What tuner works best for extended range?

Equally interested in hardware or plugins. I’ve always found the lower tunings throw most tuners off, what have you found that works?

Playing into a computer

I live in a townhouse in a large city so I can’t really use a traditional amp setup since I can’t be too loud. I plan on just playing directly into my Mac using mixwave or neural dsp, does anyone have any recommendations on an interface or something similar that has little to no latency for this sort of setup?

Caparison Angelus 7 string and drop tuning

So Ive found a pretty good deal on older used caparison 7 string but Im looking for some opinions. This will be my first go at extended range guitars and my primary goal/focus for the guitar is on the heavier side drop A, drop L and G. The Angelus is a fairly short scale at 24 3/4". Is this to short for what I want to do with it. Guitar is beautiful and priced right but if it's not gonna do what I want may be best to avoid.

What say you reddit?

Strandberg for drop G

I've heard mixed things about scale lengths, and Strandberg 7 sting necks are 26.25 on the low side, is this really any better than 25.5 inch scale length?

Custom shop 8 strings cheaper than a kiesel?

I’m looking to get an 8 string guitar with a builder similar to kiesel guitars, I just can justify spending that much on a guitar that will only get 10-12 hours of playing time a week

Help me choose my first 8 string! I am stuck between the Schecter C-8 SLS Evil Twin or the Schecter C-8 Rob Scallon

I like the roman numeral frets on the evil twin, have never tried an active pickup guitar, although I have an active bass which I like.

I like the black-brown-black design of the Rob Scallon and also the passive pickups are easier. It’s a shame it doesn’t have cool inlays like the Evil Twin.

I am stuck between these 2 models mostly because they are both around my budget, i don’t like the ibanez design for fanned frets (they still put the neutral at 12th), and I just generally dislike jackson guitars. Standbergs are cool but I don’t think I want a headless and they are a bit above my budget.

If you recommend something entirely different, keep in mind I live in Canada and my budget is max $2500CAD.

Hard case or premium gigbag?

Basically title. I own an 8 string and am currently deciding between a hard case and a well made gigbag. Wanted to ask in this specific sub since fellow 8-stringers are already used to the beast's weight. Thanks y'all!

Multiscale to put bare knuckle juggernauts in?

I want a multiscale 8 string, but I'm concerned about pickups. I like the bareknuckle juggernaut, but nothing really has those stock. Are there any good multi-8s in the 600-1200 dollar range I can just add bare knuckles to? I like the 27" scale length of my Ibanez RG8, and Idk if the 26.5 on the legator is too short. Also I should probably try a multiscale in person first...

I don't want to have a super pricey guitar simply because: what if it falls off a bridge and I need to buy a new one lol

Should I buy this and put bare knuckle pickups in it?

Also I hate the bats, but I'm sure painting the fretboard is a terrible idea haha

New to 8-string - RG8 EAEADGBE drop chords sound a bit off

Hey all, I recently got an RG8 so I could see if I'd like playing an 8-string (I love djent and my 7-string came pretty natural, so it seemed like the logical next step). Had it professionally set up at Guitar Center with drop E1 (EAEADGBE EBEADGBE) and the tech opted to put an Ernie Ball 74 on the E1 (not sure what the others are; he gave me the sleeve for the 74 with a note on the back about how bad the tuners suck and a recommendation to change them, lol). He also told me when I picked it up that he tried a thicker gauge first for the E1 to try and get a nicer djenty tone, but the pickups reacted extremely "strangely" to it and 74 was the thickest it could handle without the pickups going haywire (he said it was the weirdest thing he'd ever seen but he only sees 8-strings "maybe once every couple years or so").

Anyways, playing a barred chord sounds a lot like if you play one on a 6 or 7 string guitar *without* drop tuning even though this is definitely a drop tuning. It just sounds... off. I've tried with multiple tuners to ensure all the strings are tuned perfectly, but it still sounds off.

Is this common, or is there anything I can do about it? Thanks!

EDIT: I'm sorry, the title is wrong! The tuning is drop E, so the low A is actually tuned to B, not A! Thank you, u/ChildOfGod11213 for questioning that and making me realize, lol.

Songs to learn for getting back into 8-string guitar

After a few years of not playing guitar at all I’ve been trying to get back into it. Today I finally got around to learning Four Lights by Periphery and I caught that guitar itch. I’m terrible at learning songs by ear and am looking for bands that have 8-string tab easily assessable. I am mainly looking for new artists to learn from for my own inspiration.

8-String Lefty Options over 27"

Hi there!

I bought my frist lefty 8-string last summer, a Schecter Omen-8. It's great, but when I bought I never thought about scale length at all. It's short at 26.5 inches, where most, as I understand it, are 27 inches. I feel that the guitar sounds muddy on the bottom strings even when using thinner gauges, so I want something longer.

I've been eyeing the John Browne Tao-8, and recently bought the Tao-6: https://www.schecterguitars.com/John-Browne-Tao-8-LH?quantity=1&custitem_color_master_list=721

It's at 27 inches. I know Schecter have guitars with 28 inches but most of them don’t do it for me in terms of looks.

I usually don't play in crazy tunings, most of the time in F# standard. I play in F standard, Drop E, and sometimes Drop D# when I fancy playing some Sleep Token. Would love to sound as clear as possible.

My question is if any of you know of any lefty 8-string guitars over 27 inches? And if you think 27 inches would fit my needs?

Love the clarity Periphery has, and especially Meshuggah with their 29 something inch scales.

Ibanez RG2228 vs RGDMS8?

Hi all,

Looking at purchasing my first eight string, ideally budget around £1k max inc. upgrades (based in UK) - have the option of picking up a second hand Prestige RG2228 for £700ish, which I could then upgrade the pickups in (Fishmans?), or picking up a new Ibanez RGDMS8.

See a lot of people raving about the RG2228's still, so I was just wondering how they compare to newer 8 strings like the RGDMS8?

I'll be using clean tones/less heavy distortion maybe more than the average 8-string player as I come from a jazz/fusion background, hence wanting to change the 808s out of the RG2228, so any recommendations along this line would be really appreciated (or if there any other models/brands you think are worth considering at this price point let me know!).

Thanks all! ☺️

Loose volume knob

Not sure how, but the volume knob on my Legator Ninja came loose today. It will still turn the volume up and down, but it can now turn further which is obviously not right. There’s a small gap between the body and the knob. Not sure if it just came loose from there, or if the internal pot is loose. Any suggestions on how to fix?
