$113 increase??

Alright insurance gurus, quick question.

I insured a 2021 F150 hybrid and a 2022 Ford Explorer XLT with AAA for $229/month. I don't know the details of the coverage, I just give my agent the VINs and he gets them insured for me. Nice and quick.

As of August 2024, aforementioned vehicles were replaced with: a 2024 F150 hybrid, and a 2024 Ford Bronco Sport. No change in coverage.

My monthly bill is now $342/month. Can someone please provide possible explanations for the 50% increase? Is it helps at all, every vehicle mentioned was a lease.

Update coverages piecemeal or wait until I can do it all at once?

A recent car accident has me paying close attention to all of my insurance for the first time. I currently bundle my home and auto insurance with Geico (Homesite for homeowners). In Washington state.

AUTO: We got a new car, so I used the same terms as I used for our old car. I now want to…

  • Decrease our deductibles
  • Increase our coverages (thanks to this sub’s horror stories, and to qualify for umbrella insurance)
  • Probably remove emergency roadside

HOMEOWNERS: I want to deal with…

  • The fact that we have a furnace and A/C, not a heat pump
  • The fact that our roof is older than was reflected in our home inspection

UMBRELLA:

  • Get one!

We’ve been in our home for five years. The home was listed as having a heat pump. Our home inspector sucked. Missed that we didn’t have a heat pump, but a furnace and A/C; estimated that the roof was only 3 years old when I’ve had someone come out and look at the roof in the last couple years and they said it needs to be replaced within the next 4-6 years; and missed the previous owner’s DIY flashing on the roof which, within a month of moving in, I discovered had caused a leak into the ceiling/wall. Tried to make a claim on our homeowners insurance but they correctly denied coverage, as it was preexisting.

Anyway, I can’t quite remember how we got our homeowners insurance but my guess is that I got quotes relying upon the information contained in the inspection report and home listing, saying we had a heat pump and that the roof has been replaced in 2016. I now realize the relevance of all of this for underwriting purposes and I want to update with the correct information. I fully expect our rates to increase, which I’m more than fine with it. Much better than a denial on a claim in the future, or being dropped unexpectedly.

A few questions/concerns:

  • I can easily change my auto insurance coverage in the app. Should I change the coverage ASAP while I’m muddling through the rest of this? Is it ever held against you if you making a lot of changes to your coverage in close succession?
  • If I update that we don’t have a heat pump, is this the sort of thing you get a nonrenewal over?
  • Similar question about updating the condition of the roof - do we risk nonrenewal? How would I give an estimated date of the last replacement when I don’t actually know? I’m assuming it’s much older than our pre-inspection report says based on a separate roofing estimate, but don’t have an actual date.
  • Assuming we are able to update the company on the condition of the roof, is there a decent chance they’ll require us to replace the roof? How long do they typically give you to do so? We were planning to replace the roof the next summer or two anyway, but doing it now would be extremely difficult (I’m not sure how easily roofing companies can even replace roofs during the rainy season, and there was recently a massive wind storm so I’m assuming they’re swamped with work).
  • Would it be easier/more efficient to get quotes with the updated facts/coverages from other companies? The roof questions above still apply - seems even more likely that they’ll want to inspect the roof. And what date would I even supply for the last time the roof was replaced?

I’m in the process of getting quotes from some independent insurance agents, but am having a terrible time getting agents on the phone (which doesn’t bode well for using them if I have issues in the future). Hoping the internet hive mind can help give me some direction!

Normal price for car insurance?

I'm interested in buying a new car and I'm shocked at the quotes I'm seeing. I've always been on my parents' insurance (old car with just liability insurance) so I'm not really sure what's typical.

Some background info that might be relevant:

  • I'm a 26 year old man with no tickets or accidents

  • I've been licensed for 9 years

  • I have a graduate degree and make $200k+/yr

  • I live in an apartment in a nice neighborhood of a major city (think Dallas / Chicago / Los Angeles type cities)

  • I'm interested in leasing a 2025 Subaru Crosstrek.

I just put all this info into the Allstate site and got quoted about $650/mo for the most basic comprehensive insurance plan. Is that normal? It's double the cost of leasing the car.

Difference between contractor estimate and adjuster estimate

What should I do if the estimates provided by the adjuster is higher than what the contractor quited me? The insurance company told me that if the estimate from contractor is higher then I should be sending in additional documentation but if it’s the other way around do I need to return the difference amount? The insurance company did not give me a clear response

I really need car insurance rate advice please!!

I am 24 yr old female. I have had Progressive car insurance faithfully since i was 19. However i had two DUI in 2022. There were no accidents from them thankgod but before those accidents my insurance was around $250 (had some light fender benders when I was a teen) and it was raised only by $100, up until Febuary of this year. i was ok with paying the $350 but when i went to renew they increased me $90 when I have had 0 accidents or tickets. I can’t keep affording $450 a month just for car insurance with everything else. I’ve been shopping with experian and I was offered a $139 a month rate with Bristol West. It’s a completely finished draft of that policy. The agent on the phone told me they ran my entire driving record, know that my car is still financed, and told me the rate they offered was simply just that low because of my good history with Progressive(and I assume getting a little older). Can someone please give me some advice because this could truly change my life to save $300 a month. All of the reviews I’ve read on here about BW have been awful as far as customer service/cancelling policies, but I thought maybe if I shared my situation maybe I could get some insight about BW or another company with a similar savings. For reference I have also maintained a credit score at or above 720 for the last two years aswell. No accidents or tickets besides the DUIs in 2022, since probably 2018. Much appriciated !!!

Producer vs adjuster..what do I do?

I am looking for a way to supplement my FT income and have looked at getting a health producers license vs becoming a desk adjuster.

There are some nuances here. I cannot (nor do I want to) do field adjusting. I'm in Ohio so no licensure needed for adjusting..except I would have to get one to be able to work claims in other states so no real advantage there.

Ultimately, there will be a learning curve with either and I'm okay with that.

The real conundrum is with finding initial work and ongoing "on my own terms" work. I am willing to take a part time W2 position to learn...but do they exist? I can only work evenings and weekends. My ultimate goal is to move into a part time/flexible 1099 work down the line.

I've seen some info online that 1099 independent adjuster gigs are available, but not sure where and what the pay looks like. Also those are probably field positions. I need to work remotely. Health producer opportunuties seem like there are only 2 paths: full time W2 or full on 1099 and you buy your own leads with little to no support. I am not interested in building a team and I donr want to market for clients. I wanna log in, work, and get paid.

I would appreciate any wisdom anyone can share here, from either side! Also, if you have any hits on companies for either path that offer part time work (W2 or 1099) I would appreciate that so much. Thank you in advance!!

Car insurance seems…too cheap?

Hello 32 y/o male living in Dallas Fort Worth with a 2013 Infiniti sedan. No accidents and last ticket was 18 years old. Browsing through geico auto insurance and was quoted $240 for a 6 month policy. That’s around $40/ month. BI/PD is 100/300/50 Uninsured is 100/300 I understand it’s not the best, but the policy premium seems too cheap. Does this sound correct? I think for a 1 year policy with liberty with the same coverage was 900 for me last year.

Wreck in Seattle registered in Oregon

Hi I recently got in a wreck in seattle (it was the other guys fault according to the insurance company). My vehicle is registered in Oregon, but I just moved up to Seattle. Will this go on my Oregon DMV abstract as an accident and will I get to keep the wrecked car?

Settling car accident

I was rear ended almost 2 years ago. I have done several rounds of physical therapy, and am still doing it. I did do PT for pain in the same area prior to my accident, and imagine I will need to do it again in the future. My PT does not know if the current pain is related to the accident or not.

Can I settle with the other party’s insurance company yet? If I settle, will I need to pay my health insurance back for any additional PT I do for this issue in the future?

I ask because I will reach the two year statute of limitations in a few months and am not sure what would be best to do at this point.

Turning 25 soon, car insurance question

Hello! I’m aware that premiums go down once you hit age 25. I’m going to be 25 in two weeks, and have (i think) a good driving history—one accident deemed not my fault a couple years ago, and one speeding ticket (<15mph). I am wondering how much I can expect my premiums to go down, and if it’ll be done automatically or if i need to switch to a new company. I currently use progressive because it’s the cheapest by far in the city i live in, but i’m not a big fan of how they treat me, so I’m looking for an excuse to switch anyway.

Accident with uninsured driver - need advice

I am located in Oregon. Last week a driver ran a stop sign and hit my car on the right passenger side. We parked at a nearby 7-11 (where he works and who has CCTV video of the incident if needed) but he did not want to provide insurance information to me.

I feel really stupid for not pressing or potentially getting the police involved, but I was so shaken up that it was an afterthought. I have never been in anything more than a fender bender, and my car was technically “drivable” (or so I thought at the time). I was on my way to work so I left after we exchanged contact information.

He has been in contact with me and has been cooperative, but he is adamant that he wants to pay out of pocket. The front right tire area sustained most of the damage and after taking it to the tire shop I was told that it is unsafe to drive. They quoted me over $1k for that damage alone, at minimum. This doesn’t include any cosmetic damages or any other issues they might find.

I sent the quote to the other driver and he still insists he wants to pay out of pocket. He agreed to meet with me on Monday to give me the money for what I got quoted.

My question is should I ask him to foot the repair bill if he does in fact want to pay out of pocket, or should I just ask him to pay the deductible ($500) and let my insurance handle it?

I have no idea how any of this works and my insurance rate is very low, I don’t want it to go up even though I wasn’t at fault. But the mechanic at the tire shop said he’d guess that the full damage (including cosmetic) would probably be upwards of $3k. Not to mention I also do have some neck pain from the crash, and I assume that’s something that insurance would cover as well if I needed any treatment.

I’m sorry if this all sounds very stupid and naive, I just have no idea what to do and I’ve gotten varying degrees of advice.

I use Progressive for insurance.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

First time getting car insurance, what rates could I expect?

So I am 27, and am getting car insurance for the first time.

I got my license at 20, and I have never gotten into a car accident or have any points.

I am looking lease a 2024 Tesla Model 3 or Y, and was wondering where do I even go to work to try to get the best quotes?

Living in my own rental property

Hi!

My family is currently living in a rental property we own via an LLC. We moved in as we were recently displaced as our primary residence was destroyed due to a hurricane, and the rental just happened to be vacant. The rental was an STR/MTR. We will likely live in the “rental” for a few years.

Our current insurance policy on this house is a DP-3 short term rental.

I’m trying to figure out how to make everything clean on the insurance side. Should I sign a lease in my personal name, pay my LLC “rent”, then endorse my policy as DP-3 annual tenant?

I wasn’t sure if that is legit enough on the legal side in the event of a claim since I’m technically the owner of the home via the LLC.

Any thoughts or advice is appreciated, thanks!

New home build vs repairs after house fire

We had a large fire on the 2nd floor of our house this summer and it caused quite a bit of damage. At least two full bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and the connecting hallways all were burned significantly. Literally every other inch of the house was damaged by smoke or water otherwise. Most importantly, the basement (old farm house, field stone foundation) immediately filled with water once the power was turned off and the fire dept. began spraying water. Roughly 20,000 gallons ended up in the basement, and the restoration company we started with let that sit for over a month before pumping it out. It's been a few months since then and the basement is again filling with water since there is no power to run the sump. The company I just mentioned has been fired and we are now working with another restoration team, but that's very new and just getting the ball rolling.

Our insurance company/adjuster has been very responsive and helpful. so far. However I can tell they really want to finish the claim and close things up - but I'm not really on board with their repair estimate. The adjuster says we should certainly be able to fix the damage and keep the existing structure, but I'm not so sure, especially now with the water situation downstairs.

We've already finished our inventory list and gotten payment for all of that - so at least that's done and out of the way. We're covered for $380K on the dwelling itself and the insurance company's first estimate came in at $320K. The original restoration company stripped the entire house and completed the mitigation process, but never submitted an estimate and left us hanging from that point on. Needless to say, we *still* don't have an estimate from a restoration company yet. I guess my question boils down to whether or not we have to fix it as is or if we're able to rebuild on our own.

Any advice would be helpful!

multiple years w/same car ins. two not at fault collision claims in last 2 years - will they drop me?

i have a great full coverage policy for a fair price, same ins co for 6+ years. But 2023 and now 2024, i was not at fault both other drivers admitted fault, my car totalled both times.

the first accident my insurance paid my claims and then subrogated. for the first accident's loss payout acv settlement negotiation, b/c i knew they were subrogating, i pushed hard for higher settlement and got it.

this time, the driver who hit me is not a covered driver on the policy of the car he was driving. i got the usual lowball offer (for the loss vehicle but i worry about pushing back because i fear this will convince them to drop me at renewal time (in march). but if i don't push back and take their low underpayment as acv, i'll be so mad if they drop me anyway.

with the two accidents not at fault but within two years both total losses (car value around 12k-13k) will they not renew/drop me? what about if i run any of my med claims through the underinsured/uninsured portion? will they drop me for sure then. i know they cant raise your rates - they can just drop you. anyone can advise as to renewal non renewal decisions/interelations with claims? Thank you

Does an Accident Affect the Primary Driver's Record if I'm Listed as a Secondary Driver?

Hi, I live in Ohio and have Progressive insurance. I recently bought a new vehicle, where I’m listed as the owner and my mom is the co-owner on the car title. She doesn’t drive my car and has her own vehicle, which is also listed on the same insurance policy. I was involved in an at-fault accident, but the damage was only to my car. My mom is listed as the primary driver on the policy but exclusively drives her own car, it is also mentioned on the insurance who drives which vehicles. Will this accident impact her insurance rates, especially since she is planning to switch to a different insurance provider?

Insurance deposited money randomly

I received tonight $4800 for a claim that was from the beginning of this year. I was sent an email for the deposit and it shows they issued it to my claim on my account on USAA. Now it is exactly double of what they sent to me before, for the already estimated damages. On my USAA account under the reason for sending money is "Payment under Collision Coverage, deductible has been waived." the email states "A payment of $4,792.66 was issued to "MY NAME" for your auto claim." Should I call and find out if it was a mistake or leave it? (my claim was for an uninsured motorist hitting me as well as payment for missed work. I also no longer use USAA as of 6+ months, I have been using a completely new company.)

Rear ended by potentially uninsured driver

Got rear ended at a stop light. Bumper is a little scratched and paint is gone. The other driver didn’t speak English and couldn’t show me their insurance info. All they had was their ID from another country (not even a drivers license) and an incomplete car registration. So worse case, they were driving without a license, without insurance and without a car registered. Best case, they have insurance but and a DL but just didn’t understand what I was asking. Seems like they just moved here.

From what I gather, even if my bumper looks fine, I still need to have it looked at and potentially repair. I have a deductible of $1K.

My question is, should I still file a claim? I feel like I’m fucked because I wasn’t at fault but if the guy has no insurance, it will be a collision claim with $1K deductible, premium increase and carfax showing an accident when it reality it could be nothing. Am I correct about the situation?

If he does have insurance (which I don’t know) would his insurance cover all the cost?

Ideally I would like check if my bumper is actually damaged first then decide if I need to file a police report / file a claim?

Auto renewed after cancellation

Has anyone used National General for auto insurance?

I recently cancelled my policy with them, a month prior to the auto renewal date.

But for some reason they automatically renewed my policy for another term and charged me.

I’m going to call them about this. But is there something I missed? I thought cancelling my policy implies I do not want to renew it.

Door Dinged someone Oct 2023

I had an incident where I door dinged someone in MD while having NC insurance. It was a no dent small scratch. The person refused to let me pay out of pocket even after explaining that both our rates would go up**,** and insisted that he would go through insurance. Within the last 13 months I picked up a new MD insurance and they have raised my rates 20% from the last 6 months I have been with the company due to the above mentioned incident. I have a quote from a shop that the work was going to cost under 400 dollars for the work and have read some hearsay online that things this small (under 1000) should not effect, especially not drastically - your rates.

I am with the costco insurance of Connect and it was by far the best rate I could find but it seems like they finally got word from the previous group I was with about this and are throwing a heafty increase on it. I have not spoken with the agents yet but this feels a bit extreme of an increase for the work that was requested.

Can you lose medicaid in Virginia mid year if you get a job and income goes above certain levels?

Hi, I'm in Virginia and my family has had medicaid for the past 6 months. I will start a new job in a few weeks and they new job offers health coverage and my income will definitely be above medicaid requirements. Can they drop you from medicaid mid year or would we have it until the next renewal date?

Being sued 1 year after accident, no longer have the same insurance

Hello, for a little context, I was involved in an accident about 1 year ago in NJ but I no longer have the same insurance as a year ago. Do I need to go back with the same insurance to have their lawyers cover me? I’m not sure how this works. Any help would be appreciated.

Property damaged in apartment

We had a leak in our apartment (rental) and ruined around $4000 of stuff. Is this the kind of thing renters insurance covers?

Does the age of a car impact insurance rate changes in the incident of an accident?

i am a bit of a late bloomer in terms of driving. i didn't get my license until i was 23 in 2022, which is also when i got my first car, which was a 2018 (4 years old at the time) Elantra. as you might expect, as a new driver, i crashed it a couple times. i crashed it for the first time almost right after i got it, and i finally crashed it again recently, a couple months ago. (so, really not crazy, only twice in 2 years can’t be that bad, right?!)

this car is insured under my mother’s insurance, and obviously these accidents have increased our premium. but, she has started saying that instead of getting a shiny brand new (4 year old used) car, i should have gotten a SUPER old busted up beater for my first car to “practice on” and bang around, because it would have been less of an expense.

now, i am not following her logic on this. she is convinced that to insure a busted up old beater car would have been cheaper, and if i “banged it around” (i.e. got it in a couple of accidents) the increase to our insurance premium would be much more negligible, and it would be cheaper to fix.

i’m no insurance expert, but i don’t think this makes any sense. a car is a car. in my head, regardless of the age of the car, getting into an accident in it will incur the same or similar increase to one’s premium, due to the same proof that they are a risk, and a similar cost to get it fixed, if not greater, since older car parts might be harder to come by, no?

just wondering if my mom knows what she’s talking about here. is it cheaper to insure an older car, and would premiums increase less in the incident of an accident with an old beat up car rather than a newer one?

(please don’t beat me up, i know i’m a bad driver. no one was hurt in either accident!)

Continuation of Coverage During Pregnancy (BCBS FL)

Pregnant, due Feb 2025. I have marketplace insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. My OB solely delivers at Baptist Hospitals. On October, BCBS and Baptist redid their negotiations and my particular coverage, MyBlue, was one of the very few lines of coverage that didn’t get renewed.

I received a letter from BCBS saying since my pregnancy started while Baptist still took MyBlue, I’m eligible for “continuity of coverage” for my pregnancy/delivery through my due date and 60 days past.

My question is how much of a headache could this turn out to be? Should I trust BCBS to deal with the bills? Or should I try and find a new OB that delivers at a hospital that accepts MyBlue? Baptist is the closest hospital to me by almost 30 minutes when labor does start. My OB does take MyBlue so my visits are still covered, I just need to know about which hospital to go to.

Any help

Hi, My business had a water leak causing water damage to the building and wet insulation. The plan was for the fiberglass insulation on the ceiling be covered to prevent any of it going airborne prior to setting up drying fans for the drywall. Restoration company completely forgot to cover the insulation and caused fiberglass to go airborne ever where with the high powered fans. What do I do and someone needs to take responsibility for this negligence. We had discussed this prior to starting any work as building is fairly new and millions invested ground up two years ago. Has anyone gone through this and any suggestions. My own building insurance doesn't cover pollution/contaminants. But this has nothing to do with my insurance and should be on the restoration company. Thanks
