A Man of Kent comes from the area to the east of the River Medway and a Kentish Man comes from the west of the river.
The division may have arisen when the Jutes, who settled in Thanet over 1,500 years ago, moved into the area we know as Kent, calling one part East Centingas and the other West Centingas.
A few hundred years later, it appears that the Men of Kent resisted William the Conqueror more stoutly than the Kentish Men, who weakly surrendered!
Afterwards, according to Alan Major in 'A New Discovery of Kent Dialect', the bravery of the Men of Kent made them proud while Kentish Men were believed to be weak-minded, and so a keen rivalry developed.
Today, Kentish Men and Men of Kent guard their birthright with great pride.

Craving a roast today. Where does the best do we think?
Was driving on the M20 this morning, and noticed a flash when reaching average speed check zone that’s set to 50mph that begins at Ryarsh For some reason there was a massive flash that I didn’t understand the reason for I was sticking to the speed limit, but I am under the impression that average speed cameras don’t flash? Unless it’s for something else that I was not aware of. It was a single front facing flash, very difficult to not notice
As in any near by side roads near the station that’s free on weekdays?
So I'm planning on staying in the UK for a few months, and thinking - based on comments in other Reddit boards (general UK) of making Tunbridge Wells my second base
I realize that "best" has many meanings. I'm looking for towns and villages to explore, with pubs, places for cream teas, near historical places of interest, beautiful surroundings, etc.. I'm just looking to get to know the area to the best I can in a month or so. Anything near water is a huge bonus
I'm not married to TW, so if there are options for a base - I'm ready to hear
I won't have a car - I know that limits me, and that's ok
Thank you so much!!!
Good morning everyone,
A bit of an urgent one! I am in need of 2 witnesses for my wedding on Wednesday at 10am in maidstone - oakwood house
Myself and my partner moved down from London and we don't have anyone in the area we can ask.
Our London friends/family don't know we are getting hitched.
We are doing the very basic registration of marriage. I'm pregnant with our 3rd and we will literally be doing the school run and driving from ashford to the registry office.
If anyone wouldn't mind being a witness or knows someone I can reach out to I would really appreciate it
Thank you
Hey All!
This past year my father has been battling cancer and it's been a long hard road. He's through his treatment now and I want to do something nice for him to celebrate. Family for his is incredibly important. He was born in 1952 in Pennsylvania, United States. The only blood relatives he has left are me and his sister; but all of his family (prior to I believe 1870 or so) was from Kent, England (I believe specifically maidstone). His grandfather was the first generation in the US so my father is incredibly proud and interested in his English heritage.
I have been working on trying to track down his family tree but have reached a dead end.
The last detailed marker on the chart I have is James Iggulden Sage (1797-1878) born in Kent, Christening was in Deal, Death was in Eastry, and burial was Walmer (unsure of which cemetery).
James's wife was Fanney Spain from Walmer (born 1807, no idea when she died or any info on her).
From what I've seen James father was named John Sage and his mother was Catharine Curling but I have no info on them besides that they should have all been from Kent.
I am not sure if anyone has any leads to cemetery info or any public info I could use to get further on this family tree. It would mean the WORLD to my father to know more about the "Sage Family" heritage.
If anyone has any leads or wants to check out my family tree so far to maybe spark some info it would be amazing. Also if anyone happens to be part of the Sage Family, Curling Family, or Spain family and may have some ideas I'd love to know! It's so hard for me to find info for Kent all the way across the pond.
Another one from Folkestone - under the viaduct going into the Roundhill Tunnel
Hi,
I was coming onto the M20 from the A229 to go to Maidstone/Ashford. It said 50mph on the A229 and when I got onto the M20 I assumed it would be 70mph (due to the Blue motorway sign, variable speed limit warning and my Waze). However there seems to be a speed limit camera there. Is this for 50mph or 70mph? I’m worried I got flashed as I was doing about 61 to keep the flow of traffic as everyone seems to be doing around that speed. What’s the chances it did flash me? If it did I might dispute it due to the poor signage. Thanks
Since almost everyone does 80-90 on the motorway (here in the south/south east at-least), aren't the people doing 70, whilst technically in the right, actually a hazard?
This is from Danton Lane above Folkestone. I think I could see some lights on the French coast too.
I used to play pool for my university a few years back, but I'm looking to get back into it back home. Does anyone have any ideas on places that have proper tables, i.e. Not your typical table in the corner of a pub?
Anywhere in the T. Wells, Tonbridge or Maidstone areas would be great, social evening and/or local league recommendations also welcome!
Hello All,
We are looking for our next home (moving out of the Medway Towns so in before all the comments that say anywhere is an upgrade!)
So we’ve been living well within our means over the last ten years and have a toddler so naturally are looking for an upgrade into something a bit more special.
Collectively our salaries and savings will afford us a £900k - £1m house so we’re currently considering locations. Ive been told by agents that at these prices and within Kent, homes do not sell immediately so there is always room for negotiation going up to £1.2m in some cases.
We’ve decided on a shortlist of West Malling, Meopham and Bearsted for now.
For comparison, we did think about moving to Sevenoaks but were turned off by the size of house and value for money when compared to the areas quoted.
Would love to hear your opinions and any other suggestions in and around the area as we’re actively looking for suitable locations.
Thanks,
Me and my girlfriend have known each other for 6 months now and we're really progressing and love each other. '23M' and '23F'
I asked her about if we were to ever get married and the problems started rising. She says she wouldn't want to get married with me living in my same apartment that I live in now and that she'd need a "new build".
I tried to explain that love should be unconditional and she said love isn't unconditional blah blah. I said it could be conditional but in the sense that if I deny you love then fine , if I cheat , if I'm dishonest , things like that. But as a couple we're meant to compromise and be understanding with each other. What happened to that? I feel like she can have standards but I'm also correct in a way. If you really love someone you are willing to work on it together. I live in affordable housing and I'd like to save , not live pay check to paycheck In a fancy high rise apartment like she wants. I feel like I'm being reasonable. I explained to her that we'd be able to save money go on holidays. I'm starting to think maybe we just won't work out. What does everyone think?
Kent used to be like the pride of England, now it's just a sad place to live in. We should clean up the place, including beaches, add some like holiday resorts and new landmarks and show everyone in the UK that we are the best county
Edit: I wasn't going to put much on here n whatnot because I wasn't too bothered, but by holiday resorts I mostly meant for the locals so they don't have to sit at home w nothing to do without spending a fortune.
Some of you guys are right yeah we defo need more hospitals, and whatnot.
Although something that we could do without asking the council, which probably wouldn't work because we all know unless millions of people are involved no political power will answer to you, is probably some sort of public community association to host events and polls/votes on ways to better the community as the people ourselves.
Also for reference any new buildings and stuff does not mean modern architecture. Frankly I think modern architecture looks horrible
Also we should get rid of the pigeons
Hi everyone.
So my husband and I are deciding to move to Crayford, Kent. Can I anyone please tell how is Crayford? is it a good place to live?
Any of u lot into this and can help out?
I’m not sure how much interest this will get but I am starting a local community group for dungeons and dragons. It is based on discord and is for players and DMs to get together to play games short or long term in person or online! Let me know if you would like to be added 😁
Hi everyone!
I’m developing farm advisory services tailored to Kent farmers, focusing on data-driven tools like soil analysis, weather planning, and crop yield predictions. To make sure these services meet your needs and are priced fairly, I’ve put together a quick, anonymous survey.
It only takes a few minutes, and your input will directly shape services designed to make farm operations more efficient and profitable.
I’d really appreciate your feedback—thank you in advance for your time!
If you aren't a farmer but knows someone who is, please share the link.
I’m planning to go on a solo trip around Kent in the Spring/Summer time next year when I’ve finished college for the year. Which places would you highly recommend me on going to?
Give me up to at least 3 to 4 places
I know there's a lot of cameras here in the southeast, but seriously, consider the fact that British law states
Even if you speed everywhere, you'd have to be pretty thick to get done by a camera
In France they legit put the cameras in dodgy spots and often hide them too, but the French don't complain nearly as much
First time visiting Ashford, I have solo travelled all over the country without much of any issues but today God knows why I decided to check out Ashford as it was the only big Kent town I hadn’t been to yet and MY GOD! I don’t think I’ve ever been followed, threatened or racially abused this much in my life, and I’ve lived in and also have visited plenty of places people would consider to be dumps. I’m sorry if I offended any decent person that lives there by calling it a dump but I had such an absolutely awful experience that I wouldn’t go back there if the ice caps melted and Ashford was the last piece of land on earth, absolute DUMP!
Send me your suggestions I wanna see what colours this land has to offer.
(Update) Thanks so much for all these suggestions! I went on a lovely walk with my gf in the hills near Chilham
What was it like? Would you recommend it? And what was the wait time like before you got a ceremony. Thank you :)
American here
Currently driving around England and man I'm so shocked how fast y'all drive on the freeway
I'm cruising at a steady 75mph and car after car zooms past me
I would estimate people are easily going 90mph, 100mph, even 110mph
Are there just no police on the freeways?
Back in the states there would be police cars all over the freeways and thus most people wouldn't go any more than 10mph over the limit most of the time (freeways usually have 65-70mph limits and most people go at 75-80mph tops)
Don't get me wrong I'm not hating on England, I'm just amazed at how fast the driving is here 😅
Maybe the wrong place to ask…I’ve just interviewed for a job in London - I live in Thanet and they would require me to work in office 4 days a week.
I’m just curious of the expenses that people pay out per month to do this. I understand Thanet is a long way from the Kent commuter towns so price can differ. Relocating closer to London is an option also.
I would ideally like to be commuting by train but driving is an option too. I know you can buy season travel tickets, is this worth the discount it comes with? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks :)
