Those who have used PAWP emergency insurance…need advice

I come to learn that I’ve been paying a potentially shady company for almost 4 years. Today, I had to use it when my dog suddenly declined. I was not able to make the initial video call as it claims ( my husband was home with her at the time and rushed her in).

After my husband let me know what was going on (dog needs emergency surgery)I immediately went to contact them. I looked everywhere for a phone number and come to find out THERE IS NO PHONE NUMBER. Red flags immediately. I grew concerned. Contacted the customer support chat and got very scripted generic responses. Then I contacted a vet which was only a TECH and she claimed it was okay we didn’t do the visit in the first place…. And told me (scripted) responses on how to file a claim.

After the chat, I started to read the recent BAD reviews (when I started it almost 4 years ago there were no bad reviews) .. I became very concerned. I am anxious that they are going to deny my claim and I would have wasted all this money all these years. I know I should have looked into them more.

Does anyone have experience with filing a claim with them?

At my wits end and I feel so guilty

So my husband and I have a 10 year old English mastiff who we adopted about 5 years ago. He still enjoys his 3 km walks a day, has a healthy appetite, is generally in good health. Except that he takes phenobarbital for seizures, which started September last year.

The drugs make him do weird things and my husband and I are losing it slowly. The dog eats his own shit, randomly pees in the house overnight, and wakes us up at all hours in the night. We've been to the vet many, many, many, many times now. Changed his meds, changed the dosage, changed the food, etc. Everything you can think of. The dog now has his own bedroom in the mudroom so that if he pees in the house, at least it's on cheap tile. I'm starting to resent my dog and I feel so fucking guilty. We don't get more then 3 hours of sleep a night usually, cleaning up his pee is like cleaning up a flood, and eating his own shit makes me gag and not want to be near him.

Hoping tonight will be better as the mudroom is in the back of the house, far away from our bedroom and we put up a baby gate. We'd of course never rehome him, but I feel like absolute crap most days. How do you guys deal when your dog is testing every last nerve? Especially when we've tried and continue to try absolutely everything. Sometimes it's just dang hard.

Am I taking my dog outside enough?

We have this 14 month old mini aussie doodle puppy. He got potty training super quickly and only had a handful of accidents in the house (all our fault but once) during the process.

Now he is basically fully grown and is roughly around 30 lbs. He goes to the sitters 3 days a week while we are at work (mainly because I am afraid of regressing all progress with separation anxiety). The remainder of the week, he goes for a long walk when he asks in the afternoon. Other than a training session we will turn of his favourite tv show and he sleeps for the remainder of the day. We live in an apartment so we have to walk to the park if he wants to run around.

The dilemma ma is that he asks to go outside every hour. When we take him out he usually wanders around for 15 minutes. Will lift his leg every once in a while (not actually peeing), try to eat at least one thing off the ground. And never really going to the bathroom.

Taking him out every hour is not really one can keep up if they ever want to be productive. Especially if they have to exit the apartment building and the dog doesn’t actually pee. So I try to make him wait 3 hours but he is persistent and I feel bad. So I take him out earlier.

So my question is, am I neglecting my puppy like he seems to think?

SHould I send my dogs to live with my mom?

Tldr: I got these dogs with my abusive ex and decided it would be in their best interest for me to keep them when we broke up even though I am a busy college student in an apartment. The dogs love me, but I am not fulfilling their energy and play needs daily. They get to go outside for 30 min a day but still have energy. Would they be better off living with my mom, her two dogs, and an acre of land.

I got my dogs (2 yr old lab pit mix, 3-5 yr old terrier mix) with my ex who was abusive to both myself and the dogs so I took them when we broke up. I am out of the house anywhere from 5-10 hours a day due to school and work and I feel awful for leaving them in my small 10 x 10n apartment room. They have infinite toys, bones, water, and soft bedding, but they are still trapped in a small room for most of the day. When I get home I rarely have the energy to take them on a walk (we are still working on leash training as my ex refused to walk them on leash but did not train recall), so i will typically take them out to potty, back inside, then take them up to our small apartment dog park for 30-45 min and throw a tennis ball around. They always have food and water and so much love, but I know they need more exercise than I can give them. I also have severe sleeping issues where I will sleep most of the day away when I don't have responsibilities. They are so sweet and will sleep and cuddle with me all day and won't make it known when they want or need to go outside. My mom has 2 very large dogs and an acre of fenced land for them to run in. Since we have been back to my apartment after winter break, my smaller dog refuses to poop when we go outside and purposefully waits until I leave to poop and pee on the floor (he is potty trained, never had this issue before, is not sick, no diet change, other dog will wait). I have been taking this as a sign he is upset with the amount of activity he gets. This is strange to me as when we leave my mom's house they are more than ready to get back to my apartment and show genuine excitement to be home. They are happy dogs, I just feel bad for the lack of exercise.

Here's my question: please answer with kindness as I love these dogs as my own children and I feel horrible and neglectful for how they live, even though they seem happy. I DID NOT CHOOSE TO BRING THESE DOGS IN MY LIFE, BUT I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEM. That is why I am asking this.

Should I send the dogs to live with my mom?

at what point should i take my dog to the vet?

I swear I’m not asking for medical advice. I’m just trying to gauge how long is normal for a dog to have an upset stomach.

I was dog sitting another dog and my dog ate some of the visiting dog’s food earlier this morning. Now her stomach is making noises and she won’t stop eating grass. Her stomach has made these sounds before when I switched her dog food but I don’t think she was eating this much grass.

I’m trying to decide I should take her to the vet in the morning or if I’m overreacting. Should I wait and see if this passes? (It hasn’t even been a full day yet) How long would y’all wait before seeking vet care?

My dog is recovering from a bite I need some help

About 2 days ago he was bitten by a dog in our neighborhood (we got it figured out) and he’s recovering great I just treat his bite with disinfectant and cause every other day. But he was super energetic and happy all the time before and now he walks around super shaky and slowly, I think it might be a physiological thing. And there were no bite marks on his legs I checked very thoroughly.

Can dogs be bothered by their own musty smell?

We have a Great Pyr mix from the shelter and try to keep him active. We live in a suburban neighborhood with a backyard that they have full access to. Exercise includes daily walks, mental enrichment (scent training, behavioral, etc) and when the weather allows, we all go camping/hiking.

THEY STINK! We used to take them to pet washing stations when it became a bitter, peppery smell. With this weird dog illness in our community, we stopped these public baths. Outdoor baths are impossible, even with two people trying to manage and we don’t have the indoor plumbing to deal with all the fur.

The indoor dog beds are washed regularly but because the main source of stink (doggo) is still musty, the clean doesn’t last more than an hour. This is a lot of time, water and power.

Can dogs smell their own musty scent? Is there a point that it becomes uncomfortable? Does it bother them? Is there such a thing as too much stink? I want to save time and resources until things are safe again but not at the expense of their well-being!

New dog collar purported safe but…

It contains “natural” chrysanthemum which is toxic to dogs when the plant is eaten but not sure how it works on a collar.

I’m worried it gets licked after working it’s way down her coat…

Trust pilot reviews are great and it can’t be worse than Nexguard but still wondering if anyone has tried anything like this

How often do you clean / wash your dog’s feet?

I’m a neat freak / germaphobe. I also have bad allergies. That said, I’m a stickler about keeping my dog clean, particularly her paws and undercarriage area. She sleeps in the bed with me, and sits on the couch etc. We also live in a rural and rainy area, so keeping her clean is a must.

That said, it is VERY time consuming. I spend a LOT of time keeping her feet / undercarriage / private areas clean. Our routine is basically after every potty or walk (usually 5-6 times a day), I will put her in the tub and use a little baby shampoo to wash said areas, rinse, and then use a pet dryer afterward (no heat). This takes me about 30 mins every time. I understand it’s the price I have to pay if I choose to allow her on the bed or couch with me, which is totally fine.

I was just wondering if anyone else does this? How often do you clean / wash your pets’ feet? Would love to hear some ideas or tips / tricks on possibly less time-consuming ways to do this. Thanks!

Spot cleaning pee stains between baths.

My girl gets pee on her tail and back end when she pees, so she smells like pee and her fur is stained yellow. It comes out in the bath but I can’t bathe her everyday. Can anyone suggest a safe and effective way to spot clear her back end in between baths? She is a short haired mix breed, if that makes a difference. She’s also the goodest girl. 😊

My Westie has TCC prostate cancer.. advise please

My boy, Ollie was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 2 months ago. We decided not to give chemo treatments, and he is taking piroxicam and omerpozole. Aside from straining to pee, he has been our same lovable guy. He eats, plays, enjoys snuggles on the couch..Until yesterday.. he seems to be wanting to pee every 1/2 hour and straining for much longer, with very little pee coming out. I took to vet and they gave me prasazoin to relax urethra. It’s only been a day but not much change. We know eventually we will need to euthanize, I just don’t know how I know when it’s that time. He’s still eating, enjoys his spoon of peanut butter for treat, but mobility is less and definitely a lot more straining. I love him so much, I don’t want to euthanize while he still wags his tail at me and begs for treats, but I’m afraid if I wait too long, then he will be in incredible pain. If anyone has any experience with this, please let me know how you handled it. Thank you

Adult dog and puppy food

Ok so I’m curious. At what age did you guys with medium size dogs make the switch over from puppy food to adult food? Did anyone ever wait the full year?

Pet-sitting cost??

Hi, I know this price varies depending on location and what all is included in the price, but I was looking for some sort of a ballpark in regards to how much a pet-sitter usually costs?

I've been asked by somebody to mind their two dogs while they're away for a few nights. I'll have to go to their house (potentially staying over), feed them, water them, take them for walks, and give them company. I have no idea how much money to ask for. I don't want to under-value myself, but I don't want to rip her off either.

Have you ever availed of someone's services like this? How much did you pay? If not, how much would you be willing to pay?

Thank you! :)

Front and rear support harness for walking elderly dog (Canada)

My dog's arthritis is starting to get bad enough that she struggles to squat to pee and walk around, she's also developed a bit of vertigo. I am looking for a good harness that we can use to help her with mostly back end but also front end support for walking, to help her go to the bathroom and to lift her into the car, she's a medium sized shepherd mix, none of the local stores have anything so I am looking at ordering it online (must be able to be shipped to Canada) . everything I've found online has mixed reviews or don't really have much use of the harness for walking, we only go once around the block she can't handle longer walks anymore :(

Picture because she's soooo cute

Creative ways to administer pills other than pill pockets?

Hello!

We have a three-year-old basset with a cancer diagnosis. He’s in the early stages of chemo and recently has become really picky about food and not wanting to take pills in particular. Not sure if it’s because of his prolific sniffer but he seems able to sniff out pills in almost anything we give him. One thing will work for a while, then he’ll turn his nose up at it. Hickory smoke pill pockets worked for a bit, sometimes cheese, sometimes lunch meat rolled up around it, but then usually he will seek out the pill and spit it out.

I considered crushing them up and then adding them to a mushy food, but since he’s become really picky about what food he will eat and I worry that if the flavor didn’t fully mask the flavor of the pill, he would just turn his nose up at it because he knows it’s pill-flavored. He isn’t very big on peanut butter so I haven’t tried much in that direction.

Just wondering if others have any creative solutions. I saw a pill shooter thing at the pet store that is like a way to just shoot them directly into your pet’s throat, and I’d like to avoid that if at all possible. But if people have experience with that, also happy to get your input. Right now we are giving him like 3 pills in the morning, and some of them are 1.5 pill doses so I have to get 5-6 pill portions into him each morning.

What kind of brush should I use for my American Terrier?

She’s short hair and white. I’ve tried so many brushes and they don’t seem to work. What brush and shampoo do you use/recommend. I figured I’d ask here before trying a new brush.
