Welcome

Welcome to /r/ficiverse, the premiere destination for the writers of Reddit! Whether you're working on character development, style, substance or just looking for some friendly, constructive criticism of your writing, Ficiverse is the sub for you. Ficiverse is based around co-dependent writing development, which means, essentially working with a partner to create the best possible characters, stories, and universes!

Overview

So, now you’re asking, “Most handsomest Ficiverse Mods, how do I use this amazing partner based service?” Well, I’ll tell you, kiddo!

First, you make what’s called an “Author” or “Character” post. This is a text-post, in which you extend an offer or request to a potential partner - the difference between the two being that one is written as an offer or request from a fictional character, and the other is from one author to another.

Examples of “Character” posts :

“[Char] I am a 23 year old physicist, looking for someone smart with whom to discuss the meaning of life.”

“[Char] I am a 10-year heroin addict, who just needs a friend.”

“[Char] I am the elf-queen Gamora, seeking a new suitor.”

“[Char] I am a hard-wired living bomb that is going to explode unless somebody teaches me to love.”

Examples of “Author” posts:

“[Auth] Stuck with writer’s block, need advice.”

“[Auth] Can somebody help me write a romance scene?”

“[Auth] Need editor to read chapter, and give notes.”

“[Auth] Somebody help me quit drinking.”

Feel free to experiment with the post types and see what sort of crazy stuff you can make. For example, if you’re having trouble writing a scene for a certain character, you could enter a conversation with another writer, and hand over control of said character to them, to get a new idea of how they could possibly speak. Or, simply exchange ideas and worldbuilding notes with another author, and see if you can’t generate some new ideas - or maybe just kick up your feet and chat in-character, on your own terms.

EVERYTHING’S POSSIBLE WITH THE MAGIC OF FRIENDSHIP!!

Guidelines

Basic guidelines of Ficiverse

  1. This is not the place to roleplay, show off or arrange black market drug exchanges using cool code-words like “Eagle” and “Iceman”. The key term here is “codependent development”. It’s a nice fancy term for working with a partner to help develop characters, worlds and situations.

  2. Don’t steal each other's ideas, you dick.

  3. In lieu of rule 2, make sure to respect one another. You’re both here because you want to be better writers, and that bond alone should be enough to ensure a smooth degree of cooperation. If you’re looking for a fight, take it over to /r/fictionbrawl

  4. Don’t focus on yourself. It should be imperative that the amount of attention received in a cooperative project should be split fairly. Nobody likes that guy who just wants to brag on for hours about his magic system...

  5. Have fun. Or don’t. We won’t make you.

[Auth] When is it time to rework your setting and story?

This has been something I've been struggling with a lot as I've been working on my projects and where to go with them. Especially regarding the Dragoons' stuff.

For some reason, a lot of other ideas, even other settings/worlds in the Dragoons' universe, come together relatively easily and click into place pretty decently. But even though I've spent a decade plus refining the Dragoons' stuff and have a decent groundwork, it's just never been clicking with me proper for some reason and I'm not sure why Something about the general setting just feels.... Off and limited compared to my other stuff for some reason. I'm not sure if this is my anxiety and OCD speaking or an actual flaw in the foundation of my stuff that requires overhauls.

So how do you decide when it's the right time to rework what you have and if it's a good idea to do so? Also if you do decide to rework it, where do you start and how to you keep from "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" so to speak as well?

Thanks.

[Auth] So, how’s everyone’s projects going?

Figured I’d ask since there hasn’t been much activity lately. How are y’all doing?

Clandon Clayheim, the Warrior Otter

The only surviving one of 9 other children killed during the Sazzereht, he was overly protected by his mother and father and against his son's wishes, prevented him from joining the military force to avenge his fallen siblings. During the Night of the Tangerine Moon he was chosen as prey by the harvest deity Abari and was able to survive and win, something that never happened before, this act got him into the military and gave him the training to defend himself and others.

[Auth] Is there a Ficiverse sub for general feedback on ideas?

This has been something I've been thinking about recently: Is there a sub among the Ficiverse family for posting ideas for your world/stories/characters to gain feedback on from the community? Like posting some different ideas for a character's design to ask for feedback on which one looks the best or getting feedback for a story you're having trouble with etc and so forth.

Do we have that yet? Or does this sub have that purpose already?

[Char] Taavi Hakala, Private Eye

New York City, 1947. Taavi Hakala sat in his office, smoking a cigarette, feet propped up on his desk.

Taavi was a small man, short and slender, with long, wavy brown hair tied back in a low ponytail. He appeared to be of East Asian descent; half Asian, perhaps. He had pitch-black eyes and faint freckles, and what looked like a burn scar covered the left side of his neck and crept about halfway up his face.

He needed a case. Not just because he needed money, although he certainly did, but also because he was just plain bored.

[Char] The ghost of Rhys Llewellyn lurks within the ruins of London's Briarwood Asylum.

For whatever reason, you have found yourself inside the burnt-out husk of an old asylum on the outskirts of London. Back in the 1800s, it was a respected facility; few knew of the true horrors that went on inside its walls.

In 1886, however, the asylum burned down with everyone inside. The cause of the fire was never discovered, and it was ruled an accident. The ruins remain, however.

As you journey further into the asylum, you start to see him. The specter of a boy in a dirty, bloodstained hospital gown, with long, tangled hair, and holes where his eyes should be.

[Char] Dr. Ivan Kosti sits in his chamber, pouring over the mysteries of life and death

The room you enter is a dark, smoky reading room. Bookshelves line all of the walls, and the chandeliers are lit by almost burnt-out incandescent bulbs. In the dim light, pouring over a book that seems to be in an ancient language, is a handsome if gaunt man, hair starting to grey. drinking wine from a goblet. Placing a marker in the book, he looks up towards you. "I didn't expect any guests at this time." He says simply, his accent that of somewhere from England. "What do you require?"

[Char] "Hey, names Zafina and... I need your help."

The room you find yourself in is incredibly dark, only being lit by the holographic lights outside. The slow jazz music being drowned out by the heavy rainfall outside. The woman in question stands looking outside the window. Her expression was one of calm fatigue. She slowly roles the cigarillo between her lips, catching your form in the reflection of the window. She gives a relieved puff of her cigar. She turns towards you. "Thanks for coming so late. I could really use the help right now."
