable, like pínche).
Why on earth would that word evolve to have the stress syllable at the end (unless the é means a different thing in belter and not the stress syllable?). It doesn’t roll off the tongue.
My Mexican brain is always nitpicking on this when I read it. I actually don’t remember if that word is used in the series to see how they pronounce it there and don’t have the audio books.
Help please! I'm new and need a starting point...
So I am in a DND campaign and wanna use Lang Belta just to have my character actually use another language for when he's, you know, speaking another language.
Not full sentences, just a few words.
I stand the problem of being completely unable to find any reference to what the Lang belta word for "Surface" is
Hello, I was wondering if you folk have some ideas for pirate dialogue that I could use. I am trying to create an RP character in the game, Elite: Dangerous, and I need some dialogue response options when attempting to take peoples hard earned credits in order to feed my starving children. I need several dialogue options that can be sent through in-game chat using macros for the different kind of scenarios that might unfold.
The typical loop that repeats itself with potential scenarios:
Another thing that could happen is the entire loop is interrupted at any time by system security intervening.
One more thing to note is that they should probably not be in complete Lang Belta, unless they are phrases being said to myself, as the other player will likely not understand. So need some convincing sounding broken English where appropriate.
I do plan to start learning it myself, I just thought this could be interesting and give me motivation to learn.
I wanted to post this everywhere I could, as the momentum is not exactly fast on this one. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thenacellecompany/the-expanse-collectable-action-figures
Hey all!
I want to translate the sentence ‘This too shall pass’ to belter creole. So far I’ve gotten ‘Xidawang oso gonya pass’ out of a belter translator tool. However, I read that belter creole is a “zero-copula” language, meaning ‘shall’ probably wouldn’t be used. Any experts here who can make an educated guess? An alternative saying with similar meaning could also work potentially.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: chatGPT suggests: Dis too shalowda pass
"I used to say that I had a ship."
"Mi ta tili showxa mi ta tenye kapawu."
Is this correct or is there a relative pronoun I can use?
Oye! This is my version of Lord's Prayer in lang Belta, i only used existing words, the words i could not find a direct translation i just borrowed from english ("Kingdom", "bread", "sin" and "as" but the correctness of those words in Lang Belta is speculative), "fatna" is derived from the existsing word "matna", "fogif" is a calque based on existing words "fo" and "gif". i Used "kuxaku", which means "space" for "heaven". The word "meyo" ("honor") is used (in verbal form) instead of "sacred /hallowed" This is my first post. I may have made some mistakes, if so, feel free to suggest and correct. Taki taki

Long story short, I have been naming the Outside Kitties outside my house Belter words, and there's this really brave kitten, so I would like to know what Brave means, or some other alternative,
Taki!
A while ago, another post brought up the idea of creating an incubator for Lang Belta on Duolingo in order to make it easier to learn. But the idea didn't make it very far, and other users mentioned maybe an official guide to Lang Belta could someday take its place.
Since we still don't have either of them years later, are there any prospects of an official language guide or an online course sometime in the near future? And if not, would there be potential interest in starting an incubator for Lang Belta on Duolingo?
Wit comedi, showxa mi.
I stream on Twitch.tv, and I wanted a way to distinguish actual human viewers from mere bot accounts. So I am building a app I run locally that I have loaded in my right hand monitor when I stream. It includes a view of my stream on top (but only when live), Twitch chat on the left, and on the right the Botfinder that loads my current viewers and colour codes their names along with displaying some useful symbols.
I just finished rewatching The Expanse and decided to theme my application with a style inspired by the show, and then decided I would try to add some labels that are in Belta. I would like your suggestions and/or corrections on what I should use for each of the labels. I had to coin some of my own words mind you, but perhaps there are already existing terms I didn't find. Any help, criticism or reponse happily received :P
Labels: SEKÁNG REDZHULTA "Scan Results" FIT XITIM "Refresh Video" SHOWXA XITIM "Refresh Chat" SEKÁNG XITIM "Refresh Scan" NAX DE XITIIM "Last Refresh" TENSHAWALA "Viewers" ZAKOWALA "Moderators" BOTING "Bots"
Edit: Note the "LIVE" on the top is incorrect obviously. I just haven't put some code in place to change it back as soon as I am no longer live. This is still a WIP
Tensha: Da kapawu gonya go wit naterash ematim.
Attention: The ship will soon be on the float.
Our post asking the community’s opinion about the protest beginning tonight resulted in a resounding call to go dark for at least 48 hours. We’ll turn off our transponder and Epstein drive and make like a hole in the water space.
The Expanse Discord is the place to be to help decide when we should come back online. There will be widebeam announcements when we have a decision to make or something changed.
The Discord is also a good place for having the Expanse conversations we’ll be missing out here.
Given all the free time you’re suddenly about to gain, I can’t help recommending trying out some Lang Belta. We’ve got a section on Discord all about learning it, and the little Memrise course is a fun place to start. I hope to get to say oye to a few new people this week!
Or, if you end up starting a reread or a rewatch, it’ll be good to hear your thoughts.
If there’s anything you’d like to ask or say before we go dark, this is your moment. No untagged spoilers, please!
Oye!
Check this out! Just found a Memrise course for Belta Creole. It seems on-point from what I’ve seen. I’m still totally new to the language and I plan on learning it with hand gestures for sake of another form of communication.
Im gut, keyá?
Thanks to photos taken at an exhibit by u/isonomist, we've got a shot of a nifty backpack.
It reads,
MEDIBELTA (This looks more like a company name than a word to me, but interested in discussing)
KIT FO FOWSH MEDI
BERA FO YUSH XÍXITIM
We're discussing over on discord, but here's what's up so far:
And this is interesting!
Here's a cropped (to avoid spoilers) panel showing our new "best friend":
According to the comics' author Andy Diggle (Twitter, 20-01-2023), it means botanist.
Yam seng!
I've been looking and for the life of me, I can't seem to find a word for Fly. I feel like this would be a pretty common verb in the Expanse so I am sure I am just missing it.
Title says all, i'm not quite sure how you'd translate that, i'm struggling with the word order I was thinking "bitnesh kopeng-ong" or maybe "bitnesh ong-kopeng"
Lame post, but I'm trying to find a way to day dream or ideation, aspiration, something like that.
Is there a word for that? Merry Xmas pampa
I’m trying to translate “the ending has not yet been written”. So far I have “da ent na ye finyish {written}”. My questions: how does the passive work? How is the verb “write” translated? Taki!
I've been having a lot of fun writing Belter-themed jams lately. Anyone here interested in writing some with me?
I'm down for any form of teamwork I think. Whether you want to write music, write lyrics, sing, or even just critique what I'm working on and help me with song direction.
Ke showxa, Beltalowda?
