Has anybody on here done granite peak? Last night I had a notch of inspiration and am starting to prepare and plan to climb granite peak in august 2025 with 2 friends. I have done plenty of strenuous hiking, and used to do a lot of bouldering in a climbing gym (up to v7 but v5 fairly comfortably) and was curious honestly how bad is the climbing? Will my boulder experience be enough skill in climbing to get myself up? I plan to learn how to use ropes and harnesses so I can repel down and have the security on my way up . My other question is see this snow bridge would I need crampons or would some solid hiking boots/ shoes suffice? Should I bring an ice axe?
It's gonna be on September 18th to 20th. Here's the registration link: https://highpointers.org/events/convention-2025-california/
Who here plans to go? I know I do and have several peaks I plan to go to. In order (probably), Boundary, the tip of the Nevada Triangle, Grapevine (HP of the Nevada Triangle section of DVNP), Badwater Basin, Telescope Peak, and (hopefully) Whitney. Anyone interested in joining me for that?
Also, about Grapevine, there's no official trail to the top of it. Anyone got tips for that hike? Is there a GPS thing that can operate in areas w/ no cell service? If yes, what's a good brand for those?
Thank you all for all the help on my last post. I’m planning a trip out west in march to backpack for a couple days. Just mostly wondering on the typical snow level around march on and to Humphreys Peak. Any help is appreciated!
Me and a buddy are planning a trip here around mid to late march 2025. Just want to know what to expect when it comes to snow/weather or if it’s a bad idea all around. Thanks!
Video trip report from my summit of South Saddle Mountain in the Oregon Coast Range, the highest point in the county where I live!
This is my 6th PNW county high point since I moved west in 2021, and let me tell you, they are a lot more challenging out here. I used to live in PA and have to remind myself that lofty Mt. Davis is lower than the mountaintops 20 miles from my house.
Like many county high points, the stats on this one are a little under-researched. Online lists give the east peak as the summit at 3,465 ft., but the west peak is clearly higher and just wasn't surveyed as carefully. It's somewhere in the 3,440- 3,520-foot contour, and my GPS app thought it was a little over 3490 ft. high.
Anyone who has attempted Denali: How did you train? While I feel comfortable with glacier travel from Rainier and Hood, I feel wholly unprepared for the length of the expedition, extreme cold, and high altitude—even with a guide service. Any advice is appreciated!
With My Buddy Joe!
Well, as usual I'm way behind in editing my highpointing vids, but, hey, throwback to warmer weather!
Mount Sunflower makes for a quick highpoint and is probably the only one with a little free library on site.
Question for anyone who has been there lately. How large is the lot at Black Mountain? Is it big enough for me to maneuver my small trailer? Is the road to the lot paved? I see some people talking about a one lane road-is this the "trail" to the summit? We are staying at Kingdom Come SP and would rather bring the trailer with us than have to go back to get it. Thanks!
Does anyone here have much info about these 2? They're the highpoints of Gates of the Arctic and Kobuk Valley National Parks, respectively. I've Googled it, but because of how extremely remote it is, there's next to no info about the hikes.
Is Guadalupe crazy busy during Christmas? I camped and hiked it in January 2016 and had a lot of fun trudging through the snow. I was the first one up the trail but a Canadian passed me and we took pictures of each other a the summit. Took the family back through there for spring break in 2018 from Big Bend to Carlsbad but did not attempt the trail because wife was super pregnant with child #2. Now, child #2 is 6 and has 21 highpoints so we may try a trip.
Specifically, the NP HPs. I've been working on claiming those as well.
Doing a 4 day backpacking trip this November. Would be partial to something in the west , as I've done most of the major ones east of the Mississippi. Any recommendations?
Hey guys! I’m from Utah and am planning on doing the high points fromNew York to Maine down to PA in one trip next week any reports on conditions or people who have done it with snow?
Made it up to my 11th highpoint with my son on Saturday. Heavy snowfall the night before almost made this one a story for the recent thread on bailed trips, but once we reached the saddle the summit seemed doable. Time to start my planning for spring and summer 2025 trips!
I mostly just made this for fun to tell the story of my first year going at it. I made the map in OmniGraffle and then made frames of each point of progression on the map and animated those with a voiceover.
The observation tower was very crowded but the views were awesome
