I’m an Essendon supporter lurking on this sub to track Stringer’s progress.
I’ll give you my 2 cents.
Stringer is a very talented player. One of the most talented players to come through the afl system in the past 2 decades. But he has never reached the peak of his powers. His extreme talent is paired with an arrogance and laziness that is beyond any other player in the system currently.
He will win you games. No question about it.
And I honestly think he’ll be a better player at GWS than he has been at Essendon because of the quality of your forward structure and forward delivery. It’s leagues above ours. Stringer won’t be the main forward. He’ll be secondary to Hogan. He does his best work when he’s crumbing the ball.
You guys are gonna love it when he gets the ball. He’s a 195cm bloke who might be in the best 1 on 1 contestants in the comp. He can’t be tackled and he can just run through people like a train. He is pure X-Factor when he has the ball.
You’ll watch him kick from 50m on the boundary. You’ll watch him kick from 55m out on the run and send it through the middle.
But there are other things you’ll see.
He’s gonna burn blokes. He did it at Bulldogs, he did it at Essendon.
You’re gonna see him miss from 10m in front of goals. He cannot for the life of him kick it through the big sticks when he is straight in front. He has to be on an angle or 50m out.
You’re most likely going to see him get fat. It’s funny for like all of 1 game and then it’s really not.
Enjoy him while he’s around and playing good footy. I genuinely think GWS has a good chance at getting the most out of Stringer in the twilight of his career. You guys are my favourite to win a premiership in 2025 and I think it is about time.
I was honestly a bit sad to see him go. He has been an entertaining player to watch. Sometimes he was frustrating to no end, but a lot of the time he was also the best thing on the field.
Glad that Essendon is finally taking a stand and looking to be more professional, but happy that a good club like GWS was happy to pick Stringer up and give him a chance to prove himself and end his career on a good note.
Looking forward to watching how this season plays out.
Love to hear your thoughts on how many goals Stringer could kick this year in a new set up. Plenty of scoring options at the Giants. Will be interesting.
Cadman Hogan Stringer Daniels Greene Jones
Callaghan Briggs Green Kelly Cogs Bedford
Buckley Taylor Idun Himmelberg Ash Whitfield
Gothard
Bench is debatable on all fronts I think
Forward: I'd probably go small here with Stringer playing the taller Riccardi role so it's Gothard (looked dangerous at the end of last year) Thomas (so consistent in his first year and plays the connecting role perfectly) McMullen (tackle pressure and solid)
Mid size Defender: Filling in for Perryman we have Stone (if not now...when? Looked handy in the VFL last year once switch back. Is he defensive minded enough? Leake (been training as a mid but they love his versatility and size so a good option) The Font (great attacking speed but with Ash and Whitfield both running off I feel like we need a more defensive minded player here.) Wehr (more defensive and not flashy but might be the go)
Mid/wing x 2 Ward (hard to not put him in the team) Angwin (haven't really seen him play at the level we have been hoping for but maybe it just takes time) Rowston (I'm excited for him as that Cogs replacement inside. Tough as nails) Xavier (think he was solid last year, disposal still gives me grief though)
I'm going with Gothard Stone Ward O'Halloran Sub(McMullin NOPE SUSPENDED) + ANGWIN
For round 1.
Very much hoping we see Leake and Rowston and maybe even a couple of the new draftees make moves.
I received an email this morning stating that my Giants membership has been renewed for an additional 12 months ($310) however there was no prior reminder sent either by GWS or Ticketmaster to notify me about this. Also, when I went to both the GWS member homepage and my Ticket Master profile, I haven't saved any of my card details, so I was really curious as to how did they renew my subscription without any saved billing details.
When I looked into the FAQs under the members section in their website it showed this info:
As I had purchased the membership online in late 2023 they put me on an auto renewal ("easy pay") plan by default, but when I looked into the email they had sent when I made this purchase, they don't specify anywhere about the auto-renewal bit. Also to opt out of the auto-renewal you have to call their office or email them (rather than just doing it online) and when I called their office they are currently on leave and won't be open till mid-January. So to summarise, GWS and Ticketmaster:
If this isn't unethical (if not illegal) business practice, I don't know what is. I intend to retain my subscription, however I would be very interested to know if they would refund the charge for members who were charged unknowingly and now don't want to retain a membership. Also, is this a case worth highlighting to the NSW Fair Trading?
Hey everyone, did anyone happen to have any spare tickets for the St Kilda v GWS game at Norwood oval on Sunday April 13 that they’d be willing to sell me?
Hey guys this is the first year I’ve elected to have a store voucher instead of getting the member pack. Just wondering if anyone knows when you get the voucher, like is it when the season starts or is it sooner? Cheers!
Phil Davis has passed the torch on to Harvey Thomas, who will wear the number 1 jumper next season. This is a huge accolade for the young gun and hopefully invigorates the younger players!
Pick 18: Ollie Hannaford Pick 19: Harrison Oliver Pick 24: Cody Angove
Going into this draft I expected Caruso to get up to his tricks, and I was not surprised at all with our first two picks despite what was on the board. Both Hannaford and Oliver are great picks in my opinion and I'm sure many are very happy that they ended up with us. Our third pick however...
Cody Angove is definitely a player who fits our game style but surely we could've taken him with our third pick (was 34) and traded this pick for North's (!!) future first. I can't wrap my head around Angove being supposedly worth more than a first round pick, nor can I think of any team who may take him before our next pick. Either Caruso and the list management team have gone crazy or they're secretly geniuses who have everything planned out. Very much a Caruso pick
Supposedly we'll be looking to trade our next pick away as well, only planning on getting Logan Smith tomorrow night.
Edit: On second thoughts regarding the north trade, it's very likely they offered their F1 for our pick + a F1 (or equivalent) back which would make a lot more sense for us to deny.
I havn't had the opportunity to be fully across the aflw this season like in previous years so i might be missing something incredibly obvious, but we seem to be very poor...again.
This season we are 1- 7 (plus 1 draw) with a percentage of 70.9
Last year we finished 2-8 with a percentage of 50.8
We started this season really well with a 72 to 9 win, we have had a few close losses but our last three losses have been by 34 points, 64 points and yesterday 37 points.
Just wondering if anyone whos been across it this season could let me know what the situation is with the team, is it an injury issue or are we just comparatively that poor.
Penalising someone for a twin towers joke seems like a pretty big overstep by the AFL and something that will confuse the issue of where the line is drawn rather than clearing it up. Upholding moral and ethical standards doesn't mean stepping in every time someone engages in dark humour on a mad monday.
With culture problems and Toby not playing at his best whilst being captain, maybe it’s time for a change?
Tom carries himself really well, is a great speaker, he’s from Canberra and always flys the flag. Or maybe (seeing as the role of captaincy seems to diminish on field performances at our club) it should be a less critical player or a veteran like Cal? I’m not saying this would fix everything but it feels like it could be a step in the right direction.
Soz for the quality of my photoshop
I know footy isn't everything but it can certainly be a big part of our lives.
Just wanted to make sure the Orange Army of Reddit is all good after a strange few weeks.
We got this!
What are everyone’s thoughts? I don’t know if I have it in me to cheer on Jake Stringer…
When do you think we will actually win a flag, every year we place top 8 I genuinely think we can win this thing. But every year some bullshit happens. After what happened this year I honestly don’t think it will be within the next 3 years
I never heard if we have any academy kids coming through this year. Anyone know?
