I’ve been playing GeoGuessr on my iPad for a little over a year now, just doing my 5 free endless games a day. It’s the only mode I actually enjoy. I logged in this morning after a couple of days of inactivity and can no longer find it - the UI is completely different and it isn’t an option under the single player tab. Am I going crazy or did they get rid of it?
Hi. It’s a long time since I’ve posted here but this is where I discovered the community many years ago. I’ve made a documentary about the history of Geoguessr with interviews from some of the game’s most prominent figures. Hope you enjoy, it was made out of love for the community ❤️
does anyone have a rescource of matching road lines to countries/places in the world? ive learned a lot of other things such as road side and languages and plates and follower cars and it seems like road lines are a big part of the game and was wondering if anyone had a helpful thingy for it.
I just wanted to share this no moving duel i played yesterday (gold I). 300 points remaining against a french player.
Last Location looks french, some mountains. I go for a guess - 2km away.
I blowed my own mind :)

Hey y'all, i was just in a moving duel with someone who acted pretty weird when i watched his replay. Can you guys have a look at Round 4 of this duel, he just stood still for a couple times, zoomed in on a different city with the same name, decided it didn't match, only to then immedietly find the other city with that name on the other side of the world. (to be fair i do not think it's weird he found out it was the phillipines since he stood in front of that sign, but how he immedietly zero'd in on this small port harbour city, was a bit suspicious to me)

The strangest thing… when I play on the iPhone app, I win like 80% of the time, even against higher rated players, including a couple 900+ and 1000+. I got all the way to an 850 duel rating.
Then, I played on the computer and I lost 80% of the time, dropping my score all the way back down to 550.
Then I noticed that in the app, a lot of my opponents had similar names like BreezyMountain45 and MountainFresh26. Are these bots? Or just inexperienced players? Are app players separate from browser players? Because on the browser they all had unique names like real players would use.
Thanks

Pictured: the location in Wales, UK that inspired this map but is itself not in this map.
A map with 5 locations all around the world that reminded me of the famous "Wales, UK" meme location.

im quite new and I know im not the best player ever, but there's something pissing me off so much lately. Every time I go into a duel it's with a blessed European (mainly Sweden, Germany, Austria...) and, give it a guess? 80% os the maps are in the fucking Europe.
I'm just feeling betrayed. Maps are only Austria, Finland, Sweden, sometimes Taiwan. 2 times in a row argentina (which is okay since im Brazilian) but there's nothing else and it's always a fricken European with me.
That's it just wanted to dump my anger :(
Last week I started at a crossroads on a random Bulgarian road.
This week, I started a match in the exact same spot, what are the odds for that? Must be astronomical?
Any info on how many positions there are to start on?
For reference, playing moving ranked at Gold2 atm.
Hello, I just came back from a couple of months not playing the game, and I am confused.
When I try to play in the competetive matchmaking section I only meet low rating people (~600), while I have regained my points and am back to 1000+, and I never rank up from gold, I thought master is 850+?
What is the point of this competetive gamemode if I dont meet opponents on my level? Its not fun when I can win almost all my games because people cant even identify the continent, on the other hand I cant imagine how helpless the people I play against must feel. Especially when I met some of them three times in a row.
Hey, Im new on GeoGuessr and on 500-700 Elo (sometimes my elo just gets down even though im not playing lmao) and if I want to play, It’s loading till eternity. I restart the game like 4 5 6 7 times and than it’s working…… for 2-3 games. Any Advice is welcome!
Hey, I just returned after a 3 month hiatus and I am still not sure if I understand the new system correctly. I can play for this season points to gain or lose divisions - got it. But what about my ELO? Wouldn't that mean If I do well I get up but may get matched with more difficult opponents? So I need to play less to meet people with my ELO? Or is matchmaking completely dependend on ELO and the divisions are pure cosmetic? I really don't care for badges, I can be trash 3 if needs be, but I care a lot to not meet people 200+ ELO higher than me and I used to go on long benders with 8+hours a day and then nothing for some weeks. Am I fucked? Thank you for helping!
PS: I am not hating nor do I want to incite a discussion about if the system is goor or not, I am just really confused right now.
Edit: Same question posted by another user at the same moment: https://www.reddit.com/r/geoguessr/comments/1bzz698/i_was_wondering_whats_the_utility_of_rating/
I’ve learned a lot about the world after playing Geoguessr, and now I am curious about certain “niche” things that do not have readily available answers.
For example, have you ever wondered why they use brick houses in the north of Germany vs white/pastel houses in the south? My friend from Germany told me it’s because the north tends to have more rain which would stain white walls. Google says it’s because the region around there does not have many rock resources to create the stone walls typical in other parts of Europe.
Now for my questions…
Why were holey poles invented? Is it to save materials compared to solid concrete poles?
Why is Hokkaido architecture more European influenced? I heard somewhere it has something to do with the Meiji restoration era but I could not find anything on the internet about this.
Why does coastal architecture look different from inland architecture? E.g. Ireland coastal houses are more colourful “so sailors can see them fron a distance “ But in other countries such as croatia, coastal architecture differs from inland architecture in a different way. Maybe the coast is subject to more cultural influences due to trade and also has different geographical features such as climate and rock material, but some concrete answers would be nice.
Why is only North Sulawesi mostly christian and not other regions of Sulawesi. Same question with other regions of Indonesia.
Why do different regions of Philippines use different tuk tuks? Do different companies have monopolies on different islands or something? Also what’s the reason for the uneven roofs on the north/east tuk tuks, seems weird to me
I have other questions that I can’t think of right now. Anyone have answers or questions of their own?
is that hidden ELO like in other games? cause I play against people that have 300 more points than me, does it have a real usage or is it usless?
because when I finish my weekly 20 games, it says I could continue playing to improve my rating

Hi, ive been grinding alot of denmark over the last year or so and hold the current wr of 1:04. I was wondering if there is a tool to extract all of your 25ks so that i can do some data analysis stuff with it. I mainly want to gather my rounds time and plot them so that i can produce some accurate things in terms of how fast a 5k usually is
After playing in many party duels with multis and without multis, I now think multis just simply suck.
The one thing that multis is supposed to solve is games dragging on for too long. However, I see flaws in this argument.
Games will not even typically reach a too high number of rounds unless (usually) the players are very good and consistent which is not true for most people. Someone will usually blunder, especially in NMPZ.
Games still drag on if both players take a long time before guessing, regardless of multis. Adding a round time limit without multis might actually speed up the game moreso than having a game with no round time limit with multis.
Do people even care about games taking a long time? FFS we are here to play, and for example each League of Legends game is like 40 min. I don’t even think it’s possible for a NM or NMPZ duel to get even close to taking that much time unless both people are taking forever to guess, which brings me back to round time limits.
The only time I think multis are truly necessary are when both players are really strong and consistent, especially in moving format. Or in team duels, but those are unranked and customizable so it doesn’t matter.
Imo adding a round time limit is generally better at solving the issues that multis are trying to solve. Or even have a limit on the total number of rounds, like the WC.
With multis it just feels totally random and unfair that later rounds are worth that much more, you could lose by being slightly outhedged in Estonia meanwhile you can survive going wrong continent in round 1. I used to think multis were exciting but now I just think they take some of the skill out of the game. Multis are definitely more exciting to watch than to play (maybe that’s why it’s in the WC idk)
I just had a 17 round duel that reached 7.5k multis. I lost on the last round because my opponent got really lucky with a truck having the town name on the side of it and the truck was actually in that town. Craziest duel of my life considering the near 300 elo difference.
