I had extra time this week so I snuck in another painting. I originally had something else planned but changed direction and went with this one. This was a Nick Hankins one from the 32nd Joy of Painting series. When I first started painting BR paintings I always liked the bright one. And this one certainly would brighten up a dull room 😉
I looked through the sub and found the suggestion of a season 5 episode called Ocean Sunrise, but my co-host was disappointed that it had a guest painter.
It was requested that we don't do mountains. One of our party guests seems to think Mountains are hardest (idk).
Please and thank you. 💖
"Benign" oil on panel, 2025
As I get older my Color-blindness is gradually getting worse preventing me from properly mixing colors. I’ve been a little discouraged, so I painted this one in monochrome.
Hi everyone, I accidentally bought canvas boards thinking they were regular stretched canvases. I've used boards in the past when i first started out with the wet-on-wet but they dried out before I could finish the sky
I've seen ppl say that a layer of gesso prevents it from happening but I've never needed to try it cus I always go for stretched canvas, so I'd like to know if it actually works thanks.
On my third painting, I was using the two inch brush, applying color by pushing the tip to the canvas and letting the bristles bend just a bit, as Bob does. But I was getting a lot of stray color pretty far off to the outward-curved side.
I figured out that it's from short bristles. I don't recall having this trouble for my first two paintings, so my suspicion is that I've broken off those bristles somehow, possibly by assaulting the devil too aggressively.
Another thing that in hindsight might have been a poor choice is where I beat the brush. I have a Harbor Freight bucket that I drilled a couple of holes in, and ran a half inch wooden dowel through, and I beat the brush against that. I'm thinking the wood may have been catching bristles. I will replace it with a length of metal electrical conduit for my next painting.
Or maybe the short bristles are normal and my technique is wrong? I'll be grateful for any insights!
Edit: I should have mentioned that the brush is from the Bob Ross master set. And when I get home I'll check the bucket for broken-off bristles.
Maybe I can salvage the brush by finding and snipping off all the short bristles. I'll definitely want to figure out what's causing them first, though!

It’s been a long while since I’ve painted much (I did paint a few Halloween paintings). I wanted to do another Bob painting so I decided to do this one. This is very straightforward and with the limited palette it makes brush washing easy 😃
