A Man of Kent comes from the area to the east of the River Medway and a Kentish Man comes from the west of the river.

The division may have arisen when the Jutes, who settled in Thanet over 1,500 years ago, moved into the area we know as Kent, calling one part East Centingas and the other West Centingas.

A few hundred years later, it appears that the Men of Kent resisted William the Conqueror more stoutly than the Kentish Men, who weakly surrendered!

Afterwards, according to Alan Major in 'A New Discovery of Kent Dialect', the bravery of the Men of Kent made them proud while Kentish Men were believed to be weak-minded, and so a keen rivalry developed.

Today, Kentish Men and Men of Kent guard their birthright with great pride.

You should try this if you're getting a pup any time soon

A friend of mine created this detailed dog training series a couple of years ago and I feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves. She's a fully accredited dog trainer and built this course over several years in order to save new dog owners money. Hiring a private trainer for your pup normally costs $100+ per hour and taking them to puppy preschool is typically $150 for 6 classes that just go over the basics (sit, stay etc.). Not to mention if you want to take your dog to the more advanced classes after puppy preschool it's hundreds more. She made this course so she can spend time with her pups whilst still helping people train their dogs.

Adrienne teaches everything covered there in this one course so you can teach your pup in the comfort of your own home, at your own pace and for a fraction of the price. The best part is, she works with you as you teach your pup, you can reach out to her whenever you run into any issues and she'll help. So you still get the 1 on 1 expert opinion that you'd get from a private trainer, all you have to do is send her an explanation or video of the problem you're trying to address or issues in teaching that you're having.

Delete this post if it's not allowed but I just thought this might help some new dog parents :)

Anywhere for an early lunch in Gravesend?

Hi there,

Passing through Gravesend next Saturday and was wondering if there is anywhere I can grab some lunch around 11 am, I’ve looked at a few places but they either open after 12 or are still serving breakfast at that time.

Accessible Countryside

My wife has been housebound having had knee surgery but she is getting better. She can walk with crutches but not too far.

She wants to get out of the house and likes the countryside.

Where is the best place to go where you can park up and enjoy nice views without walking too far?

Cost of Living

Hi everyone.

I am 27M, single, from overseas and was given an offer to work as part of the Kent Community Health NHS Trust. My expected salary after NI, tax, and NHS pension contribution is around 33k annually. The base of operations is located at Folkestone, but I am expected to travel almost everyday to do the job (visiting patients in their residence).

I will most likely need to lease a car, so I’m also considering that as part of my monthly expenses, but I do not have a general idea on how much that’ll cost me.

Is this salary enough for me to live modestly around Folkestone or other areas in Kent? Please let me know your thoughts before I accept the offer lol

Best orchards to visit ?

Hi

I'd love to visit an orchard, maybe (doesn't have to be) offering a u-pick, while I'm based in Tunbridge Wells in April. It would have to be doable via public transportation as I won't have a car.

***I think I'll do this as a day trip from London as April is too soon for fruits to be blossoming - but mid-June is the right time for strawberries, etc

Can anyone suggest one or two?

Thank you!

I hate Kent heres why.

I swear I've had 3 gunshots, 2 stabbings, a weed farm next door and a car crash into next door this has all happened this year outside the back of my apartment. I'm scared of even going out the back of my apartment it's been in the news before.

Kent is the worst place to live from all the places I've lived.

Moving to Kent

A few weeks ago I posted asking for potential roommates in the Kent area.

I have narrowed my choices down to Whitstable, Deal and Folkestone, also open to Westgate/Margate

Looking to move around February.

I work in a school as a cover supply/higher level ta, my rent budget is 500-600pcm.

I’m 35, I like pub outings on a Friday or Saturday, watching films, keeping fit (this has been difficult this past year due to an injury) and occasional outings to London

I’m looking for a housemate that’s a professional or PhD student aged 21 to 40.

Any recommendations for nice zoos around?

We recently moved out of London and looking for nice places to take out 9 month daughter on weekends. Zoos could be nice, I thought, but London Zoo is a bit far now (2.5h drive no thanks), so maybe there are closer options… We tried Chessington last month and it is nice but it was more an funfair than a zoo…

Any ideas of where to go please?

Easter 2025

Can I assume that everything will be shutdown from Good Friday through Monday, including restaurants?

I'll look on the individual websites for places I have on my list to do, but it just hit me now that I'll be in the UK for Easter, and I was curious as to what to expect

I know that schools are off for 2 weeks - are there places I should avoid ? I image seaside towns must be especially busy...

Thanks!!

Broadstairs Food Festival - Easter

So I'll be in Kent (Tunbridge Wells) for April 2025, inclusive of the dates for the Broadstairs Food Festival

I already planned to combine Margate/Broadstairs in one day, but I love good, and I love food festivals. While I don't love crowds, I'll get over it, lol

Is this a good festival to go to? I plan on going to the Malton Food Festival in May, when I'm in Yorkshire, so this wouldn't be my last chance to attend a food fest.

If you guys recommend it, are there any foods you especially like that I should try?

Thank you!!

Where to live?

I work near Falconwood station, family in Gravesend, Tonbridge & Herne bay. My partner commutes into London for meetings 2-3 times a week. Our budget is 400,000. We’d like to buy a 3 bed house ready to start a family.

Our priorities are

  • affordable to commute from
  • not high in crime
  • good parks for walking the dog
  • decent gym/ pubs nearby

We’ve been looking at houses but everywhere seems quite run down or would cost a fortune to commute from. With this criteria where would you buy?

Why is the jump from a 3 bed to 4 bed so expensive? New build.

As the question says, why is the difference between the price of a 3 bed new build so big compared to a 4 bed new build. On our development, 3 beds were £350-395K, but a 4 bed was £475-500K+ Crazy

Moving to Kent but work in London. Cheapest locations for the commute?

Hey everyone! Title says it all, I work in London but moving to Kent in a few months. I looked into train prices in places like Ashford, Canterbury, Hastings but it’s all crazy expensive (700-900 a month). Travel time is also a consideration, I don’t want to spend 4 hours a day commuting. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

Moving to Faversham next week

Really excited! What are people's favourite things about Faversham? Also really keen to find a community of people to meet around Faversham as most of my friends are still London based :)

Kent Wedding Venues?

Hi, my partner and I are looking to get married in either autumn 2025 or spring 2026 but are struggling to find a nice venue in (preferably) or just outside of Kent, UK that’s affordable and can have the ceremony at the same place as the evening. We are looking for around 80 day guests (my partner has a big family!!) so I would really appreciate some suggestions! 😊

We have been looking at a few prices online and some are coming out 14K or the highest 22K which seems crazy for one day, especially on the venue alone. It may be wishful thinking but we are hoping to find somewhere around the 7-9K margin. My sister’s wedding a few years back cost 7500K for the ceremony, meal, and evening but the venue no longer hosts weddings due to the hotel being occupied for other reasons.

Please share your suggestions! Thank you in advance :)

Moving from Medway to Broadstairs

Currently live in Medway but both my partner and I work near Thanet and thinking of moving down that way.

We’ve found a house that we’re thinking of putting an offer on near Dumpton Park Drive in Broadstairs.

A quick google search says Thanet can be quite deprived (not that Medway is that great either!) so bit worried about crime etc. We have a toddler so we want to move to a nice area with decent schools.

Has anyone made the move to Broadstairs from Medway or similar and happy they moved? Looking for people’s general experiences!
