My partner and I are moving from Christchurch to South/east Melbourne and looking for a new gym, ideally in the east. One of our biggest regrets in deciding to leave is having to quit our current gym, IHF https://ihfhealthclub.co.nz/ which is a beautiful gym with finnish sauna, 6c cold plunge, lots of classes, free snacks/drinks etc. Saint Elite, while being crazy expensive and sold out, is also a bit more than we are really after. Just hoping someone can recommend something more suitable, similar to what we're used to. TIA ๐
Hi Everyone,
By way of introduction - I'm a fourth-year Honours/ psychology student in Melbourne (Cairnmillar Institute). As part of my university degree, we are currently conducting a study to investigate how oneโs self-perception relates to psychological symptoms including Eating Disorder symptoms, emotion regulation, Obsessive Compulsive symptoms, body dysmorphia symptoms, and depression.
To be eligible, you must be aged 18 years or older and fluent in English. You do NOT need to have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or an Eating Disorder to participate.
If you are eligible and wish to complete our approximately 20-minute survey, please click the link below, or let me know if you would like more information

My budget is $1800, looking for an elliptical/ Cross trainer machine with Bluetooth and tablet holder. Any good brands or model recommendations please?
Coming down to Melbourne for the weekend and need to do a 25km run as part of my training. Staying in Southbank and frome what i can see there seems to be some good tracks.
Does anyone have a recommendation or know of a group i can tag along with?
Hey all!
I'm looking at getting back into swimming for fitness and I need some recommendations. The last couple of fitness centres I've been to have set their pool temperature way too high (who the hell wants to swim laps in 30ยฐ water?) so I was wondering if anyone could suggest somewhere with a more workout friendly pool temperature.
I live in Preston and my boyfriend is in Footscray, so somewhere in the North or West would work.
TIA
Hi all. Hoping you could complete my survey. I would love responses from women into fitness.
Everyone goes into the draw for a $20 Lorna Jane or Cotton On Body gift card.

What were you hoping to get out of it, what should this sub be about? What would make you visit here more often?
Looking for some recommendations for gyms at the moment. Been thinking of going with city baths as it seems to be not overly expensive, has some classes, and a pool
Main aims I want to get out are a stronger core (hence the pilates), and to learn how to box. I am happy to join two different gyms if that's necessary, the city baths boxing class doesn't seem like it's going to be much chop
Any advice would be appreciated, cheers!
I am considering going to the gym near by work at lunch time, so I am wondering if anyone is currently doing or has done something like this?
Currently I do my workouts about 3 times a week near home after work. It is a 24 hours gym but realistically I am not going to workout at mid night, so I always find that it is always a bit crowded at 6-7pm hours, the time where most people has finished work and doing their workout.
Would workout at lunch hours be a bit more easier with less people?
If you are or has workout at lunch hours, and you have a daytime job, how do you manage your work hours? Would you have a big lunch straight after say heavy lifting for 30 minutes?
I planned to get a home gym if I stuck with a regular gym for a year and it's finally time! Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good place to buy equipment. I've checked out gumtree but would prefer new stuff if possible. Looking for a power rack with cable, dip and pull up attachments, bench, Olympic bar and plates and dumbbell set (adjustable) so if you know any good brands or places to buy that would be great. Thanks in advance for any help.
If your looking for an activity to do throughout they year, then kayaking is ideal. This activity is exciting, healthy and will keep you happy all year round. Ranging from fishing to whitewater, Port Phillip Bay to Lake Eildon. Melbourne has great lakes and rivers for all types of paddling.
There are clubs you can join as well as plenty of stores that can provide you with everything you need, but one in particular has the largest range of kayaks in Australia, Capacity Sports. Capacity Sports is based Sandringham is currently dropping prices on a range of kayaks. So if your interested, a basic kayak starts from $295, but specialised kayaks are being dropped to under $1000 including rudders. Whether your a beginner or an experienced paddler, the staff at Capacity Sports will help you in anyway they can. They have 600+ kayaks so they have something for everyone.
I wont lie to you, I do work at Capacity but I'm posting this due to that kayaking is a hobby of mine. Once your out on the water, its just fantastic. Watching the sun rise or set when your out for a paddle is phenomenal. So if you have any questions or are looking for more information then please shoot me a message. Ill even work out a good deal or anyone who does end up purchasing a kayak.
Happy Paddling

Hi Melbourne!
Looking for a new sport to be a part of? Looking for an oportunity to make some new friends or get fit? Just want to try something new?
On saturday 25th june at 11am in docklands you have a chance to see if dragonboating is something you want to do.
Dragonboating is a water sport where a group of 20 paddlers work together to power a boat in competitive and social settings. Regular competitive races are held over the summer months and we train during winter to build strength and teamwork skills.
I am part of the melbourne flames, one of victorias and Austrailia's premier dragon boating clubs. We are holding a big come and try session next saturday, 25th june at 11am to give people the oportunity to try the sport and join our club during our expansion.
We would love to have you come along, all welcome regardless of fitness level or experience. Please check out and share our facebook event if you or your friends would be interested.
Happy cold Sunday all,
I'm lactose intolerant and have an autoimmune disease so whey is not recommended for me(even though there are conflicting studies...) so what other protein supplements are you guys into? I need something to up my protein intake that I get from food.
When I was taking whey, I could only tolerate the isolate version.
Do you use any apps/online platforms for your clients? i.e apps that do a good job of online tracking of workouts that they do and have all their client info etc.
I've checked out a few such as Trainerize and similar ones, but I've never really liked the feel and they all seem too overly complicated for what I need them for.
Currently I'm just using spreadsheets to keep track of everything, and my clients can log their own stuff in their own diaries.
Any online platforms that you've had success with?
Have been using the Men's Health Personal Trainer app for the past year or so, and looking a different app to shake up my lifting routines.
Which ones work for you guys?
Asking in this sub, because I want ones that are available in Oz.
https://www.reddit.com/r/melbourne/comments/4kz6jm/plus_fitness_gym_on_flinders_st_any_good/
I'm looking for a new gym to join and Plus Fitness on Flinders St seems to be an okay price($16 per week for a no-frills 24hr gym) and is in an okay location for me work-wise. Have you or anyone you know been a member there? What's it like?
I'm googling of course, but looking for recommendations for good quality shoes to purchase not online. Perhaps even get properly fitted. I'll need a cross trainer shoe I suppose.
Hi fitmelbournians, just wondering if any of you can recommend a personal trainer to me. I previously worked really well with a personal trainer for quite a long time but then I had the opportunity to move overseas a while back, got distracted by lots of other things and got fat again.
Now that I'm back in Australia for good, I tried to make a go of things myself by cycling, walking, jogging and lifting by myself and attending group classes and exercise meetups, but I just don't have the motivation to work as hard. I know that it's cheaper to just exercise on my own, but I want that extra bit of babysitting, as uncool as that is to admit!
I think back to the time when I worked with a good PT, and I'm willing to make the same investment. My budget would be about $60 to $75 per 40 minute session, and I'm willing to join a gym and pay additional membership fees if that's where the PT is based at instead of having their own independent mobile personal training business.
About me: right now I'm unfit and kinda whiny, so I need to work with a PT who is quite patient and sensitive. I can be moody, but that said, whenever I work with a PT, I'm a stickler for turning up on time for every session and giving everything a go despite the whinging in between sets, e.g. push hard during the set whether lifting/lunging/sprinting/burpee-ing, during 20 second break: "blah blah whinge a little about my fat ass/stress at work/random people I met/current world news/etc.", as soon as 20 seconds is up, jump back into pushing hard during the next set, rinse and repeat.
I tried a gym near my previous workplace and got assigned to a dudebro PT who was a bit gung-ho and tried the insult tactics, and it just didn't work out(screaming bootcamp sergeant styles might be effective for some but not for me). I'm a female that works best and connects with a female PT. Sadly, I can't find the previous PT I used to work with anymore - she has moved overseas herself :( I worked very well with her and if I had stayed in Australia back then, I would no doubt still be renewing our contract again and again. If I could find someone of her calibre, I am now planning to stay in Melbourne for good, and maintain PT expenses as a permanent part of my budget.
Anyway, would love it if you could refer someone! :)
I am thinking about going tomorrow. There are a few people I know competing in comps and I might head down for the day. Are the exhibits any good? Or is it just people trying to push their crap?
Hi Guys, I'm totally jazzed for 2 sessions and an active rest day this weekend. Have a blast, throw some weight around, go for a walk/run/sprint, bit a ball, knock down a wall just get out there!
Hi guys, so my gym is holding another try Crossfit for free event on the 21st of may at 8am, I can bring one lucky person with me. If your interested let me know. They're based in Brunswick.
Hi all,
I've recently moved to Melbourne and am interested if anyone has any recommendations on yoga studios/classes/teachers are worth checking out? Not too fussed on the 'variety'. I've had a google and there are HEAPS, so just trying to weed through some of them.
I've used yoga to supplement my exercise regime for quite a few years and have found it really beneficial - physically and mentally.
Living east side (richmond) but happy to travel.
Thanks in advance :)
Has anyone purchased one of these? If so can you recommend it? I've lost my Fitbit, need to buy another one but I hate the plastic bands. They remind me of being a teenager wearing a Swatch Watch.
