May 2016 EvoGames Hall of Fame Voting

The EvoGames Hall of Fame is an archive of your favourite organisms from our games. Organisms can be nominated on the monthly nominations thread, and voted upon during the last week of the month. Whichever organism has the most votes will be inducted into the hall of fame, and added as a flair.

This month, May 2016 is our first induction. Four nominees are listed below. The link to the voting is at the bottom of the thread. Now, choose your favourite, and vote!

May Nominees:

Jitensule is the winner! It will be inducted into the hall of fame as soon as I have time. I will also open the June nominations as soon as possible.

A way to get this game going.

If this game is going to be based off evolution, there needs to be a good way to organize the the creatures, where they evolved from, who their relatives are, in an easy to follow way. Just more taxonomy is what I'm basically saying here.

There also needs to be more visualization of the environment we're dealing with. Maybe climate shifts over time. Or instead of an ocean changing into a desert, we build a world with multiple biomes.

Feel free to discus with me more ideas. I'm just throwing things out there for right now

Action Plan

I really, really don't want to see this subreddit die again. I love speculating evolution in all its different forms, but something about collaboration just makes it much more interesting and, in my opinion, a lot more fun.

That being said, what are we going to do to get the forum active again? After reading through various posts, it seems like the basic consensus is that we should:

  • Start a weekly game that we send out announcements for. This would be a contest game. I believe the Hydras Realm game was along the lines of what we should do, but a full game should last from Friday to Saturday. This gives players two days to evolve as they please, with Sunday being the time for "judges" to pick the Champion for that specific game.

  • We need different art. I love pixel art, and I am still going to include it in the games that I create, but in a different form. In a game I was working on previously to submit to the subreddit, I had a hand-drawn single-celled organism, but I created a pixel art sprite of the creature for a Clade Diagram. In this sense, we could have a blend of both pixel and more detailed art. However, if a game creator wants pixel art, then that game creator should be the one to make it as to not impose on players. Pixel art seems to be a turnoff to newer players.

  • Game creators need to be more active in moderating their game. What I mean by this is games seem to crash and burn because not a lot is going on. It isn’t interesting. Things like interactive maps that reflect environmental change regularly and adapt with the species inhabiting the world would definitely immerse players a little more. Also, events that alter the course of evolution, God Posts, would spice up a game when it is getting too stale for players. What better way to incite speciation and activity than with global disasters?

  • The last thing I can currently think of is a general ruleset for games and game creation. We have that little thing in the sidebar about PNG images, being nice, a link to the first game, etc, but we don’t have a defined ruleset for people to base their games off of. I mean, yeah, they can go look at previous games such as the first game, but the rules there were also very general and the current games are kinda the same. Accessible, detailed, basic rules for creating a game could be useful in attracting players and game creators to the subreddit.

If I got anything wrong, or if you disagree with anything that I have said, make it known! Or, if you want something done that I haven’t included yet, make that known as well. Based on what is said or unsaid, I will be creating a new game in the following week.

EvoGames Hall of Fame Nominations

So, I've decided to start an "EvoGames" hall of fame. The basic idea is that every month, one creature would be added to the hall, and would become an image flair on both the main sub and the discussion sub.

To nominate a creature, you must simply post a link to the comment containing the creature. This creature has to also be from an r/EvoGames evogame.

I look forwards to the nominees.

Edit: An r/EvoGames evogame includes anything that was linked on the main sub.

Edit: OK, we're starting the May nominations

Edit: M.[number] is the mark number. If there were 3 creatures with the same name before the nominee, then the nominee will be M.4

May nominees:

The voting has started. Nominations are now locked.

lets try this again... beta game preliminaries mark2

so, the last preliminaries somehow died before any of the submissions(most of which were submitted by /u/fishfruit14) could get more than two upvotes. also, in hindsight, I should have put it in competition mode. this time, im gonna make it a little simpler. I just want species submissions and location submissions, and you guys have got to put some upvotes on stuff or ill just have to run the game without your input. the other items will be handled by me.

do you want the game to take place in a cave? a desert? then put a comment below saying so and if you get enough upvotes, thatll be our game. want a poisonous species? an armored or quilled species? perhaps a symbiotic relationship? then put it below and the ones with the highest votes will go in.

EDIT: I guess this game is just gonna wait until you folk get some votes up in here. the only thing that even qualifies at this point is the draining ocean idea by /u/fishfruit14, WHO IS A MODERATOR. we need SPECIES people!

also, this is on the discussions sub, which I suggest you guys subscribe to so you can get any notices about the games or the sub.

New EvoGamemodes?

So, I've decided to compile a list of possible new gamemodes, which I will update whenever a new one crosses my mind. Do what you will with this info.

  • Spore creature creator only

  • Draw the creature, no pixel art

  • Describe the creature. No visuals whatsoever.

  • Teams. Each person signs up for a team, each team with one creature, and the two creatures must battle for dominance, whatever form that takes.

  • Start with complex organisms that already exist (or have existed) on earth, and plop them into a new environment and see how they survive.

  • Broken telephone: (One person describes evolution, next person draws it.)

  • Deevolution: Start with a very complex creature and turn it back into a cell

EvoGames wiki -- Reddit or Wikia based?

Some of the other mods and I from the main sub have decided that we're going to make a wiki for the EvoGames

But our dilemma is wether to host it on Reddit or Wikia.

What are your opinions?

the purpose of this sub

so, yes, this sub was created to relieve the pressure on EvoGames back when people actually checked it out, by moving discussion. but its use goes beyond that, and I want to make sure you all understand its potential for discussing xenobiology for inspiration, educating each other on various topics of biology to ensure accurate evolutions, and brainstorming which games should go next and what can be done to improve the subs.

what do you think I could do better?

please let me know how you feel about the subs and what I could do to improve them. It would seem that I really need someone else's opinion, given the previous death of the games. thanks for any input.
